The Simpsons’ Aspect Ratio Fixed at Disney Plus So Sightgags Won’t Be Cut Out

May 21, 2020
News
aspect ratio, disney plus, simpsons

(via Variety)

Cultural touchstone animated comedy The Simpsons began airing when TV and broadcast technology was a far cry from where it is now. Thus, it was created and distributed in the 4:3 aspect ratio without any the thought that visual jokes might get cut out when aspect ratios would change for higher definition TV in the future.

The arrival of The Simpsons at Disney’s streaming service Disney Plus brought up this very issue as almost no new content is in 4:3 and translating the format to 16:9 indeed cropped out many of the visual gags that are signature part of The Simpsons as well as stretched. Today, Disney Plus, after suffering the ire of Simpsons fans, announced that it would be reverting back to the original aspect ratio as to preserve the integrity of The Simpsons back catalog, which lives exclusively at the streaming service now.

As the streaming services amass more and more content, specifically entire classic sitcoms as far back as the 60s, we’ll be curious to see if this will continue to be an issue. If so, will a “horizontal letterbox” become a thing?

We all want any modicum of comfort or reassurance right now in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Even if that comfort comes from someone who is playing the role of your mom as opposed to your actual mother, that’ll do.

Thus, Lane Moore (Tinder Live) made a reassuring mom “hotline” to fill this very crucial need. Please enjoy this sketch here (and maybe you’ll call your real mom because you, perhaps, forgot to do so on Mother’s Day?)

Amy Sedaris Goes Down Memory Lane and Crafts Stick People with Stephen Colbert

News
amy sedaris, colbert, late show

The pure, unfiltered joy of Amy Sedaris is a beacon of hope, not unlike a lighthouse, and it’s a blessing that her splendidly bizarre crafting-ish series At Home with Amy Sedaris is returning to TruTV tonight.

Leading up to the season 3 premiere, Sedaris chatted remotely with her dear old friend who just happens to be the host of The Late Show Stephen Colbert reminiscing about their salad days. The benefit of Sedaris being at home is that she can actually show every memory that she has collected. Also, she gets to show how nifty she can really be at crafting, leaving Colbert a bit in the dust.

Enjoy Sedaris’ whole lovely interview on The Late Show here.

Three Busy Debras Renewed for Season 2 at Adult Swim

The ultra-absurdist feminist satire Three Busy Debras has done so well that it’s getting a second season over at Adult Swim. That means more of the rambunctiously dark comedy from Debra, Debra, and Debra (Sandy Honig, Mitra Jouhari, and Alyssa Stonoha) in their overly bright, overly picturesque neighborhood.

Congrats to all three of the Debras on getting to stay busy and for this absolutely gorgeous renewal announcement card (if that’s not a thing yet, it should be).

In the meantime, you can stream or re-stream their first season over at AdultSwim.com.

Pick of the Day: PUNDERDOME 6/4

May 20, 2020
News
game show, livestream comedy, punderdome, puns

Sheer, silly absurdity is one of the best ways to get a respite from everything else right now. Puns are one of the best ways to get to that sort of absurd fun and PUNDERDOME, as you might guess from the name, is nothing but puns.

Going on for nearly a decade in NYC, PUNDERDOME was started “…by a ‘Rodney Dangerfield impersonator’ and his alleged daughter (Fred and comedian Jo Firestone)”. Now, they’re thankfully doing their first virtual live-stream show, which means it’ll get to expand its reach all over the country (and globe).

This first virtual PUNDERDOME is set for Thu. Jun. 4th at 4PM PT/7PM. RSVP w/donation to get the live-stream link here.

Joe Pera Made an Adult Swim Special by Narrating Relaxing Old Footage and It’s Probably the Thing You Need Right Now

May 19, 2020
News
adult swim, joe pera, relaxing old footage

All of Joe Pera‘s comedy hits a very specific niche of being hysterical through being a very calming, peaceful presence. Very few comedians ever get to such a place making Pera one of the most unique voices in comedy today, whether it be with his stand-up, Joe Pera Talks With You, or whatever else Joe’s involved in.

So, Joe’s in the unique position to make the sort of comedy special that so many folks need right now: one with relaxing stock footage and Joe narrating in his with his down-to-earth angelic persona and homespun delivery.

Thus, Relaxing Old Footage with Joe Pera has born. It’s almost like a DIY comedy guided meditation and truly is very relaxing and silly at the same time.

You can actually (and very, very much should) stream it right here now.

Jimmy Kimmel Live Was All in Honor of Fred Willard Last Night

News

The passing of Fred Willard happened only a few days ago and his absence is still reverberating through the millions and millions of people he brought joy and laughter to.

Certainly, Jimmy Kimmel felt the loss deeply as Willard was a dear friend and a very, very frequent bit player on Jimmy Kimmel Live. So, last night, Kimmel dedicated the entire episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live to the memory of comedy legend Fred Willard.  Kimmel himself personally honored him by recounting some of his favorite memories in working with Fred as well as running down a plethora of characters that he has played for Jimmy over the years.

Watch, reminisce, enjoy (and maybe get a little teary eyed) here.

FYI, Patton Oswalt’s I Love Everything Is Now Streaming on Netflix (and It Should Go on Top of Your Watch List)

May 19, 2020
News
i love everything, netflix, patton oswalt

Take an hour to enjoy the signature whimsy and colorful imagery and niche details that is the comedy of Patton Oswalt with his latest hour special. I Love Everything is another hour carefully crafted by Oswalt and delivers on the aforementioned expectations, but also, for the times that we’re living in, truly takes you away from the terrifying reality that we’re stuck with.

The title itself “I Love Everything” isn’t just a put on. Oswalt goes through so many of his loves whether it be Star Wars, Denny’s, or, of course, his family. There is an explicit positivity running throughout the special and it’s charming without being overbearing. In fact, it makes you think of how much Oswalt’s material over the last few specials have actually been about the things he loves dearly including the late Michelle McNamara or a rose test garden.

Comedy can be derived from celebration of whatever brings you joy. I Love Everything definitely pushes that agenda further than Patton has before and makes for a heartwarming hour of stand-up that’s still incredibly erudite. In the middle of the special Patton emphatically repeats a phrase, “Run at love.” It’s not a punchline or even the whole of a premise, but it’s the spirit of I Love Everything, making for an endearing hour that will at least get us through another week in quarantine.

Patton Oswalt: I Love Everything is now streaming on Netflix.

Pick of the Day: Armando Iannucci and Peter Fincham Have a Drink with the Idler

May 19, 2020
News
armando iannucci, in conversation, the idler

For over a score of years, The Idler has been a go to UK magazine and online education source. In these times of live-streamed everything, they’re having a series of roundtable discussions,  done remotely of course, with various luminaries from several different corners of expertise.

This particular edition of the Drink with The Idler is great interest to us because it features one of the great comedic minds of our time, Armando Iannucci. Iannucci created Veep, The Thick of It, and Avenue 5 and helmed such films as In The Loop and Death of Stalin. He also just happens to be one of the few people who has given a lecture on comedy to a national intelligence agency.

Iannucci will be the guest to the Idler’s Tom Hodgkinson and will be joined by producer Peter Fincham and writer/philosopher Mark Vernon and we’re thoroughly curious what the discussion will bring especially in regards to comedy and perhaps how Armando might touch upon it in future projects.

This edition of A Drink with the Idler is set for Thurs. May 21st 10AM PT. You can join the live-stream for free, so long as you RSVP here.

Please Enjoy Mike Birbiglia’s Commencement Speech for Georgetown’s Class of 2020

May 18, 2020
News
commencement speech, georgetown, mike birbiglia, speech

It’s that time of year where waves of graduations are happening at every level. As far as comedy is concerned, that does usually mean that there is a handful of great commencement speeches that are given by comedians and, essentially, you get to see inspirational stand-up done in a gowns and ceremonial hats. The speeches are meant for the graduates, but there’s a certain joy in still watching such addresses no matter what stage of life you’re in.

The COVID-19 pandemic has obviously made an in-person graduation with hundreds or thousands of people gathering impossible at the moment. Yet, the commencement speeches are still coming through for the classes of 2020 remotely.

Mike Birbiglia just remotely gave such a speech that was pretty damn perfect for the Georgetown University Class of 2020 and the almost unbelievable times that we live in. Birbiglia makes a rather short speech as far as commencement speeches go, but it’s so perfectly worded (as it would be from someone who routinely does celebrated solo shows on Broadway).

Please enjoy it and maybe feel a little more inspired about life going forward here.

The Great Is Every Bit The Follow-Up to “The Favourite” That You’d Want It To Be

May 18, 2020
News
elle fanning, nicholas hoult, the great, tony mcnamara

Hulu’s latest comedy series is probably one of the bolder moves that they’ve pulled this year. That’s saying something considering the unabashed pandemonium and gore-filled dark comedy of another brand new original series of theirs, Solar Opposites, from Rick and Morty co-creator, Justin Roiland.

The Great is a very liberal and highly satirical retelling of the rise of real life historical figure Catherine the Great and it comes to us from the mind of Tony McNamara, the co-writer of one of our personal favorite films from 2018, The Favourite (another adjective-only title, alt-history period piece). Very much like The Favourite, The Great follows a lower classed woman, seeking a higher purpose and power while surrounded by dangerous ineptitude. Actually, the gross incompetence and extravagant waste afforded by monarchy is possibly even more ramped up than it was in The Favourite. Peter III of Russia, played by Nicholas Hoult, is a pure, unfiltered walking id afforded with unchecked power and privilege, often thinking of life in the binary terms of either having or not having sex.

[Spoiler ahead] The liberties, with which McNamara very transparently takes to make The Great “occasionally” true, really play up the absurdity to a quite shocking comedic effect. A bear given as an initial gift to the titular character, Catherine, played by Elle Fanning, ends up being shot to death as a test subject for Peter’s new pistols.

Episodes for The Great run near an hour, which categorically tosses it up between comedy and drama, but those lines, very thankfully are getting very blurred (ex. the romantic drama that’s on the tip of many people’s tongues right now, Normal People, only has half hour episodes). The Great is clearly a great, savage satire and we get to enjoy an hour of it at a time (or more as you’re probably going to binge watch it).

All episodes of The Great are streaming now on Hulu.

Pick of the Day: You Had Me at New York 5/31

It’s more than obvious right now that we need a big change in many of our leaders, especially elected officials. The NYC chapter of the DSA is working hard to make that happen. They’re aiming to have four specific candidates to fill state level offices namely, Jabari Brisport, Phara Forrest, Marcela Mitayanes, and Zohran Mamdani.

To accomplish this, there will be a big telethon-ish variety benefit show called You Had Me at New York featuring a line-up that’s stacked on top of being stacked. Slated for this extravaganza are:

Jaboukie Young-White, Bowen Yang, Sarah Silverman, Julio Torres, Cynthia Nixon, Nina Turner, Philip Agnew, Patti Harrison, Jerry Paper, Larry Owens, Kate Berlant, John Early, Madison McFerrin, Aparna Nancherla, Nina Turner, Balún, Dynasty Handbag, Ruby McCollister, Cole Escola, Micheal Cavadias, Sarah Sherman, Chani Nicholas, Una Osato aka ExHOTic, Other, Jennifer Vanilla, Jeremy & Rajat, Tommy Pico, Joey De Jesus, Kiko Soiree, Simone Norman.

Subversive delights Lorelei Ramirez and Morgan Bassichis are presiding as hosts for the whole event and we can’t imagine that this night will be anything but unforgettable, mesmerizing, and, dare we say, transformative.

You Had Me at New York is set for Sun. May 31st at 3PM PT/6PM ET. Tickets start at $15 and you absolutely should go get tickets right here right now.

R.I.P. Lynn Shelton, 1965-2020

News
lynn shelton

(via Variety)

Today, beloved writer/director Lynn Shelton passed away at the age of 54 due to a blood disorder.

Shelton was a singular voice in cinema that helped push the blending and bending of comedy and drama into what is often referred to as dramedy and highlighting the subgenre of mumblecore. Whether it be Your Sister’s Sister or Humpday, Lynn’s film have quite a subtle, magical touch that invite you in and end up dazzling you with something complex and beautiful and funny and so many other emotional colors.

Walking out of the theater (such a fond type of experience to remember) after watching Your Sister’s Sister, we left in awe and in the best sort of disbelief as we walked out of the theater. At 54, we can only imagine that Shelton plenty of stories left in her back pocket to make into more cinematic gems.

Please add Shelton’s filmography to your ongoing binge list that you’re undoubtedly burning through while in quarantine.

Also, Marc Maron was Shelton’s boyfriend and they were quarantined together in his home up until her passing. There’s a special episode of WTF with Marc Maron that replays her original WTF episode with a deep heartfelt tribute to Lynn from Marc. It’s emotional from the get go, FYI.

Marc pays loving tribute to Lynn Shelton and re-plays their first conversation on today's episode. Thank you to everyone for the love and support. (pic from August 3, 2015)https://t.co/FoHufZYkyL pic.twitter.com/eNiuuOhvsm

Earlier today, comedy legend (truly, a comedy legend label that’s well earned) Fred Willard passed away earlier today at the age of 86.

Best in Show, This Is Spinal Tap, Anchorman, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, The Carol Burnett Show, SNL, The Tonight Show, and Tim & Eric’s Awesome Show, Great Job! are just scratching the surface of Willard’s very long, storied career. Fred Willard has spanned the decades, the genres, the types of comedy and not only maintained his own style of comedy, but always delivered in whatever role he’s playing. In fact, he often has the best moments of an entire movie or episode even though he may not be in the lead role (just see any of the above movies/shows).

Please spend tonight going down a YouTube rabbit hole and binge watching all of his work.

Whenever Nikki Glaser has been the guest on Conan, there’s a conversational spark and an effortless weaving in and out of bits, stories, riffing. It’s all of those elements that comprise what late night talk show interviews are supposed to be.

Glaser and Conan O’Brien’s dynamic is so great that, even while Zooming in quarantine for their interview, they went just over a half hour and maintained the same sort of zip that they have had in studio for years. It’s effectively longer than many half hour stand-up specials.

Please enjoy Nikki and Conan’s full interview here from last night’s Conan at Home.

Insecure Makes a Full Trailer for Their Faux True Crime Docu-Series “Looking for LaToya”

May 15, 2020
News
fake trailer, hbo, insecure, looking for latoya

There are so many ingenious details within Insecure. From hidden Frank Ocean lyrics in the dialogue to all the real locations that get highlighted all around Los Angeles, all the little things really demand repeat viewings of the first three and current fourth season of the series. Another easter egg part of Insecure is the various fictional shows that everyone in Insecure is watching every week. That includes Due North and Kev’yn and they’re equal parts ridiculous and pointed satire about representation on TV.

In the latest season, Insecure pokes fun at the world’s true crime obsession with Looking for LaToya. It’s a true crime docu-series, not unlike some of the ones that you’ve seen on HBO, but it satirically highlights the stark difference when it comes to the color of the victims in a given true crime documentary. You only get to see snippets of Looking for LaToya in scenes, but Insecure was nice enough to put together a whole trailer that is pretty perfect and maybe deserves an actual mini-docu special. Watch and enjoy it  here

Pick of the Day: Comedy for Navajo & Hopi COVID Relief 5/17

May 15, 2020
News
benefit event, brian bahe, comedy show, dan licata, hopi, jes tom, jo firestone, larry owens, navajo, sarah squirm

Though vastly underreported, one of the hardest hit groups by the COVID-19 in America is Native Americans. For many tribes, their reservations are vastly underserved and lacked many essential resources and services without threat of a pandemic including running water, access to medical services, and even a scarcity of grocery stores.

Of the many, many causes you can support, this might be a good one to give your money to. And, as luck we have it, you can specifically support COVID-19 relief for the Navajo Nation and Hopi Reservation via joining in for a splendid evening of live-streamed, innovative comedy.

This Comedy for Navajo & Hopi COVID Relief features some of most dynamic comedians around such as Larry Owens, Jo Firestone, Sarah Squirm, Dan Licata, Jes Tom, and host/event organizer Brian Bahe. A line-up like this will give you a night you will never forget as there’s no real telling what they’ll do, but, whatever it may be, it’s going to be like nothing you’ve seen before.

So, please support the Navajo and Hopi and enjoy what should be one hell of a comedy show for this benefit on Sunday at 5PM PT/8PM ET. Tickets are $10-$30. Please go get them here.

SYFY’s Magical Girl Friendship Squad Has Quite the Cast

May 14, 2020
News
ana gasteyer, anna akana, christine baranski, eric bauza, helen hong, magical girl friendship squad, manny jacinto, matteo lane, quinta brunson, sarah squirm, syfy

(via Deadline)

Before we even get into the series’ premise, for something that was part of a late night animation block on SYFY that’s now getting upgraded into its own short-form series, it has a pretty stacked cast:

The series leads are Quinta Brunson and Anna Akana along with regulars Ana Gasteyer and Matteo Lane.

Recurring characters will be voiced by Christine Baranski, Manny Jacinto, Helen Hong, Eric Bauza, and Sarah Squirm/Sherman.

Guest voice stars will include Jason Mantzoukas, Paget Brewster, Vella Lovell, Jamie Loftus, and Patti Harrison.

Multiple characters will be voiced by Stephanie Sheh (Sailor Moon), Taylor Ortega (Kim Possible) and Daisy Hobbs ( Broadway’s Aladdin)

Pretty swell for a show that only has six 15 minutes episodes ordered, right?

With such a cast, we’re very, very intrigued to seem them in an anime comedy that has “two young women, Alex (Brunson) and Daisy (Akana), who are destined to save the Universe…as soon as they figure out how to pay their rent.”

This could raise the profile of SYFY and their late night Adult-Swim-ish animation block TZGZ where Kelsey Stephanides’ Magical Girl Friendship Squad got its start. It also could further SYFY’s reach into comedy, an area they’ve been seemingly flirting on and off with over the years whether it be with the sci-fi/pop culture series Reactor or the genre bending Happy starring a deranged Christopher Meloni.

We have no doubt that animation will be a big part of new (and old) shows and content that gets made while this pandemic continues on and, as such, we like seeing things like Magical Girl Friendship Squad be part of SYFY’s programming slate.

Kurt Braunohler and Lauren Cook Find a Very Special Therapist for “Quarantine Therapy”

The way that we’ve all been stuck indoors has probably brought many people past the point of going stir-crazy into meltdowns, outbursts, etc. with their families or whomever they’re quarantined with. Therapy has always been important, but it’s an absolutely vital service to have someone to talk in these pandemic times.

That’s why husband/comedian Kurt Braunohler and wife/storyteller Lauren Cook sought out a “very special” therapist to deal with the strain of their relationship and made a short/sketch to “document” how they’re working through the unprecedented stress/anxiety brought about COVID-19.

Several years ago, some real cinema magic got blended with some incredibly clever humor in Cocktails & Dreams. It featured Chris Fairbanks squeezing his way, pretty seamlessly, into various scenes of Cocktail and it was pretty damn great.

Just today, the same folks behind Cocktail & Dreams, released their latest work Freeway to Hell, which is their longest and most ambitious piece yet and part of their Electric Television anthology series. The visit to an alternative cinematic universe is bewitching and sure do have fun messing around in said universe “telling a new story out of recycled parts”.

Please watch and enjoy the comedy pastiche of Freeway to Hell and we’re pretty sure you’ll be transported to some other reality that’s free of a pandemic and only troubled by a B-movie version of the Hell’s Angels.

Arturo Castro’s Alternatino to Return on Quibi

May 13, 2020
News

(via Deadline)

One of Comedy Central’s last sketch series, Alternatino, created by and starring Arturo Castro,  really didn’t get the due it deserved. The sort of pointed, satirical humor that Comedy Central had gotten with Key & Peele was present in Alternatino, but, unfortunately, it didn’t quite catch on the same way as its predecessor.

Thankfully, Quibi has given Arturo Castro a whole second season on their mobile streaming platform. They’re a month into having launched and we’re thankful that they’re still seeking for shows that vary from a lot of typical TV comedy offerings.

Details on when and how production will exactly get underway have yet to be announced. We’re curious as to what that might be as well what potential Alternatino pandemic themed sketches might be.

Pick of the Day: Self-Care with Jo and Aparna 5/21

News
aparna nancherla, jo firestone

Of the crucial things that we all need to do right now, one of them is self-care. Truly, do whatever you need to do to feel OK so long as it’s not hurting others or yourself.

Perhaps, one of those things is enjoying an entire self-care/wellness themed comedy show hosted by two comedians that, for our money, make us feel so at ease. You might be in luck as there is such a show coming up called Self-Care hosted by Jo Firestone and Aparna Nancherla. Jo and Aparna are taking this special evening to really dig in to the finer points and nuances of self-care. They’ll also be joined by a grand line-up of special guests, which, for this week is so, so stacked (they’ve got Guy Branum, Josh Sharp, Christin Chiello thus far).

For something that’s supposed to be a check-in show, Aparna and Jo have plenty up their sleeve it would seem. Proceeds from Self Care with Jo and Aparna go to the staff of The Bell House where this show would have been sans pandemic.

Tickets start at $5 and you very much should tickets for the game ASAP. Buy at ticket right now.
