TCB Debriefing 8/2/23: Dreaming Whilst Black, Barbie in Middle East, Reservation Dogs, Caitlin Cook

August 2, 2023
News
barbie, caitlin cook, dreaming whilst black, off broadway, reservation dogs, showtime

1. First look at Showtime’s new UK dramedy, Dreaming Whilst Black, from Adjanai Salmon here. If you’ve been dreaming of Insecure with British accents, you might want to get into this starting Sun. Sept. 10th at 10PM on Showtime.

2. Barbie might be banned in the Middle East because, well, it’s probably too queer (and everything) for them (Variety), but actually might surpass that $1 billion mark that Margot Robbie dreamed of at the box office in the next few days (Deadline). That means Barbie might be the most commercially successful Oscar winner since LOTR, even without Middle East box office receipts.

3. A friendly neighborhood reminder that the critically acclaimed, award winning Reservation Dogs is back for its third and final season starting tonight on FX/Hulu.

4. The best show you’ll ever see about bathroom graffiti, The Writing’s on the Stall from Caitlin Cook is set to make it’s Off-Broadway debut at the SoHo Playhouse on Wednesdays-Saturdays in September. You will never look at bathroom art the same way ever again. Go get tix right now right here.

5. Stand-up comedy crowd work needs to evolve past asking “Where are you from?” and “What do you do for a living?”

Just Watch Matt Rogers: Have You Heard of Christmas? on Repeat Instead of a Yule Log Over and Over

December 24, 2022
News
comedy special, have you heard of christmas, holiday special, matt rogers, showtime

Let’s face it, both real and looped videos of yule logs are a thing of the past. Even with the nostalgia that’s deeply baked into the holiday season, the creation of meta “yule logs” is, perhaps, a sign we need a new thing to play over and over on Christmas (and going back to A Christmas Story or Elf might not work either).

With that in mind, there’s a new Christmas special, a comedy one at that, done up exquisitely by Matt Rogers, (after performing it annually on stages for years) gleefully titled Have You Heard of Christmas?. It’s equal parts subversive and reverent when it comes to being a holiday special and Rogers showing off his golden pipes is a lavish frosting on top of it all.

Rogers dissects the entire cottage industry that is big time actors and pop stars doing holiday specials with a scripted narrative arc shot separately from the live special (featuring great cameos from Jo Firestone and Pat Regan), then revels merrily in his disruptive riffs and takes on your time honored Christmas themes, stories, traditions for a raucous live crowd. Matt’s witty, self-aware panache does the whole special in such a marvelously satirical way that almost no one else can pull off.

So, for those reasons, make Matt Rogers: Have You Heard of Christmas? your choice to watch throughout Christmas Day and beyond (so long as you have access to Showtime and, maybe, no tiny children?).

Even though Turkey Day is just over a week away, plenty of folks, especially if you’re any sort of drug store, is already looking towards Christmas (mostly because Thanksgiving decorations aren’t really a popular thing/who buys cornucopias these days?).

With that in mind, one of the best Christmas comedy specials that will be coming, in a very crowded field of new holiday themed specials and movies, is, without a doubt, Matt Rogers: Have You Heard of Christmas? Rogers’ long-standing annual tradition of a snappy, subversive Christmas musical revue got wisely made into a special (with a bit of a narrative arc) by Showtime and you’re only going to have to wait until Dec. 2nd to be able to stream it on Showtime.

If you have been unfortunate to be able to get a ticket to Have You Heard of Christmas over the years because Matt sells those shows out whenever he does it, you can finally catch your first glimpse with the trailer for Matt Rogers: Have You Heard of Chistmas? Get into the holiday spirit the right way by watching it here.

Michael Che, Julia Fox, DeRay Mckesson, and More Will Be Latest Iconic Guests in Ziwe’s Pink Hot Seat

The first part of season 2 of Ziwe came to a close in June and it has been far too long since we’ve heard from the icon and her iconic guests (especially with Trevor Noah leaving The Daily Show and Desus & Mero and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee being over).

Thank goodness we only have to survive less than three more weeks to get what very much should be the new frontier of late night, led fearlessly in hot pink by the one and only Ziwe. This round of episodes will bring in Michael Che, Julia Fox, Amber Riley, Blake Griffin, Joel Kim Booster, Bob The Drag Queen, DeRay Mckesson, Drew Barrymore and Wayne Brady for some of the most hilariously cringe and clippable interviews as well as some of the best, unrelenting satirical bits/sketches on all of television.

(via Variety)

For years, Matt Rogers has been giving one of the best holiday gifts to audiences all over the country during the month of December, his holiday comedy musical revue, Have You Heard of Christmas?, that’s got as much panache and whip smart humor as it does Christmas cheer. We were lucky enough to catch it one year at the Hollywood Improv, long before COVID-19, and, despite us on the Grinch side of things when it comes to November/December, it was such an undeniable delight that we couldn’t help but alternate between cracking a huge smile and doubling over cackling.

Thankfully, millions of other folks (or however many people have a subscription to Showtime’s streaming service) will get to share in Matt Rogers’ amazing and hysterical version of a Christmas special. Rogers taped this Showtime special edition of Have You Heard of Christmas? at the revered stage at Joe’s Pub in NYC and roped in Las Culturistas host Bowen Yang as well as NYC comedy staples Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson into this queer-pop-Christmas spectacular.

If you’re very excited to receive such a present from Matt Rogers, you won’t even have to wait until Dec. 25th since the premiere date for Have You Heard of Chistmas? is Fri. Dec. 2nd.

Daniels Are Going from “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to a Showtime Pilot “Mason”

August 1, 2022
News

(via THR)

For how much the box office is being propped up by studio tentpoles and franchise favorites from the MCU or Top Gun: Maverick, it should be noted that the completely original, literally out-of-this-world genre-bending comedy, Everything Everywhere All at Once has exceeded expectations as A24’s highest grossing movies ever, just surpassing $100 million globally as of this post.

Daniels, the creative filmmaking duo of Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan, are riding that much deserved success from their work/the most original movie in recent memory all the way to a pilot order from Showtime that will continue in their surrealist mode. This time, the Daniels will explore the world of “a quiet man named Nathan” whose name is often misheard as Mason, while trying to connect “…in a loud world”.

So, there is hope in original stories after all and it’s thrilling to know that Daniels are leading the charge in regards to that. Between Swiss Army Man and Everything Everywhere All at Once, the pair of them have done some of the most delightful bonkers, out-there cinematic storytelling we’ve seen in the last couple of decades. Wherever Mason ends up going, we have no doubt that it’ll actually be unlike anything we’ve seen before (as opposed to that being a well-worn pull quote for run-of-the-mill action adventure movie).

Oh yeah, Showtime better pick this up especially since they just lost one of their biggest slices of their comedy programming, Desus & Mero.

If You Haven’t Already, Watch Ziwe’s Iconic Interview with Chet Hanks

News
Chet Hanks, iconic, interview, showtime, ziwe

Season 2 of Ziwe has commenced on Showtime and, already, they’ve might have shown the most iconic interview of the season with Tom Hanks’ offspring, Chet Hanks.

For all of those who got on board with Ziwe during her IG Live days, Chet Hanks does more than enough by being himself to be the sort of perfect, truly, deeply iconic guest on Ziwe (i.e. he says some of the most unhinged things while fully acknowledging his privilege of being Tom Hanks’ son). Ziwe barely has to do any “baiting” with diving incisive questioning on complicated and nuanced topics since Chet does things like not knowing Patois vocabulary while claiming to make Patois going mainstream in the States.

You, like Ziwe herself, will very likely be left speechless.

Give it a watch here, then go catch up with the rest of the season that has aired on Showtime Anytime.

Desus & Mero Try (Sort of) to Work Clean

News

Part of calling yourself the #1 show in late night is having a broad appeal across all demographics, which includes age (i.e. can you appeal to the whole family). While Desus Nice and The Kid Mero have built their reputation on artfully weaving riffs out of the bluest strings of euphemisms and expletives, they “wanted” to give working clean (i.e. seeing what being on The Tonight Show’s slot on NBC) would really be like.

As a digital exclusive, you can watch Desus & Mero somewhat try to have “good clean fun” (though they do have to contend with stories that are such easy, low hanging fruit for going dirty).

See how long they last trying to be TV clean here (spoiler alert, not even 5 min.)

For the last few years, few other comedians have ascended quite like Ziwe, writing on one of the best late night shows on the air right now, Desus & Mero, to having the hottest IG Live show during lockdown, Baited with Ziwe, to having her own groundbreaking late night variety talk show, the eponymous Ziwe.

The first season of Ziwe having the keys to her very own talk show was some of the most delectable satire in late night and this next upcoming season (streaming Fri. Apr. 29th on Showtime) is going to one-up that as you can see in this season 2 trailer here.

Ziwe will march on in her iconic mission to be unflinching in picking apart issues and celebrities (and even her own writers). This season will have Baited-ish interviews with Ilana Glazer, Chet Hanks, Nicole Byer, Hannibal Buress, Adam Pally, Charlamagne Tha God, Emily Ratajkowski, Katya Zamolodchikova, and Mia Khalifa (and the Hannibal, Ilana, and Chet ones seem like they’ll be iconic from the get go).

Truly, knowing that season 2 of Ziwe is just around the corner, Apr. 29th suddenly seems so far away and can’t come soon enough.

Here’s Your First Look at Vanessa Bayer’s Home Shopping Dramedy “I Love That For You”

March 18, 2022
News
i love that for you, matt rogers, molly shannon, showtime, vanessa bayer

For those missing Vanessa Bayer on SNL and seeing her various characters where the veneer of their reality is starting to crack, you won’t have to reminisce about seeing her back on screen in the same spirit once again.

I Love That For You centers on Bayer as an aspiring, but incredibly green host of a home shopping network and what she ends up doing to achieve that dream of telling folks that various housewares just sold out. Created by Vanessa and Jeremy Beiler, this might go a little darker than Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, but have tender, humorous moments, especially with Molly Shannon playing an iconic home shopping network host that Bayer looks up to. Also, we’re pretty sure Matt Rogers is going to be a scene stealer in this series.

This is Showtime’s latest comedy series in the ever burgeoning streaming wars and, so far, this might have the makings of something that will make you not regret paying for another streaming service or get on board for another one.

Take a first gander at all of this for yourself at I Love That For You with the first official trailer here.

Even Though You Think You Already Know It All, You Really Ought to Watch “We Need To Talk About Cosby”

February 3, 2022
News
bill cosby, documentary, showtime, w kamau bell, we need to talk about cosby

For how public Cosby’s long, long fall from grace was, it’s easy these days to make a cursory acknowledgment of how he was a monster. That line of thinking really avoids the critical work that society at large needs to do. The system and webs of complicity that allowed Cosby to operate as a deity that took sacrificial tribute in the form of drugging and raping women he desired need to be examined at such a acute degree if we all really want to move forward and never have this happen again.

Thus, it’s pretty crucial that most folks watch W. Kamau Bell’s critical and very important docu-series We Need to Talk About Cosby and his latest work to date (trigger warning to anyone sensitive to very detailed accounts of sexual assault and rape). Bell’s judicious lens painstakingly paints a devastating portrait of a man, who believed he essentially was a god, beyond reproach for any of his actions because his benevolence was plentiful (his legendary comedy career, multi-million dollar donations to HBCUs, advancing representation in entertainment for black people on all fronts, etc.). The level of detail and the wide scope of conversations (with survivors, people who worked on The Cosby Show, experts of all kinds, and, of course, comedians) presented in We Need to Talk About Cosby show that acknowledge the gravity of Cosby’s crimes and betrayal of the public trust he gained that absolutely needs to reverberate and never be forgotten.

The four episodes of We Need to Talk About Cosby accomplish its eponymous goal and digging into answering the age old question of “Can you separate the art from the artist?” and, more importantly, trying to figure out whether we should be separating the art from the artist in the first place.

We Need to Talk About Cosby is now streaming via Showtime.

Showtime’s Latest In-Depth Comedy Doc Will Be W. Kamau Bell’s We Need to Talk About Cosby

December 20, 2021
News
bill cosby, docu series, showtime, w kamau bell

Perhaps, as a titular nod to 2011’s We Need To Talk About Kevin, W. Kamau Bell has put together an entire docu-series exploring the mythos of Bill Cosby and the tragic reveal of the monster that he really is. Bell looks to explore how we’re supposed to even move forward with the knowledge that he perpetrated his sex crimes for decades and we wouldn’t believe it because he was proverbially “America’s Dad”, especially if you’re a middle aged black comedian right now.

This will be the latest in the line of documentary deep dives into the history of comedy, no matter how dark or real the territory is, by Showtime. Impressively, they’ve recently had docs on Dick Gregory and Charlie Chaplin and The Comedy Store and, from the looks of it, they’re going to keep pushing in that direction, which we’re, of course, on board for.

Get a look at We Need to Talk About Cosby and why the title is still so relevant with the series teaser here. Look for the premiere on Showtime on Jan. 30th.

On the heels of their Dick Gregory documentary, Showtime is continuing what seems to be an ongoing tour through comedy history. Their next stop is one of the very first comedy legends, Charlie Chaplin.

The silent movie star was actually many firsts, including one of the very first Hollywood stars that, unfortunately, had to deal with the weight and expectation brought about with worldwide fame. The Real Charlie Chaplin, from Peter Middleton and James Spinney, is going to delve into the life behind the silent movie star featuring plenty of interviews and reenactment footage that feels almost like a full on adapted drama of Chaplin’s life.

News
back to life, daisy haggard, season 2, showtime, trailer

Daisy Haggard, the star and creator of Back to Life, has made something truly beautiful and hysterical with this series. The first season was some of the funniest writing juxtaposed with some truly dark, poignant, honest performances that were absolutely riveting. Truly, Back to Life needs to be in the same conversations, in regards to prestige comedy, as The White Lotus and everyone else’s favorite, Ted Lasso.

We haven’t had as riveting of dramedy from across the pond since Fleabag.

The second season following Miri Matteson’s on-going struggle to readjust to life in her very small, very nosy UK town after spending several years in jail is on the way. The premiere date is set for Mon. Sept. 13th on Showtime at 10PM and, from the looks of the trailer, it could very well be every bit as brilliant as season one.

Showtime Gives Icon Ziwe the Second Season Renewal She Deserves

June 22, 2021
News
season 2, showtime, ziwe

(via Variety)

Though “iconic” is perhaps Ziwe’s ironic catchphrase and often joked about, the idea of her manifesting her own iconic status is becoming more and more actualized every week.

In case you don’t know, Ziwe already announced that she’s developing a new series at Amazon last week. This week, she got a second season order of her eponymous Showtime series that might truly shift the paradigm of late night and sketch comedy for good. Don’t forget that she has a book due out and just dropped an album of songs that come from her Showtime series. See what we’re saying?

With how far and deep the first season that Ziwe went, often taking no prisoners with its satire (her very own writing staff included), the prospect of what she’ll do with 12 episodes for season 2 is undeniably thrilling and will be one of the most anticipated things in comedy for us until it premieres.

Make no mistake though. A season 2 of Ziwe is big news and well deserved, but Ziwe is far from done with manifesting and exuding being iconic.

There’s a Whole Docu-Special on Dick Gregory That’s Coming Out on July 4th

June 9, 2021
News
dick gregory, documentary, showtime

In regards to comedy both being a bridge between worlds and speaking truth to power, the name Dick Gregory better be at the top of the list. Gregory was a comedy pioneer unlike any other, especially for all the barriers he broke down and how much irony and absurdity he pointed out in race relations and in the actions of the U.S. government. Also, you ought to know that’s just scratching the surface of what he did throughout his comedy career and his lifetime.

Thus, Showtime is giving Gregory his due with a docu-special The One and Only Dick Gregory and having it premiere on, of all days, the Fourth of July, which is fitting for how much truth he freely spoke in his comedy.

Get a taste of what’s to come with The One and Only Dick Gregory here, then look for it to premiere on Sun., July 4th at 9PM on Showtime.

Robby Hoffman Series “Rivkah” in Development at Showtime

(via Deadline)

Robby Hoffman has been a favorite of ours for awhile now with her alpha-queer energy that’s undeniably hysterical to us. Even when she is taking over The Chris Gethard Show or pivoting towards a call-in show Robby Hoffman Consulting  Group on Planet Scum, Robby has been equal parts domineering and sweet and so damn funny.

So, naturally, it’s thrilling to know that Showtime and A24 have made another smart move (their last one being ZIWE) by developing a scripted series based around Robby’s real life going between her current life as a genderqueer LA woman and her childhood as a closeted girl in a very Hasidic community in Brooklyn.

Whatever the show ends up being, we hope that it gets picked up to series so we can see what Hoffman taking a leading role (like she deserves) looks like.

Also, note that Showtime is making some strong moves with their comedy brand as they have Desus & Mero, ZIWE, and potentially Rivkah.

Ziwe Takes on Beauty Standards by Interviewing Eboni K. Williams & Her New Banger “Wet Diaper (Goo Goo Gah Gah)”

May 18, 2021
News
eboni k williams, showtime, ziwe

ZIWE is only on its second episode and it already, for our money, is in the running for one of the funniest shows of the year (and yes, we know that there’s plenty of year left).

This past Sunday, Ziwe set her sights on the topic of beauty standards and gave it her iconic ultra-subversive-while-being-meta-and-self-accountable treatment. She had a spirited back-and-forth with Eboni K. Williams, the first black cast member on Real Housewives of New York, on all things revolving beauty, especially when race comes into the picture. Again, is anyone doing as interviews as fun and wickedly clever as Ziwe?

Then, for her musical performance this week (Ziwe has been her own iconic musical guest for these first two episodes and we’re here for it), Ziwe nailed pop culture’s obsession with infantilizing women, especially when it comes to actresses and pop stars with such a hysterical ‘banger’, “Wet Diaper” (Goo Goo Gah Gah). Please enjoy it and the man feeling very uncomfortable in it here.

Again, we’ve been saying it before it premiered, as it premiered, and right here, right now: watch ZIWE (Sunday nights at 11PM on Showtime, then streaming on Showtime Anytime afterwards)

Ziwe Has Arrived on Showtime and The World Really Ought to Be Watching

May 11, 2021
News
showtime, ziwe

There’s almost a sense of certainty with ZIWE, the brand new eponymous variety/talk show series sprouted from Ziwe’s own IG Live series, Baited. Of the comedy live-stream that embarked into the unknown of this virtual era of comedy, Baited with Ziwe was lightning that struck louder and bigger every time with her interview format involving race baiting questions and deeper explorations of the biases of comedians, celebrities, influencers, many of which had been “cancelled”. Several hundred and sometimes thousands would tune in on the jankiest of all live-stream platforms, IG Live, and revel in Ziwe’s balance of poise and the iconic looks she would strike based on people’s answers or, in many cases, attempts at answers.

Even, Vulture started to recap it like it was an actual TV series (a mark, which no other live-stream, to our knowledge can really claim).

Without a doubt, it was one of the best things in comedy in 2020 and Showtime made a real smart move in giving Ziwe her own show that not only plays up her iconic ambitions (even evident in these opening credits for the show), but played to the core strengths of Ziwe’s uber-satirical sense of humor and of Baited’s devil-may-care-ish picking apart of one’s biases. The premiere of Ziwe, having just aired on Showtime this past Sunday, was brilliant and that just almost seemed inevitable.

Check her interview with Fran Lebowitz, this wonderfully bizarre American Girl Doll sketch, and her panel discussion with women all named Karen and their feelings on the pejorative term, Karen to see Ziwe’s panache and verve that makes her really stand out from the rest of the crowd (whether it be late night, talk shows, or sketch). Truly, we can’t wait to see wait what the self-styled icon does next over almost anything else on television.

ZIWE’s Official Trailer Is Here (Stop What You’re Doing/Watch/Share)

When all is said and done with this COVID-19 era of comedy, one name will shine brightly as a undeniably fiery star that rose through the trials and travails of having to do comedy virtually while the world stayed at home, fearful of what they might catch outside.

That name, of course, is the now iconic mononym, Ziwe.

Her name was already one that was on the minds of comedy circles around the country before lockdown. Ziwe was writing on Desus & Mero, put together some satirical bangers, and had done the YouTube version of her now famous, Baited. The IG Live version of the show shot her to fame as the undeniably iconic IG Live show of 2020 (even though it only ran weekly for a few months). Cornering comedians and celebrities alike with race-baiting questions was so deftly and hilariously handled by Ziwe that it scored her a book deal and the eponymous Showtime series that is set to premiere next month.

You’ll be absolutely thrilled to know that there’s more Baited to come on Ziwe (her guests include Fran Lebowitz, Adam Pally, and Cole Escola to name a few) as well as a great mix of sketches and interviews that is both the comedy that America needs AND deserves.

Get your first taste and get hooked (if not already) here. Then, set a reminder for the iconic time of Sun. May 9th at 11PM to watch the series premiere of Ziwe on Showtime.

The Kid Mero of Desus & Mero Contracted COVID-19

March 18, 2021
News
desus and mero, kid mero, showtime

Desus & Mero zooming their Showtime series through lockdown has been a blessing. Both Desus Nice and The Kid Mero had been shooting the show remotely, each from their own respective homes in NYC. In the last few weeks, they had been doing more segments that were either in person (their interview Obama) or even in studio (without an audience) with all COVID-19 protocol, but, as far as we knew, both The Bodega Boys were still COVID-19 free.

That very unfortunately changed this week as The Kid Mero tweeted out that he had contracted the infamous virus, insisting that he’s “DOING OK” and observing quarantine protocols. Again, this is another instance where taking so many precautions while shooting a TV show still did not prevent the transmission of COVID-19. There are no details as to where Mero was infected, but the fact remains that there is no 100% safe environment during the pandemic.

We hope that Kid Mero has a speedy recovery and we’d like to thank him for not calling so many of us cowards like Chappelle did for pointing out the risk of doing shows in this time.

MY PALS. POPPING ON HERE TO LET YOU KNOW YOUR BOY GOT COVID.  I’M DOING OK AND FOLLOWING ALL THE PROTOCOLS. BUT DEAD ASS STAY HOME, WEAR YOUR MASK, SOCIAL DISTANCE AND GET YOUR VACCINE IF YOURE ELIGIBLE.  STAY SAFE FAM AND SEE YOU SOON ???❤️

Ziwe Premieres May 9th on Showtime, So Clear Up Your Schedule Already

Self-styled icon Ziwe famously rose to fame at a time when we all, famously, we’re stuck at home, probably in despair via her IG Live series, Baited. To this very day, it’s probably one of the very best things that has ever been done on IG Live and it’s very likely that anything else doesn’t even come close to how vital, pointed, and hysterical it was.

From there, Ziwe had a banner year, made all the lists, got a book deal, and, famously, was bestowed with her very Showtime variety series.

The show, appropriately titled, Ziwe, is set to premiere on Sun. May 9th on Showtime. We’d highly recommend using this time until then to prepare for such a date, especially when it comes to making sure watching Ziwe’s premiere being the only thing on your schedule that Sunday.

While hiatuses are normal for late night shows, even without a pandemic, the length of a given absence feels like years because there are so many colossal events happening in the world on top of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The renewed vitality that Desus & Mero specifically bring to late night as they are so radically different from everyone else in button downs and suits compounds that feeling. Thankfully, that time is over and the Bodega Boys are back at it for their third season, going over the news in the delightfully rambunctious way that ultimately brought them to Showtime.

Their third season just kicked off yesterday and, as they have pretty much been since their days at VICE, it’s a rollicking breath of fresh air. Courtesy of Showtime, you can see for yourself for FREE as their very first episode of this season with special guest Stacey Abrams is streaming on YouTube here.
