Please Watch the Docu Series on the Influential Comedy Night “Phat Tuesdays”

Phat Tuesdays was a historic weekly comedy show that should be mentioned in the same breaths, when talking comedy history, as Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen or The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail. It’s unfortunately not as the racial divisions in comedy, as elsewhere in the world, still hold.

Sadly, stand-up comedy has been very segregated and remains so in several regards. From the get go scores of years ago, the division between white comedians (mostly men at that too) and everyone else has been an ever evolving barrier. As such, many black comedians created their own scene/circuit where they could not only make space for themselves as artists in comedy, but entertain their own. The for-us-by-us mentality has been woven through so much of black art and performance for so long. It’s that spirit that carried Guy Torry’s Phat Tuesdays to The Comedy Store and had it thrive for a decade.

The eponymous doc Phat Tuesdays: The Era of Hip Hop Comedy from Reginald Hudlin tells that story in how influential and prolific that night was for black comedians of all backgrounds, for The Comedy Store (it kept the club alive during one of its darkest decades), comedy in general, and for the culture. Interviews featuring Phat Tuesdays architect Guy Torry, his brother Joe Torry, Tommy Davidson, Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, Dave Chappelle, Luenell, Kym Whitley, and so many more paint a wondrous picture of a Comedy Store milestone that was a spark for so many of the most beloved black comedians and similar nights and shows across the entire country.

In fact, it’s such a milestone that it’s egregious that Mike Binder’s Showtime docu-series about The Comedy Store glosses over Phat Tuesdays as almost if it was a small footnote. You might watch this and wonder why this story exists separately from the narrative of comedy history/The Comedy Store that praises the days of Pryor and Carlin. We sincerely hope that you watching can make that division fade, even if just a little.

All three episodes of Phat Tuesdays: the Hip Hop Era of Comedy are now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Showtime’s Latest In-Depth Comedy Doc Will Be W. Kamau Bell’s We Need to Talk About Cosby

December 20, 2021
News
bill cosby, docu series, showtime, w kamau bell

Perhaps, as a titular nod to 2011’s We Need To Talk About Kevin, W. Kamau Bell has put together an entire docu-series exploring the mythos of Bill Cosby and the tragic reveal of the monster that he really is. Bell looks to explore how we’re supposed to even move forward with the knowledge that he perpetrated his sex crimes for decades and we wouldn’t believe it because he was proverbially “America’s Dad”, especially if you’re a middle aged black comedian right now.

This will be the latest in the line of documentary deep dives into the history of comedy, no matter how dark or real the territory is, by Showtime. Impressively, they’ve recently had docs on Dick Gregory and Charlie Chaplin and The Comedy Store and, from the looks of it, they’re going to keep pushing in that direction, which we’re, of course, on board for.

Get a look at We Need to Talk About Cosby and why the title is still so relevant with the series teaser here. Look for the premiere on Showtime on Jan. 30th.

Kevin Hart Don’t F**k This Up Docu-Series Truly Does Give an Insider’s Look Into the Life of a Superstar Comedian

Kevin Hart’s Netflix docu series intends to show Kevin confronting his past and present and future via tons of footage from all years of his life (and plenty of the present day non-stop, go-go-go, lifestyle he keeps up now).

Seeing Kevin get vulnerable and diving into his past is pretty intriguing, especially in how his mother and father have informed his life these days. Also,  the sheer scale at which Kevin Hart runs his entertainment empire is pretty damn captivating. Balancing, stand-up, running his own comedy brand Laugh Out Loud, starring in movies, hardcore workouts, his family, recording podcasts/doing radio, and so much more, we’ve perhaps never got inside look of the life of one of the biggest draws around that happens to be a comedian.

Kevin Hart: Don’t F**k This Up is now streaming on Netflix.

Klepper Trailer Has Jordan Klepper Drop His Daily Show/Opposition Character

Perhaps, in the interests of skirting around Malcolm Gladwell’s “Satire Paradox”, Jordan Klepper is leaving little room for interpretation in his latest comedy docu-series coming soon to Comedy Central, the eponymous Klepper.

Within it, Jordan will interview, explore, and in some cases, embed himself in marginalized communities that he wants to, according to this trailer, highlight positively (such as veterans, environmentalists, undocumented immigrants) as opposed to satirizing certain radical groups on The Daily Show or The Opposition by playing an overly pompous, bizarro version of himself.

Just see it for yourself here. If you’re into it, catch the premiere of Klepper’s second series on May 9th at Comedy Central.

Larry Charles’ Dangerous World of Comedy To Explore Truly Risky Comedy Beyond Sacha Baron Cohen Hoodwinking Everyone

Larry Charles, the frequent collaborator of Sacha Baron Cohen on such works as Borat and Bruno, is taking a break from pulling a fast one on everyone and taking a more exploratory, literal documentarian view with his latest project, Larry Charles’ Dangerous World of Comedy.

Charles has gone to places like Iraq, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Palestine where free speech isn’t quite what it is in America to see how comedy folks pull off, well, doing comedy over there. Also, from the looks of it, Larry will also explore “dangerous comedy” here in the States, which is it’s own breed of crazy.

It looks pretty fascinating and probably answers some questions that you might have been passively wondering (like “Can you and how do you do comedy in a repressive regime?”). Get a taste of it with this trailer, then look for the episodes to drop on Fri., Feb. 15th.

For several years, a much sought after milestone for comedians was getting the title of being a Just For Laughs Montreal New Face. Though it’s a list intended largely for industry types, it has been established as a marker for who to watch out for, especially with stand-up.

Thus, comics compete intensely for the limited number of slots they hand out every year up in Montreal for the hope that they can call themselves a New Face whether they ends up being an actual big break or not (even if they’ve had a good amount of exposure and success already).

Inside Jokes follows a handful comics (including folks we really dig such as Simon Gibson, MK Paulsen, Rosebud Baker, and Robert Dean) on this journey and you can get a taste of it right here. It premieres on Amazon Prime starting on Fri., Nov. 30th.

Oh, if you want a spoiler to how ends up getting to be a New Face, here’s the list for your convenience.

Amazon to Do a 6 Part Documentary Series on Getting JFL Montreal’s New Faces

For decades, one of the most sought out milestones in comedy when coming up has been and still is getting selected to be part of Just For Laughs Montreal’s New Faces of Comedy.

So, Amazon has decided to do a docu-series on the process and following comedians in trying to secure a slot on the renowned festival’s New Faces line-up, which will show how much stress and work goes in to essentially doing what’s supposed to be a life-changing set in front of members of the industry.

As there are cameras rolling, maybe all those picked as New Faces will actually get something out of the whole thing besides just doing a few shows in Montreal and taking a few general meetings.

We’re guessing this will drop on Amazon a bit after JFL Montreal happens this Summer.

It’s an ever evolving mystery on exactly how comedy works and how comedians are able to synthesize their reality into something that will make a group of strangers laugh.

Many series, documentaries, podcasts, movies, books, etc. have explored this topic and will continue to do so as comedy keeps changing.

The latest series to dissect the inner workings of comedy will be coming from Viceland and led by esteemed comedy/entertainment historian Kliph Nestoroff.

Called Funny How?, Kliph will watch comedians try working out their material and then talk shop with them about their process.

Here’s a trailer for the docu-series, which you can catch the premiere of on July 10th.

Unlike many comedy retrospectives these days, they’re going to go all the way back to the Ancient Greeks.

CNN is adding to their comedy offerings from United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell by making a brand new historical comedy series, The History of Comedy, that will trace the evolution of comedy as an art form over time and in branching out of genres within it.

Look for the series to debut sometime next year.

No word on who will host it or some of the guests that will be interviewed, but we’d be really surprised if Kliph Nesteroff didn’t fit somewhere int his.
