Two More John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch Specials Are On Their Way at Comedy Central

July 7, 2020
News
comedy central, john mulaney, sack lunch bunch

The beloved “for kids” (but not really) variety special John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch charmed Netflix viewers last year with its esoteric and niche adult humor juxtaposed against the framework of a children’s variety TV special. It did such a smash up job in that regard that people are still talking about it several months later as one of their favorite hours of comedy in recent memory.

So, announced today, Comedy Central took that cue (and, we’re guessing, a passed up opportunity by Netflix) to do two more Sack Lunch Bunch specials with Mulaney, one of which will be positioned for the holidays.

Whether will be allowed to gather in public by the times these come out or not, these two upcoming John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch will be worth two more of your hours inside to watch and enjoy.

Please Enjoy This Latest, Vivacious Set from Daniel Webb

July 6, 2020
News
comedy central, daniel webb, stand up

We’ve said plenty of things in praise of Daniel Webb here and elsewhere and we will continue to do so because he is such a sharp, quick-witted, subversive charmer.  Since he started making his way from Austin, TX to LA, we’ve always been taken with how undeniably fun his entire persona is and how dark and blue he can go while still maintaining his merry disposition.

As part of Comedy Central’s digital stand-up showcase series, the network caught this marvelous set from Daniel that we’d highly urge you to enjoy here (especially if you’re going to catch him live at the Tribeca Drive-In this weekend).

Nore Davis’ Live From The Comedy Trap House, One of the First Comedy Albums Made Over Zoom, Out Today

July 3, 2020
News
blonde medicine, nore davis

Nore Davis has consistently been upbeat, joyful, and hopeful in his stand-up in every one of his hours that he’s released over the years. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Davis, like many other comedians has done his best to keep his craft sharp, express himself, and get laughs over Zoom, the video conferencing platform that a good majority of comedians had no idea about until the latter part of March.

Davis opted to headline on his own from from the get go at “The Comedy Trap House” for a few weeks with a live Zoom audience, so there would be laughs to had (in contrast to the plethora of live-stream shows with comedians performing to silence while a virtual audience enjoys it on the other end). From that, Nore opted to put out a brand new album via Zoom.

Thus, Live From The Comedy Trap House was born with Nore speaking from the heart with his signature warmth about COVID-19, the murder of George Floyd/Black Lives Matter, and even a break-up he went through while in lockdown. In fact, this was only recorded days after George Floyd’s life was stolen, which gives you Nore’s perspective at its freshest and most raw. You very rarely get that in a comedy record, but then again, this is a special album.

The hour is somewhat surreal as you can almost sense that the laughter from the audience and Nore are disembodied voices, but they still managed to be connected and laugh and giggle throughout the whole album. Davis’ hope and joy are still clearly intact, which is amazing considering how deeply traumatic every single day has been over the last several months. Live From The Comedy Trap House is and will be a fascinating document of this historical moment both because of how it was created entirely over Zoom and will likely be the most “virtual sounding” comedy album and for it speaking to everything that’s happening in the world that other future generations might be in disbelief about whenever we talk about it.

So, go listen and enjoy and take in Live From The Comedy Trap House, a comedy album that is very well historic on its own. Fresh from Blonde Medicine, it’s streaming at all the places you get your comedy albums.

Please Enjoy This Socially Distanced Produced Bit About Going to Trader Joe’s by Naomi Ekperigin

July 3, 2020
News
naomi ekperigin, stand up, trader joe's

When it comes to stand-up comedy, the majority of stages are still empty, microphones untouched, and audiences still (hopefully) safely at home during this pandemic. Thankfully, good folks like director Scott Moran have been doing safely, socially distanced bits of comedy that, as with all of his work, have such a distinct, poignant look.

This latest safely produced bit of stand-up comes from Naomi Ekperigin (our guest on TCB Field Report this week) while sitting on the steps at the back of her house to go off on this splendid rant about what her experience going to Trader Joe’s in these times of quarantine is like.

Please enjoy it (and be more mindful and considerate at Trader Joe’s or any store that you’re going to these days) here.

Classic MTV Animated Series Continue to Make Comeback with Revivals of Clone High and Beavis and Butt-Head

July 2, 2020
News
beavis and butthead, clone high, mike judge

Possibly following the lead from the Jodie, the upcoming Daria spin-off at Comedy Central, other MTV animated properties are getting another shot, specifically Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Clone High (via  Deadline) and Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head (via THR).

Beavis and Butt-Head is already in the works for its return at Comedy Central with series creator Mike Judge back overseeing the revival that supposedly will include specials and spin-offs. Clone High’s reboot has been announced by MTV Studios, but it has yet to find a network to call home.

Given the need for new content and animation being suddenly one of the best, safest ways to produce a TV series while quarantine continues, it’s not entirely surprising to see a new wave of nostalgia-baiting additions to development slates. Those that grew up with Clone High hold on to the series very fondly and the success of Lord and Miller (making things like The LEGO Movie be better than anyone could have possibly imagined) after that has probably made Clone High fans even more loyal. Mike Judge has also had a monumental career following Beavis and Butt-Head including Office Space, King of the Hill, Idiocracy and Silicon Valley and has expanded his fan base beyond the Beavis and Butt-Head crowd. It’s a unique situation for both series as not only is the strong pull that many millennials and even some Gen X-ers will have to at least binge a few episodes, but the curiosity of fans from all of their other work to check out these upcoming revamped versions of their early work.

How the production and release of these two series will be a curious case to watch. Animated production does take a bit of time and we do wonder how these shows will fare if there is already a vaccine in place and people just want to stay outside for awhile.

Conan Will Start Taping Episodes at Largo at the Coronet Theatre (Though with No Audience and Remote Guests)

July 2, 2020
News
conan, conan o'brien, largo at the coronet theatre, tbs

It has been months since late night hosts have taped an episode of their show from an actual stage. Kimmel, Colbert, and Meyers have done their best to gussy up their homes and Samantha Bee has just been doing her show from the woods. John Oliver is utilizing a giant blank white wall in his home and Hasan Minhaj has been going entirely with a virtual background, which isn’t too far from an actual episode of Patriot Act.

However, Conan O’Brien is going to break new ground yet again (he was pretty on the ball about doing bits while sheltered at home during the start of quarantine) as he will begin taping episodes of Conan for TBS from the long standing, revered comedy and music venue, Largo at the Coronet Theatre. They’ll be maintaining all safety protocol along government and industry regulations along with not having a live audience and bringing in guests for interviews remotely over Zoom. Limited crew and staff will be present.

This is a very noteworthy move as Conan will not only be back on stage once again to do Conan, but this will undoubtedly keep Largo’s doors open since they’ve had to go dark this entire time during lockdown with no idea (especially with the re-closing of dine-in restaurants in LA county) of when they would get to reopen and do so safely.

Also, in addition to Conan taping at Largo, the monthly Team Coco show, Moses Storm & Friends will do a Twitch live-stream at The Coronet as well starting July 9th. Again, there will be no audience present, but you will get to see live comedy from one of the most rustic looking auditorium in all of Los Angeles.

Pick of the Day: Live at Tribeca Drive-In @ Rose Bowl

July 2, 2020
News
comedy dynamics, daniel rugg webb, dave helem, drive in theater, erica rhodes, ester steinberg, live comedy, stand up comedy

With the return to popularity that drive-in theaters have gotten during these months of lockdown, it’s no surprise to see that other forms of entertainment are opting to try to do something at a drive-in that isn’t just screening a movie because people can stay in their cars to stay safe as the COVID-19 pandemic persists (as well as being one of the very few permitted public events right now). That indeed includes live comedy. LA hasn’t gotten the experience of a live drive-in stand-up comedy show yet, though that will be changing next week.

Comedy Dynamics is hosting four exclusive nights of live stand-up comedy, July 9th-12th at 9PM, at the Tribeca Drive-In pop-up at The Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The Tribeca Drive-In itself actually starts screening movies tonight.

Headlining will be a handful of comedians that you ought to get to know since they’ll, as far as we’ve seen, probably rise further up the comedy ladder than they already have very soon. That includes Dave Helem, Ester Steinberg, Daniel Webb, and Erica Rhodes performing 7/9-7/12 respectively.

Tickets are $26 per vehicle and you can go get tickets here. If you do go, do take proper caution and limit physical contact, wear a mask, and maintain distance at all times. Also, please note that Comedy Dynamics will be taping these performances for “later viewing” if you’d rather stay safe at home and still watch.

Yassir Lester Fools Internet with Fake Jersey Mike’s BLM Post to Highlight Performative Corporate Gestures

July 1, 2020
News
blm, jersey mike's, parody, satire, yassir lester

Plenty of corporations are trying to join in on the cultural uprising around the globe sparked off by the murder of George Floyd. Yet, as corporations often do when it comes to taking a stance, they fall short of the mark and often make tone deaf, performative gestures.

To point this out, Yassir Lester made a fake Jersey Mike’s post on Twitter that claimed that they would offensively rename a sandwich as a point of solidarity with Black Lives Matter. Though there was no connection to an official Jersey Mike’s social media account, plenty of people ran with it like it was a real statement from the real Jersey Mike’s.

With that being the case, Lester, 12 hours later, owned up to creating the hoax and then asked, “How bad off are we that we thought a corporation would rename a sandwich, offensively, as a statement of solidarity?” He also added, “Why is no one using Google?” as it would indeed having been easy to see that this wasn’t a real advertisement by Jersey Mike’s.

Lester went on to be more emphatic about his faux Jersey Mike’s tweet remarking that corporations of all kinds often say that they will offer support to communities in need, but, often, no one knows where that money is going. Marginalized groups are more in need of direct support through defunding police, access to health care and housing, etc. and corporations shouldn’t just seem like they’re doing enough by ill-advised performative gestures on social media. Again, this one was fake, but you have certainly received some sort of corporate/company newsletter in your inbox that actually falls short of supporting marginalized people getting what they need to live like so many of us with any modicum of privilege.

For our money, this is high level satire that is so effective that it might just open people’s eyes to yet another thing that they were unfortunately overlooking.

The tweet went viral and, despite his explanation, there is local news coverage that talks to people who still seem to miss the point.

The latest TCB Field Report has the amazing comedian/writer/podcaster Naomi Ekperigin zooming with TCB’s Jake Kroeger this week. Naomi and Jake take time to remember the late, great Carl Reiner and also dissect what lies ahead with comedy on TV with the renewal of Curb Your Enthusiasm (i.e. how relatable will Larry be in a post-pandemic world?) as well as how Hollywood is still missing the mark in achieving true racial equity. Ekperigin also lets us in on how her podcast and now, weekly Twitch live-stream, Couples Therapy, has been fostering community in quarantine and her personal experience finding connection through doing comedy on Zoom.

Also, Jake would like to apologize for referring to the character Lawrence on Insecure as Louis. Please forgive him.

R.I.P. Carl Reiner, 1922-2020

June 30, 2020
News
carl reiner

At this point, you’ve probably heard of the passing of true comedy legend Carl Reiner at the age of 98. You’ve also probably heard or seen highlights of his magnificently lengthy career listed off stretching all the way back to him writing on Sid Caesar’s Show of Shows and creating The Dick Van Dyke Show all the way to being instrumental to Steve Martin’s The Jerk to his life long collaboration with Mel Brooks (over 60 years) and the numerous, numerous of memorable roles and cameos in dozens and dozens of movies and TV shows. Perhaps, you’ve even heard some friends recount their favorite memories with Reiner or people lucky enough to have encounters with him throughout his life.

We unfortunately haven’t had any personal encounters with Reiner and certainly, we don’t want to take any more of your time summarizing his career when you’ve likely read it five times over by now (though we urge you to go watch any and all of his work, go down a Carl Reiner YouTube rabbit hole, etc.).

What we will say is that Reiner, as is with his life long comedy partner Mel Brooks, had such unbelievable longevity with his sense of humor, spanning so many decades, and yet, still kept a youthful, exuberant silliness to him even in his elder years. Almost no one, even the best comedians, gets to be that funny for that long and it should be the lofty aspirations of any comedian of any kind to maintain such a level to their comedic voice as long as Reiner has.

Case in point, enjoy an appearance of Reiner on Conan from three years ago here.

Rest in peace Carl and may we binge watch and revel in your catalog for awhile now and for many years to come.

Please Watch and Listen to Blair Socci’s Powerful/Cathartic Set About Sexual Abuse

June 29, 2020
News
blair socci, sexual abuse, stand up

One of the more amazing things that comedy does is reveling with darkness and demons in such a way that makes people feel less alone. Blair Socci, who we’ve enjoyed see become a great staple around the LA comedy scene, ran this particular set at Faded LA that’s entirely about how she was sexually abused when she was a teenager. It’s a revelatory set (yet, still aggressively upbeat as is Blair’s nature) that is as truthful and vulnerable as we’ve seen anyone get in stand-up.

Sharing experiences like this, especially through the lens of comedy, is the sort of shining-the-light-on-the-darkness that likely makes other people that went through such trauma to feel unafraid to share their story. From there, really understanding how pervasive sexual abuse/harassment/assault is, we can hopefully move forward and not let that sort of harm hide in the shadows any longer.

Please, watch, enjoy, and listen to Blair’s set here.

FYI, Rory Scovel Has Been Releasing Great Morsels of His Stand-Up Every Week

June 26, 2020
News
rory scovel, stand up

The second wave of realizing that the COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t gone away, which also means the prospect of live-in-person stand-up is getting put on hold for even longer. That also means brand new bits, specials, albums of stand-up are going to take on some new form (done via Zoom or at drive-in) or they’ll be never-before-seen-or-released material from yesteryear.

Rory Scovel has plenty of his past performances, that are always equal parts beautifully ephemeral and sharply crafted, taped and, since quarantine started, began releasing bits every week. Scovel is definitely the sort of comedian whose performances are so unique to themselves, as he’s always so present and takes advantage of the moment and the space, to see excerpts from his sets is like getting an official bootleg collection track by track. If a Scovel bootleg collection were up for sale from Rory, you could definitely count us in for pre-order.

So, go get into Scovel’s weekly stand-up collection here, especially this bit that was done a month before lockdown and that will probably be relevant for quite some time.

The panel consisted of Joel Mandelkorn (CleftClips, Hot Tub with Kurt & Kristen), Christian Chavez (owner of Echoes on Pico), Joshua Snyder (Booker of Flappers Comedy Club) who stepped in for Flappers Owner Babrara Holliday, and TCB’s founder Jake Kroeger as moderator to give us all a nice strata of different segments in comedy.  Thanks again to Hold The Phone Comedy to hosting this live-stream.

The discussion goes through a myriad of the crucial topics in regards to reopening, safety, sustainability, inclusion, and more and though there isn’t a specific answers to how anything is going to happen in the not so distant future, it’s a conversation that got the wheels turning and offered a glimpse of what the different corners in LA comedy are thinking right now.

Dadaism Is Alive and Well in Eric Andre’s “Legalize Everything”

June 24, 2020
News
eric andre, legalize everything, netflix

The tenets of Dadaism (absurdist, abstract, illogical, anti-capitalist) line-up pretty damn close to the comedy of Eric Andre. The Eric Andre Show is as bonkers of a reaction against the traditional late night talk show as could be imagined and fits in line with the art movement that rose to prominence in the late 1910s and 1920s (oh, just another time when the world was at each other’s throats and there was a global pandemic).

This new hour special Legalize Everything from Andre is an ever clearer cut example of dadaist comedy 100 years after the movement started. Andre zips all over the place at a frenetic pace, but manages to hammer the subversive, anti-authority message (the title is “Legalize Everything” after all) throughout. Expertly and hilariously deconstructing the mythos of the show COPS with giant act outs to commenting, satirically contrasting the evils of factory farming with sexual desire, and also doing a whole bit on the lasting harm done by theologian John Calvin altogether make for something that feels more absurd and pointed than your general absurdist comedy. Even his story about going to a sex worker in Amsterdam, which seems pretty grounded at first takes a non-sequitur turn.

Dadaism rose under somewhat similar circumstances to 2020 and perhaps the time for Andre’s grandiose, wild visions of our world is right for the world that we’re in now. Go see Legalize Everything for yourself and enjoy Eric’s latest hour and see it as it’s now streaming on Netflix.

Just announced today, the White House Correspondents Dinner that was going to rebound from having a historian and having comedians roast the D.C., the press, and, of course, Trump with a live, in-person event on Aug. 29th is now cancelled. They had Hasan Minhaj and Keenan Thompson on deck and it looked like it’d be one of the few live events that might signal a tide turning in the pandemic as well as a great follow-up to the on-going cruel joke that is the Trump Administration.

Yet, cases are back on the rise in the U.S. and things that had reopened too fast are now scaling back. The fate of live performance is definitely hanging in the balance and thus, the event often referred to as “Nerd Prom” has cancelled its in person engagement. The WHCA says that they’re working on transitioning to a virtual event, but nothing else has been announced as of yet. One could only hope that Minhaj and Thompson stay on.

As more details come, we’ll keep you in the loop.
