Yes, There’s So Much TV to Watch, But Seriously Binge and Enjoy “This Fool” Right Now

August 17, 2022
News
chris estrada, frankie quinones, hulu, jake weisman, matt ingebretson, pat bishop, this fool

Whether it’s The Bear or A League of Their Own or delving into all of Stranger Things once more because you’re obsessed, there is an abundance, perhaps an overabundance of TV to enjoy/work through in your weekly syllabus to keep up with the never ending class that so much of are in, Pop Culture 101. It’s clear this current “Golden Age of Television” is alive and well and has plenty more to give (we have no doubt that people are planning watch parties for The Rings of Power and House of the Dragon already).

One of the brand new series that’s keeping prestige TV going is This Fool, just released on Hulu. The creators of Corporate on Comedy Central, Jake Weisman, Matt Ingebretson, and Pat Bishop, teamed up with one of the LA comedy scene’s gem Chris Estrada to make a show that is uniquely it’s own single-cam sitcom version of how the other half lives in LA these days while maintaining a lot of the same darkly satirical verve that made Corporate so tantalizingly funny (Jake and Matt do make a cameo in This Fool, FYI).

Following an arc of the absurdities of trying to adapt to life after being incarcerated isn’t new territory for a comedy, but nearly every character in the show is fully realized in a way that offers nuance you probably wouldn’t find in a multi-cam with overlapping themes. In fact, such painstaking attention is paid to Frankie Quinones’ Luis, fresh out of prison and thrashing against life on the outside amidst adapting to it, and Michael Imperioli’s Minister Payne, the head of the show’s non-profit “Hugs Not Thugs” dedicated to reforming the formerly incarcerated that the show ends up sneaking in sharp commentary on prison, class, race, and mental health. That’s saying a lot for something is very much a pure comedy as opposed to the deluge of dramedies that keep coming out, hoping for an Emmy victory.

The authenticity of the show can’t be applauded enough. With Estrada’s life/stand-up serving as much of the spark, there is a clear telling of an original story from his perspective rather than another network trying to check off a diversity and inclusion box. In short, there isn’t a corny, performative feel to how the show has been crafted and its depictions of LA either South of the 10 or East of the 101. This seems to be quite the tall order these days at the network level. Also, Quinones, Imperioli, Estrada himself serve up such genuine performances that you can’t help but get enveloped in their endlessly flawed journey.

You can take a gander at all of this in the trailer here OR you can go stream all episodes right now at Hulu (a thing we highly recommend you do even if you feel like you’re overdoing it on prestige television).

Chris Estrada Series “This Fool” (FKA Punk Ass Bitch) Gets Ordered to Series at Hulu

(via THR)

When this got put in development as Punk Ass Bitch earlier this year with the likes of Pat Bishop, Jake Weisman, and Matt Ingebretson, the whimsically dark minds behind Corporate on Comedy Central, we were so thrilled that Chris Estrada was getting his due as a true, blue LA comedy favorite, widely regarded as so funny and one of the hardest working comedians in the whole LA scene.

Also, a series called Punk Ass Bitch getting put in the works by a major streaming service was more than pleasantly surprising.

We’re even more ecstatic to know that Hulu is ordering the now-titled This Fool to series, essentially giving Estrada his first marquee role and vehicle to deservingly introduce him to his widest audience yet (after numerous stand-up TV appearances). Specifically, the show will follow Chris playing a version of himself working at “a gang-rehabilitation nonprofit and his quest to overcome his co-dependency issues with his family as he navigates working-class life in South Central Los Angeles”.

Again, you really ought to give Chris Estrada’s stand-up a watch, whether it be on YouTube or on his HBO Latino special, to know why you should be so very excited as we are for the show getting picked up to series.

Also, kudos to Hulu for continuing to push forward with some of the most intriguing and engaging comedies on TV.

Hulu’s Latest Comedy Will Be ‘Punk Ass Bitch’ From Chris Estrada & Creators of ‘Corporate’

This is about as great as news can get for us right now.

Corporate was one of our favorite shows in recent memory for its ruthlessly dark humor in the clothing of a workplace comedy. Chris Estrada has been and remains one of our favorite comedians to see on all sorts of stages in and around LA (when we could do that of course).

So, the fact that Hulu’s latest series will be from Jake Weisman, Pat Bishop, and Matt Ingebretson, the minds behind Corporate, with Chris Estrada starring has us (as can be during COVID-19) ecstatic. The series, marvelously titled Punk Ass Bitch, will very much be inspired by Estrada’s stand-up, which, again, has some of the best bits and punchlines that we’ve heard in recent memory, and will see Estrada go out of his way as a “punk ass bitch with a heart of gold” that won’t help himself, but will go above and beyond for everyone else.

There’s no premiere date yet, but it’s one more thing that we’re legitimately excited for in 2021 that has nothing to do with getting the vaccine.

Corporate, one of the best dark workplace comedies in the entire pantheon of workplace comedies is returning for its third and final season next week on Comedy Central. If there ever was a time for seeing the inner workings of corporations unapologetically skewered, it would be now. It would almost seem like that feeling has been around for awhile, but it’s certainly more prevalent than ever with corporations putting their employees lives on the line during a pandemic just so they can all go back to work in person.

So, enjoy this trailer for the third and final season from creators and stars Jake Weisman and Matt Ingebretson following the never-ending quest of Hampton DeVille to own and run everything they possibly get their hands on here.

The final season premiere is Wed. July 22nd on Comedy Central.

For how unabashedly dark, stylish, and, of course, damn funny it is, we’re glad to hear that Corporate is getting one more season before their run ends. Jake Weisman, Matt Ingebretson, and Pat Bishop made one of the more daring comedies on TV and we can’t to see what they go for/get away with in their final season on Comedy Central.

That energy and vibe definitely carries through in this panel interview on Friday’s Colbert with Matt and Jake (especially including Matt’s hair). Watch and enjoy it here.

That’s How I Lost The Last One follows a flawed, sad man played exquisitely by Jake Weisman and has singular talent for losing girlfriends over and over and over again. It is every bit the antithesis to a romantic comedy, which is why we love it.

This Comedy Central digital series comes from the sinisterly comedic mind of Zane Rubin and will probably be a go to for us when Valentine’s Day rolls around again.

Watch and enjoy all three episodes here.

Watch Stars and Co-Creators of Corporate Jake Weisman and Matt Ingebretson’s Interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers

We’re thrilled that Matt and Jake’s first time on late night is because they are the stars and the co-creators of their first TV series, Corporate.

In our opinion, they were prime for a stand-up spot for quite some time, but doing panel interview for your TV show is pretty fantastic too.

Watch and enjoy them further impressing the dark brand of humor in this interview with Seth Meyers.

Then, for the love of whatever you believe in, watch Corporate premiere on Wed. Jan. 17th at 10PM.

Jake Weisman, Pat Bishop, and Matt Ingebretson Dark Workplace Comedy “Corporate” Will Finally Premiere in January 2018

Our excitement for this show has sustained for several months now as Pat Bishop, Matt Ingebretson, and Jake Weisman’s slick, yet dark sense of humor is right up our alley.

Just look at Weisman obsession with taking pictures with knives, even when he’s announcing the premiere date of his show.

In any case, mark down Wednesday, January 17th, 2018 as the series premiere date for Corporate.

Also, here’s a brief teaser if you need a bit of a taste of what’s to come.

Comedy Central Orders “Corporate” from Matt Ingebretson, Jake Weisman, and Pat Bishop to Series

(via Deadline)

Workplace comedy is about get taken to a more wonderfully dark place than it probably has ever been.

If you’ve enjoyed WOMEN Comedy at all like we’ve done all these years, you’d know that Comedy Central ordering a workplace comedy series from two of the four members of WOMEN Comedy, Jake Weisman and Pat Bishop, and the very darkly funny Matt Ingebretson is something to celebrate, even if you’re by yourself right now.

The series is called Corporate and will star Jake and Matt as two junior executives that do the dirty work for their bosses at a gigantic corporation called Hampton DeVille. Pat took on directing the pilot and we can only imagine that he’ll continue behind-the-scenes (and probably cameo from time-to-time) like he’s done for so many of their sketches over the years.

We’d guess that it might be akin to one of our favorite WOMEN sketches, Hour Long TV Drama.

Comedy Central Orders “Corporate” Pilot from Matt Ingebretson, Jake Weisman, and Pat Bishop

(via Deadline)

Oh, we don’t know all the details, but really hope this goes to series soon because we suspect Matt, Jake, and Pat have something incredibly dark, but damn funny cooking.

Matt Ingebretson, Jake Weisman, and Pat Bishop have all made their way through the LA comedy scene doing stand-up and making various very funny sketches videos as Women Comedy, under their own names, etc.

Now, they’ve got their own pilot called Corporate, which will delve into the underbelly of the corporate world in a richly dark, satiric manner over at Comedy Central.

We can’t for sure, but perhaps it might be something a little like this fantastic Women sketch that Pat and Jake made awhile back.

Jake Weisman doesn’t drink so when Brad Gage made a slight adjustment to his Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee-esque series with getting intoxicated thrown in to have him on. (Brad is 100% sober during the whole thing).

It was worth it.

Really, Weisman is worth having in your car to chat about how terrifying life can be whether he’s stoned or sober.

Through the ride, you do, however, find out situations where it would be best not to be high.
