Pick of the Day: A Sports Show For People Who Don’t Know About Sports (in LA) 4/17

April 2, 2024
News
los angeles comedy, megan gailey, sports

March Madness, for those in the know, extends past the actual calendar dates of March, but for those not in the know, you might be wondering why you have to keep hearing about “bracketology” for several more days.

In either case, one Megan Gailey, marvelous comedian and sports expert, is to bring both sides together with her very special show A Sports Show For People Who Don’t Know About Sports that will enlighten the sports-averse (on top of showing you how inherently funny the rules and culture of sports can be). You might not like the word “bracketology” after this, but you’ll be able to laugh at people’s ridiculous brackets being busted late into March.

A Sports Show For People Who Don’t Know About Sports is set for Wed. Apr. 17th at 9:30PM at Lyric Hyperion. Tickets are only $15 right now and you best go get them right now right here.

Megan Gailey and Emily Heller Sports Show Comedy in the Works at Amazon

July 29, 2022
News

(via Deadline)

One aspect of sports that comedy hasn’t touched too much on is the actual reporting of it. Eons ago, there was the wondrous meta web series Mayne Street with Kenny Mayne, featuring the one and only Jon Glaser as a go-to cameraman.

Megan Gailey and Emily Heller are putting together a series for Amazon that will satirize sports coverage between a die hard female sports fan and a far-past-his-prime, former pro basketball player that have “history”. There’s no word as to any sort of cast at this point, but we have hard time imagining a more perfect role for the hysterical Megan Gailey than rowdy-fan-turned-sports-reporter. In fact, that might be the best way for America to fall in love with Gailey if they haven’t done so already from her set on Conan or her album My Dad Paid For This.

Also, if you love Barry at all, you’ve been enjoying some of the writing of the brilliant Emily Heller and this combo of her and Gailey ought to, we hope, equal a series order from Amazon sooner rather than later.

Will Smith’s Stand-Up Series “This Joka” Will Actually Get to See the Light of Day

Well before COVID-19, there was a weekend where many of LA and NYC’s very best comedians that you needed to know were swept up to Vegas to tape a special stand-up comedy series that was entirely put up by the one and only Will Smith. Called This Joka, it was going to be a new introduction to many of our absolute favorite comedians that we personally try to highlight whenever we can here at TCB.

So, not only did COVID-19 put a pause, interrupt the scheduling of, or even outright shut down so much comedy, but This Joka temporarily fell victim to originally be at the ill-fated short form streaming service, Quibi. When the news broke that Quibi was closing up shop, This Joka was still on the docket to premiere and we were worried that this whole series would never get to be seen by you, us, and everyone else that needs to see the future of stand-up comedy.

Thankfully, Roku bought up Quibi’s library including This Joka and we will all get treated to see Will Smith’s curated stand-up series that features Baron Vaughn, Sam Tallent, Punkie Johnson, Rosebud Baker, Clayton English, Chris Estrada, David Gborie, Sean Patton, Megan Gailey, Rell Battle, Shane Torres, Vanessa Gonzalez, Daphinque Springs, Martin Urbano, Jackie Fabulous, and Christi Chiello.

Many have since gone to new heights in their career by the way. Estrada has his own Hulu series in the works, Rosebud got her own special, and Sam became an acclaimed author.

Come Fri. Mar. 4th, you’ll be able to stream This Joka for free on Roku. You can get a taste of what’s to come (and get nostalgic about comedy right before COVID) with the trailer here.

Pick of the Day: Hybrid [with Open Mike Eagle] (in LA) 10/14

October 6, 2021
News
comedy show, jak knight, jesus trejo, la comedy, marcella arguello, megan gailey, open mike eagle, variety show

Whenever Open Mike Eagle dips into the world of comedy, it’s a damn good time. There has been New Negroes with Baron Vaughn and him, which hopped all around LA before it became a Comedy Central series.

Next week, he’s going to, after all of however interminably long you feel this time has been, put another music/comedy show, this time at El Cid called Hybrid (presented by Smarty Plants). Per usual, Eagle has a fantastic line-up of LA comedy’s finest (this one will have Jesus Trejo, Marcella Arguello, Jak Knight, and Megan Gailey) and his very own cutting edge rap along with a performance from Abstract Rude.

As the flyer says that Mike Eagle is “masterminding” this event, you ought to know that if you’re anywhere near Silverlake on Thurs. Oct. 14th at 7PM PT, you ought to take that big ol’ staircase down to El Cid.

Tickets are $12.30 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Jamel Johnson & Megan Gailey (in LA) 9/10

Both Jamel Johnson and Megan Gailey have been, time and time again, an uncompromising delight to watch the numerous times that we’ve seen them go up, both in and around LA and on Conan. Essentially, you will be charmed by them and they will hysterically not let up until that happens (in the best way possible, of course).

So, it’ll be quite a night at Dynasty Typewriter next month when Jamel and Megan co-headline. Sure, we’ve seen them on plenty of line-ups together, but never just as the main attractions as they will be on Fri. Sept. 10th at 8PM PT.

Do not miss this special co-headlining night at Dynasty Typewriter. Tickets are $20 right now and $25 on the day of. Best go get them ASAP right here.

Pick of the Day: Faded’s Drunk Spelling Bee 2/26

February 25, 2021
News
drunk spelling bee, faded comedy, jamel johnson, megan gailey

Watching adults trying to spell while wasted on the sauce is a pretty damn good time.

We got to catch such this hilariously inebriated phenomenon a couple of times before lockdown, but we haven’t been so lucky to catch it since last March.

Thankfully, the Faded Comedy gang is gearing up for such a thing on their Twitch channel this Friday. This first Faded Drunk Spelling Bee will, thus far, feature the likes of @objsucks, @nonprofitcomic, @megangailey, @DonovanStrain, @IfyNwadiwe, @nitzbluv, @sladkow, @DragonflyJonez, and more contestants who possibly will get in over their heads trying to use a skill that has very likely been used in years due to autocorrect.

The Faded Drunk Spelling Bee will stream live on Fri. Feb. 26th at 6PM PT/9PM ET at twitch.tv/fadedcomedyla. As always with Twitch live-streams, live-stream access is free, but donations are accepted.

Pick of the Day: Dynasty Confidential for KTown For All 2/2

January 22, 2021
News
dynasty typewriter, jes tom, joel kim booster, josh sharp, ktown for all, megan gailey, mitra jouhari, Sydnee Washington

Now that 2021 has REALLY begun, transparency is going to be crucial if we are to actually “form a more perfect union”. In other words, let’s not keep so many secrets.

That makes Dynasty Confidential with Joel Kim Booster a perfect show for this time as Joel will virtually assemble some of comedy’s best to divulge their secrets, and then do with them as he pleases. Also, you’ll get to bear witness to whole the thing for what is a hilarious evening of revelations.

This particular edition of Dynasty Confidential will go to benefit the amazing org Ktown For All that advocates for the unhoused population in and around LA.

So, plan for Tues. Feb. 2nd at 6PM PT/9PM ET to live-stream Dynasty Confidential after you go get your tickets here.

Pick of the Day: Memories with Liza Treyger 6/18

News
clark jones, Drew Anderson, kara klenk, kenny deforest, littlefields, liza treyger, marie faustin, megan gailey, Sydney Washington

OK, there’s nothing complicated here about Memories with Liza Treyger.

Truly, some of the best comedians in the entire country (that you need to know if you don’t already) are going to share some stories because we all can’t help but reminisce of our lives and times back in February while still in lockdown in June. As it’s the likes of comedians Liza Treyger, Kenny DeForest, Clark Jones, Drew Anderson, Megan Gailey, Kara Klenk, Sydney Washington, Marie Faustin, and Aminah Imani sharing stories, their tales really ought to be something to relish.

Also, partial proceeds will go to benefitting the Food Bank for NYC.

Memories with Liza Treyger is set for Thurs. Jun. 18th at 4PM PT/7PM ET.

Please Enjoy Megan Gailey’s Set on The Tonight Show

Megan Gailey just released a great album this week, My Dad Paid For This and offered a more fine comedy wares with her set on The Tonight Show from last night.

This set is a pretty great bookend to the album as Megan demands that she be engaged on her album by the time of its release and is now, in fact, engaged. Gailey’s just a few steps ahead always.

Please enjoy the set here.

This very first comedy album release from Megan Gailey not only is very good, but also presents an insightful, complex, layered, and, of course, very, very funny perspective on being a woman in these times on this debut album My Dad Paid For This.

Gailey very deftly shows all her facets as a woman who loves football, a woman who is critical of football’s problematic practices, a staunch feminist, a former sorority girl, and so much more all within the hour. It’s quite the delightful, very colorful portrait of Megan and this world she’s trying to deal with. Gailey self-deprecatingly comments on her persona throughout, but she comes off as someone with her own warmth (though she’s totally willing to put folks in their place).

So, get into My Dad Paid For This fresh off the presses from AST Records or at Apple Music or wherever you listen to comedy albums.

The comedy baseball mash-up phenomenon known as On Deck is having its “World Series”, just in time for a certain MLB World Series, with Megan Gailey’s Lucy Lucy Apple Juicys vs. Caitlin Weierhauser’s The Uncles. Both teams will be taking the stage together, trying to “smack” their punchlines/bits out of the park, one by one, making for a stand-up comedy experience like no other.

Join hosts/umpires Jamel Johnson, Courtney Karwal and Mike Mulloy to see who will the On Deck Commissioner’s Trophy. Tickets available here.

Dubbed as “The Jokey Show”, Whitmer Thomas is indeed taking his monthly slot at The Satellite and having all the comics dress up as the fictional character from DC Comics, The Joker (which will even be more intriguing considering nearly all of the line-up is comprised of women). Apart from that, we’re guessing some of them will be doing a normal stand-up set, but, then again, maybe they’ll try doing stand-up as some iteration of The Joker, anywhere from Cesar Romero to Joaquin Phoenix.

In any case, we’re fully on board for this stunt and whatever it ends up being and definitely think you should be in attendance to see what happens. Also, the line-up is fantastic with-or-without a Joker costume. Get tickets here.

The backroom of the Blue Rooster Art Supplies was poised to be the heir apparent to Nerdmelt @ Meltdown. Alas, such a fate was not to come to pass as construction and expansion will prohibit the space from being a live venue.

Thus, Faded, On Deck, live tapings of All Fantasy Everything, and more will be moving on to a new home in the Mid City Arts Center next month.

However, before they go, they’re throwing a big farewell this Saturday in the form of an all female comedy marathon featuring 30 of LA’s best female comedians telling one joke. Signature Drink, another Blue Rooster show alum, and its hosts Courtney Karwal and Megan Gailey will be presiding over what should be quite the swan song.

Seriously, this would be a show that you shouldn’t miss without the whole prospect of a venue closing. As this is a living wake of sorts, it’s even more imperative that you enjoy yourself at a damn fine stand-up show.

Best get your tickets here quick.

This comedy debate show, Straw Men, really pushes the envelope with how hilariously childish you can get in a debate and it’s all the more brilliant for it. The catharsis you’ll get from seeing adults resort to name calling in debates over the weirdest topics is just so damn fun.

We’ve got a good feeling that this show, The Professionals*, will be kind of like Tough Crowd with a modern twist (a thing we’ve been wishing would happen for awhile). ABC Developing Working-Class Midwestern Family Comedy “Everything’s Under Control” From Megan Gailey & Aaron Burdette

Though a “working-class midwestern family comedy” with a grandmother who gets Alzheimer’s could end up looking a myriad of ways, we really have dug Megan Gailey and sharp, yet grounded sense of humor ever since we saw her go up on LA stages. Also, Burdette wrote on the far-too-short-lived and highly innovative Man Seeking Woman on FX, which makes us think that this might be more than your typical dysfunctional family single camera comedy.

As always, we’ll just have to find out if and when this gets a series order.
