Nick Youssef Beautifully Shows the Uselessness of Toxic Masculinity on “Take Care”

March 6, 2023
News
comedy special, nick youssef, take care

As historic as it is that Chris Rock performed his latest hour special as a live-to-stream broadcast on Netflix, the vision of the world that Rock paints seems, in a word, defeatist (except for the final passage where he screams about Will Smith being a bitch for slapping him over and over), especially when it comes the whims of men and their relationship to their masculinity. When you remember that Rock is 58, his proclamations about how women’s beauty runs the world seem a little less surprising.

In contrast, Nick Youssef’s latest hour, his special Take Care, presents a subversively nuanced idea of what a man and mental wellness can (and should) be in 2023. Through a seamless work of resonant and funny personal stories with what an actually healthy relationship looks like (i.e. plenty of crying is allowed), the feeling of getting the right depression meds, keen observations of “men being men” from a distance (though still viewed as a man), Nick concludes that men, and really everyone, would do so much better if they took the title of this special to heart.

This hour makes you wonder how, in 2023, toxic masculinity can be so toxic still when there is much more empathetic and evolved side to those folks who go by he/him, but does leave you hopeful that there is a growing death-rattle-ish air to the men afraid of being “feminized”. That’s a rare feat as is in comedy at any time, but even more so in a year that features a big time comedy special called “From Bleak to Dark”.

Lucky for us all, Nick Youssef’s Take Care is streaming for your convenience, free of charge, on YouTube right here.

Pick of the Day: Nick Youssef’s First Special Taping (in NYC) 9/27

live taping, manhattan, nick youssef, nyc comedy, stand up comedy, west village, zinc bar

Stand-up comedy is pretty much back on pace with where it was in 2019, which means there are plenty of live tapings for specials and albums for you to attend. In fact, there are so many that you’ve very likely to choose which ones you ought to make it out to.

In NYC, you really ought to not miss Nick Youssef taping anything, much less his very first special, even much more less a special being taped at an extremely swanky spot in the West Village. Youssef was a stalwart part of LA’s scene for the longest time and has very impressively carved the same spot for himself in NYC’s even more crowded field of comics.

Following a handful of very good albums, Nick is indeed doing his very first comedy special, completely crowdfunded, on Tues. Sept. 27th at what is normally a very classy jazz bar, Zinc Bar, which should be the added bonus of seeing Youssef present his finely carved, astutely observed comedy wares.

There will be two tapings, 8PM & 10PM, and tickets are $25 and you can (and should) go get them here right now.

The idea of recording an hour of comedy has greatly evolved over last handful of years, whether it be a special or an album. Nick Youssef has opted to take a more personal, more raw take on it by recording and releasing material more frequently at ease in the form of EPs under the title “White Hot Fire”.

White Hot Fire 3: Into the Gray represents the third in this series that really has a feel of a comedy bootleg, so to speak. As such, you get a real satisfyingly gritty performance full of asides and riffs and crowd work to the point where you kind of feel immersed in Youssef’s detailed, colorful observations. Also, Nick gets real into the thick of his own psyche, warts and all, and digs up some real gems. On top of all of that, Nick is so good, as always, at weaving together his material pretty seamlessly that makes the record run so smoothly.

White Hot Fire 3: Into the Gray dropped this week and is available on Apple Music, Spotify, or wherever you listen to comedy albums.

Nick Youssef’s Latest Album “1982″ Out Now

Nick Youssef has just come out with his follow up to his solid debut album Stop Not Owning This, 1982 (a riff on Taylor Swift’s album title “1989″ perhaps?).

For this hour, Youssef examines making it out of his 20s into his 30s. It’s well trodden territory for comedy, but Nick delivers it effortlessly with such painstaking, colorful detail that it does stand out from the pack. He also balances poking fun at millennials and those even younger for all their shortcomings as well as throwing himself under the bus as a pretentious coffee addict. From start to finish, 1982 flows together so well almost like you just watched a “slice-of-life” indie flick of Youssef’s life these days.

You can 1982 off of iTunes now.

You may have a whole bevy of insults at the ready when it comes to shouting down those folks that are will to spend $5+ on a single cup of coffee.

However, leave it to those coffee addicts like Nick Youssef to really describe exactly how ridiculous drinking their joe at high falutin coffee shops really is.

FYI, it’s a track off his forthcoming album 1982 that’s set to release next week on May 27th from AST Records. You can (and should) pre-order it here.
