And Here Are Your Comedy Nominees for 2021 Primetime Emmys

July 13, 2021
News
2021, bowen yang, emmys, hacks, jessica walter, nominations, snl, ted lasso

As you might have seen throughout your socials, the nominations for this year’s Primetime Emmys were announced this morning complete with plenty of welcome surprises, infuriating snubs, and dozens upon dozens of categories that might be overwhelming to look through. So, we’ve got all the nominees of main comedy categories listed below between comedy series, actor and actress nominations, writing, etc.

Overall…
-Ted Lasso continues to be people’s quarantine comfort food as they got a record amount of nominations for its first season.
-Hacks, also in its first celebrated season, got several nods including a first time nomination for co-star Hannah Einbinder and Carl Clemon-Hopkins.
-Bowen Yang, who is very likely several people’s favorite cast member on SNL right now, got his very own nomination.
-The Amber Ruffin Show also marked its very first nomination in writing.
-Jessica Walter posthumously got nominated for her voice work on Archer
-Conan
got nominated as his final season ran this year.
-For some reason, Cobra Kai is now a comedy and Emily in Paris got another nomination despite previous uproars in past awards shows
-Despite the pandemic throwing off everyone’s schedule, What We Do In The Shadows, Insecure, and Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are left out of the running.
-Also, even though it just premiered, I Think You Should Leave season 2 should just be shoehorned into the competition right now.

Here’s the entire list of Primetime Emmys nominations.

Here are the Comedy Nominees for 72nd Primetime Emmys

July 28, 2020
News
a black lady sketch show, comedy nominees, emmys, insecure, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, marvelous mrs maisel, nicole byer, nominations, primetime emmys, ramy, robot chicken, schitts creek, snl, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, what we do in the shadows

For the 72nd Primetime Emmys, many of the perennial favorites got their nominations like Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, SNL, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Dave Chappelle Schitt’s Creek, Hannah Gadsby in the categories they perennially occupy.

However, there are a few pleasant surprises (there always a few) in this year’s Emmys nominations including A Black Lady Sketch Show, Ramy, Robot Chicken, What We Do in the Shadows, Nicole Byer as host of Nailed It!, and FX’s Cake. What We Do In The Shadows and Insecure actually very much earned their spots in the Outstanding Comedy Series category as they have probably been the two most beloved current/new comedies during the entire pandemic.

Voting will run through the end of next month and the winners will be announced on Sept. 20th by Jimmy Kimmel. We’re going to guess that will be not the normal Emmys telecast chock full of celebrities dressed to the nines.

Take a gander at all the comedy nominees below. Get a full list of all the nominees for the 72nd Primetime Emmys here via Deadline.

Both JoJo Rabbit and Booksmart Score Writers Guild Awards Nominations

Thus far this award season, it appeared as though, yet again, comedy films weren’t going to get much of a nod (as is always sort of the case).

JoJo Rabbit might be an exception to this notion for how much critical acclaim on all fronts that it has been getting, but Booksmart garnering a Writers Guild nomination is a very pleasant surprise. Booksmart should have been a bigger hit and we can only hope that it lives on to be enjoyed again and again over the years for how sincerely refreshing and satisfying and hopeful it was.

Truly, we love both films (they both made our 100 Best of 2019 list) and hope that they fare as well as they can against the likes of Parasite, Joker, Knives Out, and more.

The Favourite Scores a Lot of Nominations for 2019 Golden Globes

December 7, 2018
Uncategorized
2019, golden globes, nominations

Despite the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the governing body behind The Golden Globes, continuing to wrongly lump musicals and comedy into the same category (as well as making highly debatable distinctions as to what counts for a comedy such as The Martian), it still remains of one of the major awards leading into the awards season (the actual awards will be presented on Jan. 6th with Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg co-hosting) and thus worth noting.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite, rightfully so in our opinion, got plenty of love in many of the categories including Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz being nominated in the very same category. We also dug Eighth Grade, Isle of Dogs, Old Man and the Gun, and The Good Place getting nominations here. Adam McKay’s politically charged dramedy-biopic of Dick Cheney Vice scored more than a couple of noms, which bodes well for its upcoming Christmas release and definitely peaks our interest a little more.

That being said, we’re willing to bet that one (if not many) of your favorite TV comedies got snubbed.

Deadpool Nominated for a WGA Award

Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick’s adapted screenplay for Deadpool has gotten a WGA nomination next to the likes of the normal, critically acclaimed dramatic fare such as Arrival, Fences, and Moonlight.

For an R-rated, big budget action comedy to get recognized here is kind of a big deal as action, comedy, and a R-rating on top of either of those usually don’t garner attention from the various academies and guilds of the entertainment industry.

Try thinking of the last time an R-rated comedy got a nomination for this kind of award. Keep in mind that Armando Iannucci’s In The Loop, which made waves during its awards season, was ‘Not Rated’. Perhaps, this will pave the way for more comedy, if it is award worthy, to get nominated in the years to come.

Rachel Bloom, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Anthony Anderson, black-ish
Gael Garcia Bernal, Mozart in the Jungle
Donald Glover, Atlanta
Nick Nolte, Graves
Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent

As always with the HFPA and The Golden Globes, there are some out-of-left-field surprises with their nominations like War Dogs or Graves, which didn’t gain nearly as much praise as perennial prestige comedies like Transparent or Veep.

Still, Deadpool is showing strong with a Critics Choice win last night and nominations here today. That’s especially impressive considering it’s a movie that’s an R-Rated action comedy, one of the most underrepresented types of movies when it comes to awards season. Also, Atlanta continues to an impressive freshman run and bodes well for FX.

Though a potential dark horse late comer, keep an eye out for Mike Mills’ 20th Century Women, which  one of favorite movies of the year.

David Cross, Amy Schumer, Tig Notaro, Patton Oswalt, Carol Burnett, and Margaret Cho Get Grammy Nominations

BEST COMEDY ALBUM
…America…Great… — David Cross
American Myth — Margaret Cho
Boysih Girl Interrupted — Tig Notaro
Live At The Apollo — Amy Schumer
Talking For Clapping — Patton Oswalt

BEST SPOKEN WORD ALBUM (Includes Poetry, Audio Books & Storytelling):
The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo — Amy Schumer
In Such Good Company: Eleven Years Of Laughter, Mayhem, And Fun In The Sandbox — Carol Burnett
M Train — Patti Smith
Under The Big Black Sun: A Personal History Of L.A.Punk (John Doe With Tom DeSavia)— (Various Artists)
Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink — Elvis Costello

It’s almost expected to see Tig Notaro, Patton Oswalt, and Amy Schumer here in this year’s Grammy nominations for comedy. David Cross getting a nod for his album that specifically stands against Trump and one for Carol Burnett’s audio book are also good, big name choices.

Still, given how wide the field is in the Grammys, we wonder if there would ever be room for, let’s say, Best First Comedy Album or Best Podcast, etc. etc. to allow room for works from critically acclaimed comedians that are just on the brink of breaking out into the national spotlight.

Annie Awards Nominations Announced and Zootopia Leads Big Time

Zootopia scored 11 nominations to be exact.

The Annie Awards, the big time, awards ceremony honoring the highest achievement in animation just announced this year’s nominations and Zootopia has emerged as a clear favorite.

On top of that, the nods to more grown-up fare like The Simpsons, BoJack Horseman and Venture Bros are nice to see. All ages shows like Adventure Time and Finding Dory, perhaps unsurprisingly, gained nominations as well.

We’ll see if Zootopia can make good on its 11 nominations when the winners are announced February 4th.

The entire list of Annie Awards nominations are listed at the link above.

The Big Short, though debatable as to whether it’s a comedy, is getting plenty of love this awards season as a comedy. That being said, Paul Feig’s Spy, Stephen Falk’s You’re The Worst, Trainwreck with Amy Schumer, Aziz Ansari’s Master of None, Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s BoJack Horseman, and Will Forte’s Last Man on Earth, getting nods from The Critics Choice are much appreciated.

As you’d expect, Transparent from Jill Soloway continues to be an awards nominations powerhouse, but it’s also a pleasant surprise to see Rachel Bloom for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan’s Catastrophe, the movie Dope, and The Late Late Show with James Corden.

“Birdman” and “Grand Budapest Hotel” Continue To Get Nominated For Almost Everything

The nominations for both The Oscars and The DGA Awards were just recently released and while it isn’t coming as much of a surprise, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and The Grand Budapest Hotel have kept on sweeping up honors left and right this awards season.

Already, both films have scored wins at The Golden Globes and have garnered nominations at The SAG Awards.

For The Oscars, Birdman is nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Cinematography, Best Directing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Best Original Screenplay.

The Grand Budapest Hotel racked up Best Picture, Best Score, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Directing, and Best Original Screenplay.

On top of that, Wes Anderson and Alejandro González Iñáritu both were nominated by The DGA Awards for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film.

That’s 9 Oscar nominations each for the pair, which, above all else, should be noteworthy because they both are comedies, especially in contrast to the rest of the nominated fare.  Traditionally, comedy goes generally overlooked during awards season unless it’s in its own category, especially at The Oscars.

Maybe this genre glass ceiling has been broken with two comedy powerhouse frontrunners? We certainly hope so.

“Grand Budapest Hotel” and “Guardians of The Galaxy” Get Writers Guild Awards Nominations

Of all the nominations that have been announced in this current awards season, it seems the Writers Guild Awards has gone a somewhat different and refreshing direction. Already, they have Transparent, Last Week Tonight, and Inside Amy Schumer nominated for TV.

Grand Budapest Hotel is an awards front runner and gets a nod here, but Guardians of The Galaxy, a big budget studio comic book space adventure with plenty of comedy injected throughout, also gained a nomination from the WGA for Adapted Screenplay today.

Guardians of The Galaxy isn’t nominated in such a category in any other awards so far. Maybe, that will change now and other movies that are more readily described as “fun” will be taken more seriously by various academies and associations?

Critics’ Choice Awards Also Have Birdman and Grand Budapest Hotel Racking Up Nominations

Birdman and Grand Budapest Hotel have already been gathering up a lot of nominations at The Golden Globes and The SAG Awards and the 20th Annual Critics Choice Awards are no different. Between the two, they stacked 24 nominations in various categories, Birdman with 13 and Grand Budapest Hotel with 11.

There’s a weird genre fragmentation at The Critics’ Choice Awards that has gotten both films nominated for Best Picture and Best Comedy. Top Five, 22 Jump Street, St. Vincent, Chef, Neighbors, Obvious Child, The Skeleton Twins, Edge of Tomorrow, Inherent Vice, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Lego Movie also all got nominations in Comedy and Action categories.

Despite how continually odd it is that awards put drama above everything, Birdman and Grand Budapest Hotel give some hope that there might be happening less and less in the future.

The Critics Choice Awards will be televised live at A&E 6PM PST on Jan. 15th and hosted by Michael Strahan.

“Birdman” and “Obvious Child” Get Spirit Award Nominations

The awards season for movies are coming closer with plenty of speculation as to who the front runners are. Well, some suspicions and pull quotes have been confirmed with Film Independent’s Spirit Awards announced the nominees for 2015.

If you’ve been to the theaters lately, you’ll probably guess that the tone of the awards fare is pretty bleak, but Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) garnered six Spirit Award nominations including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Actor (Michael Keaton), Best Supporting Actor (Edward Norton), Best Supporting Actress (Emma Stone), and Best Cinematographer (Emmanuel Lubezki).

The wonderful Jenny Slate also got a Best Actress nomination for her great performance in Obvious Child.

Everything else nominated was dramatic, gritty, heart wrenching, etc.

2014 Golden Globes Nominations for Comedy Includes ‘Veep’, But Also ‘Before Midnight’

The HFPA just announced the nominations for next year’s Golden Globes Awards that, for comedy, includes Her, Wolf of Wall Street, Girls, New Girl, Modern Family, Inside Llewyn Davis, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Enough Said, Frances Ha, Veep, Parks and Recreation, and more.

Some of those nominees blur the lines for comedy/drama, but it’s even more surprising that decidedly more dramatic leaning films like American Hustle, Before Midnight, and August: Osage County got nominated in the  comedy or musical category.

What’s with Lake Bell’s In a World, a straight comedy, not getting any recognition versus films that are mostly dramatic?

Dramedy Reigns in This Year’s Spirit Awards Nominations

While there absolutely is a bias towards drama with The Oscars, comedy has a little more of a chance with The Spirit Awards as many indie comedies tend to be better received critically.

Even with that in mind, this year’s Spirit Awards definitely skewed towards dramas with lots of hilarious moments, comedies with lots of tension (and the two outright comedies in the wonderful In A World and Computer Chess) including Nebraska, Spectacular Now, Blue Jasmine, Inside Llewyn Davis, Frances Ha, Crystal Fairy, , Afternoon Delight, and Don Jon.

We’re not suggesting that’s necessarily a bad thing (we’ve seen the majority of these films and they were all pretty great), but it’s definitely a trend.
