Pick of the Day: Uh Huh (in LA) 4/23

April 19, 2024
News
christina catherine martinez, experimental comedy, los angeles comedy, milan patel, paul danke, stand up comedy, todd glass, veronica osorio

What goes into the magic that makes the live experience of a Comedy Bang! Bang!, Hot Tub with Kurt & Kristen, The Meltdown with Jonah & Kumail that brought hundreds upon hundreds of comedy lovers together every week? Well, honestly, there isn’t enough time or inches in this post to get into the finer points of that, but rest assured that the magic sauce behind each sauce is different and is part and parcel of the times they happened in.

With that in mind, a trio of Paul Danke, Christina Catherine Martinez, and Jake Kroeger are looking to capture that verve with Uh Huh. A tight, but free in spirit (mostly) stand-up show that gives you the unequivocal best of the LA comedy scene (and TCB’s Jake Kroeger and the beloved Danke and Martinez are the three best folks to give it to you).

This very first Uh Huh (hopefully with more to come) is set for Tues. Apr. 23rd at 7:30PM with a grand line-up of Todd Glass, Curtis Cook, Milan Patel, and Veronica Osorio. Tickets are $15 right now if you want to get in on the ground floor of something special. Go get tix here.

Pick of the Day: Christina Catherine Martinez (in NYC) 9/24

August 14, 2023
News
christina catherine martinez, experimental comedy, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

Unflinching in her quest to distill the most nuanced of ideologies into abject tomfoolery, Christina Catherine Martinez is taking her preposterously sublime comedy across the country again, all the way to NYC. We here in Southern California are blessed to see the critically acclaimed comedian in all sorts places high and low, from the esteemed REDCAT all the way to an out-of-the-way dive bar.

Martinez will be taking over one of Brooklyn’s beloved comedy establishments, Littlefield, next month to do, well, whatever she wants (which might include some intellectual dissection of Taco Bell and/or unbridled satirization of the gender binary). The brilliant River Ramirez will be joining Christina for this special evening of the highest and lowest brow comedy together.

Christina is set to play Littlefield on Sun. Sept. 24th at 8PM. Tickets are only $15.54 and we highly suggest you get them here.

Pick of the Day: Christina Catherine Martinez Presents: Stephanie Presents: Tala Madani (in LA) 2/18

February 13, 2023
News
art exhibition, christina catherine martinez, los angeles comedy, moca, tala madani

For a very big stretch of our tenure as The Comedy Bureau, we’ve always dreamt (and thusly attempt to manifest) comedians giving a tour of an art museum or an art exhibition. There have been hints of such things over the years (B.J. Novak snuck his own version of an audio tour into an art museum way before The Office), but we feel that there is such a great intersection of the art and comedy worlds that could create something really magical with a bit more traffic (i.e. comedy could take itself a little more seriously and art could be sillier and more self-effacing)

Leave it to art critic and comedian Christina Catherine Martinez to do something brilliant yet again and set herself to do a tour of an actual art exhibition at MOCA as a character. Hence, this weekend, there will be Christina Catherine Martinez presents: Stephanie presents: Tala Madini. Christina will be donning an alter-ego of mononym art publicist Stephanie diving into the very real and profound work of Tala Madani in its closing week at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in DTLA.

There’s no Super Bowl, awards shows, or whatever else this weekend, so make plans to go to this on Sat. Feb. 18th at 4PM, especially since admission is free.

Pick of the Day: Stamptown (in LA) 11/30

November 3, 2022
News
bonavega, catherine cohen, chad damiani, christina catherine martinez, Dylan Adler, los angeles comedy, Mae Martin, natalie palamides, stamptown, zach zucker

Returning victoriously from Europe, Zach Zucker and Stamptown his traveling, rotating circus of clowns, stand-ups, characters, out there musical acts, and more is coming around to LA once more. The last time Stamptown was in town was six months ago back when Netflix Is a Joke Fest finally happened, which, honestly feels like two years ago at this point.

Per usual, Zucker has gone above and beyond to stack the line-up with the most daring and illuminating acts in town, which will include (so far for this 11/30 edition):

Mae Martin
Catherine Cohen
Natalie Palamides
Dylan Adler
Bonavega
Chad Damiani
Christina Catherine Martinez

It’s at the nice and big and raucous Bourbon Room in the heart of Hollywood on Hollywood Blvd. (perhaps one of the only reasons to go there?) and tickets are only $20 right now. Go get ’em while you still can here.

Pick of the Day: Aesthetical Relations with Christina Catherine Martinez (in LA) 11/11

September 21, 2022
News
christina catherine martinez, dtla, los angeles comedy, performance art, talk show

It’s not often that you get to live comedy at one of LA’s premier theaters for live performance, REDCAT. Then again, dynamic and innovative comedians of the likes of Christina Catherine Martinez are similarly a rare breed.

That’s why Christina’s postmodernist shake-up of the tried and true variety talk show, Aesthetical Relations, is coming to REDCAT this November, giving her the stage she deserves after wowing audiences with her joyfully riotous blend of stand-up, clowning, and art criticism in and around and beyond LA to great acclaim for years now.

Fri. Nov. 11th ought to be a very special night, especially around 8:30PM when this edition of Aesthetical Relations comes to pass. So, with that in mind, go get your tickets, on sale now for $25, right here ASAP.

Pick of the Day: The Green Room with Paul Provenza (Nowhere Comedy Live-stream) 7/23

July 11, 2022
News
ben gleib, christina catherine martinez, green room with paul provenza, jamie kilstein, kira soltanovich, nowhere comedy, virtual comedy

It has been far too long since The Green Room with Paul Provenza has been on the air. A groundbreaking series on Showtime that showed comedy panel shows can work in America so long as it’s more of an open, unstructured conversation not unlike that between comedians in a typical comedy club green room.

Thankfully, Paul Provenza (director of The Aristocrats, author of ¡SATIRISTAS!, producer of Set List: Standup Without A Net) has transformed his backyard into the perfect place to have a live version of The Green Room (and has brought us at The Comedy Bureau on board) to bring back those one-of-a-kind conversations between all sorts of great comedians from all backgrounds, generations, and ideologies, etc. You’ll be able to watch this particular version of The Green Room with Paul Provenza virtually via Nowhere Comedy, as it will eb done in front of a live audience in Paul’s own charming compound.

Going live on Sat. Jul. 23rd at 7:30PM PT/10:30PM ET with Christina Catherine Martinez, Kira Soltanovich, Jamie Kilstein, and Ben Gleib, as well as, of course, Paul Provenza, there will be stand-up and then the signature panel conversation between all the comics. Tickets are $10 right now, but you can snag VIP tickets where you can ask the panel a question for $30. Go get them here and revel in and enjoy the return of the one and only Green Room.

Pick of the Day: Christina Catherine Martinez-How to Bake a Cake in the Digital Age (in LA) 3/28

March 25, 2022
News
christina catherine martinez, comedy special, free screening, how to bake a cake in the digital age, human resources la, los angeles comedy

The artifice of a stage, mic stand, microphone and a bunch of negative space as to exude the solitary nature of a stand-up will always be core to the idea of a stand-up special. That said, there’s still room to push and redefine and reimagine what a  person telling jokes for an hour or so can be or could look like, despite many folks insistence on going with the tried and true method that has seen stand-up comedy through several decades.

Christina Catherine Martinez‘s very first half-hour special How To Bake a Cake in the Digital Age is such a big swing of experimentation in form and content that is also so damn, absurdly funny that it really needs to be recognized as one of the specials of 2022, hopefully to be talked about in years to come. Against the odds of already making an original comedy special and the odds of doing any sort of creative work for public consumption during the pandemic, Christina was granted the space of Human Resources LA to make a pandemic era comedy special and cleverly devised a way to make it something that, we believe, is funny beyond the context of the onslaught of COVID.

There will be a very special screening of How To Bake a Cake in the Digital Age at the very place it was created, Human Resources LA, on Mon. Mar. 28th at 9PM PT. Admission is free and you really ought to take Christina and HRLA up on that if you’re in or around LA, even if you have to cancel Monday night plans you already had.

Pick of the Day: Stand up and Clown (in LA) 2/7

January 28, 2022
News
ahamed weinberg, anna seregina, babs gray, christina catherine martinez, clown, elysian theater, ify nwadiwe, jessy morner ritt, kyle mizono, los angeles comedy, morgan jay, stand up comedy

It is our firm belief that when the different disciplines of comedy get cross-pollinated that some of the best, most boundary pushing comedy gets made. We also believe that Chad Damiani “live directing” (or ruthlessly roasting) people attempting clown is some of the funniest things we’ve ever seen.

Stand Up and Clown will combine all of that comedy goodness into a crucible of glorious failure and celebratory stupidity. Basically, Damiani, a veteran of the clowning and improv world will do his “live directing” of great stand-up comedians trying their hand at clown.

This first edition has a bunch of wondrous LA comedians that we can’t wait to see under Chad’s gun including:

  • Babs Gray
  • Morgan Jay
  • Christina Catherine Martinez
  • Kyle Mizono
  • Jessy Morner-Ritt
  • Ify Nwadiwe
  • Anna Seregina
  • Ahamed Weinberg

This inaugural Stand Up and Clown will happen at The Elysian on Mon. Feb. 7th at 9:30PM PT. Tickets are $12 right now and you really ought to get your tickets ASAP here.

Pick of the Day: Clown Zoo (in LA) 1/12 (@ Old LA Zoo) 1/29 (@ Elysian)

January 6, 2022
News
bill o'neill, chad damiani, christina catherine martinez, clown zoo, clowning, Corey Podell, courtney pauroso, elysian, Ian Braschie, jim venable, juzo yoshida, los angeles comedy, max baumgarten, natalie palamides

This first week of 2022 has been greeted with daily cancellations and postponements of all things of all shapes and sizes. So, we’re doing our darnedest to find what to look forward to in the coming weeks (that hopefully doesn’t get canceled or postponed either).

Clown Zoo, the outdoor comedy juggernaut (made our 100 best list again), faithfully served the LA area on Wednesday afternoons to provide one of the most fun, ridiculous live shows of this whole pandemic. The abandon and chaos with which they do an outdoor, traditional mask show is one of the surefire comedy bets we can always count on. They (and by they, we mean Natalie Palamides, Courtney Pauroso, Corey Podell, Chad Damiani, Christina Catherine Martinez, Max Baumgarten, Ian Bratschie, Juzo Yoshida, Bill O’Neill, and musical accompaniment by Jim Venable) are making a triumphant return for 2022 this month!

On Wed. Jan. 12th at their coveted time of 12:30PM PT, Clown Zoo will reconvene for their standing weekly show at the Old LA Zoo in Griffith Park (still outdoors and still socially distanced) and, as a new and thrilling entry in 2022, the Clown Zoo bunch will be going indoors at The Elysian for a monthly show starting Sat. Jan. 29th at 8PM PT (proof of vaccination and masks required).

The Wednesday show is still FREE, but you can (and very, very much should) snag your tickets for Clown Zoo Presents for $20 right here right now before they very likely sell out.

Pick of the Day: What’s Your Problem, Sir? Fund Texas Choice Benefit (in LA) 12/12

December 3, 2021
News
christina catherine martinez, comedy fundraiser, ever mainard, fund texas choice, lindsay adams, what's your problem sir

The real, live, in-person debut of What’s Your Problem, Sir? with Ever Mainard was supposed to happen this Summer, but chaos during this pandemic prevailed and it was forced to postpone.

Now, comedy is back enough for Ever to grace us for a non-virtual edition of What’s Your Problem, Sir? next Sunday with her special brand of genuine, ephemeral, enthralling riffing and crowd work just in time for the holiday season. It ought to be extra special being at the new jewel of the LA comedy scene, The Elysian and being joined by the comedy stylings and honesty of Christina Catherine Martinez and Lindsay Adams.

ALSO, with the state of the nation, particularly in Texas, Ever has opted to give 100% of profits of this show to Fund Texas Choice, an org dedicated to giving Texans fair and equitable access to abortion.

So, do not miss out on this very, very special, first in-person edition of What’s Your Problem, Sir? with Ever Mainard on Sun. Dec. 12th at 8:30PM PT. Tickets are $15 and proof of vaccination and masks are required. Go get ’em now.

Pick of the Day: Clown Zoo (Wednesdays in LA)

May 25, 2021
News
bill o'neill, chad damiani, charlie barnett, christina catherine martinez, clown, clown zoo, Corey Podell, ian bratschie, juzo yoshida, max baumgarten, natalie palamides

As we’re carefully getting back into listing in-person shows, we’d like to one of personal favorites that’s a true gem and as distanced and outdoors as it possibly can get.

Clown Zoo, featuring many of LA’s finest clown/idiot performers, happens in one of the former exhibits of the Old LA Zoo nestled in Griffith Park. The likes of Chad Damiani, Natalie Palamides, Christina Catherine Martinez, Max Baumgarten, Courtney Pauroso, Juzo Yoshida, Corey Podell, Bill O’Neill, Ian Bratschie, and Charlie Barnett put on a “mask show” where they don masks and act out/improvise what is very likely, one of the most delightfully ridiculous things you’ll have seen in a long time. Oh, and it’s usually brilliantly live scored as well.

Join in on the rambunctious fun every Wednesday at 12:30PM PT at the Old Zoo in Griffith Park (4801 Griffith Park Dr., Los Angeles, CA 90027).

Pick of the Day: Border Aid (Humanitarian/Legal Aid Benefit) 3/20

March 19, 2021
News
al otro lado, aparna nancherla, atsuko okatsuka, border aid, chris estrada, christina catherine martinez, opey olagbaju

The issue immigration is yet another pre-pandemic problem (that never really went away) that’s creeping back into the news cycle as things rush to reopen in America. All the organizations that give humanitarian and legal aid to immigrants that are facing separation from their families and deportation due to broken immigration policies are also still alive and well and, coupled with that, are the comedy benefit shows that support said orgs.

This Sat. Mar. 20th at 6:30PM PT/9:30PM ET, Border Aid will be one such fantastic live-stream comedy show that will be raising money for Al Otro Lado and all the crucial work their do for immigrants and the undocumented. The line-up is filled with comedy’s finest to offer their comedy wares in support and solidarity.

That includes: Aparna Nancherla, Chris Estrada, Atsuko Okatsuka, Christina Catherine Martinez, and Opey Olagbaju. Maddie Connors graciously hosts.

Donations are being accepted for Al Otro Lado here, and details and access to the live-stream can be found here. Do some good and enjoy some really, really good comedy this weekend.

Pick of the Day: Hot Tub with Kurt & Kristen 16th Anniversary 2/22

February 19, 2021
News
beth stelling, christina catherine martinez, hot Tub, jackie kashian, kyle kinane, langston kerman, wyatt cenac

Even without a pandemic, the idea of a weekly comedy show, especially a stalwartly funny one, going for 16 years is astounding. Hot Tub with Kurt & Kristen has been one of the best shows hands down wherever it has been (including NYC, LA, and festivals all around).

Kurt Braunohler and Kristen Schaal and their crew, currently CleftClips & HoldThePhone Comedy, have built a comedy institution over those several years, which was where we spent the majority of our Monday nights before lockdown. To keep going during the pandemic as one of the best, yet again, most reliable comedy live-streams deserves a standing ovation no matter where you are or what you’re doing currently.

To mark the occasion, they’ll be doing the show in their virtual Hot Tub: Home Edition format LIVE at HOLDTHEPHONE.TV with a brimming and bustling line-up of their personal favorites including Wyatt Cenac, Kyle Kinane, Jackie Kashian, Langston Kerman, Beth Stelling, and Christina Catherine Martinez.

You can stream it for free on Feb. 22nd at 8PM PT/11PM ET, as you’ve always been able to do during lockdown, or, you can support them and the comics and their home at The Virgil in LA by joining the Hot Tub Club at Patreon where you could be part of a limited live Zoom audience. We say do it if you haven’t already, especially for their 16th anniversary.

Pick of the Day: Valentine’s with Yassir 2/12

News
adam pally, al corado, atsuko okatsuka, blair socci, chelsea devantez, chris garcia, christina catherine martinez, garrick bernard, jon gabrus, madison shepard, paul scheer, yassir lester

Believe it or not, there are actually a lot of great choices for comedy live-streams for this Valentine’s Day weekend. Even though that’s the case, one of the best line-ups just also happens to be a fundraiser for a crucial LA City Council.

Truly progressive candidate Al Corado is running to unseat District 13 incumbent Mitch O’Farrell on a platform of defunding the police, housing all unhoused people in Los Angeles, and in a Green New Deal. To raise money for his campaign, the hysterical and one of the all-time-best on Twitter Yassir Lester will be leading of a stellar line-up of:

Blair Socci
Atsuko Okatsuka
Adam Pally
Paul Scheer
Jon Gabrus
Garrick Bernard
Madison Shepard
Chris Garcia
Christina Catherine Martinez
Chelsea Devantez

See how stacked that is? If you’re going in on one comedy live-stream this weekend, this should be one of your top choices if not your top choices.

Valentine’s with Yassir is set for Fri. Feb. 12th at 8PM PT/11PM ET. Tickets start at $5 and go up to $500+. Go get tickets here.

At this, in-person human interaction/connection is a very precious resource. Much of the country is about to impose or already has imposed stricter lockdown measures as COVID-19 cases have been spiking up again and travel and gathering for Thanksgiving is being highly discouraged.

Joshua Turek taps into this very notion with this wonderful new sketch, “Tennis & Abandoment”. It shows what happens when even an ounce of carelessness comes into the equation of physically meeting up with another person these days and how even a friendly morning round of tennis is to be cherished and absolutely not wasted.

Oh, you’ll notice that Christina Catherine Martinez delivers an inspired performance and continuing to blaze her trail in serving up marvelous comedy during the global pandemic.

There is so much in this world that needs saving right now, especially if it was something that needed to be saved before COVID-19 took hold of the world. The Santé D’Or Foundation in Los Angeles does so much as a volunteer run animal adoption agency and often does comedy benefit shows to support their efforts.

With the presence of the pandemic, rescue animals needing to find a home is more crucial than ever as space and staff to take care of them is extremely limited.  So, they are still doing a benefit show, Comedy for Kittens Cat-astrophe Fund Show, but doing so virtually with the lovely aid of Dynasty Typewriter.

Thurs. Aug. 27th at 6PM PT/9PM ET, a line-up of NIKKI GLASER (Netflix),  KURT BRAUNOHLER (The Big Sick), PAIGE WELDON (Late Late Show with James Corden), CHRISTINA CATHERINE MARTINEZ(FX’s Cake) , and KEVIN TIT(Hard Times) wash over you, and revel in the musical reprieves by COLLEEN GREEN and ZACH CARPER (FIDLAR) will join host JARED LOGAN (Best Week Ever) for this special evening in support of Santé D’Or.

Tickets are $5-$20 and you can (and should) go get them here (live-stream link will be sent after purchase).

Pick of the Day: Aesthetical Relations 8/6

News
aesthetical relations, angelo castoria, art + comedy, christina catherine martinez, courtney pauroso, experimental comedy, jamel johnson, talk show

We were truly taken by Christina Catherine Martinez’s first foray into the IG Live space with her comedy/art talk/experimental comedy show Aesthetical Relations. We’re still taken by the audacity of the opening, which has us still ruminating on its audacity and how she cleverly pushed the boundaries of the aesthetics of the Gram (in addition to have all sorts of weird and wonderful treats with offbeat characters, high art/literary folks, and niche, but thoroughly satisfying bits).

So, we wouldn’t dare let ourselves go without specifically telling you about the very next Aesthetical Relations that Christina would be exhibiting, which just happens to be this Thursday, Aug. 6th at 7PM PT/10PM ET over @xtina_catherine on Instagram. Very, very special guests include the hysterical Jamel Johnson (who possibly made the first legit comedy special in quarantine), Dr. Angelo Castoria, and clowning/character sensation Courtney Pauroso.

Until that time, please enjoy Christina’s personal announcement for this edition of Aesthetical Relations.

Leave it to Christina Catherine Martinez, comedian, author, and professional art critic, to take the incredibly limiting medium of Instagram Live and turn into something wild, whimsical, dangerous, funny, and genuinely illuminating (like she tends to do with her comedy when done live in person).

Martinez did the first virtual edition of her normally recurring art comedy talk show Aesthetical Relations (with guests Kat Toledo, Jamie Loftus, and Angella d’Avignon) made something truly special. In fact, we may go so far as to say that it might have one of the best openings (there’s an unmistakable indie/cinematic feel to it) to an IG Live show that we’ve ever seen.

So, without any more delay, please enjoy this first virtual edition of Aesthetical Relations here (pt. 1) and here (pt. 2)
