TCB Debriefing 2/5/24: Laura Peek, Grammys, Dick Turpin, Stand Up NY, Materialists, Alan Partridge, Worth the Wait, Jenny Slate, Karen Gillan, Joe DeRosa

February 7, 2024
News
alan partridge, amazon, dave chappelle, dick turpin, don't tell comedy, grammys, jenny slate, joe derosa, karen gillan, Laura Peek, mary tudor, materialists, noel fielding, stand up ny, ticket giveaway, worth the wait

1. Dave Chappelle won another Grammy for Best Comedy Album. Apparently, Chappelle has achieved a new milestone in his storied career of reframing the category of “Best Comedy Album” to award excellence in being massively out-of-touch and somehow failing upwards anyhow (as well as not recording a comedy album, but doing a special, then releasing the audio from said special to count as an “album”).

2. You’ll know the comedy category in The Grammys is fixed when people like the fan-f’n-tastic Laura Peek have a legit shot at winning. Just watch this Don’t Tell set and you’ll know what we mean.

3. Noel Fielding is returning to something more in his late (as opposed to hosting the Bake Off) with starring as one of history’s more charming highwaymen, Dick Turpin, in The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin. Kind of seems like Our Flag Means Death, but on land, no? Take a gander for yourself with the first official trailer here, then look for it to premiere on Apple TV+ on Mar. 1st.

4. The staffers of Stand Up NY are owed so very much and, as such, are going on strike. Please support them in earning a living wage through their GoFundMe here. Stay in the loop/share @stand_up_ny_strike on IG.

5. Celine Song is moving from her critically acclaimed feature debut of Past Lives into rom com territory with, potentially, Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans starring in a project called, The Materialists (Variety). Perhaps, Song will bring prestige back into romantic comedies (because well, Woody Allen isn’t going to do that).

6. Even though you didn’t know you needed more of him, Alan Partridge, Steve Coogan‘s most famous bumbling radio DJ character, is set to make a return and what a relief it is (Deadline).

7. Lana Condor is fashioning herself into a rom com star with her latest role in Worth the Wait, a “modern take on Love Actually (which hopefully means it’s less problematic)” boasting a majorly Asian American cast (Variety).

8. Get your full first look at Jenny Slate‘s hour, Seasoned Professional, here. This might be making comedy history as the first special to be taken seriously while done in shorts starting Feb. 23rd on Amazon Prime.

9. The coolest version of Mary Tudor is going to hit the big screen soon as one Karen Gillan will be playing one of history’s most famous Marys (Variety)

10. Free Joe DeRosa tickets! WE GOT FREE JOE DEROSA TICKETS HERE! GET YOUR FREE JOE DEROSA TICKETS HERE! (seriously, we got some free tix to Joe DeRosa at the swanky Peppermint Club; if you want ’em, just let us know at thecomedybureau@gmail.com)

11. We’ll leave you with this: One way to host SNL is get fired from it, appeal to whole demographic of disenfranchised men and libertarians with, admittedly, good comedic technique, get a Netflix special, and have SNL feel like they need to balance out their center left perspective for some reason?

SXSW 2022 Announces SXSW Comedy Festival Line-Up for This Year (Yep, the First One Since 2020)

February 28, 2022
News
asssscat, byron bowers, comedy festival, creek and the cave, eddie pepitone, jim gaffigan, joe derosa, john cleese, jon daly, matt besser, mitra jouhari, rosebud baker, shane torres, sxsw, the comedy store, three busy debras

In Jan./Feb. 2020, we were so excited that we were getting to go to SXSW for their big comedy shindig for the first time. For years, SXSW’s comedy off-shoot was a pretty big, fantastic swell of comedy in Austin, an already very solid, thriving comedy scene as is.

2020 was 2020 and, of course, that didn’t happen. SXSW was actually one of the world’s first major festivals to postpone indefinitely due to COVID-19.

Now, here in Feb. 2022, SXSW is thankfully resuming their comedy festival and are doing things up bigger than we remember from last time. From Mar. 11th-19th, those in attendance will get to see the comedy stylings of:

Alyssa Stonoha • Andy Haynes • Anthony Atamanuik • Blair Socci • Bonnie McFarlane • Bruce McCulloch • Byron Bowers • Camilla Cleese • Danielle Schneider • Doug Benson • Dulcé Sloan • Eddie Pepitone • Eleanor Kerrigan • Emma Willman • Ian Lara • Jessica Michelle Singleton • Jim Gaffigan • Joe DeRosa • John Cleese • John Gemberling • Jon Daly • Kiry Shabazz • Liza Treyger • Logan Guntzelman • Marina Franklin • Mary Lynn Rajskub • Matt Besser • Matthew Broussard • Mike Lawrence • Mike Yard • Mitra Jouhari • Nick Thune • Punkie Johnson • Rich Vos • Ricky Velez • Rosebud Baker • Sandy Honig • Scott Thompson • Sean Patton • Shane Torres • Stuart Goldsmith • Vanessa Gonzalez • Yamaneika Saunders

as well as special presentations/events:

Adult Swim Presents Three Busy Debras Season 2 Sneak Peek •  ASSSSCAT (the first in-person since 2020) • The Comedian’s Comedian • A Night at the Comedy Store • Comedy with the Cleeses • The Creek & The Cave • Doug Loves Movies • Find Your Beach • Gotham Comedy Club • improv4humans • Matt Besser’s 420 Show • Roast Battle • The Stand NYC • Wide World of Dougs • Would You Bang Him?

Since SF Sketchfest had to postpone again, this will be the first big comedy festival of 2022 and you wouldn’t want to miss that, now would you?

If you don’t already have a badge for SXSW, you best get on that right now, right here.

Can I Kick It? first came around in the glorious days of Nerdmelt @ Meltdown (RIP). It was a comedy show the hysterically dissected hip-hop by riffing on music videos, revisiting “out there” deep cuts, and even live rap battles.

Hosts, all great comedians and hip-hop aficionados, Tone Bell, Al Jackson, and Joe DeRosa will be bringing all of this and more to Hollywood American Legion Post 43 (2035 N Highland Ave.) this Sat., Jul. 20th at 8:30PM.

Tickets are only $10 and you can (and should) pick them up here.

We’ve got a good feeling that this show, The Professionals*, will be kind of like Tough Crowd with a modern twist (a thing we’ve been wishing would happen for awhile). Whether the comedians on the panel end up pulling off sounding like professionals outside of their areas of expertise or not, it’s an amazing line-up worthy of going to see do pretty much anything (we mean, just look at it).

Tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door. Go get them quick here.

Great FREE comedy, great FREE pizza from Prufrock Pizza (served at 7PM when doors open and available while supplies last), and a great happy hour courtesy of Deep Eddy Vodka is just a few hours away.

Honestly, it’s worth the trip downtown and we would never say that lightly.

We’ve got shows coming up and you should come to them.

Well, actually, it’s MANDATORY that you attend one of them (though, we promise it will be “fun”).

The other has free Prufrock Pizza and a nice, neat handful of our favorite performers. Also, it’s FREE.

We’re serious when we say that you should go to both our Mandatory Holiday Office Party at The Echoplex 12/12 and Water Cooler Talk at The Love Song Bar 12/5.

Through thorough surveillance of our own employees at The Comedy Bureau, we have found that talking at a water cooler during your break is one of the best parts of people’s day.

So, we’re trying desperately to copy that “vibe” and bring it to you in a night of comedy with our personal favorites that we’ve had our eyes on for years.

With assistance from Deep Eddy Vodka and DoLA, we will present comedic performances from  Laurie Kilmartin, Joe DeRosa, Michael Rayner, David Gborie for “Water Cooler Talk” to be hosted by TCB’s own Jake Kroeger.

Cool (and hungry) people should arrive early for free pizza from Prufrock Pizzeria between 7PM and 8PM while supplies last!

Water Cooler Talk will commence at The Love Song Bar on Tuesday, December 5th with doors open (and, again, free gourmet pizza) at 7PM and the show starting promptly at 8PM.

Last weekend, Joe DeRosa’s first hour special premiered on Comedy Central. We hope you didn’t miss it as DeRosa delivered a great hour of meticulously crafted, dark stand-up.

That being said, the album version of the special is now available so you can still listen to You Let Me Down if you didn’t see it on TV or you can just have to listen whenever you feel like it (as opposed to waiting for it to air again).

Get You Let Me Down off of iTunes here. Also, it’s streaming on Spotify.

Joe DeRosa’s brand new hour special, You Let Me Down, premieres tonight at midnight on Comedy Central.

Please watch Joe hilariously and brutally pick apart the world around him, which is wonderfully accented by the asymmetrically hung, scary paintings surrounding him.

Also, You Let Me Down will be available as an album from Comedy Central Records next week on Tuesday, February 7th.

Also, it has one of the cooler backdrops that has ever been in a stand-up special.

If you’re in Texas or have to go back to Texas for Thanksgiving, definitely consider going to Come and Take it.

Joe DeRosa Tells a Story of Why You Shouldn’t Take Life Lessons From ‘Goodfellas’

Goodfellas will forever be one of the stand out films of 1990 and in the crime/mobster genre of cinema.

Still, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t learn how to deal with people based on this violent movie.

Joe DeRosa highlights why that might be in this great story from This Is Not Happening.

Ron Funches, Drennon Davis, Joe DeRosa, and Rory Scovel Made Up a Faux-Christian A Capella Group at Outside Lands

According to our sources, there was, all of sudden, an empty slot to fill on the jam packed line-up at The Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival this past weekend. Live comedy has its own tent at the festival in San Francisco, which is why Ron Funches, Joe DeRosa, Drennon Davis, and Rory Scovel were there in the first place.

Yet, the four stepped up to fill the slot on the main stage apparently as the makeshift christian a capella group Ron Funches and The Five Footprints.

Watch these NSFW (or church for that matter) clips of what might be a literal once-in-a-lifetime performance.

When you’ve been a comedian long enough, you likely have a catalog of material that’s taped over the years that perhaps was great, but didn’t quite fit in certain places in albums or specials. Often, those bits just get lost in the archives, but Joe DeRosa has put them together in an entire album. In fact, it was so much, that he made it into a double album.

Thus, Mistakes Were Made: The B-Sides was born and we suggest getting it from iTunes as it was just released today and enjoying it soon as you can.
