After years of amazing shows in the actual back room of a comic book store, Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail will be premiering as a TV series on Comedy Central tonight.

Clear out whatever you’re doing at 12:30AM to Comedy Central and make sure you’re watching what’s been one of the best comedy shows in LA ever since it started.

As with the regular live show, artist Dave Kloc made an amazing poster for the premiere episode.

The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail: The Origin Story

Now that The Meltdown with Jonah & Kumail is a TV series having its series premiere on Comedy Central Jul. 23rd 12:30AM, you’re probably wondering how it, a great comedy show in the back of a comic book store, all got started.

Well, while it’s always been in the back of Meltdown Comics, it hasn’t always been hosted by Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani. In fact, the show had been going for awhile, but only went to the weekly phenomenon that we all know now with the forces of Jonah, Kumail, and producer/booker Emily Gordon coming together a few years ago.

Watch and hear the full origin story here.

4) Nerve.com lists five young comedians who should be movie stars. Yeah, we’d like to see Jamie Lee, Hannibal Buress, John Mulaney and Morgan Murphy in a bank heist movie.

Nerdist Theater Beyond Wednesdays

Through the link is a listing of this week Nerdist Theater events.  That’s right, there’s more than just “Meltdown” on Wednesdays.  In fact, so many people missed out on the amazing Drennon Davis and his Imaginary Radio show last Friday, right before the world was supposed to end.

So, what I’m saying… is maybe you’ll want to check out Harmontown with “Community” creator Dan Harmon or a live recording of the Nerdist Podcast or the amazing open mic hosted by Matt Mira and Paul Cibis or really anything else in the back room of Meltdown Comics that isn’t on a Wednesday.

Answer: almost too much.

If you thought the weekly installment of Meltdown with Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani was awesome, how about Dan Harmon’s Harmontown (he’s more than just the showrunner for Community), Battleship Pretension LIVE w/Kyle Kinane, and even a musical!?!?  Yes, it’s all happening at the Nerdist Theater.

It’s almost too much (emphasis on “almost”).

1) In an ongoing confusion about the upcoming Comedy Awards, what exactly is “breakthrough” about any of the nominees for Breakthrough Performer of the Year?  Most of these people have been around comedy for quite some time and are somewhat established, but the only thing that I can figure in regards to being breakthrough is that they have something, a TV show mostly, that’s really popular this year, as opposed to someone just having a whole round of debuts on the late night circuit as a comic whose name is just started to get known around entertainment and comedy circles alike.  To be accurate, the award should be called Biggest Jump by a Comedic Performer in IMDB Starmeter This Year.

2) A big change is coming to the Big Trouble in Little Tokyo Open Mic as we’re now only featuring one special guest and this Tuesday, it’s going to be a great one as we’re having Brendon Walsh come down right before he goes on the Spring Value Tour with Neil Hamburger and Todd Barry.

Into the “Heart of Darkness” of an Old Fashioned Good Time

February 27, 2011

The name “Heart of Darkness” promoted as a live comedy show might make many people a little queasy, thinking perhaps, that if they attend, they will be made uncomfortable on what is performance art attempting to be Andy Kaufman.  Though there is a higher brow in the brand of comedy that producer/host/comedian/ringleader Greg Barris wrangles for his show, one will never find themselves laughing only because they’re uncomfortably lost in the “Heart of Darkness”.

Taking place at unusual and unique venues that are a far cry from the traditional comedy club around the country, Greg Barris purposely makes his show more of an organic experience (he touches and forgives audience members) rather than another one of the stand up showcase shows that has spread like a virus across the face of Los Angeles.  In fact, at both the Burbank Moose Lodge or in the back room of Meltdown Comics for the recent two-show stint in LA, audience members got more the sense that they were hanging out after school and some really amazingly talented and hilarious friends rather than the $8 you paid to sit in a crowded room and see a “planned-enough performance”.  With a small line-up, all the performers got to play loose and at their pace, keeping the easy-going, laid-back vibe present throughout the duration of “Heart of Darkness”.

The Comedy Bureau was fortunate enough to be in attendance at the Meltdown Comics edition that had a stellar line-up of comics including the incomparable Reggie Watts (as only briefly caught on tape here) floating between a multitude of accents, jokes, and songs, the painfully, but hysterically honest stories of Sean Patton, and the anxiously funny Chelsea Peretti as well as the head of the whole operation Greg Barris and his right hand man in the form of band Dima and Doctor Juchins.  The show was sold out and packed to the gills as I gladly stood the whole time.

For anybody that has groaned when they have heard the joke set-up, “So I’m half…,” wondered if that was all that stand up comedy has become and why you’re possibly not having a good time, perhaps you should catch Greg Barris’ Heart of Darkness next time it’s in town to restore your faith in that there is indeed an alternative to stand up comedy that’s been stuck in the hey-day 80’s and it’s pretty damn funny.

1) The “insider comedian interview” format has gone viral… big time.  Forget about shoddy camera work in green rooms and back alley studios that double as living spaces.  Bigger names are coming out of the woodwork.  First Marc Maron w/his “WTF Podcast”.  Recently, Dave Holmes and “A Drink with Dave”.  Most recently, Bill Maher and “12 Mile”.  Did I mention that everyone should be watching/listening to these?

2) Everyone will be live tweeting during the Oscars and I will be here in our cavernous office keeping everyone up to speed as to what’s the funniest things written during the show.  We hand pick our featured tweets here and I almost suggest that you don’t need to watch the Oscars because the Comedy Bureau Twitter feed will be almost more entertaining (only because you need to watch the telecast to put it into context).
