Please Get and Enjoy Mike Carrozza’s Purely Silly Debut Album “Cherubic”

September 3, 2020
News
blonde medicine, comedy album, mike carrozza, stand up

If reality is too much right now (and we’re betting that it is), you might be seeking something far removed from the present moment, something abjectly silly, absurd (and cheekily self-aware).

If that is indeed the case, you might want to dive into Mike Carrozza‘s debut comedy album Cherubic that has so many delightful twists, turns, tomfoolery, hysterically intentional “long walks” and is, overall, just a genuine stroke of joy (oh, how rarely we use that word these days). This whole album, whether Mike is in the bit or outside of it making fun of how silly a premise is, takes you down so many avenues and it’s a delightful ride all the way through. Truly, you can imagine Carrozza beaming through all his carefully constructed shenanigans that are undeniably fun and it harkens back to a time and place that, well, is just not now. Carrozza hails from Canada and this first hour bodes well for more jubilant comedy coming on  down from up north.

Mike Carrozza’s Cherubic comes out this Fri. Sept. 4th. Pre-order/buy  fresh from Blonde Medicine here.

Please Enjoy Lisa Curry’s Debut Album “Alive For a While”

alive for a while, comedy album, debut, full force records, lisa curry, stand up

In the realm of dark comedy, there is a certain line to observe. It doesn’t necessarily have much to do with how dark you get, but more to do with how forced or artificial a particularly sinister punchline might be. Going dark/blue for dark/blue’s sake, more often than not is not that impressive or, truth be told, all that shocking.

Lisa Curry‘s dark streak in her comedy, however, unmistakably comes from a very genuine place and she has the sharp writing to deliver it perfectly. Her debut album Alive For A While puts Curry’s verve for dark jokes impressively on display. Line after line, Curry paints furiously strokes in the imagery of her own stories and observations, but never loses the tether to her own experience making for cathartically funny bits.

Another layer that makes this debut hour more impressive is that Curry recorded it in London rather than any home club she might have her in the U.S. Going very dark for your first hour overseas is quite the feat and Curry really makes it work.

So,  please get and enjoy Alive For A While, out today, right here.

Please Get and Enjoy Calise Hawkins’ New Album “Calise Hawkins Is 40 AF”

August 13, 2020
News
blonde medicine, calise hawkins, comedy album, stand up

With stand-up comedy, the closer in proximity in time a comedian is to their material, the fresher and more resonant it will undoubtedly be. Calise Hawkins‘ new album Calise Hawkins Is 40 AF really runs with that idea as Calise recorded this new hour on her 40th birthday.

Hawkins stories and observations about being a 40 year old single mother really are celebratory in a way that you rarely hear in comedy. Most comments on being middle aged or older usually lean towards pretty self-deprecating to terribly self-deprecating. Calise has a few slick lines cheekily poking fun at her current moment in her life, but it’s pretty clear that she revels in joy with the present, being 40, and having a 13 year old kid. As a result, Calise’s lust for life is pretty infectious as she even recounts the struggles of her love life in her situation and attempting to raise her teenager while sharing a room with her. The lining up of her 40th birthday and talking about her age and her experience gives a snappy energy on this record that is so charming.

Also, Calise’s bit where she shares her own interpretation of the creation myth is pretty damn fun and subversive too.

Calise Is 40 AF is available from Blonde Medicine wherever you get comedy albums this Friday. You can (and should) pre-order it on iTunes here.

Please Enjoy Adam Cayton-Holland’s New Album “Semblance of Normalcy”

When it comes to the blending the “high” and “low” for comedic effect, there are few that are quite as good at it in all of comedy right now as one Adam Cayton-Holland. In fact, he gets more refined and more delightfully salty with every hour that he puts out.

His latest hour, the brand new album Semblance of Normalcy, showcases his painterly attention to detail with grand, sweeping tales from what starts as normal, everyday minutia. Then, Adam expertly mines the perfect moments, the perfect diction, and the perfect twist to spin one hell of a story whether it be about or birdwatching or drinking a Guinness in Ireland. We definitely found ourselves fully immersed into all the worlds of all of his bits and stories throughout the hour, which was a very welcome break from the current reality.

Adam Cayton Holland’s Semblance of Normalcy is out now from Comedy Central Records and be got or streamed wherever you get your favorite comedy albums.

Tons of Unreleased Joan Rivers Material To Be Released in 2021

July 31, 2020
News
comedy album, joan rivers, posthumous, stand up comedy

(via Variety)

Of all the forces to be reckoned with in comedy, late comedy legend Joan Rivers was one of the most renowned, if not the most renowned. Rivers carved out an empire with her comedy, seemingly with her own will and determination, and kept it going right until she passed away in 2014.

Comedy Dynamics has collected “hundreds of hours of content from the Joan Rivers Estate, with plans to release a box set and digital albums.”

There’s no specific date announced yet and exactly how many hundreds of hours that Comedy Dynamics has or how much of it they’ll plan to release has yet to be determined, but it ought to be a treasure trove of not only following Rivers’ through decades and decades of comedy, but also seeing how comedy itself shifted as reflected through Rivers (someone who adapted as much as she could throughout the entirety of her very, very lengthy career).

In fact, this release might cover more time than any other comedy release in history including the multi-decade, multi-album The Chronicles of Federman. Whenever 2021 comes around, we’ll get to follow the Joan Rivers rabbit hole as deep as it probably goes.

Kyle Kinane’s “Trampoline in a Ditch” Is Another Classic Kinane Album That Comes with Bonus Stories & Animated Shorts

July 23, 2020
News
800 pound gorilla, comedy album, kyle kinane, stand up comedy

Kyle Kinane‘s first comedy album, Death of the Party, came out over 10 years ago and gloriously announced the arrival of Kinane and his grand, painterly style of stand-up that blended observations and stories with both a poetic, salt-of-the-earth grace and a keen eye for the deeply embedded absurdities of life. Every hour since has seen Kinane refine said style while successfully managing to adjust his perspective with his rising success.

This latest album from Kyle, Trampoline in a Ditch, shows that, 11 years later, he is still very much a masterful artisan when it comes to writing and detailing his bits and stories into these ornate, yet unmistakably homespun jokes. Tying the paranormal to white privilege or his subconscious finding a way to subvert the beauty of water fall or even a layered tale of having a DUI are just a small sampling of what is his most sprawling album (probably one of the most sprawling comedy albums in comedy history). In fact, Trampoline in a Ditch runs just over an hour and 40 minutes because, in addition to an hour of stand-up, there are separate stories that haven’t found a home in previous releases from Kyle. Of course, Kinane is one of the best storytellers in comedy and these bonus tracks really make you get your money’s worth for this album.

In addition to all of that, Kinane wanted to bring a new element into the fold for what is effectively a double album. Different bits from Trampoline in a Ditch will be animated in different styles rather than just. seeing more of the Kyle you know and love on stage with a mic and a mic stand. The very first animated bit from CJ Cook is pretty spectacular and follows the opening of the album. Please enjoy it here.

Kyle Kinane: Trampoline in a Ditch comes out Friday, July 24th from 800 Pound Gorilla Records. Please do yourself a favor and pre-save or pre-order it right now.

Andy Kindler Finally Releases a Debut Album “Hence the Humor” (and Of Course It’s Great)

May 8, 2020
News
a special thing, andy kindler, ast records, comedy album, debut album, meta comedy, stand up comedy

Over his multi-decade tenure in comedy, Andy Kindler has become comedy’s own venerable Internal Affairs department. Kindler’s roasts of any and all comedy that has become rote has earned him a permanent slot at JFL Montreal where he pokes fun at every corner of the art and business of comedy that he can with his State of the Industry “address”.

Yet, despite such status, Kindler has yet to release a full length comedy album. Well, he had yet to release such a thing until Hence the Humor came out today. Kindler has actually even released a special I Wish I Was Bitter long before this, but, leave it to a freewheeling deconstructionist like Andy to put out a debut album after everything else he has achieved in his storied stand-up career.

To that point, Andy shows off he what he does best with digging himself in holes and then nimbly jumping out them with such mastered ease. Kindler has jokes, then jokes about his own jokes, then asides about why he has to make jokes about said jokes and it all comes so fast, ricocheting from every angle, it’s one hell of a satisfying ride (that we’ve taken several times and we’ll take several times over again).

We wish we didn’t have to wait for Kindler to release a comedy album, but, it was worth the wait (even if you didn’t know you were waiting).

Andy Kindler “Hence the Humor” is out now from AST Records.

Dwayne Kennedy’s “Who The Hell Is Dwayne Kennedy?” Makes Sure That Will Remember the Name Dwayne Kennedy

May 4, 2020
News
comedy album, political comedy, stand up comedy

To say that Dwayne Kennedy has been around the block in comedy is a vast understatement. Kennedy has more than proven his comedic mettle, especially when it comes to touching upon politics or issues of race, for decades whether on stage or writing for a whole row of envelope-pushing socio-political comedy TV series.

Actually, Kennedy has quite the subtly upbeat, inviting persona that makes his takes on, well, everything so accessible no matter how pointed they get. This full length debut album Who The Hell Is Dwayne Kennedy? really shows how powerful Kennedy’s laid-back charm (he has even got a relaxed charm when he’s angry) is. Cruising through bits on black serial killers, Trump’s unreasonable life span, or the systemic machinations of the NFL, Dwayne cleverly weaves the right amount of silliness through the whole hour that one might forget how radical Dwayne is getting in his material. Hopefully, after listening to it, you’ll only ask the title’s question ironically.

Who The Hell Is Dwayne Kennedy? came out just a few days ago from Oakhead Records and you can (and very much should) get it here or wherever you listen to comedy albums.

Dave Hill’s “The Pride of Cleveland” Is a Pretty Perfect Blend Stand-Up Comedy and Dave Shredding on Guitar

News
comedy album, dave hill, musical comedy, stand up comedy, storytelling

Dave Hill truly is a renaissance man (even dressing as classy as a renaissance man should). Thus, his comedy has always presented a plethora humorous riches blending his gifts in being a stand-up comedian, a raconteur, a poet, and having killer chops when it comes to playing a guitar.

The Pride of Cleveland, Dave’s brand new album marvelously showcases how Hill orchestrates an entire comedic experience with seamlessly weaving between music, riffing, stories, bits, jokes, asides. His playful, animated charisma really shines in the hour and is the key ingredient in bringing every corner of Dave’s comedy together for this hour. Even when he makes fun of his band while jamming with them or is self-deprecating while effortlessly pulling off a hot lick on his ax during a story about opening for Snoop Dogg or dives into abjectly silly geographically specific pick-up lines, Dave’s jolly persona remains. Truly, we were guffawing the whole way through.

Dave Hill’s The Pride of Cleveland is out now from 800 Pound Gorilla Records. You can and very, very much should pick up the album here.

Nick Nemeroff’s “The Pursuit of Comedy Has Ruined My Life” Has a Plethora of Satisfying Absurdities

April 27, 2020
News
comedy album, nick nemeroff, stand up comedy

In an age of comedy where the “truth” and being honest and vulnerable has seemed to take precedent, the artisans of purely, unapologetically silly jokes have become increasingly rare. Those that have any knack for the meticulous nature of that comedic style are even rarer, which is why you should really savor the jokes of one Nick Nemeroff.

Nemeroff’s delivery is as drawn out and dry as we have seen in quite some time, especially on his new album, The Pursuit of Comedy Has Ruined My Life. There is such a slow burn to the build-up of his jokes, there’s plentiful giggling to be had the longer he draws out the joke before getting to the punchline. The noticeable pauses and the deliberate pacing really ratchet up the tension and Nemeroff is a deft writing talent and finding the perfectly ridiculous twist, turn, and punchline to release said tension.

Also, Nemeroff does, from time to time, revel in being self-aware of how beautifully absurd his material is and how he delivers it in such a reserved tone of voice. These momentary breaks in character really sweeten the game that Nemeroff is playing with the crowd during his set and consequently adds another entire layer of fun to be had.

Nick Nemeroff’s The Pursuit of Comedy Has Ruined My Life will be available to buy/listen to on Tues. Apr. 27th, but you can pre-order on Apple Music now.

Here’s a bit of what Nemeroff has up his sleeve in the meantime and you’ll see what we’ve been saying.

Andy Daly’s Latest Album “Four More Sweaters: Monsters Take Your Questions” Out Now

April 24, 2020
News

The prospect of committing an entire comedy album to doing characters has always been a risky one, which is why only a few comedians attempt it and even fewer actually pull it off. One of those comedians is Andy Daly who released his groundbreaking album 9 Sweaters featuring Daly’s repertoire of characters that are so darkly funny about 12 years ago.

Now in 2020, a time when the monsters are more out in the open than they have been in recent memory, Andy Daly has just released his follow-up Four More Sweaters: Monsters Take Your Questions, which features four, a la the album title, monsters of different ilks displaying their horrific wares in the most ridiculous light possible. Thanks to Daly’s deft craftsmanship, showing the darker side of humanity via the Poet Laureate of the West, Dalton Wilcox, the seediest man on Broadway, Don DiMello, Honorary Hollywood Mayor Chad Gardner, and Scientology creator himself L. Ron Hubbard is so subversively hysterical. Daly takes great care in crafting their monologue, respective worlds, catchphrases as well as honing in on many of their worst, out-of-left-field details about them. Each of the four characters taking questions from the audience ratchets up the absurdity even further. Daly takes license to get even more mischievous when the questions are particularly innocent, but always makes sure to show how terrible such people really are and are worth ridicule via cackling by any and all listening to Four More Sweaters.

Andy Daly’s Four More Sweaters: Monsters Take Your Questions is out now, fresh from AST Records. Get it/listen to it on multiple platforms here.

Please Get and Enjoy Amber Preston’s Terrific Album “Sparkly Parts”

amber preston, comedy album, stand up comedy

The arrival of comedy albums recorded in the before times (you know with audiences gathering in tight spaces to laugh communally) keeps being a very welcome and very nostalgic break to the reality that we’re faced with and have been faced with over the last couple of months.

Amber Preston’s brand new album Sparkly Parts that was just released last week is one such delightful vacation from reality. Preston’s pristine Midwestern accent and persona disguises her worldly experience throughout the record. The contrast between the two just makes her keen comedic observations all the sweeter and unmistakably charming (even if they get a little risqué here or there). There’s a homespun feeling to it all, but Preston’s astute writing and craftsmanship really serve up a thoroughly satisfying hour (especially with how she closes it all on such a good punchline).

So, go get Amber Preston‘s Sparkly Parts as it’s available now for download from Stand Up! Records.

Andy Daly Is Coming Out With a New Album “Four More Sweaters: Monsters Take Your Questions”

When it comes to doing characters in comedy, Andy Daly is one of the best around not only committing to his well-fleshed out, hilariously disturbed characters, but truly inhabiting them and their version of reality. Daly really paints a portrait with their observations, intentions, and personas that are so darkly funny. 2008 saw the release of his seminal album Nine Sweaters from AST Records featuring many of his best characters doing extended, hysterical monologues.

Announced yesterday, Daly will be coming out with his second album, a follow-up appropriately titled Four More Sweaters: Monsters Take Your Questions that, based on the wondrous album art, features the likes of such Daly classic characters (that you might have heard on Comedy Bang! Bang! over the years) as Dalton Wilcox and Don Dimello. Perhaps, they’ll be talking to the crowd on the album given its title.

It has been well over a decade since Nine Sweaters and we sincerely can’t wait to see what Andy has up the sixteen sleeves of this particular part of his character cache. Look for Four More Sweaters: Monsters Take Your Questions to be released digitally on Fri. Apr. 24th from AST Records.

Since Grant Lyon’s Album Release Parties for “Scheduled Fun Time” Got Cancelled, He Made a Digital One

March 27, 2020
News
album release party, comedy album, grant lyon, stand up comedy

As everything involving people gathering got shut down a few weeks ago, performers of all kinds, set to put on shows on all throughout March and April, had to reconfigure everything and drastically dive into rescheduling, postponing, etc. When it comes to the prospect of releasing your new comedy album with accompanying live release shows, one might have to get pretty clever with how to go forward in these times.

Thus, Grant Lyon, who did indeed release a brand new stand-up comedy album Scheduled Fun Time this week, was unable to do the multiple album release shows that he intended to do right around now. Instead, he made a digital release party complete with a vast line-up of guests and some truly great stories about Grant, all stitched together from videos shot remotely and clips of their stand-up from the before times.

On Lyon’s release show are the likes of Cameron Esposito, Jake Weisman, Brent Weinbach, Dave Ross, Zach Sherwin, Shane Mauss, Ryan O’Flanagan, Dave Waite, Mitch Burrow, and so many more. We don’t all get to be a single venue to hear all of this together, but this still is quite the release show given the circumstances.

Please enjoy all 45 min. of Grant Lyon’s Album Release Party Show here.

Also, go get the aforementioned album Scheduled Fun Time by Grant Lyon that was the impetus for this digital release party. Lyon shows off his meticulous crafting of observational humor as well as having one of the best stories about being a comedian winning in court of all time. Get/listen to Scheduled Fun Time here.

Please Get David Venhuizen’s Marvelously Silly Debut Album “Barn Door Open”

March 26, 2020
News
comedy album, david venhuizen, stand up comedy

David Venhuizen has always stuck to his guns of being one of the abjectly sillier comedians in the LA scene for as long as we’ve seen him go up. His commitment to his bits, never breaking is something to behold.

While listening to this debut album, Barn Door Open, we were reminded of that fact that in the 10 or so years that we’ve seen Venhuizen go up around town, we’ve never seen him break even though the progression of his bits are so absurd and out of nowhere and truly go to places that you don’t expect. Often, he’ll start from a very grounded, organic place of very specific observations of his life, but David then oscillates to something fantastical or meta or even shout a rant that’s also joyfully out of left field.

Thus, Barn Door Open, really is a journey of a comedy album that will definitely make you enjoy forgetting about getting to any sort of destination (though there is one and it usually is very silly even when Venhuizen gets vulnerable near the end of the hour).

So, go get Barn Door Open, available now, here on Apple Music.

Vanessa Gonzalez’s My Birthday’s Tomorrow Is a Really Damn Good Debut Album

ast records, comedy album, stand up comedy, vanessa gonzalez

It has been a relatively short time since Vanessa Gonzalez touched down in LA from Austin and she has been nothing but a delightful and silly force to be reckoned with.

Gonzalez combines a measured amount of attitude and verve with an irresistible sense of play in her stand-up. She speaks from the heart, expressing herself emphatically through all of her deeply personal stories, but threads so much fun in every bit that she does that it doesn’t matter how dark or blue she gets. Vanessa is just undeniably a hoot to watch and listen to. Her style is shown off exquisitely on her debut album, My Birthday’s Tomorrow, which offers so much vulnerability (pretty much from the second she takes the stage), but still is full of Vanessa’s unique charm.

My Birthday’s Tomorrow is available today from AST Records at Apple Music, Amazon, or wherever you get/listen to comedy albums.

Moshe Kasher’s Crowd Surfing Vol. 1 Really Captures the Joy of Crowd Work

In stand-up comedy, so much of crowd work is dependent on how quick a comedian can be on their feet. There is also a great deal of finesse involved as well. How perceptive one comedian can be from moment-to-moment can be the difference between unraveling into utter chaos and delightfully riding right up to that line.

Moshe Kasher takes great care to not only be as quick as can be with his razor sharp wit and ribbing audience members just the right amount on his new album Crowd Surfing Vol. 1, but he achieves his goal of making it engaging and captivating for us listeners that weren’t at this particular taping. He succeeds in capturing that lightning in a bottle that is stand-up crowd work by letting audience members tell stories and then slickly threading his commentary throughout. It’s a clever move on Moshe’s part by letting audience stories sort of anchor the “crowd work experience” and then cutting loose with his magnificent blend of high and low brow references, phrasing, and graceful delivery/cadence.

Best of all with Moshe Kasher: Crowd Surfing Vol. 1: A Crowd Work Experience, you can enjoy hearing some truly top shelf riffing with the crowd and have zero worries of being made fun of.

Moshe Kasher: Crowd Surfing Vol. 1: A Crowd Work Experience is available now wherever you get/listen to/stream your comedy albums.

Atsuko has a fascinating story of coming to America, some of which finds its way on this debut album, but i control me, making for a very intriguing listen for that alone. Also, she has very, very clever observations through her unique Asian-American immigrant lens, nimbly told with an undeniably fun delivery.

Undoubtedly, this debut album is a very good sign of what’s to come (even after Okatsuka already has very enjoyable body of work)

Most love letters don’t come in the form of a comedy album. In fact, it’s hard to think of any hour of stand-up comedy being a love letter to anything (save for Blake Wexler’s album of voicemails from Todd Glass).

Leave it to Chris Gethard, the comedian who likely wears his heart on his sleeve more than anyone else in comedy, to dedicate an album something he loves deeply, his home state of New Jersey.

This album, Taylor Ham, Egg, and Cheese is indeed chock full of Jersey intricacies, references, and name checks greeted with hollers and applause. Gethard flexes the depth of his Jersey identity here, but, to the Jersey uninitiated, you don’t feel lost throughout. The sheer love that he has for the place, the people, and the way his experiences with the two shaped him into the punk rock sweetheart comedian that he is today emanates through every bit and becomes the core of the humor. No one really loves Jersey quite like Gethard and he shows how beautiful of a thing that is.

If you’re looking for some sweetness in your comedy, please listen to and enjoy Chris Gethard’s Taylor Ham, Egg, and Cheese here or on Spotify.

The idea of recording an hour of comedy has greatly evolved over last handful of years, whether it be a special or an album. Nick Youssef has opted to take a more personal, more raw take on it by recording and releasing material more frequently at ease in the form of EPs under the title “White Hot Fire”.

White Hot Fire 3: Into the Gray represents the third in this series that really has a feel of a comedy bootleg, so to speak. As such, you get a real satisfyingly gritty performance full of asides and riffs and crowd work to the point where you kind of feel immersed in Youssef’s detailed, colorful observations. Also, Nick gets real into the thick of his own psyche, warts and all, and digs up some real gems. On top of all of that, Nick is so good, as always, at weaving together his material pretty seamlessly that makes the record run so smoothly.

White Hot Fire 3: Into the Gray dropped this week and is available on Apple Music, Spotify, or wherever you listen to comedy albums.

It seems like eons ago that we had one Eric Dadourian on our handpicked compilation album, Comedians of Interest Vol. 1. Yet, Dadourian is as spry and mischievous as ever in his first full length comedy album Nebraska 2 and we absolutely love him for it.

Eric not only dives head first into the notion of tall tales made taller for comedic effect (it is being sold physically as a cassette tape w/digital download FYI), but he sells all of his stories, asides, riffs, etc. with such fervor that it’s a really jubilant ride the whole way through (no matter if you believe him or not). Truly, life is so damn short and Eric relishes every fraction of a second of it with abandon in his comedy as showcased in this hour.

Also, Nebraska 2 has one of our favorite closers to a comedy album/special this year (and probably in recent memory).

Sean Patton is pretty much an unparalleled master of blending stories with riffing into beautiful flights of fancy. He has maintained such a status for us for several years now and, as such, his name really should be showing up way more when it comes to those “best of” lists and on the line-ups for specials at networks/streaming services. Set-by-set, Patton never fails to have us bust up laughing as he did with this latest hour.

Scuttlebutt, his brand new album and follow-up to the brilliant Standard Operating Procedure, furthers all such notions as Patton takes everyone down a winding river of his imagination and his deepest, most vulnerable parts of himself for some truly beautiful, wildly colorful comedy. As with any Sean Patton set, Scuttlebutt is a breathtaking, hysterical journey that you almost won’t believe you went on once it’s over.

NYC’s Doug Smith serves up a terrific debut album here with Barely Regal. Smith has carved out his place in NYC comedy as a stand-up and co-created one of favorite things awhile ago in the experimental stand-up show, See You in Hell.

There seems to be a very classic feel to Barely Regal with Doug’s myriad of stories and observations of his life and straightforward, low key delivery. Also, Smith’s debut album still feels current, modern, and relevant as he makes that “classic feel” work for these times that we live in. 2019 Comedy Grammy Nominees Are Jim Gaffigan, Ellen DeGeneres, Aziz Ansari, Trevor Noah, and Dave Chappelle

The nominees for all of the Grammys were announced this morning covering dozens and dozens of categories including one for comedy.

Thus, the nominees for Best Comedy Album are as follows:

  • QUALITY TIME
    Jim Gaffigan
  • RELATABLE
    Ellen DeGeneres
  • RIGHT NOW
    Aziz Ansari
  • SON OF PATRICIA
    Trevor Noah
  • STICKS & STONES
    Dave Chappelle

For “Best Comedy Album”, the Grammys deem that their consideration for the award must contain “…at least 51% playing time of new recordings. It would also seem, from this field of nominees for 2019, that you have your album derived from a highly publicized and televised comedy special and have to be amongst the most famous comedians working right now.

All these specials (and do remember that these were specials first and albums afterwards) certainly sparked a lot of conversation (both good and bad) and have a lot of notoriety that way. With that in mind, is this the way to be in contention for a Comedy Grammy these days?

Right now, actually just recording a great comedy album isn’t enough.

Daniel Van Kirk’s “Thanks Diane” Is One Hell of a Debut Album

Not that there’s a real traditional road to and through stand-up comedy these days, but Daniel Van Kirk’s road there has certainly been circuitous and he’s all the better for it. Thanks Diane, his debut comedy album, is the great summation of Van Kirk’s years of comedic excellence in playing characters (including one of the best Mark Wahlberg impressions around), podcasting (Pen Pals, Dumb People Town, Hindsight), and incredibly earnest storytelling.

This hour (derived from his Together Tour) is a magnificent, fully realized piece of postmodern comedy. As opposed to a stitched together hour of bits that make up several comedy specials/albums (including some very good ones), there’s a clear intentional thematic and formalistic arc on Thanks Diane that is very satisfying and unlike nearly everything we’ve listened to or seen in recent memory. Daniel does weave through stories and experiences in his life, as he is a spectacular storyteller, but he also has such a great feel for oscillating in front of and behind the fourth wall with the crowd. It’s an immersive, trenchant, and hysterical journey topped off with a touch of lovable chaos.

Daniel Van Kirk’s debut album Thanks Diane comes out this Friday, Nov. 15th, but you can (and absolutely should) pre-order it now (and get a track in advance) here.
