Please Enjoy Kenice Mobley’s Top Notch Debut on Tonight Show

February 25, 2021
News
kenice mobley, stand up comedy, tonight show

With all the things that are going on at this moment in time, it is indeed so very hard it is to do comedy right now, arguably harder than any other time in our lifetimes. So, trying to do stand-up on late night, for all the hurdles that you would have to clear to do it at all right now (and still dare to do it during the pandemic), is a whole other level of difficulty that no one could have possibly imagined a year and a half ago.

NYC’s Kenice Mobley delivered such a finely tuned set for her first time (remotely and very likely a tiny audience) on The Tonight Show that it should be doubly noted for her stellar delivery and execution of it. Mobley has been a NYC comedy favorite for years now. Without the pandemic, she probably would have gotten to played plenty of cities across the country at this point.

Hopefully, this set will be thoroughly enjoyed and remembered when things can open, safely, in earnest.

Watch and enjoy Kenice’s debut set on The Tonight Show here.

Wayne Federman Is Coming Out with a “History of Stand-Up” Book Next Month

February 25, 2021
News
comedy history, history of stand up, wayne federman

When it comes to chronicling the history of stand-up, especially as someone who has lived through a good majority of it, there are few that rival the likes of Wayne Federman. He has performed and written comedy for so many decades and has managed to adapt with the times throughout all of it.

A few years ago Wayne did a podcast called The History of Standup where he dived deep into the timeline of standup comedy over several episodes. Now, he has a book that will be coming out called The History of Stand-Up: From Mark Twain to Dave Chappelle. What’ll be different about the book is not only the opportunity to put every detail and nuance about the history of stand-up comedy that Wayne knows about, but he’ll also have a bit of perspective on comedy that has happened and is happening during this pandemic (full disclosure-he personally called us about it), which is as up-to-date on the history of comedy as you possibly get.

You are very likely a fan of comedy if you’re reading this, so look for The History of Stand-Up: From Mark Twain to Dave Chappelle to be released on Mar. 15th. Pre-order the e-book here (hard copies will be on sale on Mar. 15th as well).

Pick of the Day: Faded’s Drunk Spelling Bee 2/26

February 25, 2021
News
drunk spelling bee, faded comedy, jamel johnson, megan gailey

Watching adults trying to spell while wasted on the sauce is a pretty damn good time.

We got to catch such this hilariously inebriated phenomenon a couple of times before lockdown, but we haven’t been so lucky to catch it since last March.

Thankfully, the Faded Comedy gang is gearing up for such a thing on their Twitch channel this Friday. This first Faded Drunk Spelling Bee will, thus far, feature the likes of @objsucks, @nonprofitcomic, @megangailey, @DonovanStrain, @IfyNwadiwe, @nitzbluv, @sladkow, @DragonflyJonez, and more contestants who possibly will get in over their heads trying to use a skill that has very likely been used in years due to autocorrect.

The Faded Drunk Spelling Bee will stream live on Fri. Feb. 26th at 6PM PT/9PM ET at twitch.tv/fadedcomedyla. As always with Twitch live-streams, live-stream access is free, but donations are accepted.

Should Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar Be Up For Award Consideration?

February 24, 2021
News
barb and star go to vista del mar, kristen wiig

There shouldn’t be much debate about Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar already standing as one of the best comedies of 2021 (and of recent memory). Truly, it’s unabashed love of its own farce and full tilt into weirdness led valiantly by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumulo is through and through comedy magic. Beautiful non-sequiturs, physical comedy galore, and bits on bits on bits make should very much make Barb and Star one of the most quotable, beloved comedies of this era.

So, with that in mind, shouldn’t it get some love during awards season? Historically, comedy, especially the pure kind, free of any sort of coming-of-age melodrama, isn’t treated kindly when it comes to the Oscars, Golden Globes (remember that they still loop in comedy with musicals), Spirit Awards, etc. etc. The value of awards in the grand schemes of moviemaking and comedy these days is very questionable to be sure. Yet, in our everlasting quest to tout the art form of comedy to any and all, it would be quite something for comedy to get some equity when it comes to getting artistic recognition with any sort of moving image.

Sure, it might seem weird that Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar next to traditional Oscar bait. That’s the problem though, isn’t it? The major awards for achievement in film seem narrowed to focus on a certain kind of grandiose drama and will only usually only give comedies the slightest of nods when it comes to writing. Perhaps, if there was more inclusivity not only of stories from all different backgrounds, but genre as well, especially when it comes to comedy, there might be more weight to these awards. That could be doubly true when it comes to their relevance to the general public and even in the grander context of film history.

Also, if Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar were to be in the mix for awards contention and then won, we have no doubt that Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumulo would have a pretty grand acceptance speech that would stand out from most of the sincere thanks and political grandstanding (no matter what they come up with).

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 48: Symone Baptiste & Reparations (with People Telling Their Own Stories)

February 24, 2021
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report

Filmmaker and comedy booker Symone Baptiste has had a great run with her short film, Sixteen Thousand Dollars in the past year going through all sorts of film festivals, done virtually of course. The short hits on the crucial topic of reparations for black people that the U.S. government seems like they’re barely willing to entertain, much less actually go through with. Going further with that idea, Symone dives into the importance of people getting to tell their own stories as opposed to just white people doing it. Also, “hot” takes on Spotify’s global expansion and the upcoming premiere of Showtime’s Ziwe.

NOTE: If you are able to catch Symone out in public when we can all gather safely again and she is wearing jeans (AKA hard pants), she will pay you money.

Pick of the Day: My Diary 2/25

February 24, 2021
News
billie lee, diary, georgia hardstark, henry zebrowski, just blaze, leah lamarr, lindsay ames, storytelling

My Diary was one of the very best storytelling shows in LA. It was so expansive in all the sorts of vulnerability that it covered with all the folks who were up for sharing their diaries, journals, poetry, etc. etc. Creator Lindsay Ames made sure to have a wide range of great folks, in and out of comedy, making for a cathartic, hysterical, deeply personal night. In short, it was always unforgettable.

So, we’re pretty jazzed that Lindsay is doing a special edition of My Diary on the Clubhouse app along with co-host Leah Lamarr that will feature the likes of Georgia Hardstark of My Favorite Murder, Henry Zebrowski of Last Podcast on the Left, Billie Lee of She’s So Vegan, and comedian Tehran.

This special Clubhouse edition of My Diary will stream this Thurs. Feb. 25th at 7PM PT/10PM ET and is, as long you’re on Clubhouse, free to listen in. Follow @mydiaryshowla for more details/updates.

Ziwe Premieres May 9th on Showtime, So Clear Up Your Schedule Already

February 23, 2021
News
showtime, ziwe

Self-styled icon Ziwe famously rose to fame at a time when we all, famously, we’re stuck at home, probably in despair via her IG Live series, Baited. To this very day, it’s probably one of the very best things that has ever been done on IG Live and it’s very likely that anything else doesn’t even come close to how vital, pointed, and hysterical it was.

From there, Ziwe had a banner year, made all the lists, got a book deal, and, famously, was bestowed with her very Showtime variety series.

The show, appropriately titled, Ziwe, is set to premiere on Sun. May 9th on Showtime. We’d highly recommend using this time until then to prepare for such a date, especially when it comes to making sure watching Ziwe’s premiere being the only thing on your schedule that Sunday.

Oops. Sorry to leave you on read. How does May 9th sound? https://t.co/ZAL3BJBDss

News
bri pruett, daniel rugg webb, madison shepard, maggie maye, sara june, vanessa gonzalez

That’s why the wondrous and magical comedy variety show, High Priestess, is doing a very special live-stream show in support of Austin’s Safe Alliance that is providing much needed resources to Texans in dire need right now (in addition to be an org in service of abuse survivors). Spotify Is Expanding to Over 80 New Markets and Even More Folks Around the World Can Stream Comedy Albums

February 22, 2021
News
spotify

When it comes to consumption of comedy albums, lots of folks have gone to and through Spotify to listen and comb through thousands upon thousands upon thousands of hours of stand-up, sketch, etc. While buying special vinyl releases for comedy has shown to bolster actual sales for the handful of comedians that can even do a vinyl release, the ease of streaming someone’s new or debut album on Spotify is hard to beat.

Now, Spotify is going to extend their global reach to just over 80 different markets that they hadn’t been in before, which means there will be an even greater chance of folks around the globe to discover whatever new comedy is in the audio streaming giant’s library.

The new markets will include:

Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Bhutan, Botswana, Brunei Darussalam, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chad, Comoros, Côte d’Ivoire, Curaçao, Djibouti, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, Fiji, Gabon, Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Grenada, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Kyrgyzstan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Lesotho, Liberia, Macau, Madagascar, Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Marshall Islands, Mauritania, Mauritius, Micronesia, Mongolia, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Samoa, San Marino, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Hopefully, this translates to more plays/spins for comedians who have their material on Spotify translating to way more income for them (via SoundExchange or something).

Pick of the Day: Doughboys Munch Madness Finale 3/23

February 22, 2021
News
doughboys, mike mitchell, munch madness, nick wiger

The pandemic has taken away so many things away from us all, but one thing that has absolutely endured is fast food. In fact, several fast food establishments have thrived during this time and, along with them, the best podcast about chain restaurants, Doughboys with Nick Wiger and Mike Mitchell, thoroughly endures.

With that in mind, Wiger and Mitch have also put on another round of their hallowed, but chaos-filled annual fast food tournament, Munch Madness. As the pandemic is still happening, they’ll be doing a very special LIVE, virtual edition of the finale of Munch Madness via On Location Live. The showdown of the most addictive, cheap food is set for Tues. Mar. 23rd at 5PM PT/8PM ET.

Tickets for livestream access are only $15.75 and you can (and should) get them here (NOTE: you’ll be able to stream it for a week if you can’t watch it live).

Please Enjoy Watching a Shiva Go Completely Awry in Trailer for “Shiva Baby”

February 19, 2021
News
emma seligman, Rachel Sennott, shiva baby

It seems as though the handful of big movie releases that have managed to happen in the last year on some streaming service, VOD, or, perhaps, at a drive-in haven’t really lived up to any of the hype. Maybe not watching them on the big screen has something to do with that or maybe the good stuff is being kept for when movie theaters can open in full.

Indie and arthouse fare, however, have gone strong throughout the pandemic and another indie comedy that one should be looking forward to is Shiva Baby.

Emma Seligman‘s feature length debut throws several flies into the ointment of the already cathartic experience of Shiva with a bisexual lead in Rachel Sennott just happening to run into her sugar daddy and her ex-girlfriend. Sounds pretty fun to us. Here‘s a trailer to give you a sneak peek of all of that.

Look for the release of Shiva Baby on Apr. 2nd.

The Amber Ruffin Show to Air on NBC in Place of A Little Late with Lilly Singh Repeats

February 19, 2021
News
amber ruffin, nbc

(via Deadline)

The Amber Ruffin Show is the newest addition to the late night talk show/topical news comedy arena. That said, it only streams on NBC’s exclusive streaming platform, Peacock, unlike any other major late night show backed by a major network.

That’s all set to change as NBC has made a 1:30AM slot on Fridays (in place of repeats of A Little Late with Lilly Singh) for Ruffin and her weekly show, which will make her the fourth late night host at the network along side Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and Lilly Singh. NBC has maintained a more robust late night line-up than another network or streaming service with keeping The Tonight Show, Late Night, and The Late Late Show going in tandem for several years.

Now, it’s even more the case.

As of Feb. 26th, the gleeful, yet biting Amber Ruffin Show will make its network linear debut on NBC and the reach of the more diverse parts of late night will be just a little more visible.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge Has Been Made the First President of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society

February 19, 2021
News
edinburgh fringe, fringe festival, phoebe waller bridge

Phoebe Waller-Bridge stands very, very tall these days from being one of the most successful veterans of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where her groundbreaking show Fleabag was first performed as a solo show before it became the beloved and acclaimed TV series.

So, the Fringe Society, the charity organization that supports artists performing at the world famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival, has appointed Phoebe as a President (FYI, most performers at the Fringe have to pay their own way to the festival from top to bottom and can only hope to make their money back through ticket sales). She’ll be reaching out on behalf of and represent the Fringe Society and she is pretty much the perfect person to do so.

We’ll be curious to see what her first moves in this capacity as Fringe Society President as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival isn’t happening live and in person until 2022. There will be some sort of virtual programming, but the details haven’t been announced yet.

In any case, it’s about time Phoebe Waller-Bridge had a title like president bestowed on her.

?Big news! ?

Yes, yes, it really is true…

We're excited to announce that @fleabag star, the excellent Phoebe Waller-Bridge, has been appointed as the first ever President of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society ❣️

Pick of the Day: Hot Tub with Kurt & Kristen 16th Anniversary 2/22

February 19, 2021
News
beth stelling, christina catherine martinez, hot Tub, jackie kashian, kyle kinane, langston kerman, wyatt cenac

Even without a pandemic, the idea of a weekly comedy show, especially a stalwartly funny one, going for 16 years is astounding. Hot Tub with Kurt & Kristen has been one of the best shows hands down wherever it has been (including NYC, LA, and festivals all around).

Kurt Braunohler and Kristen Schaal and their crew, currently CleftClips & HoldThePhone Comedy, have built a comedy institution over those several years, which was where we spent the majority of our Monday nights before lockdown. To keep going during the pandemic as one of the best, yet again, most reliable comedy live-streams deserves a standing ovation no matter where you are or what you’re doing currently.

To mark the occasion, they’ll be doing the show in their virtual Hot Tub: Home Edition format LIVE at HOLDTHEPHONE.TV with a brimming and bustling line-up of their personal favorites including Wyatt Cenac, Kyle Kinane, Jackie Kashian, Langston Kerman, Beth Stelling, and Christina Catherine Martinez.

You can stream it for free on Feb. 22nd at 8PM PT/11PM ET, as you’ve always been able to do during lockdown, or, you can support them and the comics and their home at The Virgil in LA by joining the Hot Tub Club at Patreon where you could be part of a limited live Zoom audience. We say do it if you haven’t already, especially for their 16th anniversary.

Bob Baker Day Is Going Virtual for 2021, But Will Explore Los Angeles With Its Marionettes

February 18, 2021
News
bob baker day, bob baker marionette theater, metro arts, puppets

One of LA’s best treasures, The Bob Baker Marionette Theater, takes one day, Bob Baker Day, out of the year to really pull out all the stops and highlight why they are such the aforementioned local jewel.

Of course, they still can’t do their normal all day festival that would take place in person that is effectively like an entire carnival for the theater featuring puppet shows, live music, workshops, etc. Instead, while the pandemic has most of us stuck at home, they’re doing something different, but equally charming and also cleverly innovative.

The Bob Baker Marionette Theater will be putting on, in collaboration with Metro Arts, a virtual tour of Los Angeles starting at LA’s famed Union Station. This Bob Baker Day virtual LA tour will show off the city as well as feature plenty of the marionettes and puppets that the theater is famed for. Get a sneak peek of what’s in store with this featurette here.

Look for this exclusive Bob Baker Day to start on Sat. Feb. 27th and then be available to virtually watch/engage/play with for 7 days.

Finally, the Kevin Can F**K Himself Trailer Is Here

February 18, 2021
News
amc, annie murphy, kevin can f himself, rashida jones, will mccormack

Ever since we heard about the initial development of Kevin Can F**k Himself from Valerie Armstrong, Rashida Jones, and Will McCormack, which seems like decades ago at this point, we were so enthusiastically and completely on board. A satirical meta series about the stock multi-cam sitcom wife gaining her own agency and doing something about the hellish nightmare she has been stuck in with a slacker, overweight, dismissive, yet “lovable” husband? It’s like our subconscious, and, very likely, the subconscious of many who are sick of schlocky formulaic family sitcoms are finally getting realized.

As far as we can see, this is a much needed response to the plethora of outdated multi-cams where wives were one-dimensional and always way out of the league of their husbands (just check out most Kevin James led sitcoms).

Having Schitt’s Creek’s Annie Murphy take on the lead role had us even more excited for what was to come for the show destined for AMC. Now, we all finally get a first look at what’s in store for us all with the first official trailer for KEVIN CAN F**K HIMSELF that just dropped today.

Getting tinges of Promising Young Woman and Groundhog Day and we’re still very much all in for it. Look for KEVIN CAN F**K HIMSELF this Summer on AMC.

Pick of the Day: The Couples Therapy Quarantine Party 1-Year in Isolation 3/13

News
andy beckerman, couples therapy, dynasty typewriter, naomi ekperigin

For the good majority of us in the U.S., the one year mark of lockdown (don’t you dare give it the label of something nice like an anniversary) is coming up. Whether or however you want to mark the occasion (or not at all) should be, at the very least, accompanied by the knowledge that you made it this far, which we’re pretty sure almost every on planet earth didn’t believe that they couldn’t do.

If you do choose to take note of going 1 year in lockdown/quarantine/quar, may we suggest enjoying it with one of our favorite comedy power/quarantine couples, Naomi Ekperigin & Andy Beckerman under the banner of their podcast/live-stream show, Couples Therapy.

They’ll be doing a special Couples Therapy Quarantine Party 1-Year in Isolation live-stream via Dynasty Typewriter after keeping each other, their special guests, and their faithful audience sane while staying indoors for a year.

Couples Therapy Quarantine Party 1-Year in Isolation is set to stream on Sat. Mar. 13th at 6PM PT/9PM ET and tickets are only $5-$10. Go get them here right now.

Nate Bargatze’s “The Greatest Average American Special” to Drop on Netflix on Mar. 18th

News

The flow of comedy specials that would come out isn’t where it used to be, especially at Netflix. Yet, just because they’re not kicking out two or even three specials a week doesn’t mean they’re out of the goods.

Nate Bargatze’s latest hour The Greatest Average American is set to come out before too long. Well, specifically, it’s about a month away with a premiere date of Thurs. Mar. 18th. The soothing, slow burn delivery of Bargatze coupled with his fascinating, out-of-left-field observations have always busted us up and it’s been really a treat to see Nate become one of the go-to comics at The Tonight Show and having his first hour on Netflix really raise Nate’s profile more so than it already have been.

Again, look for The Greatest Average American on Mar. 18th on Netflix at netflix.com/NateBargatzeTheGreatestAverageAmerican

JFL Montreal Says They’re Going to Do a Mix of Virtual and In Person Shows This Summer

February 17, 2021
News
jfl montreal, just for laughs

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

There is live comedy that is happening in patches here and there across North America. Certainly, you’ve heard of comedians flocking to Florida and Austin, TX from NYC and LA. However, the big time comedy events have only whispers, thus far, as to what they’re going to do and when it’s going happen. The current wisdom, as far as we’ve heard, points towards fall and early next year for live, in-person shows to happen in some sort of fashion like they used to. Of course, that is all subject to the rollout of the vaccine.

JFL Montreal, one of the world’s foremost comedy festivals, is setting to formally return this Summer and have live in-person events, though virtual shows will still very much be a part of the festivities. As to the balance between the two, there are no details as of yet. Hopefully, whatever the share of in-person shows are will be based on the trending COVID-19 numbers and vaccine rollout in Montreal, Quebec, and Canada as we head towards their normal Summer dates from July 15th-31st.

So, maybe get ready to showcase if you’re still gunning for New Faces at JFL?

For comedy, the special will be focusingn on late night disruptors Desus & Mero, beloved multi-hyphenate Nicole Byer, and upstart icon Ziwe Fumudoh, all four of which are some of our absolute favorites in comedy and should be more touted and awarded and hired than they currently are (which is quite a bit).

Amazon Taps Phoebe Waller-Bridge & Donald Glover to Reboot Mr. & Mrs. Smith as Series

February 15, 2021
News
amazon, donald glover, francesca sloane, mr mrs smith, phoebe waller bridge, reboot

(via Deadline)

So, Amazon is taking a proven IP and gathering two of the most sought after voices in comedy right now and stirring it all on a pot together. Let’s hope that works.

Both Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover created two of the most acclaimed comedies of the last few years in Fleabag and Atlanta, respectively. Both shows had them starring and leading the charge creatively resulting in a plethora of glowing reviews, award nominations, and even a good chunk of award wins.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith was a blockbuster spy/action adventure rom com that most folks know from 2005 starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt with Doug Liman, one of the best action directors around, at the helm. As you may well know, it was a commercial success.

We’re curious to see how two of comedy’s current geniuses along with Atlanta writer/producer Francesca Sloane will reboot the series (we’d guess that it’s going to be quite different from the movie) at Amazon and make it more than just relying on something that has worked before a few times with beloved names attached.

As the wheels turn in our head, we’re imagining something between Run, Killing Eve, and the music video for This Is America. That works for us, but we’ll just have to wait, probably awhile because of COVID-19, and see what Waller-Bridge, Glover, and Sloane actually have their up sleeve.

Pick of the Day: Bling Empire: A Live Reading Fundraiser 2/24

News
bling empire, bowen yang, chinatown, chinatown love, fumi abe, irene tu, jes tom, joel kim booster, julia shiplett, kiko soiree, nori reed, peter kim, sherry cola, Tien Tran

Comedians doing a live read for a reality show is already a good enough sell as is.

Having a line-up of Bowen Yang, Joel Kim Booster, Nori Reed, Jared Goldstein, Sherry Cola, Julia Shiplett, Tien Tran, and more do a live-read of a specific episode of Bling Empire is even better.

Doing that all for the sake of directly supporting Asian communities (at a time that Asian communities direly need backing from everyone due to an upward trend in hate crimes against Asians) in both LA and NYC shouldn’t even be the reason that you’d go in for this live-reading, but if that’s it, then so be it.

Thus, you should get tickets via a $10 suggested donation to the upcoming Bling Empire: A Live Reading Fundraiser on Wed. Feb. 24th at 6PM PT/9PM ET that’s raising money for Chinatown Community for Equitable Development (LA) and Send Chinatown Love (NYC).  You can and should get more details/donate/tickets/live-stream access here.

The Creek & The Cave to Reopen in Austin After Closing in NYC

February 12, 2021
News
atx, austin, creek and cave

While comedy clubs/venues around the country have been closing, Austin, being one of the biggest comedy scenes in America that is actively doing in-person shows during the pandemic, seems to be gaining clubs left and right.

Yesterday, we reported to you that Cap City Comedy Club reversed its announcement that they were closing their doors for good and will reopen in October. It turns out that they will be getting another club as NYC’s beloved venue The Creek & The Cave is moving down to Austin, TX. They had to close their doors due to the persistent lockdown for performance venues in NYC after over a decade of faithfully serving the NYC comedy scene from open mikers all the way to Colin Quinn (he workshopped a whole special there).

Since live comedy is currently happening in Austin, Creek & Cave founder Rebecca Trent has taken that opportunity to given The Creek & The Cave a second life down there as well as growing the ATX comedy scene even bigger than it already is. As of April Fools’ Day this year, their doors will open. You can follow for more updates @creekandcaveatx on Instagram.
