Pick of the Day 5/5/25: The Frogtown Show 9th Anniversary 5/10

May 5, 2025
News
anniversary, comedy show, emily maya mills, erin lennox, frogtown, jared goldstein, los angeles, spoke bicycle cafe

Nothing quite like an anniversary for a wondrous monthly show to remind you of the illusory passage of time, right?

The Frogtown Show has been going strong for 9 years as monthly comedy institution, which means surviving the pandemic and the aftermath of it as well as those historic fires in January. Emily Maya Mills, Erin Lennox, and Jared Goldstein are still at the helm of this fixture at one of LA’s treasured watering holes/gastropubs/bike shops/coffee shops, the pretty much magical gem that is Spoke Bicycle Cafe.

To mark the occasion, The Frogtown Show’s 9 Year Anniversary show will have a truly marvelous line-up of LA comedy stalwarts across many generations including Andy Kindler, Rachel Kaly, Curtis Cook, Brooks Wheelan, and Lorena Russi.

All they ask for is a $10 suggested donation! Have a lovely Saturday night by the beautiful part of the LA River and catch the 9th Anniversary of The Frogtown Show (and keep coming back every 2nd Saturday).

TCB Debriefing 10/25/23: TCB 13 Years Old, Mike Birbiglia, Eric Andre, Fargo S5, Comedy as Home

News
anniversary, eric andre, fargo, jimmy kimmel live, juno temple, mike birbiglia

1. Oct. 25th, 2010, Jake Kroeger founded The Comedy Bureau. Oct. 25th, 2023, he continues to run it, typing out this very sentence while at a diner at midnight. We thank you for reading this and making the countless hours in service of the community and art form of comedy worth it. Please keep reading, spreading the word, and, if you can, support.

or Venmo @jakekroeger

2. One of comedy’s all time greatest storytellers, Mike Birbiglia is going on a 24 city tour that will have nothing to do with a three camera set up on Zoom or working on jokes on IG Live. Please Stop the Ride is set to span the entirety of North America starting this Winter and stretching into the end of Spring 2024. Tix available now at birbigs.com w/code PANCAKE.

A post shared by Mike Birbiglia (@birbigs)

3. Eric Andre basically answered the question of who would win in a “prank-off” between him and Johnny Knoxville with a very, very loose interpretation of the word “prank” on Kimmel this week.

4. The fifth installment of Fargo seems to get back to that über dark humor of the original movie in 1996 thanks to the peculiar wife played by Juno Temple. Take a gander with the official trailer here, then look for new episodes on FX/Hulu starting Nov. 21st.

6. We’ll leave you with this: Comedy is a home that we, here at TCB, never knew until we found it. We hope we can give you that same sense of home if you’re looking for it.

Pick of the Day: Spoons Toons & Booze Eleven Yr. Anniversary Special (in NYC) 2/18

February 1, 2023
News
anniversary, brooklyn, morning cartoons, nitehawk cinema, nyc comedy

For 11 years, Spoons, Toons, and Booze has been NYC’s go-to Saturday-Morning-Cartoons-for-adults providing free cereal and pairing it with speciality cocktails and, of course, as much animated nostalgia you can handle, all at a movie theater. It’s quite a special thing for those of us that had the collective experience of Saturday morning cartoons (that’s probably not so much a thing for the streaming generation, right?).

Secret Formula in NY will be throwing a very special eleven year bash with hosts Michael Austin and Nell Casey at Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on the mornings of both Sat. Feb. 18th and Sun. Feb. 19th, specifically at 11:15AM. There will be a specially curated selection of vintage cartoon favorites as well as audience picks from over 150 different cartoon series that span decades upon decades upon decades of television.

Tickets are only $20 and you best go get them here.

Pick of the Day: The Comedy Bureau Double Anniversary LA 10/25

October 12, 2021
News
anniversary, byron bowers, clown zoo, dave ross, hannah einbinder, james adomian, la comedy, reggie watts

Not only are we celebrating our 10th and 11th years keeping the lights on TCB (again, we weren’t going to mark a decade of being a comedy institution by doing a show on Zoom), but we’re doing double the anniversary by doing it up with our favorite comedians on either coast. The NYC Double Anniversary is happening this Fri. Oct. 15th at Union Hall 7:30PM ET (get your tickets while you still can) and then we have the LA Double Anniversary at LA’s shiniest, new venue, The Elysian (located in Frogtown at 1944 Riverside Dr.) on Mon. Oct. 25th at 8PM PT.

It’s a dream line-up of our absolute favorites from past, present, and future, in and around all corners of comedy including:

  • James Adomian
  • Hannah Einbinder
  • Reggie Watts
  • Dave Ross
  • Byron Bowers
  • Clown Zoo

Also, TCB’s founder and director (and so many other things) Jake Kroeger will be serving as host.

Tickets are only $15 and you best get your tickets right here right now. If you somehow pull off going to both shows, we’ll give you one of our limited edition enamel pins that usually reserved for our top Patreon backers.

Pick of the Day: Tomorrow! with Ron Lynch 16th Anniversary Jam! (IG Live) 7/24

July 23, 2021
News
anniversary, brendon small, brent weinbach, chris walsh, craig anton, dana gould, davey johnson, laura kightlinger, michael mortilla, michael serwich, ron lynch, tomorrow show, virtual comedy

For 16 years, Tomorrow! has been the thing to do on Saturday night at midnight in LA. For so many years, longer than we’ve been doing or covering comedy, Ron Lynch has faithfully brought the perfect mix of absurdity, silliness, beauty, and honesty that’s worth keeping the night going that late.

Of course, for the last year, they haven’t been able to do that in a proper venue and Lynch company have taken to Instagram Live to keep the Tomorrow! flame going and indeed they have kept the show alive and kicking for all these months since whenever March 2020 was (that was a decade ago, right?).

To mark their 16 year anniversary, Ron will be bringing back the original trio, himself, Craig Anton, and Brendon Small, that started off this midnight institution as well as such luminary comedians as Dana Gould, Laura Kightlinger, and Brent Weinbach. Very likely, they’ll have more than just that to celebrate the occasion (in addition to the “Core Four” and Michael Mortilla).

These days, it ought to be something really special if you’re going to tune into an IG Live show, but the 16 Year Anniversary of Tomorrow! with Ron Lynch more than fits that bill. Tune in at Sat. Jul. 24th at 11PM PT/2AM ET on IG Live @ronlynch1 and support the show on Venmo @tomorrowshow.

Best of all, you won’t have to worry about the Delta variant!

Pick of the Day: The Daily Show Turns 25! 7/19

June 15, 2021
News
a whitney brown, anniversary, beth littleford, brian unger, lizz winstead, madeleine smithberg, rushtix, the daily show

After a quarter of a century, The Daily Show has been an institution of comedy, both in the realms of late night and political, and has ushered in changes that still reverberate through TV, comedy, and even politics itself to this very day.

So, marking its 25th anniversary is definitely an occasion worth celebrating and having a show for. Thankfully, The Daily Show co-creators Lizz Winstead and Madeleine Smithberg are joining the very first correspondents of The Daily Show, Beth Littleford, Brian Unger, and A. Whitney Brown, to mark the 25 year mark and tell the story of how this pillar of comedy broke its first ground.

The Daily Show Turns 25! will be a live-stream via RushTix on Mon. July 19th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets/access is only $20 (with an option to donate to Abortion Access Front) and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Planet Scum Anniversary 3/31

March 30, 2021
News
anniversary, chris gethard, planet scum, planet scum live
When the world shut down because of you-know-what last year, Chris Gethard and company didn’t waste nearly any time in transitioning to virtual comedy with their online comedy collective, Planet Scum. From Chris hosting his own TCGS-ish Planet Scum Live on Wednesdays, it quickly grew into a lovely cadre of comedy live-streams including George Lucas Talk Show, Who Wants $2.69 with Martin Urbano, and Robby Hoffman Consulting Group (FKA Dykevice).
This Wed., Mar. 31st will mark a year of Gethard and company going full tilt into Planet Scum and there will be a special edition of Planet Scum LIVE! that will commemorate over 250 shows since 4/1/2020 as well as up to $2,380.80 in prize money to win and a new Planet Scum LIVE! co-host in the amazing Will Hines to join Chris and Christi Chiello.
Mark this very special anniversary/get through some more time of the pandemic by tuning into the Planet Scum Anniversary by tuning into Planet Scum Live at 7PM PT/10PM ET.

It’s quite simple. One of the best shows in town, Hot Tub with Kurt & Kristen, is celebrating that it has been one of the best shows in town (in NYC in the past and LA now actually) for 15 years and is having such the massive, gala worthy line-up.

Also, the always marvelous duo of Kurt Braunohler and Kristen Schaal will there hosting (and, well, maybe they could do Kristen Schaal Is a Horse for even longer?)

Tickets are sold out right now, but a few door tickets will be available. Line-up plenty early for your chance to snag them. Stay up to date with the ticket situation @hottub_show.

Truly, it only seems like a little while ago that a super cool variety show called The Super Serious Show started up in a super cool photo studio and provided a stellar variety showcase of stand-up, short film, characters, music, and more.

Yet, almost 9 years later, The Super Serious Show, now at the also super cool Virgil, continues to stand as that same stellar, very diverse, carefully handpicked comedy variety showcase we really love.

For their 9 year mark, they’re really bringing the goods as you can see in the 9 year anniversary line-up above. Don’t miss out on helping them celebrating 9 years and seeing a great, great comedy show.

So, this was supposed to happen at the end of October, but, as you can see from our staff page, we’re a little overworked. Thus, it took awhile to celebrate being LA’s best resource for comedy.

Anyways, we hope you come down to Echoes on Pico and enjoy our favorites from every corner of comedy as well as our very own Jake Kroeger. Tickets are only $10 for this gala worthy show. Go get ‘em here.

This is our official, bureau-wide reminder that our 8 year anniversary is today (TCB was founded on Oct. 25th, 2010 and is indeed trademarked).

We’re appropriately thankful to all of our employees for their hard, non-stop, obsessive (maybe a bit unhealthy) work over the years to keep Los Angeles and the greater LA area (and the country and, hell, the world) informed on the overflowing riches of comedy that exist within the city for fans, performers, industry folks, etc.

Also, we’re thankful to all of you for giving us reason to keep the lights on (or sure that Jake always has a fancy hat) around here.

We’ll throw a more notable anniversary event at date TBD.

For tonight, you can come say hi (and maybe a thanks or something? whatever you feel comfortable with) to our staff at Tabula Rasa (5125 Hollywood Blvd.) near Los Feliz around 11PM.

If you need more reason to go, then just trust that we’re telling you to go because it’s worth it.

Arguably, Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen is one of the best comedy shows in the country, maybe even the world. It has become a staple in both LA and NYC that’s pretty much sold to capacity every week well over a whole decade.

This 12th Anniversary of Hot Tub that’s happening tomorrow is actually sold out, but there will be a small number of tickets available at the door. Both Kurt and Kristen will do some of their classic sketches in addition to the killer line-up that they always have.

This Monday night, February 20th, doors will be open at 7PM at The Virgil (we’re guessing some might be lining up well before that), tickets will be at $8 at the door, and the show will start at 8PM.
