Netflix Is A Joke Fest Is Back (and Even Bigger?) for 2022

December 6, 2021
News

One of the first major comedy festivals to get postponed indefinitely because of COVID-19 was Netflix’s gigantic celebration of comedy that brought out all their biggest stars and their accompanying constellations, Netflix Is a Joke Fest. It was also going to be the first big comedy festival in LA in years (since Riot LA in DTLA ended its run).

For 2020, Netflix seemingly spared no expense to make the biggest comedy festival they could in Los Angeles and it was heartbreaking to see none of that happen in 2020 and have no idea if and when it would happen again.

Well, on this side of the pandemic, Netflix Is a Joke Fest was just announced to be back on, running from Thurs. Apr. 28th-Sun. May 8th, and Netflix is making sure to make it even bigger it would appear. Their stable of venues includes LA’s biggest (which wasn’t planned for 2020) including Dodger Stadium, Staples Center (now known as Crypto.com Arena), The Forum, and The Hollywood Bowl on top of beloved LA comedy haunts, old and new, The Comedy Store, The Hollywood Improv, Dynasty Typewriter, and The Elysian.

The top billing for the line-up is also more robust than we remember. On the schedule, the streamer has David Letterman, Tina Fey/Amy Poehler, Ali Wong, Eddie Izzard, Larry David, Wanda Sykes, Nick Kroll, Seth Rogen’s Table Reads, Marc Maron, Jane Fonda/Lily Tomlin, John Mulaney, Mike Birbiglia, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, Colin Quinn, Mike Myers, Chris Rock, Ilana Glazer, Jimmy Carr, Taylor Tomlinson, Margaret Cho, Ben Schwartz, and Kevin Smith.

Oh yeah, there’s Dave Chappelle too as well as Aziz Ansari who are two of Netflix’s biggest gets within their talent pool, but have had the “cancellation” treatment. We have no doubt that their shows will sell out.

As they are billing it as the “biggest comedy event in history*, *probably” (SF Sketchfest does have way more programming and the Edinburgh Fringe is bigger than most festivals, period.), they’ve also filled out their line-up with plenty of folks (including many of our absolute favorites) that you shouldn’t miss if you’re putting the money down for Netflix Is a Joke Fest. That includes Todd Glass, Melissa Villaseñor, Guy Branum, Natalie Palamides doing Laid, Beth Stelling, James Adomian, Robin Tran, Mae Martin, and Sam Jay.

You can take a gander at the schedule here, then go get tickets starting this Fri. Dec. 10th at NetflixIsAJokeFest.com.

Carol Burnett, Norman Lear, Bob Newhart, Carl Reiner, Lily Tomlin To Receive The Paley Honors: A Special Tribute to Television’s Comedy Legends

Here’s a trivia fact for you: of this group, Burnett, Newhart, Reiner, and Tomlin all have Mark Twain Prizes for Humor from the Kennedy Center (Norman Lear really ought to have one given the Mark Twain Prize’s mission statement of having an impact on American society via their comedic work).

Come Nov. 21st (that’s when the ceremony will happen at Beverly Wilshire Hotel), they all, in one fell swoop, get a lifetime achievement award from The Paley Center for Media for their renowned comedy series and specials.

One hopes that they all show up and they all try to top each other with their acceptance speeches.

If any of that’s up your alley, you might want to catch this event this Saturday night at UCLA’s Royce Hall at 8PM. Tickets range from $25-$100 and you can (and should) get them here.

-Individual Achievement in Comedy: Rachel Bloom (CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, The CW)
-Outstanding Achievement in News and Information: FULL FRONTAL WITH SAMANTHA BEE (TBS)

As the recent announcement of awards nominations show, streaming services like Netflix are faring quite well amongst traditional broadcast, cable, and even premium cable networks. Their formula for programming is working and thus Netflix and the like are going to stay the course (that includes expanding their programming) and a renewal for a third season of Grace and Frankie is a part of that plan.

Along with the accolades for her turn in Grandma, Lily Tomlin is having a really good year.

While you’re probably still suspicious of Netflix’s reviving Full House, they are doing well to also focus on their own homegrown original comedy series.

BoJack Horseman is about to premiere in July and now, another season of Grace and Frankie is set for 2016. Jane Fonda tweeted out the news last night.

If they continue the path they’re on now, Netflix will probably have a much bigger original comedy slate by the time this next season of Grace and Frankie comes out.

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin play “frenemies” that come together over their husbands, played by Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen, revealing that they are gay and in love with each other. You in?

Here’s the first trailer to give you a promising taste of what’s to come for Grace & Frankie. You can see that June Diane Raphael, Baron Vaughn, and more will also be in the mix

Given the premise, Grace & Frankie very easily could have been a multi cam sitcom, but it’s not and we think it will be all the better for it.

All the episodes will be released on Netflix on May 8th.

(via Variety)

With 2015 just under way, Netflix already has their line-up for their latest series releases featuring two high profile comedies, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which they bought from NBC and ordered a second season on top of that, and Grace and Frankie with Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda as former rivals that bond over each of their husbands leaving them so they can marry each other.

The 13 episodes of the first season of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is set to release Mar. 6th and Grace and Frankie is set for release on May 8th.

So, that gives you some time to watch binge watch whatever other series you were watching before you get into these.

(via Deadline)

Netflix’s latest comedy series slated for production is Grace & Frankie starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin featuring the two as arch rivals that become friends over the fact that their husbands want to marry each other. If that wasn’t intriguing enough, Sam Waterston is playing one of the husbands.

If that somehow not enough to draw your interest, perhaps the you’ll pay attention to June Diane Raphael and Baron Vaughn being cast as respective daughter and son on either side of this new family dynamic.

It’s announcements like these that make us glad Netflix releases all the episodes at once, so we can indeed binge watch.
