TCB Debriefing 10/23/23: Netflix Verified Stand-Up, Sophie Buddle, Ms. Pat, Whitney Cumming OFTV, If You Were the Last, Desus Nice

News
daily show, desus nice, don't tell, if you were the last, ms. pat, netflix is a joke, sophie buddle, stand up comedy, verified stand up

1. First, The Standups, then came The Comedy Lineup. Now, Netflix is having a (slightly) more creative name for their handpicked stand-up showcase series with Verified Stand-Up. Asif Ali, Dulcé Sloan, Gianmarco Soresi, Isiah Kelly, Leslie Liao, Nimesh Patel, Robby Hoffman, Rosebud Baker, Sabrina Wu, and Vanessa Gonzalez have short sets that will premiere on the streaming giant come Tues. Nov. 28th.

2. Please enjoy the oh so clever (and honestly, kind of naughty, but mostly very clever) Don’t Tell set from one of Canada’s finest comedy exports, Sophie Buddle.

3. Watch the amazing true story of Ms. Pat going from being a plaintiff on Judge Joe Brown to be a beloved touring headlining comedian that is going to have her own small claims court show on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

4. Whitney Cummings is doubling down on OFTV (the non-NSFW arm of OnlyFans) by having her sixth special, Mouthy, premiere and exclusive stream on OFTV come Nov. 15th. Already, she made a big splash with her first OFTV exclusive, The Roast of Bert Kreischer, presented by Cummings. So far, if you want to watch, OFTV doesn’t need a subscription fee or your e-mail (and we’re pretty sure not part of the AMPTP?)

5. Peacock is coming out what might be the cutest space based rom com with the Zoe Chao and Anthony Mackie two-hander, If You Were the Last. Take a gander here and, if you’re digging it, you can stream it now on Peacock.

6. FYI, it’s Desus Nice week at The Daily Show with still no permanent host.

7. We’ll leave you with this: generic rock really feels like the wrong pick for trailers for stand-up specials, despite it being the go-to trailer music for almost every comedy special promo.

Please Enjoy Jon Dore as Comedy’s HR Rep on “Humour Resources”

There has has to be a lot of ingenuity in making any sort of content throughout the pandemic (that isn’t over yet). Necessity being the mother of invention has led to tons of Zoom comedy, but also given us some genuinely funny shows such as Baited with Ziwe on Instagram Live.

Another such show that attempted to deal with the creative conundrum of COVID-19 and very much succeeded is the new CBC comedy series, Humour Resources starring Jon Dore and created by Adam Brodie, Dave Derewlany, and Dore. With the obstacle of so many things having to rely on the front facing cameras for any sort of human interaction, Dore stars as an alternate universe version of himself that has retired from stand-up comedy and chooses to become an HR representative for all of “Comedy” (if all of comedy was housed under one umbrella corporation).

The show is centered around Dore having HR meetings of all shapes and sizes with beloved Canadian and American comedians including Sarah Silverman, Courtney Gilmour, Dave Merheje, Nikki Glaser, Casey Corbin, The Lucas Brothers, Tom Green, Ronny Chieng, DeAnne Smith, Scott Thompson, Sophie Buddle, Eric Andre, Debra DiGiovanni, Arthur Simeon, Rory Scovel, Kyle Brownrigg, Aisha Brown, and Reggie Watts. Even though it’s technically an HR meeting, this feels like Dore’s über clever version of how he would do a late night panel interview if he were given the slot for a talk show.

Thus, there’s a delightful mix of The Office and Conan throughout, especially since Dore has to deal with a quietly chaotic suburban home life while trying to maintain the appearance of a professional member of a Human Resources department. For awhile, if you were in the U.S., you couldn’t really watch it freely, put Just For Laughs is graciously streaming episodes for free on their YouTube channel, releasing them one by one.

At the accommodation of your very busy schedule, you can (and should) enjoy Humour Resources here.

Please Enjoy Sophie Buddle’s Great American TV Debut on Corden

Harland Williams, Jon Dore, Nathan Fielder, Debra DiGiovanni, and Katie Crown are just a few names of amazing Canadian comedians that have made an indelible mark her in America with the very own unique brand of off-kilter humor. If you don’t already know, you might actually be more than pleasantly surprised the plethora of funny people that Canada has exported down South to the U.S. over several decades.

The latest arrival from up North is one Sophie Buddle who just made her very first American TV appearance by doing stand-up on The Late Late Show with James Corden. Sophie has fantastic way of luring in people with her subversively playful delivery and a splash of a stereotypically blonde on-stage persona, then serving up very sharp, delightfully mischievous punchlines.

Even the way she started off this set makes it seem like she’ll be so innocent and Buddle plays with that expectation hilariously.

So, enjoy Sophie Buddle’s Late Late Show set here.
