TCB Debriefing 8/3/23: Dicks: The Musical, Rap Sh!t S2, Carmen Christopher, Leslie David Baker Office Spin-Off, Conan Remembers Paul Reubens

August 3, 2023
News
a24, aaron jackson, carmen christopher, conan o'brien, dicks the musical, hbo max, josh sharp, leslie david baker, paul reubens, rap sht, the office

1. In what will be one of A24’s boldest releases yet (except for Everything Everywhere All At Once), and that’s still a high bar to clear, they are doing their first musical and they’re making damn sure it’s rated R. Thanks to the wickedly sharp humor of Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp and the directing talents of Borat’s very own Larry Charles (and managing to have Megan Thee Stallion and Nathan Lee in the same movie), 2023 might be the year with Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Dicks: The Musical. Get your first taste here, then look for its release on Sept. 29th.

2. Due to the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike still not being over, Issa Rae’s latest dramedy, Rap Sh!t, will now be premiering Nov. 9th instead of next week (Deadline). In its place, get ready for way more reality TV on HBO Max that you didn’t ask for.

3. Carmen Christopher who brilliantly blends being dry, absurd, and hysterically aggressive is setting to go on big ol’ North American tour from the end of this month all the way to the end of the year. Do not miss out on his Waverunner tour whether or not it’s close to where you live or not (go get tickets for a city near you here).

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Carmen Christopher (@carmenyescarmen)

4. At one point in time, Leslie David Baker, often known and celebrated as Stanley Hudson from the American version of The Office attempted to crowdfund a spin-off that would center around Stanley. After years of delays (and the double strike), Baker has opted to refund all his backers on Kickstarter (Deadline). When Tinseltown is all back up and running, we wouldn’t be surprised to see this project get revived again, perhaps even without needing to be crowdfunded.

5. Conan O’Brien remembers and pays tribute to Paul Reubens on the latest episode of Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. He also reminds us all that Reubens was amazing even he was not being Pee Wee Herman.

6. One day, a Trump joke will feel as dated as Nixon joke. We only hope that, somehow, America/the world got better enough where either won’t be relevant anymore.

Thank Goodness, Conan O’Brien Is Coming Back to TV Soon with “Conan O’Brien Must Go”

May 17, 2023
News
conan o'brien, hbo max, max, travel show

Conan O’Brien signed off from late night more than a few years ago at this point and, truly, it hasn’t really been the same ever since. The once elder statesman of late night also happened to be on the forefront of redefining what could be done with the late night format with his remotes, traveling abroad, and even playing videos games while not having a clue of what the hell was going on.

Since his hosting duties ended, Conan has amassed a podcast empire under the Team Coco banner, which has been amazing, but it’s not quite the same as having Conan O’Brien out in the field bringing joy to millions with his signature antics.

Thankfully, a rumored travel show at HBO is now coming to fruition as shown by the teaser for the Max Original, Conan O’Brien Must Go, where Conan travels to places all over the globe where his fans reside. That’ll include Noway, Thailand, and, from the looks of the teaser, somewhere in the UK. It’s a more personal, very likely less censored version of Conan Without Borders and we couldn’t be more excited for its arrival.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Conan is more than a natural at this and is probably more deserving of a travel show than the litany of other famous people who have done it over the last few years.

Get your first look at Conan O’Brien Must Go here, then look for it on HBO Max/Max soon (perhaps, pending the strike ending?)

Get Your First Look at the New ‘Clone High’

News
bill lawrence, chris miller, clone high, hbo max, phil lord, teaser

Between the trio of Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Bill Lawrence, there is a veritable comedy empire that spans movie, TV, live action and animation. Since 2002, their paths have led them to critical and commercial darlings including The LEGO Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Afterparty, Scrubs, and Ted Lasso.

Also, in 2002, they all created a cult animated favorite, Clone High, the first in many milestones of their quick-fire, smart off-beat humor. Over 20 years after it first premiered, Lord, Miller, and Lawrence are reviving the series of HBO Max and though reboots/revivals/refreshes/etc. are getting tiring as a commodity, this particular new edition of Clone High looks pretty damn fun (especially with almost all the core elements/characters intact).

After all, if Lord and Miller could make a beloved movie franchise out of LEGO, they certainly can redo their own series with Bill Lawrence.

See for yourself in this first teaser for the new Clone High here, coming to HBO Max soon.

New Other Two, Hacks, and How To with John Wilson, and More Coming in 2023/Are All Safe for Now at HBO Max

News
hbo, hbo max

Since the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, so many properties have gotten canceled (even if they had been previously renewed) including Minx, Love Life, Los Espookys, Made for Love, Gordita Chronicles, and even two Looney Tunes projects. That’s just counting the comedy productions at HBO Max that were nixed amongst several others that were taken off the platform.

A preview of HBO Max’s entire slate in the coming year was just posted today and, effectively, doubles as a notice as to what’s safe from Warner Discovery head David Zaslav’s ax. In this teaser, Barry, Righteous Gemstones, Somebody Somewhere, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, How To with John Wilson, Real Time with Bill Maher, A Black Lady Sketch Show, Rain Dogs, Velma, And Just Like That…, Julia, Doom Patrol, Our Flag Means Death, The Other Two, Rap Sh!t, Harley Quinn, and Hacks are going to premiere, come out with new seasons, etc.

That’s still a healthy offering on HBO Max’s side of things, but we won’t be surprised if things change up again quickly somewhere along the way in 2023 due to any number of circumstances (ratings, trying desperately to cut costs, etc.).

For now, just enjoy what will be on HBO Max in 2023 as shown here.

Get Your First Look at Season 2 of Wonderfully Intersectional Dramedy “Sort Of”

News
bilal baig, hbo max, sort of

We can only hope that this isn’t the first time you’re hearing of Sort Of, the Pakistani-Canadian Non-Binary dramedy just as its second season is set to stream on HBO Max next month.

Co-created and starring Bilal Baig, Sort Of was one of the more engaging binge watches we had in 2021 as there are so many fascinating, genuine, fully nuanced looks into so many identities and subcultures and the comedy and pathos derived from all their intersections.

From the looks of trailer, those intersections are going to have even more intense crossings and we can’t wait to get into it all when season 2 drops on HBO Max on Thurs. Dec. 1st.

Get a taste of all of this and more with season 2 of Sort Of here.

Here Are Your Latest Hints as to What Nathan Fielder Is Up to With ‘The Rehearsal’ (Trailer)

July 6, 2022
News
hbo, hbo max, nathan fielder, the rehearsal, trailer

With Nathan Fielder, like any actually good thriller, there’s always more to his bits/pranks/comedic performance art experiments than what is first presented. Talk of The Rehearsal has been swirling for what feels like years now and HBO just unveil the first official trailer of Fielder supposedly prepping people for real life situations via a painstakingly crafted “real world” rehearsal.

You’ll see Nathan deal with people that seem, like the good unsuspecting folks on Nathan For You, unlike any sort of performer or people connected to comedy in any way, shape, or form. Of course, Nathan has a penchant for setting up something where chaos is inevitable and then following with whatever happens and never breaking whatever his own personal “fourth wall” might be. Again, all enticing, but there absolutely has to be more underneath what is already a wild premise (though we’d expect nothing less from the mind behind Dumb Starbucks).

Thus far, this Rehearsal trailer promises the follow-up from Nathan Fielder that we’ve waited years plus the pandemic for and, thankfully, you’ll only have to wait until next Fri. Jul. 15th on HBO Max for it.

Here’s the First Full Trailer for Issa Rae’s Latest “Rap Sh!t”

If you’re forlorn following the series finale of Insecure, you don’t have to be forlorn for much longer since legitimate entertainment mogul, Issa Rae, is just a few weeks away from putting out her latest series, Rap Sh!t, on HBO Max.

For all the wondrous things that Insecure showed about LA, it seems like Rap Sh!t will do for Miami on top of getting into a perfect balance of comedy and pathos all wrapped up in the rap game in 2022, especially if you’re coming up as anything other than a man. Also, Rae will introduce to a new set of best friends (and new talents Aida Osman and KaMillion, perhaps not unlike Issa and Molly Carter, that will inspire the Internet to form teams?

See for yourself with the first full trailer for Rap Sh!t here, then look for it on HBO Max on Jul. 21st.

Meg Stalter Might Be Getting Her Very Own HBO Max Show “Church Girls”

June 23, 2022
News
church girls, hbo, hbo max, Meg Stalter

(via THR)

Turns out that Meg Stalter’s turn as Kayla in HBO Max’s jewel original series, Hacks, stole so many scenes that HBO Max is giving her a pilot for her very own show.

Called Church Girls, this comedy pilot will be somewhat based off Stalter’s life as a closeted Ohio Christian girl, but undoubtedly have Stalter’s charming chaos woven all throughout it since she is co-writing it.

If you want to get a taste of what Meg does when given her own show, go and binge her wildly fun and demented podcast, Confronting Demons. We hope that sort of energy finds its way into Church Girls, then results in a series order so more of the world can marvel at one of the purest expressions of chaotic good in all of comedy.

News

HBO Max has made a lot of head way since its inception, especially in the realm of dramedy. Hacks has rightfully earned itself acclaim and awards and has been a very shiny part of the HBO Max brand and now, they’re continuing to make way with My Dead Dad from Pedro Correa, which they picked up off the festival circuit.

There’s not a lot of mystery behind the title as the film follows the aftermath of an estranged father’s death and everything a rudderless son has to figure out. Pedro Correa co-wrote and stars in My Dead Dad and has Fabio Frey directing and seems to have come up with that might be a bit bleaker than Beginners, but still sharply funny and heart wrenching all the same.

Take a gander for yourself with the official trailer here, then look for it on HBO Max come Wed. Jun. 1st.

Hacks Season 2 Trailer Looks to Up the Ante

April 26, 2022
News
hacks, hannah einbinder, hbo max, jean smart, season 2, trailer

The first season of Hacks from Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky brought us all, for our money, the best depiction of stand-up in any sort of scripted TV or movie. It also really sunk its teeth into how the goal posts keep moving for women in entertainment, specifically in comedy and how class and privilege underhandedly weave themselves into the tapestry. Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder capture all of these dynamics in their dazzling pairing and made us want season 2 as soon as we finishing speeding through season 1.

Thank goodness that the second season of the instant critical and fan darling is coming very, very soon on Thurs. May 12th on HBO Max and we’ll get to see what famed comedian Deborah Vance (a fictionalized version of many comedians, but very much drawing from comedy legend Joan Rivers) working on a whole new hour on the road while also making a creative pivot to more personal material. As we said in the headline, the trailer for season 2 seems to up the ante from season 1 and it might be even wilder (especially if Megan Stalter gets more screen time).

See for yourself with the season 2 trailer for Hacks here.

Enjoy the Trailer for HBO Max’s 1970s Nude Mag Comedy “The Minx”

March 3, 2022
News
hbo max, jake johnson, ophelia lovibond, the minx

HBO and HBO Max are diving further into their stash of period pieces for 2022. Already, they’ve got The Gilded Age whetting people’s appetites with a showdown of old and new money in Industrial Age America between Christine Baranski and Carrie Coon, but they also have one of the year’s mostly highly anticipated shows in Adam McKay’s Lakers dynasty series Winning Time coming in just a few days.

Also coming down the HBO Max streaming pipeline will be The Minx, a 70s nudie mag comedy that follows a fledgling feminist magazine get itself on the ground by featuring nude men. Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson star in this Ellen Rapoport series along with a lot of comedy scene favorites in Lennon Parham, Oscar Montoya, and Jessica Lowe.

For something that is essentially the hypothetical flip of Playboy minus Hugh Hefner, there seems to be some pretty fun promise for the series. Get a delicious taste of what’s to come with The Minx in the first official trailer here, then look for it to stream on HBO Max on Fri. Mar. 17th.

Tim Robinson & Zach Kanin Might Have a New HBO Max Show with “Computer School”

March 1, 2022
News
computer school, hbo max, tim robinson, zach kanin

(via Variety)

As far as we’re concerned, Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin set a new bar for sketch comedy with only two seasons of I Think You Should Leave proving that they should be further allowed to, perhaps, do as they please. We would sincerely hope that a third season of I Think You Should Leave would be part of that, but, for now, we’ll be ecstatic over the announcement that HBO Max has ordered a pilot from Robinson and Kanin called Computer School.

The premise is very simple, but leaves plenty of room to go the millions of absurd directions that I Think You Should Leave or Detroiters went to. Computer School will follow a newly minted high school graduate and his uncle ending up in the same computer class in the Michigan ‘burbs. That alone should get the wheels turning at all the joyously chaotic possibilities that could arise from that (and probably a lot of Tim Robinson yelling).

With all of that in mind, we hope that a series order gets announced ASAP (especially we don’t know if and when that next season of ITYSL is going to come out on Netflix).

Rhys Darby Is Your New Favorite Pirate in Teaser for “Our Flag Means Death”

January 20, 2022
News
david jenkins, hbo max, leslie jones, our flag means death, rhys darby, taika waititi

Year and years ago, back when Johnny Depp was mostly scandal free, the world fell in love with him as Jack Sparrow, a free-wheeling, fun loving pirate at the heart of the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.

Of course, on this of 2022, things are much different and Depp doesn’t curry the same sort of a favor with his movies (or his band Hollywood Vampires). Fret not though as there is a new fun loving set of pirates on the horizon that could very well take place of the slot that everyone held for the Disney adaptation of their famous ride.

Our Flag Means Death from David Jenkins (People of Earth) will have the very lovable pairing of Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi play real life pirates Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard, respectively. Bonnet, though nowhere near as famous as Blackbeard, ditched his life as an aristocrat for the high seas and a black flag and ought to be a damn good time with Rhys Darby bringing him to life in this series. Also, this would mark Taika’s second time as a famous villain, previously playing Hitler in Jojo Rabbit and now, the infamous Blackbeard.

Get a taste of what all that comedic piracy will be like with this teaser here.

That should be enough for you to make sure you have HBO Max when Our Flag Means Death drops. In case it’s not, know that Leslie Jones will also be showing up in this historical pirate comedy to, of course, regulate.

HBO Dedicating a Doc to Bob Einstein with “The Super Bob Einstein Movie”

December 22, 2021
News
bob einstein, documentary, hbo, hbo max, super bob einstein movie

It would seem, right now, that perhaps HBO and Showtime are going toe-to-toe over in-depth comedy/comedy adjacent docs covering anything from Dick Gregory, Charlie Chaplin, The Comedy Store Cosby, Sesame Street, and more. It shouldn’t be any mystery that we are absolutely here for as many comedy docs as the two premium cablers want to make.

Cue in this latest Bob Einstein documentary at HBO Max.

Physical comedy, especially the sort cut from the cloth of Jackass, might not be the same without Bob Einstein. More famously known as Super Dave Osborne, the always-in-over-his-head daredevil, or Marty Funkhouser on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Einstein’s stature and outlandishness left his stamp on comedy and made him beloved, especially some of the most iconic figures in comedy (even while his brother Albert Brooks had his very own gigantic legacy in comedy).

Thus, Larry David, David Letterman, Steve Martin, Jerry Seinfeld, Susie Essman, and many more came out of the wood work to take part in a documentary special dedicated to the life, times, and memory of Bob Einstein, The Super Bob Einstein Movie.

See what’s to come with the trailer here, then look for The Super Bob Einstein Movie on HBO Max on Tues. Dec. 28th at 9PM on HBO Max.

Search Party Finds Dory Starting a Cult in Season 5 Trailer

December 21, 2021
News

It has been far too long since the last season of Search Party to see what the hell they were going to do for the final season. In truth, any moment longer than the last frame of season 4 felt too long (especially as it seems like we’re going back into some sort of lockdown again due to Omicron).

Thankfully, season 5 is just a few weeks away and this latest look at the fifth and final season is especially juicy and ripe for the daring, often unhinged (in a great way) satire that Search Party has become. After trying to find and rescue various characters over the seasons, it looks as though Dory is lost yet again, but not in the physical sense so much as lost herself in leading a cult (and partnering with a dubious Jeff Goldblum) in the process.

If you thought that John Early’s Elliott pretending to be a Gay Republican conservative news pundit or how Dory was kept captive by a psychopath was wild, it would seem this season has a lot more in store and might just be as crazy as what the real world is (yet thankfully, very fictional).

Get a taste of what’s to come with the season 5 official trailer here, then look for the series to begin streaming on HBO Max come Fri. Jan. 7th.

Get Your First Look at Somebody Somewhere, The Upcoming HBO Bridget Everett Comedy

News

Bridget Everett is and has been such a force of nature of comedy and song that you might ponder how she came to such a point.

Well, HBO’s latest comedy series, Somebody Somewhere, is going to give you the answer as it is very much a show based on Bridget’s life in Kansas before she is the domineering voice that she is today. Bridget’s brashness and penchant for belting out a tune might not necessarily fit nicely and neatly in the middle of the Midwest, but the show promises to show us all how she found her way, her people, and herself.

Get your very first look at Somebody Somewhere here, then look for it to begin streaming on HBO Max on Sun. Jan. 16th.

While some revolutions are often held in the streets and furious skirmishes abound between opposing forces, others are held quietly, orchestrated in the background, though still intent on changing narratives/consciousness/perspectives.

If the children are, as they so often thought of, the future, Sesame Street, not unlike Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, was a revolutionary program that sought out to put a better future on screen so that those very children could live for a better present. The upcoming documentary Street Gang is going behind the scenes to show how Joan Ganz Cooney, Lloyd Morrisett, and Jim Henson all teamed up to make one of the most iconic TV series in history that lives on to this very day.

The Final Season of Search Party Premieres in Jan. 2022 and Has Jeff Goldblum, Kathy Griffin, and John Waters

Search Party is only a couple of months away from unveiling its fifth and final season. That’ll be such a gift when 2022 arrives and the pandemic still isn’t over and new Search Party will be a very welcome respite from that.

Jan. 7th, 2022 will be when HBO Max rolls out new episodes every week and we’ll dive in once again with Dory, Drew, Portia, and Elliot for another round of chaos of desperate searching for something, both literally and figuratively. This time, they’ll be joined by yet another stunning cast of guest stars including the aforementioned Jeff Goldblum, Kathy Griffin, and John Waters, which has our mind furiously pondering what  sort of absurdity G. Charles Rogers and Sarah Violet Bliss convinced them to do on this show (just check the first look images) that has really gone to the most unpredictable places from where it started in season one. Many of our favorite folks in comedy will also be joining in for this swan song of Search Party including  Aparna Nancherla, Angela Trimbur, Grace Kuhlenschmidt, Greta Titelman, Joe Castle Baker, Larry Owens and Michelle Badillo.

The holidays will very likely be more hectic than they have ever been with the world actually, kind of being open and, thankfully, this will be on the other side of it.

Fall 2019 was not necessarily an innocent time, but definitely more innocent that where we have been and where we are now. That just happen to be the time when Danny McBride’s latest series The Righteous Gemstones dropped on HBO and it’s satirizing of televangelist empires was undeniable. A season 2 was pretty much unquestioned, but then COVID-19 did, you know, what it’s still doing.

In fact, that time was so long ago that we almost forgot that there was even going to be a second season the searing dramedy that is Danny’s biggest undertaking thus far. Thankfully, the world of faith for profit is more than ripe for picking apart especially with how much religious gatherings have thrown a wrench into COVID-19 protocols.

Thus, you ought to look forward to second season of The Righteous Gemstones on Jan. 9th on HBO and HBO Max. From the looks of the trailer, they’re going bigger than in season 1. DeVine has his literal own christian army, McBride tries to hug someone through a plastic tarp on TV because of COVID, and Eric Andre is going to be tangling with the Gemstones. See all the wondrous madness for yourself here.

HBO Max & WarnerMedia Access to Highlight Underrepresented Animation with “Animated Shorts Program”

October 5, 2021
News
animated shorts program, animation, diversity initiative, hbo max, warnermedia access

(via Deadline)

Even as far along as we are in 2021, there is still wide gaps in representation when it comes to animation. Sure, there have been things like Persepolis and Tuca & Bertie, but those are more rare gems than a common occurrence.

So, it looks like HBO Max and WarnerMedia Access are looking to fill in some gaps that very much need filling in with their Animated Shorts Program. They’ll offer mentorship with handpicked folks to produce an animated short that’ll get screened on HBO Max.

Hopefully, that’ll lead to more ACTUALLY diverse animated cartoons and the like. In case you didn’t know, there are many animated programs that purport to be diverse via the stories and characters, but they are often not written or created by people from those communities/backgrounds (note the lack of women in writer/animator roles in all of Love Death + Robots).

If you’re interested in the Animated Shorts Program, they’re taking submissions from now until Oct. 24th. Get more details/submit here.

Though it received heaps of praise in its first season on Comedy Central, the road to the second season for The Other Two has been long and winding (and we’re sure a pandemic didn’t help with that either).

The acclaimed series following Drew Tarver and Heléne Yorke as the “other” family members of a successful showbiz family, like many acclaimed comedies that perhaps haven’t gotten their proper due, is now over at HBO Max.

Now having to deal with a superstar younger brother and mother, the long awaited next round of The Other Two is going to, so it would seem, give Molly Shannon another stellar role as a mother who is just simply too much.
