TCB Debriefing 9/11/23: Rotting in the Sun, Yorgos Wins Venice, Daniel Van Kirk, Comics Unleashed

September 11, 2023
News
byron allen, comics unleashed, daniel van kirk, jordan firstman, poor things, rotting in the sun, sebastián silva, venice film festival, yorgos lanthimos

1. If you’ve been wondering what Jordan Firstman has been up to post-Search Party and beyond his IG characters, he’s been part of one of the more meta-films to come out in recent memory. In what might be the latest Sundance gem Rotting in the Sun, Firstman plays himself trying to collaborate with esteemed Chilean director Sebastián Silva (and then some) who is played by none other than Sebastián Silva. The trailer promises something equally trippy and sharply satirical, which proved to be buzzworthy at Sundance. Take a gander for yourself here, then look for Rotting in the Sun in limted release now and then on MUBI beginning Sept. 15th.

2. All hail comedy auteur Yorgos Lanthimos and his latest work, Poor Things, for winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival (i.e. the best film a la the Palme D’or at Cannes). We have a sneaking suspicion that Poor Things could be this (or next) year’s Triangle of Sadness.

3. The unforgettable Daniel Van Kirk is going all over the U.S. of A for his Rose Gold Tour (that’ll culminate in a taping of his latest special in Chicago), spreading his homespun, yet sharply crafted tomfoolery far and wide. Get in on that tickets right now at danielvankirk.com.

4. Byron Allen’s Comics Unleashed is coming to late night (THR). The end of The Late Late Show and the double strike has CBS (and every other network) at an impasse with what to put on their programming schedule after 10:30pm. The long standing comedian showcase, Comics Unleashed, where Byron Allen often just brings up the topic of a comedian’s joke to make it seem like they’re having a panel discussion, will not only fill in for a late night slot, but will, in its just-ordered limited run on CBS, be the only instance of new stand-up comedy on linear TV.

5. Speaking of the double strike, NBCUniversal Studio Group (guess Comcast NBC Universal wasn’t that catchy?) has suspended their deal with almighty Lorne Michaels (Deadline). Perhaps, this will amount to an actually edgy season of SNL whenever it comes back?

6. So, the AMPTP’s angle is to try to pretend like the strike’s not happening at a Drew Barrymore Show taping? We could have swore that they hired a new crisis PR firm to better their image, but, with shenanigans like this, maybe not?

Pick of the Day: The Lyric Comedy Hour with Daniel Van Kirk and Irene Tu (in LA) Wednesdays Starting 1/18

News

As you settle into remembering to date everything with 2023, you should also remember that the Lyric Hyperion is re-reopening with both a renewed vigor and a reverence for what the hallowed theater space used to be pre-pandemic. There is so much that’s up the sleeve of new new Lyric Hyperion that you should check out (and that we’ll highlight for you here) in the coming weeks and months (and, hopefully, years).

One of those many things will be a weekly stand-up show co-hosted by treasured LA comedy staples Daniel Van Kirk and Irene Tu called The Lyric Comedy Hour. On Wednesdays at 7:30PM starting Jan. 18th, Van Kirk, Tu, and the Lyric will bring together a nice and tight round-up of the city’s very best comedians, both established and ones that you should be on the look out for.

The inaugural Lyric Comedy Hour will have one hell of a line-up with Rory Scovel, Chris Estrada, Beth Stelling, and Ever Mainard.

Tickets are only $10 and you can (and should) get them every week here.

They’re doing the latest crossover with one of the best storytelling podcasts around, The HoneyDew with Ryan Sickler. Sickler will join DPT’s The Sklar Brothers and Daniel Van Kirk to revel in the zeniths of dumb news ’round the world.

Also, the sweet sounds of The Cactus Blossoms will grace this live-stream as well.

Pick of the Day: Pen Pals Podcast LIVE! on Zoom 8/28

One of the most calming, reassuring, life affirming, and  podcasts that we’ve enjoyed pre- and during this pandemic (and will undoubtedly enjoy well after all of this is over) is Pen Pals. The duo of Daniel Van Kirk and Rory Scovel answering letters genuinely, though, often, with a very healthy dose of silliness is a refreshing break from everything.

For those have yet go to #F2F, you should really get into the podcast here (you’re going to want to start from the beginning if you want to know what #F2F is and, more importantly, get a chance to get in line and go #RRGT).

In any case, you really ought to enjoy the camaraderie, community, and mirth in a live-over-Zoom version of Pen Pals that will be happening Fri. Aug. 28th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. You can (and very much should) RSVP here to get specific instructions on purchasing tickets.

The Sklar Brothers and Daniel Van Kirk are returning to the Nowhere Comedy Club for another virtually live edition of Dumb People Town. The beloved podcast has kept going throughout quarantine covering the troubling rise of the denizens that are the namesake of the show.

Of course, every live edition of the podcast is special as there is beginning invocation of the patron saint of Dumb People Town, Jan Flato and very special guests, which, this time around, will be none other than the quintessential American Dad of Comedy, Jim Gaffigan.

This latest edition of Dumb People Town is set for Sat. Aug. 15th at 6:30PM PT/9:30PM ET. Tickets are going for $20-$40 and you can and should go get them here.

daniel van kirk, nowhere comedy club, stand up

In these times, you probably know and enjoy Daniel Van Kirk from the splendid trio of podcasts Pen Pals, Dumb People Town, and The Good Night Show. Before the world closed up, especially when it came to live comedy, seeing Daniel’s stand-up in person was something special, mischievous, and deeply genuine. His album Thanks Diane is still one of our favorites in recent memory. So, if you got a chance to see Daniel do stand-up again, you should take it.

Daniel just happens to be headlining the popular virtual comedy club, The Nowhere Comedy Club, this Thurs. Jul. 16th at 6PM PT. Tickets are almost entirely sold out, but you can snag one for $10 if you’re quick enough right here.

Daniel Van Kirk’s “Thanks Diane” Is One Hell of a Debut Album

Not that there’s a real traditional road to and through stand-up comedy these days, but Daniel Van Kirk’s road there has certainly been circuitous and he’s all the better for it. Thanks Diane, his debut comedy album, is the great summation of Van Kirk’s years of comedic excellence in playing characters (including one of the best Mark Wahlberg impressions around), podcasting (Pen Pals, Dumb People Town, Hindsight), and incredibly earnest storytelling.

This hour (derived from his Together Tour) is a magnificent, fully realized piece of postmodern comedy. As opposed to a stitched together hour of bits that make up several comedy specials/albums (including some very good ones), there’s a clear intentional thematic and formalistic arc on Thanks Diane that is very satisfying and unlike nearly everything we’ve listened to or seen in recent memory. Daniel does weave through stories and experiences in his life, as he is a spectacular storyteller, but he also has such a great feel for oscillating in front of and behind the fourth wall with the crowd. It’s an immersive, trenchant, and hysterical journey topped off with a touch of lovable chaos.

Daniel Van Kirk’s debut album Thanks Diane comes out this Friday, Nov. 15th, but you can (and absolutely should) pre-order it now (and get a track in advance) here.

One of LA’s long running comedy house shows, Comedy Living Room, is now being done in VR coming up this week through JASH and AltspaceVR.

The line-up is pretty fantastic and with someone like Paul Scheer on the show, you’ve got to wonder what shenanigans he’ll try to pull with it being a VR comedy house show.

Also, to all of those without a VR headset, you can enjoy the show on your desktop or laptop computer.

If You Loved Sklarbro County, You’ll Love ‘Dumb People Town’ on Feral Audio

Basically, Sklarbro County packed it up at Earwolf (note: Sklarbro Country is still proceeding as usual on Earwolf), changed its name to Dumb People Town, and moved to Feral Audio.

Jason Sklar, Randy Sklar, Daniel Van Kirk, and a guest all riff on stories on dumb people doing dumb things that make the news like they have for hundreds episode, but just under the new and more appropriate moniker, Dumb People Town.

Their first episode with guest Nick Thune is up at Feral Audio now and has, as you might have grown accustomed to, plenty of top shelf riffing.

Daniel Van Kirk Writing Digital Sketch Series “Attention Deficit Theater” Starring and Produced by Jaime King for The CW Seed

(via Deadline)

The series is created by John Montgomery and is apparently not just using “attention deficit theater” as a cool name.

The CW has been on a hot streak with comedy with Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. We’re glad to see that they’re bringing that streak to their digital platform, CW Seed with a new comedy web series actually focusing on the ins and outs of attention deficit disorder with the likes of Jaime King at the forefront.

We’re excited to know that Dan Van Kirk, who we’d hope you would know from so many great Earwolf podcasts, his stellar Mark Wahlberg impression, etc., will be writing the 10 episodes of the sketch series that have been ordered.

When this drops early next year, this will definitely be worth checking out.

In real life or in parody, you’re probably not going to get a better bipartisan presidential debate than this one recorded live at UCB Franklin this week. It was put on by the amazing James Adomian and Drew Droege, appropriately called Decision Election 2016 All-Star Clusterf*ck with:

James Adomian as Sen. Bernie Sanders
Drew Droege as Carly Fiorina
Heather Anne Campbell as Sec. Hillary Clinton
Seth Morris as Gov. Lincoln Chafee
Fortune Feimster as Donald Trump
Ian Karmel as Gov. Chris Christie
Ryan Perez as Sen. Ted Cruz
Chris Schleicher as Gov. Martin O’Malley
Daniel Van Kirk as Gov. Jeb Bush
Jerry Minor as Dr. Ben Carson
Mike Still as Gov. Mike Huckabee
Veronica Osorio as Sen. Marco Rubio
Neil Casey as moderator

If you’re feeling conflicted about watching SNL tonight because of Trump, watching this will more than make up for it.

Daniel Van Kirk has never been coy about his love of Chili’s. He mentions it all the time on The Sklar Brothers’ Sklarbro Country to the point where listeners of the podcast were urged and followed through with a Twitter campaign to get Van Kirk to be the new spokesperson for Chili’s.

Just check out the thousands of tweets for the hashtag #DVK4Chilis to see what we’re talking about.

So now, Daniel Van Kirk has indeed been made into a Chili’s spokesperson and will be even taking over their Twitter account tomorrow Dec. 12th at 1PM PST.

From the guy who does a myriad of amazing characters on so many of your favorite podcasts, the best impression of Mark Wahlberg and web series DVK, perhaps Old Navy has a new rival for funniest spokesperson.

By this point, we’d hope you’d be familiar with Daniel Van Kirk’s mastered and hilarious impression of Mark Wahlberg that he’s done anywhere from Comic-Con to Set List: The Improvised Stand Up Show.

He’s now doing an entire show on Aug. 21st at 7PM at UCB LA as Mark Wahlberg with the following description: Musician, Model, Actor, Producer, Entrepreneur, Inspiration, Better Than You. After decades of using his knowledge to only benefit himself, Mark Wahlberg has teamed up with other celebrities and famous friends for “The Wahlberg Solution!” a round-table discussion of current news and events that will sort out the world’s problems as only A-List celebrities can.

It will be called The Wahlberg Solution and will feature Emily Maya Mills, Madeline Walter, and Kenny Stevenson as various “celebrity friends”, but, more importantly, Earwolf is recording this live performance that they will later release for all of us not lucky enough to be at UCB LA next Thurs.
