You Can (and Should) Binge All of “Robbie”

May 12, 2020
News
anthony king, beau bridges, comedy central, mary holland, robbie, rory scovel, sasheer zamata, scott moran, stu jenkins

In the comedic tradition of seeing idiots not getting what they want, Rory Scovel revels in his starring role in Robbie. Akin to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the schemes of Scovel’s Robbie seem to be doomed from the start and the inevitable approach of his consequential failure is pretty damn ridiculous and fun. Also, Scovel and company (Stu Jenkins, Scott Moran, and Anthony King) have really showcased how fun it can be to watch someone who deserves to lose do so at every turn.

In fact, Robbie has the uncanny ability to screw things up just when they couldn’t be screwed up any further with Sasheer Zamata, who plays his co-parent Ava, and especially Beau Bridges who plays his dad, Robbie Sr./Coach. If you’ve ever seen Scovel do stand-up and go into one of his myriad of wild characters, we picture Robbie as a glorious, extended version of that.

We’d like to note that the hilariously offbeat-ness of the dialogue and timing shine here (accented perfectly by the jazzy, single note theme song). Several scenes get heightened in their absurdity as a result, especially whenever Robbie is arguing with his girlfriend Janie (Mary Holland) who always seems to be having a slightly different conversation than the one being actually had.

Robbie dropped online last weekend in its entirety and Comedy Central was even nice enough to let the whole series stream on YouTube here allowing you to binge all 8 episodes in one fell swoop.

In Case You’ve Missed Tip Your Waitstaff with Mike Birbiglia on IG Live, There Are Clips and Episodes on YouTube

May 12, 2020
News
john mulaney, mike birbiglia, patton oswalt, tip your waitstaff

For weeks and weeks now, Mike Birbiglia has been writing jokes with other famous comedians to raise money for the furloughed staff of comedy clubs across the United States. Called Tip Your Waitstaff, it has managed to bring in thousands and thousands of dollars in donations to support said staff and has been one of the most successful comedy live-streams to come during this pandemic era of comedy.

Since Tip Your Waitstaff broadcasts on Instagram Live meaning that you have to tune in live on Instagram when Mike broadcasts it @birbigs or watch it from his IG Stories within 24 hours. While he does do it a few times during the week, you might not be able to tune around 11AM-12PM PT (around when it usually happens) and you’ll miss the meeting of the comedic minds between Birbiglia and Patton Oswalt or Maria Bamford or John Mulaney or Roy Wood Jr.

Thankfully, Mike has been nice enough to put select clips of those Tip Your Waitstaff sessions (and even a full episode here and there) on YouTube for you to enjoy whenever you’d like. Still, if you can, you should donate and support these clubs in order for comedians to have a place to regularly perform when things start coming back (especially since live performance venues are probably going to be one of the last things to open).

Hannah Gadsby: Douglas Gets an Official Trailer

May 12, 2020
News
douglas, hannah gadsby, netflix, trailer

The reverberations of Hannah Gadsby‘s last special Nanette can still be felt years after its release on Netflix. Even as the release of her next special Douglas is just a few weeks away, Gadsby herself is still surprised the profound impact that her groundbreaking lightning rod of a special had, the worldwide notoriety that came along with it.

Thus, this next hour is absolutely one of the most highly anticipated comedy specials of this year. From this first, full official trailer, we have a suspicion that it will deliver (especially after the final joke in said trailer).

Look for Hannah Gadsby: Douglas is set to stream on Tues. May 26th on Netflix.

Pick of the Day: Dykevice with Robby Hoffman 5/14

May 12, 2020
News
lgbtq, planet scum, robby hoffman

When Robby Hoffman is given the reins to any sort of talk show format, you’re in for a real treat. Her dominating persona whips up some truly beautiful chaos that Hoffman wrangles almost effortlessly. In the before times, Hoffman was doing just that with her take on The Chris Gethard Show aptly called The Chris Gethard Show with Robby Hoffman.

Now, Robby is set to bring this vibe into live-streamed comedy with a weekly lesbian call-in advice show called Dykevice with Robby Hoffman. Robby will indeed be taking calls a dishing out plenty of hot, spicy advice no matter what the situation might be. Dykevice with Robby Hoffman will live-stream every Thursday from Planet Scum at 7PM PT/10PM ET. Tune in here.

Please Enjoy This Chat Between Maria Bamford and Stephen Colbert, One of the Last Late Show Interviews at Ed Sullivan Theatre Before Lockdown

May 12, 2020
News
late show, maria bamford, stephen colbert

As the world went into lockdown, the world of late night talk shows was thrown for a loop as to what to do. Everyday, something changed, more things closed, and crowds of people started to disappear where they would normally be. Specifically, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert attempted to do a show without a crowd still in the Ed Sullivan Theatre. Also, Colbert dressed sharply and there will professional level broadcast cameras and, at the very least, there were, probably, crew in the building that you can hear live laughs from.

On this particular taping, the splendid Maria Bamford sat down with Colbert in, of all places, the audience, as there was no one taking up any of those seats at the time, for as normal of a late night style chat as they can have. Of course, Bamford is her same magical self in chatting with Colbert, but this interview also serves an artifact of a time that is so starkly from our own even though it was a only couple of months ago.

Please enjoy this chat and look back at the not so distant past here.

Bob’s Burgers Renewed for Season 11 at Fox

(via Deadline)

It would seem that the triumvirate animation block on Fox that includes The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Bob’s Burgers will be intact for a long time to come. Announced today, the Emmy award winning award series will be getting its 11th season.

Well, actually, Loren Bouchard and company have been on work on the 11th season already. That has us curious as to whether they’ll have any episodes dealing with the pandemic and/or perhaps all of this will be over by the time 11th season premieres.

In any case, a much deserved congratulations to Bob’s Burgers.

R.I.P. Jerry Stiller, 1927-2020

May 12, 2020
News
jerry stiller

Today, Jerry Stiller passed away at the age of 92. According to son Ben Stiller, Jerry passed away from natural causes. Many of you knew him as Frank Costanza from Seinfeld, but Stiller had a long storied career in film and TV playing pitch perfect opinionated father/authority figures.

Also, Stiller was part of the foundational proto-improv group The Compass Players with wife Anne Meara. Of course, many of the members of The Compass Players went on to form The Second City.

So, take a moment to honor Jerry Stiller’s memory, watch some select episodes of Seinfeld, perhaps peruse his filmography, then enjoy some of his scene-stealing roles (his cameo in Zoolander is our favorite).

I’m sad to say that my father, Jerry Stiller, passed away from natural causes. He was a great dad and grandfather, and the most dedicated husband to Anne for about 62 years. He will be greatly missed. Love you Dad. pic.twitter.com/KyoNsJIBz5

Pick of the Day: Mr. Show Zoomtacular Annual Business Call Event for Charity 5/13

May 12, 2020
News
bob odenkirk, david cross, jay johnston, mr. show, paul f tompkins, scott aukerman, ton kenny

Mr. Show is having a reunion.

That should be enough of a sell for you to buy a ticket to, well, anything that has the seminal, foundational, legendary sketch series from David Cross and Bob Odenkirk gather once again. This Zoom live-stream show will not only have Bob and David, but the storied Mr. Show writers/performers including: Paul F. Tompkins, Scott Aukerman, Tom Kenny, Jill Talley, Jay Johnston, Brian Posehn, Brett Paesel, and John Ennis.

Also, the Mr. Show Zoomtacular Annual Business Call Event for Charity will actually be for a real charity (and not just some meta bit). Proceeds will be going to LIFT, an organization dedicated to specifically breaking the cycle of poverty, which is more crucial than ever in these times.

On top of that, tickets for this special Mr. Show reunion will only cost $12.20 (that includes the service fee), when you’d probably pay at least triple if you were to see this in person. So, with all of that said, support a great cause and see a historic comedy event this Wed. May 13th at 5PM PT/8PM ET and get your tickets here already.

First Look at Patton Oswalt’s Latest Special “I Love Everything”

News

Though the title of Patton Oswalt’s last special, Annihilation, might seem more apropos of our current moment, we’re actually very glad that something created by Patton called I Love Everything is coming out in less than two weeks. Actually, we’re glad that Patton’s latest hour is coming very soon.

Oswalt’s Netflix special I Love Everything is due out on Tues. May 19th and you can get your first glimpse of the special here and see the bit of love that Patton has for wallpaper.

Andy Kindler Finally Releases a Debut Album “Hence the Humor” (and Of Course It’s Great)

May 8, 2020
News
a special thing, andy kindler, ast records, comedy album, debut album, meta comedy, stand up comedy

Over his multi-decade tenure in comedy, Andy Kindler has become comedy’s own venerable Internal Affairs department. Kindler’s roasts of any and all comedy that has become rote has earned him a permanent slot at JFL Montreal where he pokes fun at every corner of the art and business of comedy that he can with his State of the Industry “address”.

Yet, despite such status, Kindler has yet to release a full length comedy album. Well, he had yet to release such a thing until Hence the Humor came out today. Kindler has actually even released a special I Wish I Was Bitter long before this, but, leave it to a freewheeling deconstructionist like Andy to put out a debut album after everything else he has achieved in his storied stand-up career.

To that point, Andy shows off he what he does best with digging himself in holes and then nimbly jumping out them with such mastered ease. Kindler has jokes, then jokes about his own jokes, then asides about why he has to make jokes about said jokes and it all comes so fast, ricocheting from every angle, it’s one hell of a satisfying ride (that we’ve taken several times and we’ll take several times over again).

We wish we didn’t have to wait for Kindler to release a comedy album, but, it was worth the wait (even if you didn’t know you were waiting).

Andy Kindler “Hence the Humor” is out now from AST Records.

Pick of the Day: The Final SNQ 5/10

May 8, 2020
News
ian abramson, saturday night quarantine, sunday night quarantine

Though it is very much a stereotypical thing that one would read in their high school yearbooks, what a crazy ride it has been (for Saturday/Sunday Night Quarantine). Ian Abramson has not only stepped up to the challenge of doing an entire live sketch show, pretty much by himself, but created this otherworldly, devil may care, rebelliously inventive version of a live sketch show including a running gag at the end of each program that always gets us. Two months have passed by and Abramson and company have figured so much out and gotten better from week to week (and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed the process).

With all of that said, as the world attempts to start to open back up, Ian is looking forward to doing other things with more stuff at his disposal. Thus, this Sunday, May 10th at 8:30PM PT/11:30PM ET will be the final, regularly scheduled SNQ over at Ian’s Twitch channel. Ian did comment that he’d be doing something like SNQ again, but just not every weekend.

In any case, this final (for now) show is something to definitely tune into (and very much hope to continue past the pandemic, possibly as it’s own TV show so long as they get to be as daring as they’ve been thus far).

Patton Oswalt Will Again Host Webby Awards, Which Will Be One of the First Major Awards Ceremonies Done Remotely

May 7, 2020
News
patton oswalt, webby awards

(via Deadline)

The annual honors doled out for the Internet, The Webby Awards, will very likely be the first major media awards that will attempt to do a ceremony remotely, calling at WFH: Webbys From Home. They’ve tapped the fantastic Patton Oswalt once again to host, but will have him doing so from the safety of his own home. While there have been plenty of major star-studded benefit live-streams and events while the world has been quarantining, a major awards ceremony has yet to happen like this as far as we know.

Thus, Oswalt and The Webby Awards might be giving a preview of what major awards ceremonies might look like until there’s a COVID-19 vaccine since so many of the many prominent and/or famous folks are that gather when these sorts of things happen in person.

We’ll definitely be curious to see how the normal trappings of such a ceremony will go over a video-conferencing platform including the opening monologue, interstitial sketches, speeches, speeches that go too long, etc. Whatever may come, we have faith that Patton Oswalt will make The Webby Awards work come May 19th when the WFH is slated to take place.

Myq Kaplan, Yet Again, Makes His Best Album Yet “A.K.A.”

May 7, 2020
News
aka, blonde medi, myq kaplan, stand up

The artistic evolution of Myq Kaplan is particularly fascinating to us as Myq has steadily grown and become a deeper, more evolved, conscientious, and even more clever comedian and yet, still maintained his core of playfulness and almost unrivaled ability with wordplay. You can see this throughout all of the albums, specials, and live performances that we’ve personally been in attendance for.

A.K.A. is the latest milestone along Myq’s path and, for our money, his most personal album yet with diving even deeper into his personal life, view on mortality, spiritual realizations, and journey with ayahuasca ceremonies. Though such subject matter might seem like all weighty topics, Kaplan’s bouncy energy, not unlike a pinball speeding around bumpers for pun and callback bonuses, is still very, very much present through every bit and story. In fact, there’s an air of effortlessness to Myq’s delivery of what has to be incredibly honed bits making Kaplan’s exploration of more heady topics pretty damn funny.

A.K.A. is available from Blonde Medicine on May 8th, but you can (and very much should) pre-order it now.

Fleabag, Ramy, and Dickinson Get Peabody Awards Nominations

May 7, 2020
News
dickinson, fleabag, ramy

(via Deadline)

The in person ceremonies are one of the pillars of awards season and when exactly they’ll come back is up in the air. Yet, that doesn’t mean that awards and nominations can’t still be announced.

For instance, the prestigious Peabody Awards just announced the nominees for 2020 covering almost every corner of media despite a date for their awards ceremony being TBD. Within those nominations, we’re thrilled to see that Phoebe Waller-Bridge is continuing to get accolades for her the two groundbreaking seasons of Fleabag with a Peabody nomination. Similarly, Ramy and its cinematic, dramedic look into being Muslim in the modern world via Ramy Youssef definitely belongs in this Peabody Award nomination class. Lastly, for the comedy nominees, Dickinson, Apple TV+‘s wild reimagining of the life of Emily Dickinson also secured a nomination.

Overall, It’s another strong showing from the streaming services and premium cable over the broadcast networks, which is probably a foregone conclusion at most TV awards shows now.

The rest of The Peabody Awards nominees for Entertainment are:

“Chernobyl” HBO Miniseries and SKY in association with Sister Pictures, The Mighty Mint, and Word Games (HBO)

“David Makes Man” Page Fright and Outlier Productions in association with Warner Horizon Scripted Television (OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network)

“Dickinson” Apple / wiip / Anonymous Content / Tuning Fork Productions / Sugar 23 Productions (Apple TV+)

“Fleabag” All3Media International Limited and Amazon Studios (Prime Video)

“Float” Pixar Animation Studios (Disney+)

“Good Omens” BBC Worldwide Limited and Amazon Studios (Prime Video)

“Our Boys” HBO in association with Keshet Media Group and MoviePlus Productions (HBO)

Pick of the Day: Picture This! 5/9

May 7, 2020
News
animation, brandie posey, comedy show, irene tu, live animation, mike l mayfield, paul danke, stand up comedy

One of the LA comedy scene’s most unique and marvelous shows has been, for quite awhile now actually, the live-animated comedy show, Picture This. For those unfamiliar or those so distanced from what happened in the before times, comedians perform and, in real time, animators would draw/sketch/animate based on their set.

We’re so thankful to hear that Picture This is coming to the comedy live-stream realm and, given the way Zoom is set up, all the comedians will likely have a better eye on the animator (as opposed to standing facing away from the screen where the animation is projected). Also, having another line-up including many of the best animators and illustrators in comedy paired with the comedy stylings of Kate Willett, Paul Danke, Irene Tu gets pretty damn close to putting on the show you would have gotten to see in LA or in several places along the comedy festival circuit.

So, look forward to having quite the Saturday afternoon this weekend with a brand spankin’ new edition of Picture This! Go get your tickets for $10 before they sell out!

Jim Gaffigan to Play Former Controversial Toronto Mayor Rob Ford in AMC Series

May 6, 2020
News
amc, jim gaffigan, rob ford

(via Variety)

Jim Gaffigan has certainly had an intriguing turn in his career over the last two years. Ostensibly, for such a long time, Gaffigan’s stand-up made him seem like America’s Dad. Then, in 2018, Gaffigan took a dramatic turn that was very much against type in American Dreamer and has since taken on more movie roles that are a far cry from talking about bacon and his big family.

Gaffigan is now set to play the late Rob Ford, the former Mayor of Toronto who infamously got caught smoking crack on more than one occasion. The role is for an untitled AMC dark comedy, which, it would seem, to be the culmination of two of Gaffigan’s worlds that seem so distant from each other. We’re thoroughly curious as to see Gaffigan as Ford and we really think, based off of the path he’s taken in these last two years, it could be a stand out role for him, perhaps an awards worthy one.

“Have a Good Trip” Promises Great Tripping Stories with Accompanying Trippy Animation

May 6, 2020
News
have a good trip

When it comes to a great story, it’s hard to go wrong with someone’s account of getting high on psychedelics. If you up the ante with comedians, famous musicians and actors, reenactments via animation, and Nick Offerman playing a scientist explaining what’s happening when you trip, you might just have a winning formula on your hands.

That formula is exactly what is contained within the upcoming Netflix doc Have A Good Trip from director Donick Cary and producer Mike Rosenstein. The likes of Sarah Silverman, Paul Scheer, Sting, Nick Kroll, Rob Corddry, Rosie Perez, Adam Scott, Natasha Lyonne, Carrie Fisher, David Cross, Will Forte, Reggie Watts, Anthony Bourdain, and even members of The Grateful Dead will all be recounting their tales of tripping, whether good or bad, and have corresponding animated re-enactments. If you dug Party Legends, we’re betting this would definitely be your jam.

See what all of what Have  Good Trip is exactly about with this trailer, then look for its release on Netflix on Mon. May 11th.

compliment, dave ross, giulia rozzi, josh gondelman, sara schaefer, will miles

Saying things that are nice to other people is one of the most valuable things you can do in times like these. In fact, even a competition of how nice one comedian can boast about someone better than another comedian that they’re going to head-to-head with, boast for boast, can still help in spreading positive vibes during these dire times.

Thus, it’s the perfect time for Kyle Ayers‘ terrific compliment contest Boast Rattle that has run for years and will now get to run once again on Twitch. Attempting to out-compliment to each other will be an amazing line-up that really ought to make a barnburner of niceness including: Josh Gondelman, Sara Schaefer, Dave Ross, Giulia Rozzi, and Will Miles.

This latest edition of Boast Rattle will take place this Saturday, May 9th at 6PM PT/9PM ET on Kyle’s Twitch here.

“Space Force” Teaser Shows Steve Carell as Boss of an Office Again (Though Much More Dangerous Than Dunder Mifflin)

May 5, 2020
News
greg daniels, jane lynch, john malkovich, lisa kudrow, netflix, space force, steve carell

An argument could be made that Steve Carell knows how to play a conflicted boss type better than almost any one just off his performance as Michael Scott on The Office.

With that in mind, it’s very exciting to see Carell in another boss role that’s set in an office in Netflix’s upcoming satirical comedy from Steve Carell and Greg Daniels, Space Force, based on Trump’s real life, newly created branch of the U.S. military. In this office, the stakes are much, much higher than they would be at Dunder Mifflin and Carell isn’t necessarily the main source of the strife so much as it’s emanating from the circumstances he was placed in. Space Force actually seems a little closer in DNA to Veep than The Office, though we’ll see when Space Force premieres given Daniels and Carell being so closely tied to the American version of The Office. Still, Carell returning to being the series lead in a comedy is pretty damn enticing.

See all of this for yourself in Space Force teaser here.

News
best in show, george wallace, live from the archive, patton oswalt, sf sketchfest

SF Sketchfest is in the top, top echelon of comedy festivals around the world with it’s wide, wide variety of comedy and it pretty much spanning three weeks in San Francisco. Enjoy Todd Glass’ Life in Quarantine with “Pandemic Tips with Todd Glass”

May 5, 2020
News
documentary short, pandemic tips, short film, todd glass

Seeing people’s lives in quarantine through Zoom or Instagram Live has been the new normal for almost months now. That amount of time has also been enough to figure out how to safely distance and document someone, perhaps a hysterical comedian, in their life while being “safer at home”.

Director Scott Moran (Robbie, Modern Comedian) got to capture, while maintaining extra safe social distancing and document the life of the one and only Todd Glass in this documentary short film “Pandemic Tips with Todd Glass”. Even while hunkered down, Glass is still clearly himself and can make bits, bits within bits, commentary in between all of that from thin air (or whatever just happens to be around him like donuts or a bull horn). This docu-short is equal parts a delightful-day-in-the-pandemic-life of Todd Glass as well as a great preview of what you can pull off in filming while maintaining proper health and safety measures.

So, enjoy Pandemic Tips with Todd Glass right now right here.

Pick of the Day: Hate Mail 5/9

May 5, 2020
News
bill corbett, kira obolensky, paul f tompkins, rhea seehorn

Thus far in quarantine, there have been stand-up, improv, and sketch shows via live-streaming. Hell, there was an even a day long Star Wars marathon watch along with Connor Ratliff in character as George Lucas.

Now, for a bit of change of pace, how about a comedic play? How about one that would be written by RiffTrax/MST3K‘s Bill Corbett and accomplished playwright Kira Obolensky (Better Call Saul) starring a grand pairing of Rhea Seehorn and the endlessly talented Paul F. Tompkins? Oh, you are? Well, you’re just in luck.

Hate Mail is one such play by Corbett and Obolensky with the stellar cast of Seehorn and Tompkins. Again, you really really lucked out here.

There will be a live-streamed performance on Sat. May 9th benefitting Partners in Health (they provide for communities affected with much-needed medical help and supplies).

Buy tickets here, then tune in at 6PM PT/9PM ET.

Taika Waititi to Direct and Co-Write a Star Wars Movie

May 4, 2020
News
may the fourth be with you, star wars, taika waititi

(via Deadline)

This news almost seems inevitable as Taika Waititi has not only proven his worth in the billion dollar tentpole franchise realm with Thor: Ragnarok (on top of being a beloved indie comedy writer/director), but has also done right by the Star Wars universe with voicing a droid and being the season finale director of The Mandalorian.

So, Waititi will indeed putting his particular golden touch (that always seems to include his beloved off-beat sense of humor) with an entire Star Wars feature film by directing and co-writing with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917). It has yet to be even slightly detailed as to what Taika might be tackling in the Star Wars canon, but we do hope that, whatever it would end up being, that it would be the comedic jewel that Thor: Ragnarok is to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Maybe he’d take a stab at redoing/reviving/rebooting the Star Wars Holiday Special? We have full faith that he’d be able to do something truly magical with that.
