Reboot, the Comedy About Reboots, Is Now Dead the Same Week Fawlty Towers Is Rebooted

February 9, 2023
News
canceled, hulu, reboot

The type of irony that comes with life imitating art (that is, as fate would have it, imitating life) is one of the cruelest kinds. It comes at a level that very likely won’t be fully grasped until years from now when media historians or cultural critics take a look back at the early decades of the 21st century and how TV and movies found itself to be a box office/ratings obsessed Ouroboros.

Reboot, the satirical sitcom that aimed to skewer Hollywood’s obsession with old IP and any and every generation’s nostalgia, got the axe at Hulu last week and was subsequently being shopped around, with the hope being that it’s über clever writing would find its audience on another platform that wanted to give it more time. Creator Steve Levitan announced this week that the quest to keep Reboot alive had unfortunately ended, spelling out a one season one or Reboot being a “limited series” in the annals of TV history.

At the same time, the news that a reboot of Fawlty Towers, a sitcom from the 70s that highlighted John Cleese as a star separate from Monty Python, arrived. That’s just the latest reboot in a plenty of reboots/revivals/sequels that have happened in 2023 alone (you’ve peeked at That ’90s Show haven’t you?), which we can only surmise that the media conglomerate powers that be (the ones that Succession shines a very bright light on) have no interest in having their core strategy being sent up in an entire TV series… yet.

Will there ever be a time where that changes or will we be stuck in a perpetual cycle of cash grabs from things we kind of loved from our childhoods, so long as we’re at the age range with the most disposable income? Well, let’s see if Reboot ever gets its own reboot.

Well, that seems to be a wrap on Reboot. Very proud of our amazing cast and crew and what we did together. Thanks to all who watched and said such nice things. Haven’t seen it? Check us out on Hulu if you can find it. #UnintentionalLimitedSerieshttps://t.co/9Y2xPDxDNL

Hulu Revives “King of the Hill” After Cancelling “Reboot”, a Show Making Fun of Hulu Rebooting a Classic Comedy

January 31, 2023
News
hulu, king of the hill, reboot

The homespun satire of King of the Hill endures in the hearts and minds of its audiences that it captured well over a decade ago. That’s part of why Hulu is tapping co-creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels and the original cast to revive the series after it went off the air in 2010 (Deadline). Another reason why is, as the coffers of networks and streaming services get shallower and shallower, the dependence on content based off of popular IP (i.e. adaptations, reboots, revivals) is only growing stronger, seemingly every week.

It’s kind of a stark irony and/or a shot across the bow towards completely original ideas for TV and movies that only yesterday, Hulu original series, Reboot, a show sending up the corporate obsession with capitalizing on nostalgia on any given programming slate, was cancelled after only one season (Variety). Sharp writing that recalled the sort of pacing of Arrested Development could have blossomed into a go-to binge series, but Reboot‘s creators and cast are now relegated to shopping the show’s second season to other networks and streaming services (because it wasn’t an instant, chart-topping breakout hit?).

While impressions of Hank Hill still resonate with Gen X-ers and Millennials alike and the two will justifiably be delighted at the return of Hill and his family, such a move by Hulu is just one flag of many that are signaling that original programming is going to be even rarer than it already is on major platforms. Again, this is a notion that Reboot skewers quite well between a power struggle between a father who created a hit multi-cam sitcom in the 90s, his daughter who is seeking to do a “very special episode” reboot of the show, and an in-over-her-head TV executive that is getting a crash course in comedy while in charge.

Life imitating art can be kind of cruel, no?

We have no doubt in our minds that the next Atlanta, an all-out label defying original series is out there, but we can only hope that some major network or streamer will take a chance on it. Don’t be surprised if we get to a point where some phrase like “Completely Original” becomes a selling point for a show or movie in the very near future.

Amazon Taps Phoebe Waller-Bridge & Donald Glover to Reboot Mr. & Mrs. Smith as Series

(via Deadline)

So, Amazon is taking a proven IP and gathering two of the most sought after voices in comedy right now and stirring it all on a pot together. Let’s hope that works.

Both Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover created two of the most acclaimed comedies of the last few years in Fleabag and Atlanta, respectively. Both shows had them starring and leading the charge creatively resulting in a plethora of glowing reviews, award nominations, and even a good chunk of award wins.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith was a blockbuster spy/action adventure rom com that most folks know from 2005 starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt with Doug Liman, one of the best action directors around, at the helm. As you may well know, it was a commercial success.

We’re curious to see how two of comedy’s current geniuses along with Atlanta writer/producer Francesca Sloane will reboot the series (we’d guess that it’s going to be quite different from the movie) at Amazon and make it more than just relying on something that has worked before a few times with beloved names attached.

As the wheels turn in our head, we’re imagining something between Run, Killing Eve, and the music video for This Is America. That works for us, but we’ll just have to wait, probably awhile because of COVID-19, and see what Waller-Bridge, Glover, and Sloane actually have their up sleeve.

Aristotle Athiras is the rare sort of comedian that has actually flourished in improv, sketch, and stand-up and also worked in front of and behind the camera as performer and director. With such a diverse quiver of skills, Aristotle has found opportunities and managed to stay working, as a director for Will Smith’s home show, and very much look forward to be prepared for where the next thing in comedy might be (i.e. Clubhouse). Athiras zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger about his time in lockdown and the future of comedy as well as “hot” takes on Munawar Faruqui getting arrested on suspicion of jokes, Melissa Villasenor hosting The Spirit Awards, Search Party getting renewed, and the pilot for a live action reboot of Powerpuff Girls at CW.

Check out Aristotle’s work as part of Goatface Comedy here (this is the specific sketch we kept talking about during the episode)

Celebrity Deathmatch Reboot Being Developed at MTV Studios with Ice Cube Set To Star

Celebrity Deathmatch Reboot Being Developed at MTV Studios with Ice Cube Set To Star

The over-the-top claymation battles between pop culture figures from every arena (entertainment, sports, politics, etc.), for us, was one of MTV’s best forays into comedy ever. It was sad to see it go after its run in the early 2000s.

That being said, it’ll be interesting to see how this series premised on fights-to-the-death-by-celebrities will figure into the TV landscape of 2019 (or whenever this might be picked up to series). MTV Studios is aiming for streaming services and premium networks as a move, we’d suppose, to not have to necessarily cater to censors.

As reboots and revivals are still the order of the day at studios and networks, we guess we can do a whole lot worst than a revival of Celebrity Deathmatch (though it has yet to be officially picked up anywhere). MTV Studios attaching Ice Cube is an interesting choice as well since this might be the first non-family-friendly thing he’s done in a very long time.

‘A League Of Their Own’ Reboot Being Developed by Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham at Amazon

As reboots and adaptations are still the orders of the days at studios and networks, a new version of the 90s sports comedy period piece classic A League of Their Own developed by half of Broad City and Mozart in the Jungle’s Will Graham sounds kind of exciting to us.

There’s no word on what the “modern take” exactly will be yet, but we are intensely curious how Abbi and Graham will make A League of Their Own that connects for 2018 beyond just tapping feminism’s current hot streak.

Paul Scheer Brought on as New Writer for the ‘Galaxy Quest’ TV Reboot at Amazon

Taking the reins of the script from Robert Gordon, the host of How Did This Get Made? (also, The League, Human Giant, Crash Test, and a million other things you love in comedy) Paul Scheer will now be writing the script for the new Galaxy Quest reboot as a TV series at Amazon.

Whether the original cast from the movie will join in has yet to be seen given the untimely passing of Alan Rickman.

Still, there seems to be endless, great possibilities with Paul Scheer now attached this project and we can’t wait to see what he might do.

Jetsons Live Action Reboot Gets a Put Pilot Order from ABC

Kind of funny how one major TV network announces the order of a pilot that makes run of the preponderance revivals and reboots these days and another major TV network announces the order of a pilot of such a reboot all on the same day.

We will say that if this does end up going to series, it’d be nice if one, just one, futuristic series on television was a bit hopeful and imagines an actually better world, you know, kind of like the original Jetsons.

Also, perhaps this version of The Jetsons could address or correct an oft overlooked dark detail from the original show that one Adam Newman happen to notice and write a great joke about.

A “Roseanne” Revival Is Being Shopped Around Right Now

A “Roseanne” Revival Is Being Shopped Around Right Now

The original cast of Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, and Sara Gilbert are on board for bringing back Roseanne. This revival is indeed being shopped around various networks and it wouldn’t be at all surprising if it found a home pretty fast.

While we can really feel this reboot/revival fatigue setting in, especially with TV these days, a sitcom of the 21st century Roseanne (you know, the one that keeps running for President) and an even more hardboiled, Coen Brothers-esque John Goodman is something we’d be up for.

Such a thing might be unlikely, but you can’t really tell what reboots/revivals will bring these days (i.e. the Archie-based TV series Riverdale hardly resembles your dad’s Archie comics).

If they can make a gritty Snow White remake, why not a gritty update for Bambi?

That’s what SNL was thinking lat night when they made a trailer for something that’s a Fast and Furious 7 meets a live action Bambi with The Rock wearing deer ears and a fur vest and Taran Killam in a muscle suit and bunny ears.

Yes, they have plenty of pun “kill lines” too.

Watch it here.

Norman Lear Has Contemplated a Reboot of “All in the Family”

(via Deadline)

At 92 years old, the legendary Norman Lear may be bringing his transformative sitcom “All in the Family” back to television.

While being interviewed by Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, he revealed that he has toyed with the idea that a reboot of the show might center on a Latino family this time around. In fact, it was Sony Pictures TV  that was asking about possibility of this All in the Family reboot happening with Lear.

While there are no more details as to how and when this would all happen if it were to even happen (Lear seemed to be leaning towards not making much more than conjecture), the thought of All in the Family and Norman Lear mixing in with the current crop of family sitcoms is an enticing one. Maybe he’ll talk about this a little more when he’s on Letterman tonight.

Paul Feig Officially Making Female ‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot with Katie Dippold Co-writing

While the fate of a Ghostbusters sequel still hangs in the balance, a new reboot is definitely moving forward with Paul Feig.

Announced today by Feig himself on Twitter, he will be making a reboot of the franchise with an all female Ghostbusters squad. Katie Dippold, writer of The Heat and Parks and Recreation, is set to co-write the script with him, which means there is more traction in The Ghostbusters franchise towards seeing something on screen in the not so distant future.

Hopefully, that’s some time in late 2015/early 2016/soon so the drought of Ghostbusters in our lives can be over.

The reboot of the Vacation franchise by New Line was already pretty enticing with Ed Helms as a grown up Rusty Griswold.

Now, Keegan Michael-Key and Regina Hall have gotten added to the cast as the heads of a perfect family in contrast to the oft-dysfunctional Griswolds.

So, this reboot just keeps getting better and better.

The Griswolds and their vacation ordeals are getting the reboot treatment as New Line is reviving the Vacation film franchise made famous by Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo.

As of now, Ed Helms is set to play a grown-up Rusty Griswold taking the helm in having a family trip go off the rails. The addition of Christina Applegate as well as Charlie Day and Chris Hemsworth, who are in negotiations to join the cast, round out what could be a nice continuation of the Griswold saga.

Key & Peele to Produce ‘Police Academy’ Reboot for New Line

If there is an answer to the question, “Who could possibly make a reboot of Police Academy that might not make me shrug at Hollywood for trying to reuse every possible movie franchise in cinema history?” Key & Peele’s Keegan-Michael Key & Jordan Peele is a pretty good one.

Ivan Reitman Passing Ghostbusters Director Torch To Someone Else

With the passing of Harold Ramis, director Ivan Reitman felt it appropriate to step down in directing the reboot of the beloved franchise. This means that the reboot of Ghostbusters set to start shooting next year will not have Ivan Reitman, Harold Ramis, or Bill Murray.

Before you get skeptical, let the casting decisions and director attachments be made as they may be good ones.

NBC Reviving ‘Last Comic Standing’ Again

NBC just doesn’t quite want to let go of the stand up comedy competition Last Comic Standing. The reason as to why, we’re not sure. Perhaps, they have some sort of graph that says that stand up has gotten significantly more popular in a target demographic over the last couple of years that Last Comic Standing went off the air or something.

Either way, we are excited to see it come back as the last season put James Adomian, Kurt Metzger, Myq Kaplan, Laurie Kilmartin, Tommy Johnagin, and more on national television.

Bill Cosby Looking To Do Family Sitcom/Reboot ‘Fat Albert’

For as tired as we are with multi-camera sitcoms based around family dynamics these days, we’d still watch one from the legendary Bill Cosby. He’s working on developing something for networks to hopefully put on their slate.

With this and his special coming out later this month, looks like the next year is going to a thankfully (even more) busy (as he tours much of the year) one for Cosby.
