Pick of the Day: Jena Friedman (in NYC) 4/4

March 22, 2024
News
jena friedman, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

The brilliant Jena Friedman has been meticulously crafting her new hour pretty much exclusively in LA, but, thankfully, is starting to branch out the Los Angeles city limits to bring her oh-so-cleverly rendered and timely dark humor to rest of the U.S.

She has a whole handful of tour dates ahead of her, but she very specifically playing Brooklyn’s Union Hall in April. Specifically, she’ll be working on her new hour on Thurs. Apr. 4th at 7:30PM (and probably have a wondrous opener TBA). It has been pretty much a whole year since Jena was in NYC last, so don’t miss out on catching her this time around at $24.63 a pop.

Get tix here.

TCB Debriefing 9/19/23: Dream Scenario, John Waters, Heather McMahan, Russell Brand, Among the Dead, Second City NYC, Jena Friedman

1. It seems like the Nicholas Cage from Weather Man (i.e. an entrancing balance of nuance and “going full Cage”) is back in Dream Scenario, a comedy of literal dreams, from rising star Norwegian director Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself). Simply put, Cage plays a rather ordinary professor who, all of sudden, starts appearing in everyone’s dreams. If that’s not the perfect role for Cage, we don’t know what else would be. Take your first gander at Dream Scenario here.

2. When the word “cult” is being used an appreciative adjective rather than a disturbing noun, there might not be a name more synonymous with that iteration of the word than filmmaker and cultural icon, John Waters. As such, it’s about time that he got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and this week saw that momentous event come to pass. Unsurprisingly, Waters gave what very well be the best Hollywood Walk of Fame acceptance speech ever.

John Waters speaks at the unveiling of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame: "Here I am, closer to the gutter than ever!"

3. Heather McMahan will be the latest beloved, headlining comedian to go the route of self-producing their special and then Netflix buying it as Netflix announced the release of her hour Son I Never Had slated for Oct. 17th (THR). Has Netflix finally gotten closer to the bottom of what seemed like bottomless pockets?

4. With multiple investigations going into allegations of sexual assault, rape, and emotional abuse by Russell Brand, both the BBC and Channel 4 in the UK have removed all content featuring Brand (Deadline). They cited the reasoning of it “…falling below public expectations,” which makes some sort of sense since Brand never really outdid his performance in Forgetting Sarah Marshall (where he played a sex obsessed rock star, mind you).

5. The zombie film and TV subgenre is so expansive that it very well could almost be its own genre separate from horror. Case in point, there is a Japanese, English-language zombie mockumentary in the works from Japanese comedian Shinagawa Hiroshi  and writing duo Midnight Pizza called Among the Dead (Variety). Like the depictions of zombies themselves, zombie films are getting smarter and more complex.

6. Following recovery from both the pandemic and an internal reckoning that changed the entire structure and ownership of legendary comedy institution, Second City, it’s beautiful news to hear that Second City NYC will open its doors on Nov. 16th (Brooklyn Vegan). We’re even more thrilled to hear that former Asylum NYC AD, the amazing Alan Kliffer, will be their Artistic Director.

7. No one does dark humor quite like Jena Friedman, which is why you should take every opportunity to go out and see her shows. Here are four shows she’s lined up for her “Not Funny” Tour, but we won’t be surprised if more dates get added.

8. We’ll leave you with this: If you do 10,000 hours of bad stand-up, you’ll be mastered at bad stand-up.

TCB Debriefing 7/18/23: Liz Miele’s JET-LAGGED, Rebel Wilson’s Bride Hard, This Fool S2, Jena Friedman/AI

July 18, 2023
News

1. The delightful Liz Miele captured a beautiful snapshot of what exactly it’s like to 1) tour as a comedian on your own, 2) tour internationally, even in non-English speaking countries, and 3) what it’s like to “do crime” abroad with her docu-series JET-LAGGED. Watch, learn, and enjoy here.

2. Though the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes have effectively shut down all of Hollywood, a handful of indie productions can apply for waivers to continue. Rebel Wilson’s Bride Hard was just granted said waiver from SAG-AFTRA (THR). Bride Hard sounds like a studio rom com and we’re thoroughly curious what Wilson has up her sleeve with this being an indie (maybe it’s a little more wonderfully chaotic?).

3. In case you’ve got caught in strike news, don’t forget that the second season of the already critically acclaimed This Fool is due out on Jul. 28th on Hulu. Get your first taste of what should be an Emmys contender very soon here.

4. Jena Friedman, a comedian who has written some of the best abortion jokes in all of comedy, asks AI to write abortion jokes and here’s what happened.

5. If you’re thinking about buying tickets to a comedy show, please do so sooner rather than later. Comedians/comedy producers love pre-sales and get anxious about people buying tickets last minute.

Pick of the Day: Jena Friedman + Samantha Bee: Not Funny (in NYC) 4/21

News
jena friedman, not funny, nyc comedy, samantha bee, strand books

If you’re reading this, we wouldn’t be surprised at all if you’re very into dark, political comedy on TV, on stage, on your podcasts, etc. Thus, comedians Jena Friedman or Samantha Bee doing anything should be occasion enough to make/change your plans to go see them.

Well, lucky for you NYC that Jena has a brand new book of essays, Not Funny: Essays on Life, Comedy, Culture, Et Cetera, coming out and is doing a very special event with none other than Samantha Bee at NYC’s treasured Strand Book Store to celebrate its release. Undoubtedly, there will be some live reading of a book that’s worth your time and money and some sharply observed dialogue, but we’re sure that the comedy of Friedman and Bee together will pair perfectly with the times we’re living in.

This special book release event for Not Funny: Essays on Life, Comedy, Culture, Et Cetera is set for Fri. Apr. 21st at 7PM at Strand in their Rare Books Room. Tickets are $13.81 and you can (and should) go get ’em here. Also, you can (and should) get a signed copy of the book from Strand here.

Jena Friedman Is Back to Making One of the Most Daring and Hysterical True Crime Shows with Season 2 of Indefensible (Teaser)

October 7, 2022
News
casey anthony, indefensible, jena friedman, season 2

To this day, not enough credit has been given to Jena Friedman and the hysterical, but also crucial work she has done with Indefensible. Simultaneously highlighting tragic stories that have been buried because of the microsecond news cycle and an incredible flawed justice system and honoring the memory of the victims all while making fun of bad people to their face is still something we’re marveling at this very moment.

Thank goodness that Jena got to do another whole season of the groundbreaking series that will air/stream on Sundance TV and AMC Plus. The cruel irony is that there are so many true crime stories that involve people botching up the investigation or the trial and then, subsequently, trying to cover their track or limit their culpability that there could be an endless number of seasons for this show.

Just watch this season 2 teaser for Indefensible here where Jena finds the one guy who thinks Casey Anthony is innocent and you’ll see what we’re saying.

Then, be sure to mark down Thursday, October 27th at 10PM to watch new episodes of Indefensible.

Get Your First Look at Jena Friedman’s Special Ladykiller (Done While Pregnant After Roe v. Wade Got Overturned)

September 15, 2022
News
abortion jokes, comedy special, jena friedman, peacock, stand up comedy

The precedent for abortion access in the U.S. in known as Roe vs. Wade was overturned on Jun. 24th, 2022 after essentially being the law of the land since its inception 1973. America in 2022 was already in a bizarro dark timeline that has only gotten darker with an overly activist conservative Supreme Court giving license to individual states to take away abortion access from women, which several states have done very quickly already.

Thus, abortion jokes are especially charged now, even more so than already were in decades past and there are few comedians that craft better abortion jokes than one Jena Friedman. This will undoubtedly be showed off spectacularly in Jena’s upcoming Peacock special, Ladykiller that not only will have a heavy focus on the battleground topic of the moment, abortion, but done so while she is very far along in her pregnancy. Jena has always wielded her dark sense of humor mightily when it comes to joking about the most controversial issues of the day, but this latest hour might be more special and affecting than when she seemingly risked her life to doing a satirical interview with computer-security-tycoon-turned-international-fugitive, John McAfee, when he ran for President.

Just see for yourself in the first trailer for Ladykiller here, then look for this latest hour from Jena on Fri. Sept. 30th, exclusively on Peacock.

Pick of the Day: Jena Friedman-Ladykiller Special Taping (in NYC) 7/15

Jena Friedman was already one of the most crucial voices in comedy, dedicating her needle-sharp material to topics and issues that have only become more pressing over the last few weeks. When it comes to the agency and freedom of women, Jena stands tall with some of the best, dark jokes being told on stages today or on her series, Soft Focus or Indefensible.

So, Jena is taping an hour special, Ladykiller, next week for Peacock that will be a great, long-awaited follow-up to American C*nt. There will be two tapings on Fri. Jul. 15th at 7PM ET & 9PM ET at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. It’s free to attend so long as you’re fully vaccinated. Go reserve tickets here.

Indefensible with Jena Friedman Might Be the Best True Crime/Comedy Show This Year or in Recent Memory

November 12, 2021
News
indefensible, jena friedman, sundance tv, true crime

The genre of true crime is so popular at this very moment in time that it would almost seem that there was never a time where it wasn’t frequently the main focal point of casual conversations. As you probably very well know, comedy has even benefitted from such a boon as many of the top comedy podcasts often are the top true crime podcasts and, more importantly, are some of the top podcasts in general. My Favorite Murder and Last Podcast on the Left have earned such popularity that they’ve been able to go on global tours and launch their very own podcast networks on the strength of each of their individual following.

That’s all to say that the intersection of comedy and true crime has been very fertile ground for content over the last several years.

However, what about that ever-debated notion of whether comedy can actual make a difference, be funny and make a cohesive and incisive point, and move the needle towards making people’s lives better rather than just be more exploitative than not for some comedic shock value? We believe that Jena Friedman is doing the work to make that a reality, most recently, with her brilliant series, Indefensible with Jena Friedman.

Firstly, she focused her whole set on Conan in 2019 to this obsession with true crime, especially in regards to women since stories of serial killers and mass murderers paint a truly terrifying world that we live in. Following that, Jena has gone several extra miles to not just source comedy from the tragedy that are all these stories of harm, but satirically, yet cogently highlight the most toxic corners of humanity and why we need to not let such things happen again. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case in comedy when joking about serial killers.

This journey continued with a couple of specials under the banner of Soft Focus with Jena Friedman over at Adult Swim where she got to cleverly get under the skin of such infamous figures as John McAfee, the ex-tech-mogul-turned-international-fugitive during a face-to-face interview.

Indefensible takes Jena’s work to whole other level as she has the canvas of an entire series to dissect the literally fatal flaws in our legal system as well as the ever present biases that prevent proper justice violence against the most vulnerable in our society.

Also, she gets to make dick jokes at high powered lawyers’ expense to their face, leaving them befuddled as if they just found out that they were on some high brow prank show (note that Jena did write on Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm).

It’s very satisfying and hysterical and something that no real true crime or hidden camera comedy sketch show has ever done to our knowledge (save for Colbert at Bush for the White House Correspondents Dinner). The resulting effect is a demystifying of the oft-unquestioned authority of prosecutors, defense attorneys, and the legal system as a whole and some of the most engrossing, hysterical real life moments on TV. The way that Jena almost effortlessly allows some of her interviewees to corner themselves is truly masterful and is absolutely must-watch TV.

At the same time, she takes great care to respect the voices and privacy of the victims, many of whom did not get the justice that they deserve and speaking to many experts in the field about why, again, justice isn’t being served when it most certainly should be. As we hinted at above, this isn’t just about punching up at people who deserve it for a good laugh, but, as Jena has done in all the time that we’ve known her, trying to make a tangible difference for a clear and present danger.

We can only hope that she gets renewed for several seasons so she could can keep doing her important work on behalf of the voiceless and marginalized and crafting and telling some of the best dark jokes in comedy history.

You can now stream episodes of Indefensible with Jena Friedman on Sundance TV.

Yes, Jena Friedman Picks Apart the Sexual Proclivities In and Around Murder Cases in “Indefensible” (Exclusive Clip)

October 12, 2021
News
indefensible, jena friedman, sundance tv

Jena Friedman is doing the work of whatever higher power you believe in with her brand new SundanceTV true crime comedy series, Indefensible. She is not only succinctly and very sharply going in as investigative journalist revisiting horrifically botched murder cases, but sticking some satiric truth to some of the faces responsible for justice not being served to known and convicted killers.

A la her work on Soft Focus, Jena is so deft in her back-and-forth with many of the lawyers and experts that she interviews, they’re left in a pocket of absurdity that’s so funny, yet so representative of how the American legal system currently functions.

Take a gander at how Jena follows the strangeness of this interview with a defense attorney in a particularly heinous murder case in regards to sexual habits of middle aged men here in this exclusive clip.

Then, make sure you mark your calendars (or cork board full of red string) for Thurs. Oct. 14th at 11PM on Sundance TV for the series premiere of Indefensible.

Two long years ago, Jena Friedman had an amazing set on Conan that all focused on women’s obsession with true crime and, thusly, making for some of the best jokes about society’s lust for true crime that have been told in recent memory.

Two Soft Focus specials on Adult Swim later (that had Friedman interview the “Cannibal Cop” and the late John McAfee), Jena has her very own true crime centric project called Indefensible that looks deeper into the stories of those convicted for murder and having some of the sharpest, darkest jokes woven so deftly throughout.

See for yourself what Jena has cooked up in this promo here, then look for the premiere of Indefensible with Jena Friedman on SundanceTV on Thurs. Oct. 14th at 11PM.

Jena Friedman’s Latest Show “Indefensible” to Premiere on 10/14

August 20, 2021
News
comedy, indefensible, jena friedman, true crime

The latest intersection of true crime and comedy (you know that there are several, especially when it comes to podcasts, right?) is coming up in just under two months from the one and only Jena Friedman.

Coming off fresh from being nominated for an Oscar for writing on Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm (on top of being a true crime junkie herself), Friedman is going to take an even more unflinching dive into true crime stories that dig deeper than someone getting convicted for a heinous crime and then getting put behind bars in this brand new series, Indefensible. Though she has interviewed plenty of controversial figures including “the Cannibal Cop” and a heavily guarded and armed John McAfee, Friedman says this is even more intense.

One can only wonder what that could really mean when Jena had The Cannibal Cop be the mystery bachelor on a twisted version of the dating game or how dark she gets in this late night set that’s purely on true crime.

We cannot wait to see what Jena has up her sleeve this time. Look for the premiere of Indefensible on Sundance TV and streaming on AMC Plus on Oct. 14th at 8PM PT/11PM ET.

I have a show airing on @SundanceTV @AMCPlus Oct 14 at 11 pm ET called “Indefensible.” It’s about the criminal justice system and it’s a little more intense than my other stuff. We’re still in the edit & so many great people are working on it. I hope you get a chance to see it.

While Jena Friedman is going to be on Stephen Colbert’s Election Night special on Showtime that you’ll be able to check out later this evening (provided that you’re not cutting yourself off from all media to stay sane for the next couple of days), you can and should watch her very own exclusive, Election Day 2020 web series that you could almost think of as a handful of splendid segments on one of her Adult Swim Soft Focus specials.

She posted all four episodes early this morning and they don’t disappoint as they feature Jena drunkenly calling her local reps, checking in with the deranged former cybersecurity mogul John McAfee, and cameo appearances from her irresistible pooch, Potato.

As we head into the part of Election Day that people are going to hone in on returns (even through the unprecedented amount of mail-in ballots will postpone final results for awhile), please get some catharsis and joy from Jena here.

Team Coco’s exclusive series, The Set Up, that gives a never-before-seen in-depth look into what goes into putting a late night stand-up set has its latest episode featuring one of our all time favorites and a comedian particularly mastered at dark comedy, Jena Friedman.

Friedman and Conan booker J.P. Buck go over a marvelous set Jena had on Conan years back where she specifically focused on the topic of America’s obsession with true crime. Per usual with Jena, she attacked the premise at all angles and planted punchlines at every twist and turn, while continuing to nail the topic the whole time (a rarity in late night sets). Jena details the amount of work, even up to the last second, and risks she took for the set, which hopefully makes you appreciate how effortless it all seems when it was taped on Conan.

Please Enjoy Jena Friedman’s Darkly Funny Cooking Show “The Joy of Quarantine”

cooking show, jena friedman, joy of quarantine

During quarantine, many comedians have turned to doing their own impromptu cooking shows like Amy Schumer and Iliza Shlesinger, often with help from partners that are actual chefs, or even the bolder Syd Can Cook with Sydnee Washington where she only gets helps from other comedians over Instagram Live.

We’d like to point you to a cooking show with Jena Friedman called The Joy of Quarantine that was shot at the beginning of lockdown. Friedman isn’t a professional chef like in a similar fashion to these other comedian driven cooking shows, but Friedman’s dark sense of humor weaves its way throughout unlike we’ve seen in, well, any cooking show really (who else names a chicken Hitler before gutting it?). Also unique to Friedman’s cooking series is the fact that her boyfriend refuses to have his face shown on camera and she is only using recipes that have Ashkenazi Jewish origins, often doing so for the first time.

It’s our flavor of cooking show as the existential dread is so present in our lives after four months in quarantine.

So, with all of that said, please enjoy Jena’s The Joy of Quarantine here.

Before everything got locked down, there was a good deal of stand-up done in the way where it used to be done without social distancing, going out, etc. One of those collections of stand-up that was recently released, Taking the Stage, comes from Comedy Central x Refinery 29 and just so happens to feature one of our all time favorites, Jena Friedman.

Jena Friedman has always managed to find comedy right in and around the edge. Impeccable writing, pinpoint delivery, and an unflappable sense of composure have served her dark sense of humor very well. While this set does revel in dark, prescient humor, it’s intriguing to see and hear it right now when, comparatively, it seems somewhat less dark.

In any case, Jena delivered a splendid set. Please enjoy her it here.

Jena Friedman Hits the Mark on America’s True Crime Obsession on Conan

That always-bandied-about thrill that stand-up comedy supposedly can provide by bringing light to the dark topics, even when it acts like a bit of twisted fun house mirror that you’re looking into is very hard to achieve (making it all the more magical when a comedian does so while also being, of course, very funny).

When it comes to the subject of “pushing boundaries” and “taking risks” in the art form of stand up comedy, one should look to Jena Friedman to see how that can be pulled off.

It’s kind of her thing.

We’d even go so far as to say that Jena’s stand-up, always unafraid to sneak into dark territories, showcases, very clearly, how artful stand-up can be.

Just see for yourself in Jena Friedman’s latest set all about the American obsession with true crime on Conan.

Count the New “Soft Focus with Jena Friedman” as The First Great Comedy Special of 2019

Jena Friedman already dazzled us with the daring, nail-bitingly hilarious first Soft Focus special at Adult Swim that, amongst many wonderful things it pulled off, found a way to make the man nicknamed the Cannibal Cop uncomfortable.

This next Soft Focus special ups the ante and expertly and satirically covers sexual harassment in gaming and interviews one of the more controversial figures of our time, former security software entrepreneur John McAfee about his new 2020 presidential campaign (Note: he did have a failed 2016 presidential bid).

We don’t want to give anything away really as Friedman’s uber-clever style of twisting-the-comedic-knife in these situations deserves a full surprise. We will say that Jena has quite the knack for subtly letting her subjects not only have enough rope to hang themselves, but make sure that the knot that they hang themselves is just right and so damn funny the whole way though. Honestly, we enjoyed this more than Who Is America.

We sincerely hope leads to a full-fledged series or feature length project or just something that allows Jena to make more things like this as she has for so many years.

So, this new Soft Focus with Jena Friedman premieres tonight at midnight on Adult Swim and you should absolutely make plans to watch it.

Jena Friedman made such a fantastic investigative/topical comedy special with Soft Focus that, if we’re to go by the title of the video, Adult Swim opted to give her a sequel(?) with Soft Focus with Jena Friedman 2.

The first go around had Jena really digging into the issue of campus rape and such a darkly funny and subversive way as well as interviewing Gilberto Valle, the man once labeled as the Cannibal Cop, then putting him through a surprise dating game show.

What lies in store for this next one is a bit of mystery, but this teaser sure feels like it’s upping the ante.

Look for the next Soft Focus with Jena Friedman on Friday January 25th at midnight.

You Can Now Watch “Soft Focus with Jena Friedman” at AdultSwim.com and Marvel at Jena’s Viciously Funny Satirical Special

There are great echoes of the field pieces of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in this special, which shouldn’t come as a surprise as Jena used to produce said field pieces there.

What is amazing about Soft Focus is how Jena is so calm in her delivery the entire time (as if she has ice running through her veins), maximizing the awkwardness and absurdity of the interviews she set up. From that calmness, there comes an almost tangible, metaphorical twisting-of-the-knife in her conversations with real folks (that might need a bit of a metaphorical knife twisting to be honest). No matter how dark it gets, we still find ourselves laughing heartily.

So, please watch Soft Focus with Jena Friedman, which, we hope, will become a show itself very soon.
