Take an hour to enjoy the signature whimsy and colorful imagery and niche details that is the comedy of Patton Oswalt with his latest hour special. I Love Everything is another hour carefully crafted by Oswalt and delivers on the aforementioned expectations, but also, for the times that we’re living in, truly takes you away from the terrifying reality that we’re stuck with.
The title itself “I Love Everything” isn’t just a put on. Oswalt goes through so many of his loves whether it be Star Wars, Denny’s, or, of course, his family. There is an explicit positivity running throughout the special and it’s charming without being overbearing. In fact, it makes you think of how much Oswalt’s material over the last few specials have actually been about the things he loves dearly including the late Michelle McNamara or a rose test garden.
Comedy can be derived from celebration of whatever brings you joy. I Love Everything definitely pushes that agenda further than Patton has before and makes for a heartwarming hour of stand-up that’s still incredibly erudite. In the middle of the special Patton emphatically repeats a phrase, “Run at love.” It’s not a punchline or even the whole of a premise, but it’s the spirit of I Love Everything, making for an endearing hour that will at least get us through another week in quarantine.
Patton Oswalt: I Love Everything is now streaming on Netflix.
