Please Enjoy Good Cop Great Cop’s Take on Performance Reviews

November 11, 2021
News
charlie hankin, good cop great cop, matt porter, performance review, sketch comedy

As we near two years of going through this very real life nightmare of the pandemic, we’re at a point where things are truly are coming back. That includes one of our favorite sketch groups around, Good Cop Great Cop (Matt Porter and Charlie Hankin).

They used to crank out sketches all the time that struck a great balance between sheer absurdity and grounded reality, all while keeping a figurative straight face. We’ve posted plenty of them throughout the years (even their CC digital series New Timers), but 2020 definitely put that on pause (as it did the whole world).

Thankfully, both Matt and Charlie are doing fine and are officially back at it as evidenced by this latest Good Cop Great Cop sketch about performance reviews. From the looks of it, they have not lost a step. Please enjoy it here.

Here’s a Handy Guide on How to Deal with Your Feelings of Your Sports Team Changing Its Native American Mascot

Slowly (oh, so slowly), but surely, the tide is shifting towards ridding sports of racist mascots, especially when it comes to those that denigrate Native Americans. That said, there are those folks who have a hard time with change, even if it’s clearly the right thing to do because… they spent too much money on merch?

We’d really hope folks are past claiming the argument “that’s always been their name, so it should stay that way,” but, undoubtedly, there are folks that think it’s their “heritage”.

So, thanks to native comedian/writer Joey Clift, you have a handy, dandy guide to be, well, less racist. Please enjoy How To Cope With Your Team Changing Its Native American Mascot here.

Tickets go on sale in November, but, more importantly, you can submit for consideration be part of the SF Sketchfest (and they pretty much accept any and all types of comedy) up until midnight PT on Oct. 15th.

America currently hovers at just over 48% fully vaccinated against COVID-19 despite Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson vaccines being readily available to the majority of Americans at this very moment.

We could go into lurid detail about it, but we’ll let you just enjoy the 13 minute ride (which, if you love I Think You Should Leave, we think you’ll love).

Pick of the Day: The Anti-Influencer Hour with Rachel Resnik Anniversary 4/17

The Pack Theater has been a rare success story during a dark time for live performance/comedy venues doing a big fundraiser at the beginning of lockdown here in America, then full tilt transitioning into a virtual venue several weekly shows and a healthy offering of classes.

One of the recurring shows that has been party to this success is Rachel Resnik’s Anti-Influencer Hour, which originally was organized and live-streamed while Rachel was in Paris, France and, as such, sourced comedians, sketch folks, clowns, etc. from all over the globe to do wonderfully out there bits and characters (the sort that would make up for us all not being able to go to the Edinburgh Fringe in person for another year).

This Saturday Apr. 17th at 7PM PT/10PM ET, The Anti-Influencer Hour celebrates a year of live-streaming some delightfully off-beat comedy on The Pack’s Twitch Channel. Join them in their first anniversary as, best of all, it’s free to watch (they’ll be taking donations as well).

There’s no way to know the extent of effects of this historic time of the COVID-19 pandemic right now (especially since we’re still in the thick of it all). Given that entirety of the world went through, there are literally billions of experiences that humanity went through over the last year and change. Rampant infection/death and economic devastation are some of the more obvious, colossal things.

However, the journey of individual folks is undoubtedly makes for the sorts of stories that will be passed down for generations, written in short stories, shared at the Moth, and be common ground to talk to strangers at a bar for several years to come.

Case in point: Comedian/clown/actress Courtney Pauroso’s experience in quarantine is something to behold. Just see for yourself in this “candid video” here.

A few years ago (or maybe several depending on how you count years in pandemic time), the phenomenal Joe Kwaczala released 31 videos on the same day in honor of just turning 31. You can revel all of those videos’ comedic glory here.

Before that, you might want to delve into the latest gift from Kwaczala, 21 new sketch comedy videos for the year 2021 that are just a wonderfully bizarre and hysterically out-of-left-field as those other 31 videos all those years ago. Also, Joe is raising money for East Hollywood Mutual Aid as nearly all government economic recovery packages have fallen quite short from what Americans need to get through this pandemic.

Merging of Late Night and Sketch Comedy Emmy Categories Sparks Ire and a Joint Letter

January 27, 2021
News
controversy, emmys, late night, sketch comedy

(via Deadline)

Comedy already comes up with the short straw during awards season and it looks like it’s going to get more unfair with the Emmys, as of this year, combining the nominees in late night comedy and sketch comedy together rather than have their own separate categories as was the rule for so long.

Networks and showrunners are set to submit a letter to the Academy of TV Arts & Sciences to reverse the change for the upcoming Primetime Emmys.

It might seem like a niche issue, especially during a pandemic, but, again, the squeezing of recognition for comedy at a major awards is worrisome in the long run. Also, for those who aren’t aware, late night may have sketches here and there, but it’s definitely its own realm that is decidedly different in tone, pacing, and format to any sort of sketch comedy series. Would you really pit Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Late Night with Seth Meyers against A Black Lady Sketch Show I Think You Should Leave or Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun?

If you would, then we’d kindly ask you to think about the potential notoriety and opportunity that could come for writers/showrunners/the shows themselves from having separate awards for late night and sketch and how much that could do for pushing comedy forward. Very seriously, how is there supposed to be room for great newcomers in late night like Desus & Mero if the field is dominated by perennial favorites like Colbert and SNL?

Reportedly, this controversy might even lead to a boycott of the Emmys (if they have to be done over Zoom again or in some sort of weird pre-taped, socially distanced way, would very likely be more exciting than the ceremony itself).

This year’s Primetime Emmys are usually held in September, so there is time for this to change and we’ll definitely keep you in the loop if that happens.

Though we can’t gather close together for the holidays (really, we shouldn’t be gathering with COVID-19 cases, infection rates, and hospitalizations spiking like they are), we can still get into the holiday tradition of touring around the neighborhood and looking at everyone’s holiday lights set-up. If you don’t feel safe doing that, you still don’t have to miss out as Carmencita the Christmas Mouse (Carmen Morales) went ahead and did a holiday lights tour for everyone.

Dead Kevin has been and will continue to be one of our all time favorite sketch groups. Comprised of stand-ups Ahmed Bharoocha, Ryan O’Flanagan, and Jack Robichaud, their non-sequitur-ish sketches of some guys that lived together always perfectly hit a nerve with us. Just see for yourself in their vast catalog available for your viewing pleasure and convenience on their YouTube channel.

While Ahmed, Ryan, and Jack hadn’t gotten together as Dead Kevin in awhile (they did put out some sketches as lockdown took hold though), it’s pretty damn exciting to know that they’re assembling once more for a live-stream show via asemblco. Dead Kevin & Friends is set as the trio’s very next live show that will stream on this Sun. Dec. 13th at 5PM PT/8PM ET.

Tickets are only $5 and you can (and should) get them here.

At this, in-person human interaction/connection is a very precious resource. Much of the country is about to impose or already has imposed stricter lockdown measures as COVID-19 cases have been spiking up again and travel and gathering for Thanksgiving is being highly discouraged.

Joshua Turek taps into this very notion with this wonderful new sketch, “Tennis & Abandoment”. It shows what happens when even an ounce of carelessness comes into the equation of physically meeting up with another person these days and how even a friendly morning round of tennis is to be cherished and absolutely not wasted.

Oh, you’ll notice that Christina Catherine Martinez delivers an inspired performance and continuing to blaze her trail in serving up marvelous comedy during the global pandemic.

Though we all knew that Trump would deny that he lost and seemingly refuse to leave The White House if that were the case, the horrifically taut tension of 2020 is still very much straining the entire world.

So, we’d like to suggest a nice little break for some self-care in the form of the peak absurdist musical/sketch comedy of the fantastic Australian sketch group Aunty Donna comprised of Mark Bonanno, Broden Kelly, Zachary Ruane, and Sam Lingham. Specifically, this song “Everything’s a Drum” offers up one of the more sensationally ridiculous sketches we’ve seen in some time.

If you dig that, you might want to hop on over to Netflix to catch their entire six episode run of Aunty Donna’s Big Ol House of Fun that just started streaming this week. Just like they’ve done in any of their internationally touring live stage shows in the past, Aunty Donna is pretty fearless in how silly and daft they go and really reap the rewards for doing so.

Also, Ed Helms is actually is on camera in the show as an EP if you need more convincing for some reason to go binge it right now.

Running for just a tad bit longer than us here at TCB, the musical sketch comedy extravaganza that is Lost Moon Radio has been one of our favorite comedy troupes during our entire tenure as a bureau of comedy. Their highly inventive, innovative way to present finely crafted comedy that’s intellectually satisfying, gutturally funny, and even emotionally resonant really captivated us from the first time that we saw them several years ago down at Cafe Fais Do-Do.
That’s why we’re very proud to be partnering with them to present their very first virtual show, done out of safety due to the COVID-19 pandemic, aptly titled, Lost Moon Radio’s Doing Fine. Per usual there will be Lost Moon Radio‘s splendidly curated batch of bits and songs, but it’ll be done all over YouTube Live. It will be quite the feat considering that they always have quite a sizable cast and always feature a grand, live band at every one of their shows.
On top of all of that, a portion of the profits for the show go to the wonderful local org A Place Called Home. They are dedicated to providing crucial arts and after school programs for the youth of South LA.

Lost Moon Radio’s Doing Fine will stream on YouTube Live on Tues. Oct. 27th at 7PM PT/10PM ET (“Doors” 6:45PM PT/9:45PM ET).

YouTube link will be sent to e-mail after donating ($10-$20 suggested). Get on those tickets right now right here.

If you’re going to travel by plane these days, a private jet would seem to be the way to go in terms of keeping yourself safe from COVID-19. Of course, not all of us can afford it, but for those who can, you really ought to live life about the world in quarantine to the fullest.

That’s what the spicy couple Juanita Carmelita and Peter do on a “special” private jet that they have all to themselve. The chemistry between the pair, played respectively by Dress Up Gang‘s Frankie Quinones and Donny Divanian, is pretty undeniable even if it’s potentially looks like it’s going to heat up too much, and, as such, so damn fun to bear witness to.

To even take the time here to remind you that the world is a crazy place is frankly a redundant waste of time. Coping with the insanity that we are all beset with everyday is what’s important (so we can handle whatever other insanity inevitably lies ahead) and one of the better, more reliable ways to do that is guided meditation.

Of course, guided meditation has had to switch itself up a little during the pandemic and the worldwide cultural reckoning and might be a little different than what you might now or have heard of. News
chicago comedy, experimental comedy, sketch comedy, the room, tyler jackson

As co-creator of one of the most hilariously chaotic variety shows we’ve ever seen, Late Late Breakfast, we trust in Tyler Jackson to make one hysterical whirlwind of a show when it comes to recreating the cult classic, Tommy Wiseau’s The Room, via a live-stream, with many of the best comedy folks from all over the country.

Per his announcement:

LEGALLY NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE ROOM is a complete, feature-length re-imagining of the cult classic film THE ROOM. Part parody, part loving homage, it is The Room remade by over 50 teams of artists, using whatever they had around them during the quarantine. Musicians, comedians, puppeteers, animators, and video artists transform the original film from a bizarre melodrama into a kaleidoscope of bad accents, even worse wigs, stock footage, acid trips, prank shows, body doubles, and Lynchian horror.

No matter how this goes, it ought to be a damn hysterical time and will assuredly be less insane than what reality has presented us.

Legally Not Allowed to Leave the Room is set to stream this Fri. Oct. 2nd at 6PM PT/8PM CT/9PM ET. It’ll be presented by The Hideout in Chicago and tickets are $5 (proceeds go to saving stages via NIVA). Go get more details and tickets here.

Certainly, it’s not representative of what a good percentage of people who enjoy skateboarding as a hobby look like when they’re trying to put together trick combos or find and clear those secret gaps.

The global lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic has wrought an unprecedented level of isolation and depression. The far reaching mental health effects from all of us being quarantined away from each other is more tangible than ever before.

In fact, even the COVID-19 virus itself is suffering from being cut off from any sort of life (outside of being a incredibly deadly virus).

Tim Dillon “shows” how the virus is living and how it’s feeling the loneliness like the rest of us (in addition of being a terrifying, destructive force that is unlike anything the majority of us has ever gone through). Also, Dillon shows how “man on the street” bits might go while socially distanced, especially if you have the guts to dress up as COVID-19 and walk around right now.

Pick of the Day: Matt O’Brien’s Sketch Show

April 21, 2020
News
comedy live-stream, matt o'brien, pick of the day, sketch comedy

There are few folks that we know that can whip up a green screen quite like Matt O’Brien, especially when time is of the essence. Hell, he did an entire show where he was able to use his editing skills to make up an entire visual gag with motion graphics off an audience suggestion during the length of a comedian’s showcase set. In quarantine, he has even been doing miniature remakes of individual episodes of Frasier.

Essentially, he was doing Zoom background bits before the majority of the world did video conferencing more than a few times a year, if that. Thus, we’re pretty sure O’Brien is perfectly suited for this weird time in comedy where all of it has to live and be broadcast online and the limitations of your computer or mobile devices.

Matt doing a live-stream sketch comedy show only makes us think of what he has up his sleeve and what he’ll dare to pull off during a Twitch live-stream. Thus, you can and should check out The Matt O’Brien Sketch Show going live on Twitch here this Wed. Apr. 22nd at 5PM PT/8PM ET.
