Pick of the Day: The Jesse Miller Talk Show (in LA) 12/11

November 8, 2021

To this very day, Andre Hyland‘s creation, The Jesse Miller Talk Show, remains as one of the craziest and best talk shows we’ve ever seen (that includes any of the ones on TV all the way to ones that happen in someone’s apartment).

For the unfamiliar, The Jesse Miller Talk Show puts one Jesse Miller at the monster truck driver’s seat of his very own talk show that blends the outrageous energy of self-proclaimed media mogul that you might find outside of many 7-11s in LA that celebrities may have frequented with a seemingly unlimited capacity for pop culture knowledge and wordplay. Also, there’s heavy guitar shredding from Darryl (Paul Oyen) and plenty of PDA with his sidekick/boo Tanya (Anna Lee Lawson).

In short, it’s a good time and we’re glad to see that it’ll be going back up, in-person, on this side of the pandemic at Dynasty Typewriter on Sat. Dec. 11th at 10PM PT. So far, Jesse will be putting his dazzling interview tricks on display for Noël Wells, Mitra Jouhari, and a special surprise guest.

Tickets are $15 right now, so you best go snatch them up right now.

A live reading of the film classic Goonies with that very, very stacked cast and it all being done as a benefit for RAICES? Get. outta. town.

Well, actually, stay in town and go get tickets that are going from $35-$75 here. The Montalban is a pretty sizable venue, but you might want to get in on this before it sells out.

Watch Trailer for Mr. Roosevelt, Written and Directed by and Starring Noël Wells

As is sometimes the case with people who have a very short run at Saturday  Night Live, they flourish in their career post-SNL.

Jenny Slate is a great example of that and Noël Wells seems to be walking a similar path.

After a memorable turn on Master of None, Wells has made a debut as a writer/director/star with her film, Mr. Roosevelt. This film puts Wells in the spotlight in the very uncomfortable situation of staying with her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend.

See for yourself in the trailer, then look out for Mr. Roosevelt in theaters later this month on Friday, October 27th.

For 2017-2018, Comedy Central Announces a Reggie Watts Competition, New Negroes with Baron Vaughn and Open Mike Eagle, and Pilots from Arturo Castro, Neal Brennan, Noël Wells, and Awkwafina

It was already enticing enough to hear what Comedy Central has lined-up with late night thus far between Moshe Kasher, The President Show with Atamanuik’s Trump, Jim Jefferies, and Jordan Klepper’s new show.

Now, they’ve got a whole new chunk of programming and pilots that give a lot to look forward to.

Taskmaster, from Alex Horne, has Reggie Watts hosting a competition as the “taskmaster” between comedians performing “stupefying tasks”. New Negroes will be the TV adaptation of the live showcase hosted by Baron Vaughn and Open Mike Eagle featuring new black talent.

Comedy Central has also upped their digital series Alternatino with Arturo Castro and Delco Proper from John McKeever and Tommy Pope to full fledged TV pilots.

The other pilots include projects such as Neal Brennan interviewing celebrity guests in their home town, former Nightly Show contributor Franchesca Ramsey perhaps repackaging The Nightly Show, and a stand-up show from Jak Knight.

Scripted half-hour pilots include a South Side Chicago based comedy from Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin, a Queens based comedy following rapper/actress/comedian Awkwafina, an Austin based sitcom from Noël Wells, and an existential sibling comedy from Chris Kelly & Sarah Schneider.

From this, we can only hope that Comedy Central reaffirms its place in comedy going forward as Netflix, HBO, and FX are currently riding the high tides of critical praise and awards.

One of our favorite talk shows of all time is back, The Jesse Miller Talk Show. It’s hosted by Cincy’s own Jesse Miller (Andre Hyland) who simultaneously is a midwestern bad boy who also seems to have uncanny depth of pop culture knowledge.

Catch it on Friday, September 30th at the Hollywood Improv Comedy Lab at 10PM with guests Paul Scheer, April Richardson, and Noël Wells.

You can (and should) get your tickets here.

Earlier this year, we reported on an enticing R-rated animated feature in the works called The Adventures of Drunky that follows a bet for the fate of the planet between God and The Devil and a drunk.

From top billing to cameos, the cast is stellar including Sam Rockwell, Steve Coogan, Jeffrey Tambor, Dave Attell, Tyler The Creator, Abby Elliott, John Leguizamo, Jon Glaser, Jay Pharoah, Noel Wells, and James Adomian.

Sounds pretty great, right?

Well, Augenblick Studios has the script done and the dialogue recorded, but need funds to finish animating the whole thing. Thus, an Indiegogo campaign was born.

So far, they’ve raised $27,331 at the time of this post out of their minimum $100K goal. That will get them through the next step of production, but they’re looking to raise $2 million to finish the entire movie. They have just over three weeks to reach their goal and have fabulous rewards at various donations levels including lunch with Jeffrey Tambor, a personal insult voicemail from Dave Attell, digital copy of the movie and more.

Here’s God, as voiced by Jeffrey Tambor, and director Aaron Augenblick filling you in on all the details.

You can (and should) donate here.

Watch the Trailer for Aziz Ansari’s Netflix Series “Master of None”

As multicam sitcom adaptations of comedians’ lives were a thing of yesteryear, single camera adaptations of comedians lives with a bit more drama mixed in is where sitcoms as a genre are focused on, and rightfully so, right now.

Aziz Ansari’s upcoming series Master of None might be another example of why this sitcom trend keeps going as this trailer looks promising. Noel Wells as a co-star, cinematic look, and situations realistically drawn out from Aziz’s life (especially those dealing with his ethnicity and heritage) would seem to make for set of ingredients for something you’ll be binge watching soon.

Look for Master of None on Netflix on Nov. 6th.

Comedy Central Orders “Bad Couple” Pilot From Noël Wells and Flint Wainess

With sketch covered, it looks like Comedy Central is getting into more narrative, live action series.

The latest addition to Comedy Central’s development slate is a pilot called Bad Couple from former SNL member Noël Wells and real life significant other Flint Wainess. The premise of the series is pretty well summed in the title.

If this goes to series, we can’t help but think how Wells and Wainess as a bad couple would stack up against Jimmy and Gretchen on You’re The Worst.

One more round for (part of) the Parks and Rec gang?

Parks and Recreation creator Mike Schur and co-executive producer Alan Yang are back together with Aziz Ansari AKA Parks and Rec’s Tom Haverford for 10 episodes of a new series at Netflix.

Plot details are scarce, but the cast will feature Jon Benjamin, Noel Wells, and Eric Wareheim and Smashed and Spectacular Now director James Ponsoldt will direct.

No premiere date has been set, but the series is already in production.

It’s things like this that are making Netflix considered to be worth more than CBS, Viacom, and Twitter.

Noel Wells, John Milheiser, and Nasim Pedrad Not Coming Back to SNL

The contracts of Noel Wells and John Milhiser, much like Brooks Wheelan, were not renewed for the next season of Saturday Night Live. Nasim Pedrad is also leaving for Mulaney, which is making its series premiere this Fall on Fox.

With three cast members gone and the fate of the cast member who got bumped up from staff writer, Michael Patrick O’Brien, up in the air, one has to wonder if SNL will do a large casting overhaul for next season just like they did for this season.
