Go Watch Alice Wetterlund’s First Hour Special “My Mama Is a Human and So Am I”

Today marks Amazon taking a big step into the world of stand-up comedy specials highlighted specifically by Alice Wetterlund’s first hour special My Mama Is a Human And So Am I.

Amazon Studios released four very different comedy specials (and Jim Gaffigan’s latest hour earlier this week), but Alice’s special stood out for us as she really got to let loose with her cool, sharp, and deftly wry sense of humor for a whole hour. Undeniably, Wetterlund has a command of the room in such an effortless way. She satirically points out how deep the threads of the patriarchy run through every fiber of society and examines her own long journey of self-acceptance and healing all while maintaining a relaxed vibe, sneaking in punchlines throughout.

So, please enjoy My Mama Is A Human And So Am I as it just started streaming on Amazon Prime today.

From the get go, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has been a comedy jewel in this new Peak TV/Golden Era of Television that we’re currently in.

Mrs. Maisel is on to its third season now and seems to be cruising along as an award-winning, critical darling like it has been doing it for quite some time now (having the mind of Amy Sherman-Palladino at the helm certainly helps).

Take a look for yourself with this season 3 trailer, then look for the season premiere on Amazon Prime on Fri. Dec. 6th.

Watch Trailer for “Inside Jokes”, Amazon’s Docu Series on Trying to Get JFL New Faces

For several years, a much sought after milestone for comedians was getting the title of being a Just For Laughs Montreal New Face. Though it’s a list intended largely for industry types, it has been established as a marker for who to watch out for, especially with stand-up.

Thus, comics compete intensely for the limited number of slots they hand out every year up in Montreal for the hope that they can call themselves a New Face whether they ends up being an actual big break or not (even if they’ve had a good amount of exposure and success already).

Inside Jokes follows a handful comics (including folks we really dig such as Simon Gibson, MK Paulsen, Rosebud Baker, and Robert Dean) on this journey and you can get a taste of it right here. It premieres on Amazon Prime starting on Fri., Nov. 30th.

Oh, if you want a spoiler to how ends up getting to be a New Face, here’s the list for your convenience.

Amazon Orders Its First Animated Dramedy Series ‘Undone’ from Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy of BoJack Horseman

Amazon Orders Its First Animated Dramedy Series ‘Undone’ from Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy of BoJack Horseman

Surprising at it may sound, Amazon apparently hasn’t entered the animation space quite like their main competitor Netflix has.

They’re looking to fix that with an animated dramedy from Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy, two of the mind’s behind the successful Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman. Called Undone, it has a bit of a sci-fi edge to it as the lead Alma has some sort of special power involving time after surviving a car crash.

Alma will be voiced by Rosa Salazar who, coincidentally, also plays an android heroine in the upcoming sci-fi action adventure movie, Alita: Battle Angel.

One can only imagine if this and Tuca and Bertie (the upcoming animated series at Netflix from BoJack Horseman’s producer and production designer Lisa Hanawalt) take off and BoJack will have sprouted an animated series dynasty.

Look for Undone to start streaming on Amazon Prime in 2019.

Amazon Studios Signs Sharon Horgan to Overall Deal

As Sharon Horgan is now, more than ever before, a true power player in comedy as a writer, actress, and director, maybe they’ll get to doing a new version of Pulling as was planned a few years ago?

In any case, Amazon is smart to make sure that Horgan doesn’t get too comfy with Divorce over at competitor HBO by allowing her to develop whatever she wants at Amazon.

Paul Scheer Brought on as New Writer for the ‘Galaxy Quest’ TV Reboot at Amazon

Taking the reins of the script from Robert Gordon, the host of How Did This Get Made? (also, The League, Human Giant, Crash Test, and a million other things you love in comedy) Paul Scheer will now be writing the script for the new Galaxy Quest reboot as a TV series at Amazon.

Whether the original cast from the movie will join in has yet to be seen given the untimely passing of Alan Rickman.

Still, there seems to be endless, great possibilities with Paul Scheer now attached this project and we can’t wait to see what he might do.

Slowly but surely, The Big Sick has been rolling out in theaters across America over the last few weeks.

It indeed is one of the best movies of the years, certainly one of the best romantic comedies this side of the 21st century. Also, if you’ve been following the film’s star and co-writer Kumail Nanjiani on Twitter, you’ve seen that the film has been touching to so many different kinds of people in so many wondrous ways.

So, go see it/go see it again in a theater that’s now probably very close to you.

If you are in NYC or LA, please go see The Big Sick, the movie based on the true love story of Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon.

It rolls out into a wider release next month, but you should go see it the movie if you can before then. Not only did Kumail and Emily write it and Michael Showalter direct it and it has this great trailer and this great clip, but it also isn’t the latest installment of an overblown franchise with robots.

The creative heads behind black-ish as well as Transparent and I Love Dick re-upped the lease on the big sandbox that they get play with.

Announced today, Kenya Barris and Jill Soloway just renewed their overall deals. Barris has another 4 years locked in with ABC Studios and Soloway has three more with Amazon.

So, you can imagine that the development slates for both the broadcast network and streaming service will be bending genres, doing well to take care of Hollywood’s representation issues, and being more in the zeigest even more than they currently are doing now.

Sometime in the last millennia, most movies not only had a big soundtrack full of licensed songs (some of which weren’t even in the movie), but they also had an original song that had an accompanying music video, specifically tied into the movie.

Well, leave it to Reggie Watts to make that something worth watching again as he has just made such a music video for the virtual reality dramedy from Amazon Studios, Creative Control.

It should also be noted that Watts is probably the best person to make up a song about VR.

Watch it here.

Amazon’s Next Movie Will Be a Jim Jarmusch Comedy Starring Adam Driver

Amazon knows how to hit those indie buzz names.

Though typically it’s a few years before we get the next Jim Jarmusch movie, it’s kind of worth it.

2013 had the fantastic dark vampire wry romantic comedy Only Lovers Left Alive and 2016 promises his next film Paterson with Adam Driver starring.

It’s coming out through Amazon Studios and it’s going to be a wry comedy (that’s kind of Jarmusch’s thing in case you weren’t familiar) and that’s about all we know right now.

Still, you can let your imagination conjure up what a Jarmusch movie with Driver in it might be and still be wildly and delightfully surprised and what we’ll end up getting.

Jesse Eisenberg Adapting His McSweeney’s Short Stories “Bream Gives Me The Hiccups” Into Series For Amazon

Between nailing roles as different neurotic or anxious people a few years ago, Jesse Eisenberg has been writing a short stories focused for McSweeney’s called Bream Gives Me The Hiccups: Restaurant Reviews From A Privileged Nine-Year-Old.

Eisenberg is now adapting these into a series for Amazon Studios. This adds to the big names that Amazon has been lining up on their development slate like Woody Allen.

It would seem that this is probably going to be live action, but it could work just as well animated. Either way, Amazon needs to get to its next cycle already.

Woody Allen Set to Make a Series at Amazon For 2016

Transparent has broken a lot of ground for Amazon Studios, especially with their recent Golden Globes win. Now, Amazon, as you might expect, is opting for more critical acclaim by chasing down more high profile creators.

They caught a pretty big fish by getting Woody Allen to make The Untitled Woody Allen Project, a half-hour series, for a 2016 release.

There are no details about the show beyond that, but we wouldn’t be surprised at all if it featured a beautiful locale and dysfunctional people being stuck together.

With the success of series exclusively released through online streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon is upping their bet on producing original content.

This next quarter, they’re setting to spend over $100 million on producing their original series, though we’re not sure how that’s divvied up between their new pilots and returning series. Hopefully, such a bank roll for Amazon Studios will bring more enticing original comedy series like the enticing Stephen Soderbergh and David Gordon Green pilot Red Oaks.

That comedy pilot is a coming of age comedy from producer Steven Soderbergh and director David Gordon Green entitled Red Oaks set in 1985. Soderbergh and Green collaborating on a comedy series at Amazon has us thoroughly intrigued.

When Amazon Studios first sought to make a round of comedy series, they were open to submissions and now they’re in another development cycle, they’re looking for more genre comedies, dramadies, dark comedy, and other such projects along those lines.

At the very least, if you make it to being a pilot, people will get a chance to see it.

We wonder if this will work versus Netflix’s release of all episodes to subscribers only.

Amazon Studios is still adding more comedy programming to their line-up, though in a more traditional manner. Jill Soloway, whose first foray into features with Afternoon Delight looks promising, is developing a half-hour project that just got optioned at Amazon Studios.

It’s an intriguing move by Amazon after having all of those original pilots, developed, picked up, and green lit via open submissions and customer reviews.
