TCB Debriefing 8/31/23: Brooks Wheelan, Amber Ruffin, Ridiculousness, Rick and Morty S7,

August 31, 2023
News
amber ruffin, brooks wheelan, rick and morty, ridiculousness, wga strike

1. Brooks Wheelan has done some daring things for comedy including, but not limited to running an entire marathon on a whim on next to no training at the beginning of quarantine. For his latest feat, Wheelan will be taping his brand new hour special in the far reaches of Anchorage, Alaska at the appropriately named Bear Tooth Theater. To our knowledge, Brooks will have what will be one of very few hours of comedy recorded and released in Alaska (the only other one that comes to mind is Glenn Wool’s I’ll Ask Her). Go get tickets for Wheelan’s taping, if you’re up there, here.

2. While the future of The Amber Ruffin Show and late night in general is unclear, Amber Ruffin is already working on adapting the book she co-wrote with her sister Lacey Lamar (Deadline). Of course, nothing definite is set as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are still in effect. Also, isn’t it weird that Strike Force Five doesn’t include Ruffin, especially considering she is now the only non-cis-hetero-white-man in late night?

3. The writers of Ridiculousness, many of whom are comedians, are putting up the possibility of unionizing under the banner of the WGA to a vote (Deadline). One can hope that this is yet another small step to comedians having their own union?

4. Yes, Rick and Morty is such an international phenomenon that Adult Swim can make content out of just announcing episode titles, which usually don’t give almost anything away. That’s what they did here, but they better have more Rick and Morty teasers as the premiere is still several weeks away on Oct. 15th on Adult Swim.

5. If you’re legitimately exploring a comedic premise that has to do with your fondness for any time in the past being a “simpler time”, perhaps do some soul searching.

Pick of the Day: Dead Pilots Society Presents: Brooks Wheelan’s Dead Pilots (in LA) 1/12

December 19, 2022
News
brooks wheelan, dead pilots society, elysian, live reading, los angeles comedy

The network TV axe is so very bloody these days. Not only are shows getting cut after a season, but shows that were renewed are having their fate reversed and consequently canceled. So, you’d figure that means more produced pilots are even less likely to make it to series than they were even a year ago.

Thankfully, the podcast Dead Pilots Society has returned for the first live LA show to make sure that some of these things actually see the light of day and are enjoyed by an actual audience. This edition of Dead Pilots Society will live read the first three episodes of a Brooks Wheelan pilot that were commissioned by Fox, but, as you can guess, never went beyond that.

There’s an amazing cast they’ve lined up for this live reading that will include:

  • Brooks Wheelan (SNL)
  • Tim Heidecker (Tim and Eric)
  • Bobby Moynihan (SNL)
  • Alyssa Limperis (Flatbush Misdemeanors)
  • Kerri Kenney Silver (Reno 911)
  • Jermaine Fowler (Tuca and Birdie)
  • Mike O’Brien (AP Bio)
  • Jessica Lowe (Minx), and more.

Go get tickets ($20) to enjoy this live and in person at The Elysian come Thurs. Jan. 12th at 7:30PM. Do so here.

Please Enjoy Brooks Wheelan’s Set from Late Night with Seth Meyers

We’ve recently noticed a trend in late night stand-up sets that we’re really digging. It’s subtle and just beginning, but more and more comics seem to be free to have ad libs/asides, here and there, making their very rehearsed performance seem more alive and closer to the experience you’d get if you were to see them at a live comedy show. It’s part of what makes live comedy magical.

Part of the fun of watching Brooks Wheelan do stand-up is seeing the sheer fun he has telling jokes and stories, a lot of which has to do with the him playing with his set from moment-to-moment. That’s clearly on display in this very delightful set he just did on last night’s Late Night with Seth Meyers.

So, with all of that said, go give Brooks Wheelan’s set on Seth Meyers a watch here.

Roy Wood Jr. has taken over hosting duties from Ari Shaffir for the fourth season of Comedy Central’s storytelling series This Is Not Happening.

Per usual, there are very insane stories, several of which probably benefit from certain statutes of limitations being over, and crazy looking interstitials inspired by the title of the show.

By the way, Roy looks pretty damn slick in his get up, doesn’t he?

Here’s the trailer.

This Is Not Happening season 4 premieres Friday, Feb. 2nd at Midnight on Comedy Central.

Waking up from a coma can be so jarring, especially if you’ve been under for an extended period of time.

Nick Turner takes this idea repeatedly to the nth degree by imagining the worst outcome of waking up from an aforementioned coma in the Comedy Central digital series, Ya Killin’ Me. Thankfully, it’s done a darkly humorous way for all our enjoyment this Halloween season (or anytime really if you happen to love dark comedy like we do).

So, without further adieu, please watch and enjoy Ya Killin’ Me.

Seeso is wasting no time in getting the second season of live comedy showcase series Night Train with Wyatt Cenac going. The renewal announcement was made today along with the line-ups feature much of the best in NYC and around the country. The tapings are all set up all around Valentine’s Day.

What makes us most excited about this new batch of Night Train is plenty more opportunity for Wyatt to spit the fire that he did with his immediate-post-election album, One Angry Night in November (you can still get it for free here).

You can get tickets, from which the proceeds will go to charity, here.

This latest episode of Thomas R. Wood’s great web series Outside Comedy trails Brooks Wheelan as he takes a day to hike along a picturesque piece of California coastline and snap as many photos as possible. Turns out that Wheelan loves photography, but likes to do as more of an outsider rather than getting to the specifics of F-stops, color temperature, etc.

As with every episode in this series, the hobbies and obsessions outside of comedy bring a sort of balance and perspective to each comedian and it’s pretty fascinating.

In addition to the release of C.K.’s latest special, we all get another great stand-up release today with Brooks Wheelan’s debut stand-up comedy album This Is Cool, Right?

Brooks has a spirited debut on this hour, taking us through some of his darker misadventures throughout his life, but alo bringing such levity to it all at the same time. The juxtaposition of rejected SNL sketches and how excited he is still about them, for example, makes this all the more of a delight to listen to.

So, go and pick up a copy of This Is Cool, Right?
