Please Enjoy Lisa Curry’s Debut Album “Alive For a While”

September 2, 2020
News
alive for a while, comedy album, debut, full force records, lisa curry, stand up

In the realm of dark comedy, there is a certain line to observe. It doesn’t necessarily have much to do with how dark you get, but more to do with how forced or artificial a particularly sinister punchline might be. Going dark/blue for dark/blue’s sake, more often than not is not that impressive or, truth be told, all that shocking.

Lisa Curry‘s dark streak in her comedy, however, unmistakably comes from a very genuine place and she has the sharp writing to deliver it perfectly. Her debut album Alive For A While puts Curry’s verve for dark jokes impressively on display. Line after line, Curry paints furiously strokes in the imagery of her own stories and observations, but never loses the tether to her own experience making for cathartically funny bits.

Another layer that makes this debut hour more impressive is that Curry recorded it in London rather than any home club she might have her in the U.S. Going very dark for your first hour overseas is quite the feat and Curry really makes it work.

So,  please get and enjoy Alive For A While, out today, right here.

Coming fresh off of being an unrepped New Face at JFL Montreal, Katie Hannigan shows Colbert’s crowd at The Late Show what a handful of industry folks got to see just a week or so before.

She has such a magnetic persona and delivery that contrasts perfectly with her material about her life, making it a real joy to watch this late night debut.

See the set for yourself here.

Kill Rock Stars continues their stellar catalog of comedy albums that includes Kurt Braunohler, Hari Kondabolu, Cameron Esposito, and starting today, Rhea Butcher.

Butcher’s first album, aptly titled Butcher, offers a great introduction to Rhea as the honest, yet very charming stand-up comedian. Specifically, Rhea gives a great glimpse into her cool life as a lesbian, vegetarian, a baseball enthusiast, and more, but she does so in a way where you’d never think of her just as a funny lesbian, vegetarian, or baseball comedian. You just think she’s a funny comedian that happens to identify with all those things.

So, get Butcher here along with collectible t-shirts and hats off of Kill Rock Stars.

Stephen Colbert Might Have Just Scored One of the Best Debuts in Late Night History

Last night, Stephen Colbert proved that he is a more than worthy successor to David Letterman’s desk at The Late Show.

Throughout the history of late night talk shows, the first episode is often characterized by awkwardness, confusion, and a sort of frantic energy that aims to just keep the ship together as it barely has embarked on what’s supposed to be a long, long voyage.

However, Stephen Colbert was not only groomed to be a late night talk show host, but with his time at The Colbert Report, had built all the muscles necessary to be a late night talk show host, in character or not.

It should come as no surprise that, Colbert had no stilted moments in his monologue and ran a tight ship right from the opening sequence to paying tribute to Letterman to touring the new and improved Ed Sullivan Theater to the closing credits of his debut night on The Late Show. It might sound obvious to say, but one definitely got the sense after watching the inaugural episode that Stephen has been doing this late night thing for awhile.

You can see that Colbert, even sans character, can still properly stick it to Trump.

While some might clamor for the more rambunctious, satirical Colbert of The Colbert Report to do the interviews of the likes of George Clooney and especially Jeb Bush, Stephen manages inject some trademark cleverness in conversation. Hopefully, he’ll play that up more down the line.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is still very much a very traditional late night talk show with a monologue, suit, band, desk pieces, guests, etc., but Colbert showed on his very first night, how this old format can still be done well in 2015. For that, Stephen should be marked down for one of the best late night debuts of all time.

On top of that, Colbert had a thoroughly interesting inclusion of Jimmy Fallon throughout the show that almost seemed like an olive branch between the two late night hosts on different networks. We’ll be curious to see if that makes a decidedly different route for this era of late night as compared to the debacles of the last one.

Whether you watched the premiere or not (odds are that you were on of the 6.5 million that did), we urge you to watch the entire premiere episode when you make a spare hour for yourself.

Cameron Esposito Makes Great Late Night Stand Up Debut in Front of Jay Leno and Craig Ferguson

Amongst the huddles of comedians, there are comparatively very few, especially nowadays, who make it to doing a set on a late night talk show. Even rarer is doing a great set, prompting the host to call them over to the couch and chat.

Much more rare, probably because it has never happened, is that when a comedian is called over to the couch by Craig Ferguson with Jay Leno sitting beside him after they interjected, admittedly like Statler and Waldorf, during a set that was going pretty great, then hear Leno say, “White men are on their way out! Lesbians rule!”

Well, that’s exactly what happened to the wonderful Cameron Esposito last night when making her late night debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and it was pretty damn hilarious and amazing.

Please watch it here now.
