Please Get and Enjoy Rhea Butcher’s Latest Album “Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootleg”

February 10, 2021
News
ast records, comedy albums, non binary, rhea butcher, stand up comedy

Brand new stand-up that was recorded with a live audience (that’s pre-pandemic) is in short supply it would seem. It almost seems like an alternate universe whenever you do get to hear or see such a thing, especially if it’s a well-crafted, forward thinking.

Luckily, there’s such an hour that arrived last week from Rhea Butcher in Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootleg is their latest record and the latest release from the always stellar AST Records. Though it may take a second to adjust to hearing people clearly laugh while they’re gathered very close in an dark, enclosed place, it is a refreshing reminder of not only how truly wonderful it was to enjoy stand-up in the before times (and we’ll get back to enjoying stand-up like that at some point in the future), but how great Rhea as a stand-up deftly and joyfully dismantling our ideas of gender as a non-binary person. Butcher’s fills the album with carefully examined observations and polished stories that include facets of their non-binary identity intersecting with being a hillbilly and it is, simply put, a hoot.

With all of that in mind, go get or stream Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootleg here.

My new album “Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootleg” is out TODAY! You can stream it, buy it, or even get a cool pin! Out now on @aspecialthing! https://t.co/yNAbXpXjHu

Pick of the Day: Ground Game LA Winter Fundraiser 12/10

The election is well past us now and Biden is going to be 46th POTUS, which means Trump won’t thankfully be President anymore. In LA, a lot of progressive measures/candidates got voted in. Yet, as you might very well know, there is plenty of more organizing, strategizing, mobilizing that has to be done to actually affect real change.

Ground Game LA has been a great mutual aid LA org that will be crucial going forward in instituting and sustaining said change. Thus, they’re putting on a virtual Winter Fundraiser that will not only include appearances by newly elected LA councilwoman Nithya Raman, but a stacked row of LA comedy favorites such as D’arcy Carden, Ira Madison, Quinta Brunson, Adam Conover, Mal Blum, Nicole Byer, and Rhea Butcher.

Some of the best comedy live-streams have been benefit fundraisers, especially when Nithya has been involved, and this Ground Game LA Winter Fundraiser should be no different. The live-stream is set for Dec. 10th at 7PM PT/10PM ET and donations will be accepted for access (you can even stream for free if you’d like).

Pick of the Day: OHAYO! From Inside a Monster with Atsuko Okatsuka (Live-stream) 8/30

August 26, 2020
News

We were so excited to see a TV version of Let’s Go Atsuko: A Woke Japanese Game Show with Atsuko Okatsuka, but it would seem that COVID-19 has put that on hold like it has pretty much everything on this planet.

Fret not as Atsuko has been plenty busy in quarantine. She has kept Let’s Go Atsuko going in a podcast/web cast format AND she has started a new variety show OHAYO! that will have a live-stream debut this weekend via Dynasty Typewriter. It would be just enough to have Okatsuka to helm the show and have a fine round-up of variety acts, but Atsuko has taken it a fun-loving step further by having broadcasting and hosting the show while in the belly of a furry monster. That is the sort of absurdist break from reality we need while we’re are actually stuck in our houses from plenty of real monsters of viruses, systemic oppression, climate change, etc.

This first OHAYO! this Sun. Aug. 30th at 6PM PT/9PM ET will have a damn good line-up of Yassir Lester, Frankie Quinones, Aparna Nancherla, Frankie Quiñones, Chelsea Peretti, and Ever Mainard.

Tickets are only $5 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

Well, NYC’s renowned Las Culturistas podcast, hosted by Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang,  is finally coming to LA to do a round of their beloved I Don’t Think So, Honey! next month.

For the uninitiated, 50 comedians (you can see above that they’ve assembled many of LA’s best) will get to fiercely rant for one minute on anything in culture kicked off by the eponymous phrase “I don’t think so honey”. Arguably, it raises sh*t-talking to an art form. Do yourself a favor and listen to the live episodes that they’ve done in the NYC in the Las Culturistas archives.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. We highly recommend to go get them here ASAP.

Pick Up Married Couple Cameron Esposito & Rhea Butcher’s Album “Back to Back”

Sure, plenty of comedians talk about being married. There will always be plenty of material to mine from matrimony.

However, very few, if any, actually do stand-up together and release it as an album. Even if both spouses are indeed comedians, the majority of the time, they’d want an entire hour to themselves.

Leave it to one of comedy’s most affable couples Cameron Esposito and Rhea Butcher to delve into pretty much uncharted territory. Together, they give a delightful look into their lives, between two people that happen to be wondrous, introspective stand-up comedians, as a happily married couple in 2017 via their album Back to Back.

Much like their live show/podcast Put Your Hands Together, they start off the hour together, then do separate sets, highlighting their individual comedy stylings and their playful back-and-forth as a duo on stage.

Don’t be surprised to see if this starts a trend of hours from married comedy couples.

You can get Back to Back now off of AST Records with buttons or shirts (or both) or off of iTunes.

Kill Rock Stars continues their stellar catalog of comedy albums that includes Kurt Braunohler, Hari Kondabolu, Cameron Esposito, and starting today, Rhea Butcher.

Butcher’s first album, aptly titled Butcher, offers a great introduction to Rhea as the honest, yet very charming stand-up comedian. Specifically, Rhea gives a great glimpse into her cool life as a lesbian, vegetarian, a baseball enthusiast, and more, but she does so in a way where you’d never think of her just as a funny lesbian, vegetarian, or baseball comedian. You just think she’s a funny comedian that happens to identify with all those things.

So, get Butcher here along with collectible t-shirts and hats off of Kill Rock Stars.

Cameron Esposito and Rhea Butcher, a comedy couple that we’ve been big fans of ever since they moved here to LA, have their brand new scripted series debuting today.

Take My Wife is a really great snapshot (we saw and really enjoyed two episodes earlier this week) of their lives as comedians at different stages in their career, women and LGBTQ people in comedy, and a couple trying to figure out their life together that’s both very personal and charming (i.e. Cameron and Rhea’s wonderful brand of comedy). Also, know that Laura Kightlinger plays a weird neighbor and it’s icing on top of this cake.

The series is now streaming at Seeso, but you can a free preview of the whole first episode, courtesy of Seeso, on YouTube.
