TCB Debriefing 12/5/23: Norman Lear, Kyle Ayers, Last Week Tonight, Jesse David Fox, Jackie Fabulous, Taskmasters

December 6, 2023
News
brendon walsh, brian keith etheridge, jackie fabulous, jesse david fox, john oliver, johnny ryan, kyle ayers, last week tonight, norman lear, taskmasters

1. R.I.P. Norman Lear. Rather than write a whole screed about how much of a legend to comedy, television, and representation he is, we’ll just say that he’s much more deserving of The Mark Twain Prize for Humor, an award that’s supposed to honor people in comedy who have effectively changed the dialogue that Americans have with each other, than the majority of the recipients. Yes, he was not a performer, but the landscape of comedy and American sitcoms are wholly influenced by Lear.

2. Kyle Ayers is brilliant and hilarious and also suffers from Trigeminal Neuraligia AKA “Suicide Disease”. Ayers deserves all the support we can muster, especially because calling the American Health Care system a joke is being nice. Please support his GoFundMe here.

3. In the biggest no brainer ever, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is renewed for three seasons through 2026.

4. Vulture/Good One’s Jesse David Fox explains explaining comedy on Seth Meyers, despite some folks thinking that comedians are just making it all on up the spot and not hard working artisans. Please watch and enjoy here. Also, go get his book Comedy Book-How Comedy Conquered Culture-and the Magic That Makes It Work for further explanation of how exactly comedians do the magic that they do.

5. The amazing, effervescent Jackie Fabulous is going on tour. Please go get tix at jackiefabulous.com.

6. Brendon Walsh and Brian Keith Etheridge (South Park) and Johnny Ryan have an animated series, Taskmasters, that incorporates prank calls that just got a script commitment at Fox (Deadline). Fingers crossed that this turns into a green light as Walsh is the living king of prank calls.

7. We’ll leave you with this: Tickets to a cool comedy show count as a great holiday gift.

TCB Debriefing 10/5/23: Roy Wood Jr., Pamela Adlon Feature, Cate Blanchett/Guy Maddin, Afternoon Delight with Brendon Walsh, Dicks the Musical, Sort Of, Junior High

October 5, 2023
News
brendon walsh, cate blanchett, crank calls, dicks the musical, guy maddin, junior high, pamela adlon, roy wood jr, sort of

1. Roy Wood Jr. is tired of waiting and has opted to leave The Daily Show unless he’s given the role of host (THR). Comedy Central ought to know that using the WGA strike as an excuse for the delay of making a decision is only going to be valid for a little longer.

2. If you’ve been missing Better Things since the series finale, rejoice in the directorial debut of Pamela Adlon, Babes, starring Hasan Minhaj and Ilana Glazer is going to get a release via Neon (Variety). Fingers crossed that we wont’ have to wait through too much of 2024 to see it in theaters.

3. Enigmatic, but renowned Canadian director Guy Maddin and living and working legend Cate Blanchett are about to start shooting Maddin’s latest, a dramedy called Rumors (THR). If it’s even half as trippy as My Winnipeg, this will probably flip your world every which way possible several times over.

4. Long live crank calls and all hail to Brendon Walsh for keeping them alive with his live show Afternoon Delight. Walsh just started bringing back his show in LA and now has a handful of dates booked in CA. Go get tickets ASAP at afternoondelightshow.com.

A post shared by Brendon Walsh (@bholewalsh)

5. Just a friendly reminder, that Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson’s raucous Dicks the Musical begins its theatrical run this weekend and we’re betting that it’s going to be every bit the required viewing that Barbie and Oppenheimer were/still are.

6. Bilal Baig‘s touching and illuminating dramedy, Sort Of, will see its end with this upcoming third season (Deadline). Part of SAG AFTRA’s new contract should prohibit Warner Discovery from cancelling stuff for a few months at least?

7. The wondrous, all inclusive performance space, Junior High, is hiring event staffers. Just a heads up in case if you’re looking for work that isn’t being a waiter or bartender right now.

A post shared by Junior High (@juniorhighla)

8. We’ll leave you with this: It’s our founders b-day today and if you’d like to support TCB (he’s the one running the whole show), some love via Venmo @jakekroeger, would be greatly appreciated.

Pick of the Day: Afternoon Delight with Brendon Walsh (in LA) 6/11

June 6, 2023
News
afternoon delight, brendon walsh, los angeles comedy, prank calls

Prank calls are kind of relic of comedy’s past (caller ID makes it a lot harder), but, for any of you that have done it or watched/listened to other comedy folks do it, you very well know that it can be a thrilling bit of chaotic fun (especially if “professionals” do it).

Well, very few folks crank a call quite like comedian/podcaster/prankster extraordinaire, Brendon Walsh. He was actually putting his skills on display by prank calling in front of a live audience with guests comedians, some of whom would actually be the target of the prank, with his live, in-person Afternoon Delight show. COVID-19 put that on pause for a very long time, but thankfully that wait for the next edition is coming to an end.

On Sun. Jun. 11th at the perfect time of 4:20PM, Brendon will take over The High Low in Los Feliz to do the latest Afternoon Delight, mixing stand-up and prank calls with very special guests Johnny Pemberton and Melissa Villaseñor. It’ll be the wildest afternoon you’ve probably had in awhile and we highly suggest you snag your $5 tickets right now right here.

It has been a minute (well, it has been quite a few figurative minutes) since legendary garage comedy trio of Paul Danke, Cornell Reid, and Sean Green as The Comedy Garage (there’s a whole doc about it) have assembled to put on around great round of underground comedy.

Lucky for all of us, they’ll be coming back together again this Friday with a classic line-up and putting on a show that’s legitimately underground. Get more details here.

If you want to see how daft comedy can truly get (in the best way possible of course, done by very talented, clever folks), you might want to catch Brendon Small and Brendon Walsh’s BREN2ON (pronounced BREN-TU-DIN) at the end of this month (Tuesday, May 29th at 8PM) at Lyric Hyperion Theatre & Cafe.

Brendon and Brendon really push the limits of how silly and dumb they can get (i.e. prank calls, DIY crafts, etc.) and, in a unique way, it’s brilliant. Also, the amazing Morgan Murphy, Henry Phillips, and Jamie Loftus will be joining them as well.

Tickets are $5 and you can (and really should) get them here.

Normally, a show like this would be in the walls of some hallowed indie music venue a la Neil Hamburger and Special Guests at The Satellite. However, next week, this wondrous line-up will brings some delightful mischief to the Gelson’s in Silver Lake.

Also, the show is free to attend. Get more details here.

Neil Hamburger, America’s Funnyman, has been greasing his hair, coughing, holding too many cocktails, and roasting music for 10 years at The Satellite.

Come celebrate the decade of Neil’s residency at the end of the month with a line-up that’s already stacked and will undoubtedly get more stacked.

Get your tickets ASAP as we’re sure this show will sell out rather quickly.

Comedy Central Developing ‘Weird Uncles’ Starring Brendon Walsh & Randy Liedtke

While the branding of ‘uncles’ hasn’t been great over the last several years, a sitcom starring professional goofballs Brendon Walsh and Randy Liedtke will, at the very least, do a lot for fun uncles around the world (if this goes to series).

Seriously, Brendon and Randy do some damn silly stuff on stage, on television, and elsewhere and we’re excited that they very well could get top billing on their own show playing uncles.

Joining them will be a fantastic line-up of Wendy Liebman, Brendon Walsh, Christina Catherine Martinez, and Andy Haynes.

Watch Randy Liedtke, Brendon Walsh, and Johnny Pemberton as Brain Surgeons Trying to One Up Each Other

The mischief abounds when comedians Randy Liedtke, Brendon Walsh, and Johnny Pemberton are in the same room together. Just listen to The Bone Zone if you have any doubts about that.

Even if you put O.R. scrubs and put them in a hospital lounge, they’ll find a way to get really, unabashedly silly.

Just watch this.

On last night’s Late Late Show with guest host Drew Carey, Brendon Walsh got to do a set where he told the story of getting a DUI test when he used to live in Texas.

Ideally, if you ever get a sobriety test, you wouldn’t be doing what Walsh was doing at the time.

1) In an ongoing confusion about the upcoming Comedy Awards, what exactly is “breakthrough” about any of the nominees for Breakthrough Performer of the Year?  Most of these people have been around comedy for quite some time and are somewhat established, but the only thing that I can figure in regards to being breakthrough is that they have something, a TV show mostly, that’s really popular this year, as opposed to someone just having a whole round of debuts on the late night circuit as a comic whose name is just started to get known around entertainment and comedy circles alike.  To be accurate, the award should be called Biggest Jump by a Comedic Performer in IMDB Starmeter This Year.

2) A big change is coming to the Big Trouble in Little Tokyo Open Mic as we’re now only featuring one special guest and this Tuesday, it’s going to be a great one as we’re having Brendon Walsh come down right before he goes on the Spring Value Tour with Neil Hamburger and Todd Barry.

3) ON THE HORIZON: Jimmy Dore’s Pop and Politics @ Meltdown Comics Sat. Apr. 2nd $10

6) I think have come to a point where I can only “nerd out” about comedy because all that I know.  Unfortunately, that’s what I do for “work”, so I think I’ve become that guy who just can’t stop talking about work no matter where he is.  Details on this development to follow.

1) Forget Black Friday-Jimmy Pardo’s “Pardcast-a-Thon” kicks off 6PM TONIGHT for 12 hours straight having all proceeds go to Smile Train benefiting extremely underprivileged children who need cleft palate surgery regain their smile as well as the ability to speak properly, eat, and lead a normal life (not that comedians really know what that’s like).  There will be tons of big guests as well as Jimmy Pardo himself, so tune in for some laughs/charity here.

2) Seriously, forget Black Friday and all those relatives that you’re trying to buy cheap gifts to keep up appearances.  Instead go on a COMEDY CRAWL that’s not even that long with Lettuce Entertain You (w/Stand Up) @ UCB Theatre 8PM $10, Hot Toddy @ iO West 9:30PM (Del Close)/11:30PM (Main Stage) $5.

7) From the “You Should Have Been There” Lagoon: Lenny Bruce-All Alone.

8) The Comedy Bureau is a single man (in every sense of the term) and LIVE TWEETS as an entire agency HERE.

9) You’re saving SOOOOO much money today so you can donate to the Comedy Bureau, right?  Please prove this statement true here.

10) Literally, driving home last night, the freeway was already clogged with traffic for Black Friday. I will, for the first time, feel like I’m having a better time than “real people” at an open mic.
