TCB Debriefing 9/8/23: Typist Artist Pirate King, Tiffany Haddish’s Pay for Movie Debut, Hasan Minhaj Tour, Julie Seabaugh

September 8, 2023
News

1. While the Brits were the originators of “kitchen sink realism”, perhaps their M.O. now is more accurately described as “bathroom sink irony”, a more deeply personal, yet acutely satirical view on British life that’s either wryly bittersweet or woebegone hilarious. The latest entry to join this wave might be Carol Morley’s Typist Artist Pirate King, a dramedy following the latter days of celebrated real life artist Audrey Amiss and a journey she took with her psychiatric nurse. Kelly MacDonald and Monica Dolan star here in the newest UK comedy export to make you feel all the feels. Take a gander at the UK trailer here for its UK rollout (and maybe VOD?) to start on Oct. 27th.

2. Before launching in to undeniable stardom in Girls Trip, Tiffany Haddish didn’t get paid a cent for the first movie she starred in as it was a non-union role leaving her nothing more than a handful of DVD copies of the movie from the producers for her to sell (Variety). Just a friendly reminder about the importance of staying #unionstrong.

3. These are the dates and cities for Hasan Minhaj’s Off With His Head tour. Get tickets here quick as they’re already going very, very fast.

4. Our good friend Julie Seabaugh, who just happens to be, for our money, one of comedy journalism’s most preeminent voices, just published a book of her best interview and pieces, many of which are in their unedited, full form (i.e. everything that should have been fit to print). Wonderfully titled A Tight 20: Two Decades of Comedy Journalism, it is a must read/have for comedy fans of all kinds.

5. We remember a showrunner once telling us that it’s “show business, not show art”, though it’s clear now, more than ever, that the show business can’t really run without the show art.

A&E Set to Debut Two Part Black Comedy History Doc “Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution”

Undeniably, there is a wave of documentaries examining the history of comedy from every possible angle and at every degree. From covering individuals such as Dick Gregory, George Carlin, and even Bill Cosby to focusing on such changing attitudes in the form through the lens of 9/11 with Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11, there is an ever growing fascination of the inner workings of inciting laughter.

A&E is putting their hat in the ring here with Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat & Time Studios’ Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution, a two-part doc series that will trace the lineage of black comedians that defied racial barriers and sought to skewer the absurd inequalities that were just taken for granted, especially the ones based off the amount of melanin you had in your skin.

The likes of Tiffany Haddish, W. Kamau Bell, Michael Che, Steve Harvey, Sherri Shepherd, Wayne Brady, Aisha Tyler, DL Hughley, Amber Ruffin, and Katt Williams amongst other comics and historians will weigh in on the oft-overlooked milestones of black comedy (just compare Mike Binder’s The Comedy Store to Phat Tuesdays: The Hip Hop Era of Comedy).

Take a gander at what’s to come with this teaser for Right to Offend here, then look for its premiere on A&E on Jun. 29th & 30th at 9PM (then presumably streaming on aetv.com afterwards).

The time for the second season of the wild and phenomenal Tuca & Bertie is nigh. For awhile, we were all left wondering what the fate of the show would be as Netflix had relinquished any chance for a second season on their platform.

Thankfully, Lisa Hanawalt and company along with, of course, Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish, as Bertie and Tuca, all got their shot at a cooler network, Adult Swim. Once more, the wait for brand new Tuca & Bertie isn’t much longer as Jun. 13th has been set as the season 2 premiere date.

After some animatics, sneak peeks, etc. over the last several months, here’s a full gander at what’s in store for Tuca & Bertie or, rather, what they have in store for their lush animated world with the official season 2 trailer.

For a little while, we were left grieving the news that Tuca & Bertie wouldn’t be picked up for another season at Netflix. Then, Adult Swim gave Lisa Hanawalt and her beautiful, hysterical, otherworldly creation Tuca & Bertie another season, which we absolutely couldn’t wait for. There was an animatic released last year that gave us a bit of hope and excitement for what’s to come for the oddest bird couple.

Now, here‘s a full sneak peek, fully animated and just as charming and wild as you’ve come to expect, of season 2 of Tuca & Bertie.

There’s no specific premiere date (and what use are those anyway as everything changes all the time?), but it looks as though we can expect new episodes to start rolling out this Summer.

Tiffany Haddish Wins a Grammy and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm Gets 2 Oscar Noms

Though the Grammys and the Oscars aren’t anywhere nearly dedicated to celebrating comedy in any really big way, there was some good news from both for the art form of comedy.

First off, Tiffany Haddish won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album for the audio version of her Netflix special, Black Mitzvah. Haddish is the first black woman since Whoopi Goldberg won in 1986, a fact that gets adorably revealed here during a taping of Haddish’s current gig as host of Kids Say the Darndest Things. Of the big comedy specials that get Grammy consideration for Best Comedy Album, Haddish definitely earned her Grammy.

How I found out I won a Grammy while working on @KidsSayDarndest I am so Honored to share with the kids. Full situation is on my YouTube page. pic.twitter.com/pYzmt4nIgo

— Tiffany Haddish (@TiffanyHaddish) March 15, 2021

Earlier this morning, the nominations for this year’s Oscars were revealed and while there is a lot of talk about the amount of diversity and inclusion throughout all of the nominees. It should also be noted that Borat Subsequent Moviefilm‘s breakout co-star Maria Bakalova earned herself a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination alongside the film’s Best Adapted Screenplay nomination (going to Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, Dan Swimer, Nina Pedrad, Peter Baynham, Erica Rivinoja, Dan Mazer, Jena Friedman, and Lee Kern). It’s sort of wild to think of something like Borat Subsequent Moviefilm given the still crowded field of heart-wrenching prestige dramas, yet, here we are.

So, even though awards season presents a bunch of the entertainment biz congratulating itself, it does seem like it’s getting marginally better.

Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready Season 2 Gives a First Look

You might have noticed that the flow of brand new comedy specials hasn’t been the way that it used to be early on in 2019. A lack of new specials and a drying up of networks and streaming services’ comedy special reserves have made it so that we don’t even necessarily get a new special every week. That’s just the way things are due to the pandemic and that will just have to be that way for a while longer.

That being said, there’s still specials to be enjoyed, namely the latest edition of Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready. There’s a whole second season lined up featuring comedians handpicked by Haddish herself to highlight. That includes Kimberly Clark (a long time personal favorite of ours), Erin Jackson, Godfrey, Tony Woods, Barbara Carlyle, and Dean Edwards (not to mention the joyful grace of Haddish presenting the whole series).

See for yourself what’s to come with They Ready Season 2 with this very first trailer here, then look for it to start streaming on Netflix on Tues. Feb. 2nd.

So much of Tiffany Haddish’s spirit, both on stage with her comedy and off, is dedicated to uplifting people. Already she has done multiple showcases highlight her favorite comedians that she wants to share with the world via Netflix. She’s similarly motivated to start an internship program branded with her catchphrase, She Ready.

Haddish grew up in the foster care system and she is thusly making that the focus of The She Ready Internship Program. She’s looking to connect “transition-age foster youth with transformative experiences in the media, arts and entertainment industries.” The internships will serve Tiffany’s She Ready Productions has and it’ll kick off next year.

Get First Look at Amazon Comedy ‘Eulogy’ Special “Yearly Departed”

Though eulogies don’t really cross into the territory of comedy specials, this year hasn’t been a time for anything normal. Actually, 2020 is the focus of said special entitled, “Yearly Departed” and is a good-riddance send-off to the year that has and continues and will traumatize all of us living through it.

For 2020 getting kicked to the curb, this special has a marvelous and feisty line-up of comedy folks including Rachel Brosnahan, Tiffany Haddish, Patti Harrison, Natasha Legerro, Sarah Silverman, Natasha Rothwell, Ziwe, and Phoebe Robinson hosting for the evening.

It’s a roast of 2020 at 2020’s funeral and it sure looks like the socially distanced party had a hell of a time letting 2020 know what they thought of it (even though we’ll have to likely deal with so much of 2020 for a good chunk, if not most of, 2021).

Get your first look at YEARLY DEPARTED with its trailer here, then look for it to stream on Amazon Prime on the Eve of New Year’s Eve, Dec. 30th.

And Here Are Your Grammy Comedy Nominees for 2021

News

You might have seen that the nominees for the 2021 Grammys were announced this morning and, with that, there is just a handful of comedy folks that get the expressed distinction of being nominated for said Grammy. Usually, with how distribution of comedy specials work (i.e. most big time comedy specials get released as comedy albums somehow), comedy specials take up the bulk of the nomination slots and this year is no different (even though they were plenty of worthy stand-up albums that were released only as albums).

This year, the nominees for Best Comedy Album are:

Tiffany Haddish-Black Mitzvah
Patton Oswalt-I Love Everything
Jim Gaffigan-The Pale Tourist
Bill Burr-Paper Tiger
Jerry Seinfeld-23 Hours to Kill

All were specials on a big time streaming service and, four of out of the five were on Netflix. Still, Haddish and Oswalt offered up really uplifting specials and Burr got more introspective than he ever has with Paper Tiger.

Usually, the comedy category for The Grammys gets overshadowed by the dozens and dozens of other categories, but we’ll be watching closely for who wins on the CBS telecast of The Grammy Awards on Jan. 31st.

Since it looks more and more likely that the world will survive into 2021, there are things we can and will look forward to. A vaccine is at the top of most people’s lists, but a new season of Tuca & Bertie is up there.

Fresh from  this past weekend, Tuca & Bertie creator Lisa Hanawalt graciously gave a peek of a sneak peek with an animatic clip from season 2. Tuca & Bertie are together again at a strip club and, as is one of the magical things about this show, it’s a team of plant strippers are on stage.

Tuca & Bertie Is Being Revived at Adult Swim

It’s pretty clear to us that Tuca & Bertie, the animated series from Lisa Hanawalt that featured Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish’s voices as birds didn’t get enough of a chance over at Netflix. It was such a wildly imaginative, colorful, unique, funny world with a very lovable duo of Tuca & Bertie (that may be the successors to Broad City’s Abbi & Ilana for female friendship on TV?).

Announced this morning, Tuca & Bertie will be getting the greater chances that they deserve over at Adult Swim with an entirely new season due next year. That’s all the details for now, but, go watch/rewatch the inaugural season of Tuca & Bertie over at Netflix to get transported to the wild, lush, and nuanced universe that Hanawalt created.

Tiffany Haddish’s Black Mitzvah Is a Triumph of Positivity and Self-Realization

Tiffany Haddish’s latest hour special, Black Mitzvah, dropped on Netflix earlier this week and it’s perhaps the perfect holiday treat as far as comedy specials are concerned.

Though not specifically aimed at the holiday season, the hour captures a still vibrant and unapologetic Haddish through finding her place in being Jewish as well as dealing with her rocketing to genuine stardom (all while being the same she-ready Tiffany you’ve known and loved for years now). In fact, she even gets truly vulnerable in examining that one off-night she had for New Year’s that got blown way out of proportion (cough cough, double standard against female comics, cough) with her signature mirth and levity.

Yet again, Haddish does a rare thing that you see thing in stand-up these days by celebrating life and celebrating yourself, even at life’s inevitable low points. Her closing “dance” number is a pretty great illustration of this. If you haven’t given Tiffany Haddish’s Black Mitzvah a watch already, make your holidays better by doing so soon.

The magic of Tiffany Haddish’s verve, charm, and unapologetic positivity that has shot her into undeniable stardom is coming around once again with her brand new hour special, Black Mitzvah.

Are you ready? Even though Haddish has a joke about what having “She Ready” as a catchphrase really entails for her, she indeed still ready.

Tiffany Haddish’s “she ready” brand is so strong that she Netflix allowed her to handpick a whole line-up of comedians that she could highlight them as, indeed, “they ready”.

It’s a whole diverse line-up of female comedians that Tiffany clearly loves including: Chaunté Wayans, April Macie, Tracey Ashley, Aida Rodriguez, Flame Monroe and Marlo Williams.

In fact, her gushing over these women is almost enough of a selling point to get you to watch. Also, Tiffany picked well.

Look for Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready next week on Tues. Aug. 13th on Netflix.

Considering Lisa Hanawalt was instrumental to the creation of BoJack Horseman, it had us curious what her own show Tuca & Bertie about two Odd Couple-ish bird ladies would sound/feel/look like and if it would, be at all, similar to BoJack.

Well, this full trailer shows a world that’s, if you can imagine, a little more “out there”, brimming with more vibrant colors, and, in total, a rollicking universe that’s all it’s own with the voices of Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish leading the way.

See for yourself here, then look for episodes of Tuca & Bertie to start streaming on Netflix on Fri. May 3rd.

One of the shows we were most excited for coming into 2019 is Tuca & Bertie, a sort of Odd-Couple-esque animated series starring two middle-aged birdwomen voiced by Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong.

Well, the series premiere is just around the corner (all episodes start streaming on Friday, May 3rd on Netflix) and we we’re finally getting a first look into the show in this featurette that shows creator Lisa Hanawalt (who is getting upgraded from her gig at BoJack Horseman) and stars Haddish and Wong in the recording booth as well as them in their bird women form.

Somehow, we’re even more excited about Tuca & Bertie now.

Tiffany Haddish’s Next Hour Special Will Be Coming to Netflix in 2019

Just in case where you’ll be able to see Tiffany Haddish next after the bevy of movies, TV, and Groupon commercials this year, know that a new hour stand-up special is on its way to, where else, Netflix next year.

Since her last special was called “She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood!”, we’re curious as to what this next special will be called. She Ready! 2 The World Ready for Her? 2 She 2 Ready? The Last Black Unicorn Rides Again?

No matter what she calls it, this will be one of the bigger releases for Netflix next year.

It’s only the beginning of April, so don’t be surprised if this killer multi-hypenate career of Haddish expands even further before 2018 closes out.
