TCB Debriefing 2/5/24: Laura Peek, Grammys, Dick Turpin, Stand Up NY, Materialists, Alan Partridge, Worth the Wait, Jenny Slate, Karen Gillan, Joe DeRosa

February 7, 2024
News
alan partridge, amazon, dave chappelle, dick turpin, don't tell comedy, grammys, jenny slate, joe derosa, karen gillan, Laura Peek, mary tudor, materialists, noel fielding, stand up ny, ticket giveaway, worth the wait

1. Dave Chappelle won another Grammy for Best Comedy Album. Apparently, Chappelle has achieved a new milestone in his storied career of reframing the category of “Best Comedy Album” to award excellence in being massively out-of-touch and somehow failing upwards anyhow (as well as not recording a comedy album, but doing a special, then releasing the audio from said special to count as an “album”).

2. You’ll know the comedy category in The Grammys is fixed when people like the fan-f’n-tastic Laura Peek have a legit shot at winning. Just watch this Don’t Tell set and you’ll know what we mean.

3. Noel Fielding is returning to something more in his late (as opposed to hosting the Bake Off) with starring as one of history’s more charming highwaymen, Dick Turpin, in The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin. Kind of seems like Our Flag Means Death, but on land, no? Take a gander for yourself with the first official trailer here, then look for it to premiere on Apple TV+ on Mar. 1st.

4. The staffers of Stand Up NY are owed so very much and, as such, are going on strike. Please support them in earning a living wage through their GoFundMe here. Stay in the loop/share @stand_up_ny_strike on IG.

5. Celine Song is moving from her critically acclaimed feature debut of Past Lives into rom com territory with, potentially, Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans starring in a project called, The Materialists (Variety). Perhaps, Song will bring prestige back into romantic comedies (because well, Woody Allen isn’t going to do that).

6. Even though you didn’t know you needed more of him, Alan Partridge, Steve Coogan‘s most famous bumbling radio DJ character, is set to make a return and what a relief it is (Deadline).

7. Lana Condor is fashioning herself into a rom com star with her latest role in Worth the Wait, a “modern take on Love Actually (which hopefully means it’s less problematic)” boasting a majorly Asian American cast (Variety).

8. Get your full first look at Jenny Slate‘s hour, Seasoned Professional, here. This might be making comedy history as the first special to be taken seriously while done in shorts starting Feb. 23rd on Amazon Prime.

9. The coolest version of Mary Tudor is going to hit the big screen soon as one Karen Gillan will be playing one of history’s most famous Marys (Variety)

10. Free Joe DeRosa tickets! WE GOT FREE JOE DEROSA TICKETS HERE! GET YOUR FREE JOE DEROSA TICKETS HERE! (seriously, we got some free tix to Joe DeRosa at the swanky Peppermint Club; if you want ’em, just let us know at thecomedybureau@gmail.com)

11. We’ll leave you with this: One way to host SNL is get fired from it, appeal to whole demographic of disenfranchised men and libertarians with, admittedly, good comedic technique, get a Netflix special, and have SNL feel like they need to balance out their center left perspective for some reason?

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 111: Cricket Arrison & Tenderness in Absurdity

absurdist comedy, cricket arrison, dave chappelle, i think you should leave, netflix, russell peters, sketch comedy, wham city

As it has been for years and years now, the world is so absurd that trying to be absurd comedically is an incredibly daunting challenge. That still doesn’t stop such brilliant and amazing folks such as Cricket Arrison from finding ways to satirize the world and be comedically ludicrous in such the ridiculous, preposterous time that we live in. We chat with Cricket about how the gauntlet of the last few years has transformed both her comedy and herself as a person into something that’s still on the stranger side of the spectrum of hilarity, but more tender and, in so many way, beautifully funny.

Dave Chappelle Starting “The Midnight Miracle” Podcast with Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli; Maybe It’ll Be Chappelle’s Show 2.0?

April 22, 2021
News
dave chappelle, luminary, podcast, talib kweli, yasiin bey

Dave Chappelle shook up the world of comedy when going to Africa in the middle of the production of Chappelle’s Show 3rd season. It was 2005 and Dave Chappelle was unequivocally the biggest name in comedy back then and lines from the show’s sketches were probably quoted several times a second by people around the world.

As you well know, Chappelle took a long hiatus and then gradually started making his way back into stand-up probably clocking more stage time than any other comedian in history by doing shows or drop-ins that were infamous for often going far past two hours. Then, there was the official return with a whole row of Netflix specials and continuing to do stand-up, even releasing a “very special” special at the height of last Summer’s protests sparked by the murder of George Floyd.

Still, Dave has not taken the reins to his own show since 2006 and it hasn’t been the same since.

That all might change with the arrival of a new Luminary podcast The Midnight Miracle that Dave is doing with two of the most renowned rappers around, Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli. It “will feature conversations punctuated with sketches, impersonations, archival audio clips, a musical soundtrack and guest interviews.” (via Deadline). This teaser doesn’t reveal much of anything, but one can see how it very much be a continuation of Chappelle’s Show with that particular mix of things.

As to what exactly The Midnight Miracle will be, if it’ll even take on more of Dave’s more sobering tone these days than the more sarcastic and satirical nature of his legendary sketch series from over 15 years ago, and how much it will affect comedy history will just have to be seen when the podcast drops.

Dave Chappelle Tests Positive for COVID-19

January 22, 2021
News
covid-19, dave chappelle

(via Pitchfork)

Dave Chappelle was one of the few comedians that could tour with all the sort of precautions that one can take to do in-person shows during this COVID-19 pandemic. He had been doing socially distanced outdoor shows in Ohio and had just started doing them in Austin, TX. Despite rapid testing for the audience and going through daily testing himself, it was just announced by Chappelle’s reps that Chappelle has contracted COVID-19 asymptomatically. There’s no trace as to how he specifically got it yet, but, as we all know at this point, the spread of COVID-19 is so rampant that there might be no telling where he got it.

He has since cancelled those shows that he had scheduled and refunded any tickets bought. There’s no word as of yet, but we can only hope that the rest of those Austin crowds are COVID-19 free.

It’s important to note here that no sort of gathering is entirely safe during this pandemic and that you can only mitigate the probability of transmission. Chappelle utilized all the measures available to him to try to do shows and somehow, he still caught the virus.

There will inevitably be a period where things attempt to reopen in earnest and for good as the vaccine distribution moves forward. Yet, this is a perfect example of why the protocols that scientists have put in place to combat the spread of the virus will have to stay until the majority of the world’s population gets inoculated. Essentially, things won’t be safe until we all can be safe and we can only wish that this lesson will stick very soon.

Dave Chappelle’s Drops “8:46”, a Raw 27 Min. Special About George Floyd’s Murder in 8 Minutes and 46 Seconds

June 12, 2020
News
chris dorner, dave chappelle, george floyd, netflix, special

First, just go watch it. It’s free on YouTube here.

The moment we’re living in is one of extended, acute trauma. It’s everything happening all at the same time, bearing down on the entire globe.

So, what is comedy’s purpose in this time, especially when it has been already redefining itself as an art form under the COVID-19 pandemic? It’s a question that we have been pondering for weeks, especially since having the energy to attempt to be funny seems to be on short supply.

Cue Dave Chappelle and his nearly half-hour special 8:46 that was recorded only last week (outside with a socially distanced crowd in face masks) and released last night. Chappelle has never shied away from talking about crucial issues in his stand-up, sometimes in a controversial way, but he has gotten lengthier in his analysis of them in these years, especially when he released his first special after leaving Chappelle’s Show.

8:46, of course, denotes the amount of time that Derek Chauvin had his knee on George Floyd’s neck murdering him in broad daylight with three other officers standing passively by him. That is the entire focus of the Chappelle’s set, which Dave notes is material that he’s working out. It is as raw as Chappelle has ever gotten and often it’s not necessarily hysterical, but that is sort of the point. The tension is clear and we’re all meant to sit in it as we have been to feel it together within a space that is normally reserved for well-crafted bits, jokes, and social satire met with laughter and applause.

However, it’s illuminating in a way that comedic thinking can often highlight contradictions. In 8:46, Dave makes a brilliant connection between the saga of Christopher Dorner and George Floyd and the global outcry for justice. Ironically, Chappelle even confesses that he shouldn’t even be the one speaking out as the streets are doing a much better job of that. Dave utilizes the platform of 8:46 as a “comedy special” to juxtapose, as comedy so expertly does, disparate things that, actually, may be not be so disparate for a salient point. For now, that’s definitely something comedy can do in this historical moment.

Dave Chappelle’s “Sticks and Stones” Gets Announced by Morgan Freeman

Well, the fifth Netflix special, Sticks & Stones, from Dave Chappelle (also making it the fifth special since his long hiatus) is coming later this month.

Whoever was there for the taping definitely knows what to expect. For the rest of us, it’s hard to say as Dave plays things pretty close to the chest these days (more so than almost any other comedian probably), often announcing shows on the day of at very intimate venues and being an industry leader of those Yondr bags. Also, that last special at The Comedy Store’s Belly Room seemed more impromptu than a crafted hour.

So, this latest hour, to most of us right now, could be any number of things. We suppose that might be all part of Dave’s plan, a way to keep his mythos of being this living, breathing icon in comedy going.

No matter what your feelings of those four previous Netflix specials are (and lots of folks have mixed feelings about them), it’s very likely that we will all watch it because Dave indeed is still that aforementioned comedy icon.

Certainly, this teaser doesn’t tip off too much other than Dave is going to speak his mind as announced by none other than Morgan Freeman. We’ll just have to wait and see what’s going to happen on Aug. 26th when Sticks & Stones drops.

Dave Chappelle To Receive Mark Twain Prize for Humor

Dave Chappelle To Receive Mark Twain Prize for Humor

Often, people overlook what specifically the Mark Twain Prize for Humor is given out for and just end up thinking it goes to living legends in comedy. Specifically, the award honors that have a significant cultural impact, perhaps changing the way we think about things, via humor.

Dave Chappelle, arguably better than many other recent recipients, fits this bill perfectly. No matter what you think of Chappelle, both now and then, he has left an indelible mark on the country (and the world for that matter) with his comedy and has, for many, changed how they see things. Certainly, his acceptance speech will be watched closely (maybe more closely than most of these Mark Twain Prize speeches save for Will Ferrell’s).

His ceremony is set for Oct. 27th at the Kennedy Center and will air likely weeks later. Already, we’re wondering what the odds are that they’ll do a bit where he no shows and hides on another continent.

Dave Chappelle’s Age of Spin and Deep in the Heart of Texas Win This Year’s Grammy for Comedy

The two hour specials that Dave Chappelle put out just a year ago, marking his first stand-up releases in several years, landed him this year’s Grammy for Best Comedy Album. Chappelle won over a crowded field of comedy’s biggest stars, Jerry Seinfeld, Sarah Silverman, Kevin Hart, and Jim Gaffigan. In this popularity contest, the most popular won?

Obviously, at least in the public’s mind, this further cements Netflix’s domination in the world of stand-up as they’re behind the majority of the nominees and winners . With that in mind, it would be nice to see some indie comedy albums, or, at the very least, comedy albums from people who aren’t the most famous people in comedy get a nomination since they’re churning out some of best comedy out there.

Here’s the full list of Grammy Award winners for this year.

You can start counting down now to midnight tonight FYI.

Hopefully, that’s a good hint of what’s to come. Watch it here.

What will be interesting here is to see a brand new special, Equanimity, from Dave Chappelle as opposed to two hours that were taped and then shelved until they were sold to Netflix much later. That was the case with the two specials released earlier this year.

Lord knows that there are plenty of things for Dave to weigh in on including with what went on around his SNL monologue with Trump, apologize for saying to give Trump a chance, and, maybe, his stance on trans people.

Also, it would be nice to end 2017/starts 2018 with a great hour from Chappelle. Look for Equanimity to start streaming on New Year’s Eve.

Dave Chappelle Will Be Doing Another Residency at Radio City Music Hall Featuring The Roots, Chris Rock, Trevor Noah, Ali Wong, Erykah Badu, and Childish Gambino

In 2014, Dave Chappelle did a whole run of shows at the legendary Radio City Music Hall featuring guests like The Roots.

So, Dave is doing it again this August with plenty of the aforementioned big name guests. Tickets for this residency will go on sale this Friday.

After all these years, not one, but two Dave Chappelle specials are just one week away.

Shot in LA and Austin in 2016 and 2015 respectively, these specials have been tucked away for a minute, which leads up to believe that Dave could cue another special, probably, soon if he wanted to.

See Chappelle return to the mic for two specials in this trailer just released today.

Both specials start streaming on Netflix on Tuesday, March 21st.

Both Upcoming Dave Chappelle Specials Will Drop at Netflix at the Same Time

Remember, Dave Chappelle hasn’t released a stand-up special since 2004.

Sure, there’s plenty of stuff that he has done since then, but that gap in time contrasts sharply with many of comedy’s current biggest names cranking specials every year or so.

So, maybe, to make up for lost time, the two specials that Netflix ordered from Dave Chappelle will start streaming at the same time, Tuesday, March 21st and they’ll be coming from “his personal comedy vault”.

See for yourself in the teaser that not one, but two Chappelle specials are just a few weeks away.

This means that Netflix will have two Chris Rock specials and three Dave Chappelle specials coming up soon. Chappelle gave a great taste of what’s to come from his recent SNL monologue.

This will probably be the closest we’ll get to a new episode of Chappelle’s Show.

As a relief from the election being over next week perhaps, SNL has landed Dave Chappelle as a host for November 12th with guest A Tribe Called Quest.

This means that Chappelle will probably do some stand-up in the opening host monologue and undoubtedly have a hand in the sketches. This is kind of huge since Dave hasn’t really been as prominently featured on TV like this in over a decade.
