Pick of the Day: Laughing Together: Comedy in the Name of Mental Health with Chris Gethard (near LA) 9/7

August 9, 2023
News
aparna nancherla, chris gethard, Christi Chiello, nicole byer

Chris Gethard, Nicole Byer, Aparna Nancherla, and Christi Chiello are all going to do a “very, very special episode” of a comedy show in the Anaheim Convention Center. Normally, you’d think that with a line-up, the location, the venue, that tickets would at least be $35.

However, Gethard has been tapped to do one of his only LA area shows that’s lined up for awhile by Wellness Together to put on their Laughing Together: Comedy in the Name of Mental Health and, in the spirit of mental health, Chris has made the show free to attend with the option to donate to Wellness Together, if you’d like. What’s important to Gethard here is that he wants to pack out the Anaheim Convention Center can seat up to 7,500 depending on the set-up.

Again, a convention center sized comedy show with Gethard and Byer and Nancherla and Chiello will be free to attend on Thurs. Sept. 7th at 7:30PM, so long as you RSVP here. You didn’t read that wrong. It’s pretty much a free arena show with a comedy gala level line-up.

For all you Angelenos, this will be more than worth the drive out to the OC, especially since you could very well help Wellness Together’s mission of supporting, “teachers, administrators, and social workers fighting the good fight and helping kids maintain their sanity in schools.”

Again, go get your tickets here.

News
daniel webb, desmond chiam, dr ally powell hicks, game show, health and wellness, jenny yang, joel kim booster, los angeles comedy, nicole byer, ron fnches, self help

With the conversation surrounding mental health being more prominent than ever in human history, one should wonder about how much they know about health and wellness (and not just what you’ve seen or heard of on Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop).

Lucky for us all, LA comedy’s Jenny Yang has created a self-help game show, Self Help Me, to test such niche knowledge and really dive into what’s really behind the latest trends in self-help (as well as create content through specialized anxieties). LA comedy scene favorites and wellness experts alike will face off and Yang is assembling quite the field of competitors including Nicole Byer, Joel Kim Booster, Ron Funches, Daniel Webb, Dr. Ally Powell-Hicks, and Desmond Chiam.

This round of Self Help Me is set for Sun. May 21st at 4PM @ Dynasty Typewriter. Tickets are $20 and you really ought to help yourself and go get them here.

One of the best podcasts about dating, comedy or otherwise, is Nicole Byer’s Why Won’t You Date Me? Stop What You’re Doing and Enjoy the Season 2 Trailer of Ziwe

April 14, 2022
News
adam pally, Charlamagne Tha God, Chet Hanks, Emily Ratajkowski, hannibal buress, ilana glazer, Katya Zamolodchikova, late night, mia khalifa, nicole byer, season 2, showtime, trailer, ziwe

For the last few years, few other comedians have ascended quite like Ziwe, writing on one of the best late night shows on the air right now, Desus & Mero, to having the hottest IG Live show during lockdown, Baited with Ziwe, to having her own groundbreaking late night variety talk show, the eponymous Ziwe.

The first season of Ziwe having the keys to her very own talk show was some of the most delectable satire in late night and this next upcoming season (streaming Fri. Apr. 29th on Showtime) is going to one-up that as you can see in this season 2 trailer here.

Ziwe will march on in her iconic mission to be unflinching in picking apart issues and celebrities (and even her own writers). This season will have Baited-ish interviews with Ilana Glazer, Chet Hanks, Nicole Byer, Hannibal Buress, Adam Pally, Charlamagne Tha God, Emily Ratajkowski, Katya Zamolodchikova, and Mia Khalifa (and the Hannibal, Ilana, and Chet ones seem like they’ll be iconic from the get go).

Truly, knowing that season 2 of Ziwe is just around the corner, Apr. 29th suddenly seems so far away and can’t come soon enough.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 72: Jared Goldstein & LA in NYC

August 11, 2021
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
jared goldstein, nicole byer, the white lotus

LA comedy scene favorite, Jared Goldstein, is having a splendid whirlwind of a time in NYC, doing all the shows, taping a Comedy Central Featuring set, and even running into comics he used to be intimidated by (when starting in LA) that now live and grind in NYC. Don’t worry, there are no LA vs. NYC jokes here (that’s so very early 2000s).

That said, Jared and TCB’s Jake Kroeger speed through this ep. on “New York minutes” and run through Jared’s extended stay in NYC and lots of comedy headlines including Nicole Byer’s first hour Netflix special, The White Lotus getting renewed for season 2, and more.

News
comedy festival, debra digiovanni, jfl, jim jefferies, nicole byer, nikki glaser, ron funches, The Goddamn Comedy Jam, tom segura

As the prospect of travel to more than wherever you can drive in your car becomes better and better, we fully expect to see comedy festivals pop up in some pretty exotic locales. Just For Laughs is already leading the way by taking themselves all the way on down from Canada to the sunny beaches of Cancún, Mexico.

From Nov. 3rd-7th, Jim Jefferies, Nicole Byer, Tom Segura, Nikki Glaser, Ron Funches, Debra DiGiovanni, The Goddamn Comedy Jam, and more will be taking over to do comedy shows for what we normally thought of just as spring break destination. In addition to shows, there will be a whole package that provides 5-star resort accommodations, parties of all kinds, and other JFL exclusive events.

The early bird package prices for everything are starting at $859, but note that you will be fully refunded if the festivities get rescheduled due to COVID-19 (as that pesky pandemic is still not over).

Go get more details/book a package here.

For comedy, the special will be focusingn on late night disruptors Desus & Mero, beloved multi-hyphenate Nicole Byer, and upstart icon Ziwe Fumudoh, all four of which are some of our absolute favorites in comedy and should be more touted and awarded and hired than they currently are (which is quite a bit).

Pick of the Day: Why Won’t You Date Me? with Nicole Byer 2/12

February 2, 2021
News
live podcast, nicole byer, on location live, team coco, why won't you date me

Combining how separated we all literally are and the impending arrival of 2021’s Valentine’s Day, it’s hard for us to think of a better comedy show to check out than the latest live-stream edition of Why Won’t You Date Me? with Nicole Byer.

Fresh off from a move to Team Coco, one of the best comedy/dating/sex/relationship/interview podcasts around has done just a handful of live-streams as lockdown persists and has this latest one set up for Fri. Feb. 12th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Also, you’ll have time to catch after the stream if you can’t tune in right then and there.

Tickets for this Valentine’s edition of Why Won’t You Date Me? with Nicole Byer are only $10.50 and you can and very much should get them here.

Why Won’t You Date Me? with Nicole Byer Is Moving to Team Coco

January 12, 2021
News
nicole byer, podcast, team coco, why won't you date me

(via Deadline)

As the burgeoning world of podcasts continues to burgeon, it’s it certainly worth noting which of the biggest, best, most popular podcasts are and where they end up possibly moving (or, in the case of some like My Favorite Murder and Last Podcast on the Left, get to create their very own podcast network).

We’ve been saying it for years and we stand by it that Why Won’t You Date Me? with Nicole Byer is one of the absolute best podcasts out there whether you’re thinking about it in regards to comedy, dating, or podcasts in general. As WWYDM has been such a stellar podcast for years now, Conan O’Brien’s Team Coco has set its sights on and went ahead acquired it for their in-house podcast network. This takes WWYDM from Headgum over to Team Coco along with its deep, hysterical episode archive.

This also, very likely, means that Conan O’Brien will be a guest and that ought to be a WWYDM ep. for the ages.

Byer’s candor, penchant for sex positivity to the nth degree, and overall undeniable hilariousness has been the perfect mix in Byer’s intimate chats with her guests about their and her love lives.

If you’re looking for something to look forward to in 2021, let it be a very special live-stream edition of Why Won’t You Date Me? with Nicole Byer that’s set for Thurs. Pick of the Day: Ground Game LA Winter Fundraiser 12/10

December 2, 2020
News
adam conover, comedy livestream, d'arcy carden, fatima iobal zubair, fundraiser, ground game la, Ira Madison, konstantine anthony, Mal Blum, nicole byer, nithya raman, quinta brunson, rhea butcher

The election is well past us now and Biden is going to be 46th POTUS, which means Trump won’t thankfully be President anymore. In LA, a lot of progressive measures/candidates got voted in. Yet, as you might very well know, there is plenty of more organizing, strategizing, mobilizing that has to be done to actually affect real change.

Ground Game LA has been a great mutual aid LA org that will be crucial going forward in instituting and sustaining said change. Thus, they’re putting on a virtual Winter Fundraiser that will not only include appearances by newly elected LA councilwoman Nithya Raman, but a stacked row of LA comedy favorites such as D’arcy Carden, Ira Madison, Quinta Brunson, Adam Conover, Mal Blum, Nicole Byer, and Rhea Butcher.

Some of the best comedy live-streams have been benefit fundraisers, especially when Nithya has been involved, and this Ground Game LA Winter Fundraiser should be no different. The live-stream is set for Dec. 10th at 7PM PT/10PM ET and donations will be accepted for access (you can even stream for free if you’d like).

Get more details and access here.

Pick of the Day: 6th Annual High & Mighty Thanksgiving Eve Power Hour 11/25

November 23, 2020
News
betsy sodaro, high and mighty, jon gabrus, mano agapion, mike mitchell, nick wiger, nicole byer, okra project, power hour

The annual tradition of Jon Gabrus doing a power hour live on stage with friends is one of the few things that we look forward to Thanksgiving week. Normally, we’d get to see the madness take place on stage and secrets and wild things run amok during the whole time.

As a stage show can’t happen in a proper venue, Gabrus will be doing this year’s High & Mighty Thanksgiving Eve Power Hour virtually and we have no doubt they’ll revel in the chaos of taking a shot of beer every minute for an hour just as much as they have in years past. Joining Gabrus for this Sixth Annual (and first virtual) Power Hour will be Mano Agapion (Drag Her!), Nicole Byer (Why Won’t You Date Me?), Mike Mitchell (Doughboys), Betsy Sodaro (A Funny Feeling), and Nick Wiger (Doughboys).

Also, this year’s show will be donating proceeds to a great org, The Okra Project.

High & Mighty Thanksgiving Eve Power Hour is set for Wed. Nov. 25th at 6PM PT/9PM ET (you’ll be able to watch the live-stream up until Sun. 11/29 at midnight). Tickets are $10 and you can and very much should get them here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 25: Lisa Curry & Coming Oh So Close

News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
adam sandler, beth stelling, borat 2, guy branum, john cena, katie hughes, last week tonight, lisa curry, nicole byer, ryan hamilton, taylor tomlinson, wipeout

It takes a special sort of comedian to release their very first hour of comedy during a global pandemic after going through recording it far from home in the UK. Lisa Curry is that special sort of comedian on top of having a really great penchant for dark humor. Curry zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger about taking such a leap as well as Curry coming very, very close to so many big breaks, but coming up short or being left in the dark as to what happened until she reads her fate in the trades. That even includes coming close to plenty of this week’s news items covering Last Week Tonight‘s renewal, Nicole Byer and John Cena hosting the newest Wipeout, Borat 2, and Guy Branum getting to develop his very own scripted series at NBC.

Follow Lisa Curry at LisaCurry.net and please get her brand new debut album Alive for a While.

JFL Montreal Announces Line-Up For Their First Online Edition

September 9, 2020
News
amber ruffin, hannah gadsby, jfl montreal, just for laughs, kenya barris, nicole byer

JFL Montreal, one of the biggest, longest running comedy  festivals in the world, is pushing forward with having a festival of some kind this year. It won’t be quite the limited capacity, mask-wearing attempt at a festival that the Venice Film Festival just had, but JFL has assembled a handful of big stars including Hannah Gadsby, Nicole Byer, Kenya Barris, Amber Ruffin, and Andy Kindler for what will be the very first online JFL Montreal Comedy Festival. Oh yeah, it also will be free.

It’s a much, much more trim version of what is normally just over a week of the main festivities, but a showcase of Variety’s Top 10 Comics to Watch will still be happening and the “Creators” category of New Faces will be featured (doing live stand-up or sketch over Zoom probably wasn’t the best way to feature New Faces). Andy Kindler on the line-up most certainly means that there will be another annual State of the Industry Address from Kindler (one of JFL’s biggest highlights for our money) and what Andy has to say about the state of comedy this year will very likely be even more unforgettable than it normally is.

This virtual edition of JFL Montreal will be streaming for FREE on Fri. Oct. 9th & Sat. Oct. 10th right here. No need to RSVP or get one of several different festival badges.

Nicole Byer to Host 2020 Creative Arts Emmys Over 5 Nights

August 27, 2020
News
creative arts emmys, emmys, host, nicole byer

The world would be a better place if Nicole Byer was hosting a lot of it.

Thankfully, that is happening. Already, she has a veritable empire of podcasts that she hosts/has hosted and she is rightfully earned an Emmy nomination for hosting Nailed It! on Netflix.

Now, she is being tapped to host The Creative Arts Emmys (i.e. the Emmys ceremony for the dozens of technical and niche categories you don’t ever get to see on TV), which is opting for a virtual experience to be streamed on Emmys.com over 5 nights. Since it’s streaming online, we can only hope that Byer’s let loose to do she wants and crack whatever joke, especially if it’s particularly blue, throughout her hosting run. Hopefully, this will lead to countless other awards hosting gigs for Nicole since, as stated above, the world would be a better place for it.

Catch Nicole Byer hosting The Creative Arts Emmys starting Mon. Sept. 14th-Sat. Sept. 19th at Emmys.com.

Nicole Byer’s Self-Help Book #VeryFat #VeryBrave Out Now

June 5, 2020
News
memoir, nicole byer

Nicole Byer is so many things between comedy, acting, podcasting, and writing that all add up to being a shining beacon in a godforsaken world for being true to herself as she could possibly be.

So, a memoir #VeryFat #VeryBrave from Byer is a very welcome gift to have bestowed on us all this week. Throughout the book, Nicole encourages both complete acceptance and love of your body and also shows how to rock a bikini as a fat person. Byer’s marvelously unapologetic sense of humor makes it so this should be the next book you should get.

You can and very much should go get Nicole’s self-help book #VeryFat #VeryBrave at any number of booksellers here. Also, if you’d like to support black owned bookstores at this time, here’s a list of them.

Pick of the Day: Nicole Byer + Sasheer Zamata: #VERYFAT #VERYBRAVE 6/4

June 1, 2020
News
book release, nicole byer, sasheer zamata

It’s undeniable that one of the funniest comedians working today is Nicole Byer. Between her stand-up, her TV shows, her podcast empire, and more, Byer is truly fearless in her comedy in a way that’s both hysterical, raw, and, honestly, beautiful.

Her upcoming memoir,#VERYFAT #VERYBRAVE, will be her latest work that you should get into. The book “…unpacks the bizarre notion that it takes courage to be a fat woman,” through her own experiences, especially when it comes to wearing a bikini.

She’s doing a virtual launch of #VERYFAT #VERYBRAVE on Zoom with her Best Friends co-host Sasheer Zamata that’ll include discussion and a Q&A this Thurs. Jun. 4th at 4PM PT.

Tickets are $24.98 and include a purchase of the book. Go get ’em here.

Well, stand-up shows doesn’t get much cooler than this.

In a loft downtown with baked goods and vintage threads for you to get obsessed with, a fantastic pairing of Giulia Rozzi and Jenny Zigrino will host a line-up of our favorites of in the scene, Byer, Garcia, Jones, and Cooperman, for what might be the most stylish stand-up show, Well-Dressed Comedy, in LA in recent memory.

So, make a note for Wed. Jun. 12th to have at least $5 if not more for treats and a cool new outfit.

While Guy Fieri is undeniably loved by many, it would seem Nicole Byer is more dedicated than most to eat at a dining establishment of his.

Byer described just how far she went in order to do so on last night’s Late Night with Seth Meyers. Enjoy it here.

Well, actually, stay in town and go get tickets that are going from $35-$75 here. The Montalban is a pretty sizable venue, but you might want to get in on this before it sells out.
