Netflix Enlists David Spade, Fortune Feimster, and London Hughes for “Netflix After Party”, an After-Show for All of Netflix

November 12, 2020
News

(via Deadline)

For the last several years, Netflix has aimed to show its dominance over traditional TV networks by often doing things on a much larger scale than any broadcast or cable network could or would. The announcement of Netflix After Party is definitely such a move as Netflix is setting the table to have a companion after-show for not just a single show, but rather the entire streaming service.

Also, the streaming behemoth will be employing comedians, specifically David Spade, Fortune Feimster, and London Hughes (this is pretty much her intro to the U.S. hailing from the U.K.) as hosts that will riff on the boat loads of content that Netflix releases every single week across the globe. We have no doubt that other comedians as well as the typical collection of cast members, writers, etc. will be guests on the show to dish about whatever’s most popular on Netflix (i.e. it’d be The Queen’s Gambit if the show were on right now).

It has been a minute since a full-fledged after-show was introduced (minus that comedians-making-fun-of-House Hunters series that got produced at the beginning of quarantine). There have been plenty of companion podcasts as producing audio remotely is plenty safe and so much easier to pull off than an entire TV series production. However, The Netflix After Party is set to get going in 2021 when, maybe, perhaps, there might just be a vaccine and it might be an easier series to produce.

With Biden in office by that point, we’re intrigued to see if people will be more game to see comedians to make fun of TV and movies as the election, pandemic, and the cultural uprising has dominated the zeitgeist for most of 2020.

Watch The Forty-Year-Old Version Trailer, Get Charmed By It, Then Watch It on Netflix Tomorrow

October 8, 2020
News
forty year old version, netflix, radha blank

If you haven’t caught wind of her or the movie yet, NYC multi-hyphenate Radha Blank seems set to make quite the feature film debut as writer/director/star with The Forty-Year-Old Version that drops on Netflix tomorrow. It had a very nice run on the festival circuit back at a time when film festivals didn’t have to figure out whether to do all their screenings online or risk doing a limited capacity, socially distanced, masked affair. Now, it’ll have as wide as a release as a feature can have right now via Netflix.

The film follows a once-promising playwright who gets a mind to capture glory once more by venturing out as a rapper at 40, all shot in gorgeous black and white. The trailer itself is very, very promising (an unfortunate rarity in comedy movie trailers these days) with this comedic redemption story and should make you want to block out time tomorrow (or late, late tonight when it starts streaming) to watch The Forty-Year-Old Version as soon as you can.

Take a look for yourself here, then set a reminder for this Fri. 10/9 when The Forty-Year-Old Version is officially on Netflix.

Michelle Buteau’s First Hour Special “Buteaupia” Gets a Trailer

September 15, 2020
News

Michelle Buteau has had dozens and dozens of TV appearances and gigs and a handful of stand-up specials (though none an hour long until now) in all her years of being a stand-up comedian. Her unshakeable confidence and undeniably joyful exuberance has made of that very well deserved and, as such, Buteau having an hour special should have definitely happened already.

Buteau is getting her due now with Welcome to Buteaupia, her very first hour stand-up special on Netflix and it really could be the jolt of life that you need right now in lockdown.

Get your first look at Welcome to Buteaupia with this trailer here, then look for it to stream on Netflix on Tues., Sept. 29th.

Sam Jay Makes One Hell of an Hour Special Debut with “3 In The Morning”

News

When it comes to doing your first hour special as a comedian, it’s not uncommon to do a greatest hits, perhaps, play it a little safe and wandering through well-trodden territory with material that has been tested with success over and over.

That is not what Sam Jay did with her very first hour special on Netflix, 3 In The Morning. Sam made one of the boldest, self-assured hour debuts that we can remember ever seeing. On her album Donna’s Daughter and her 15 min. special on Netflix’s Comedy Line-up, Jay showed her penchant for being an unfiltered and succinct hysterical truth teller.

There’s plenty of that from the get go in 3 in the Morning in talking about the love of her life and gender roles for lesbians. Jay takes even bigger risks, and does so confidently later on. There is plenty of tension, some of which she even calls out, when it comes to discussing trans people and airing her grievances with the #MeToo movement in the latter half of the special, but she forcefully snaps said tension with quite the punch at the end. Jay’s confidence from wire-to-wire is commanding and keeps you fixated on her and stories and bits, no matter how dark they might get. Jay’s a rare talent for how she pulls off running, not walking, on a comedy tight rope.

Sam Jay: 3 in The Morning is now streaming on Netflix and you can go stream it right now if you haven’t already.

“Sam Jay: 3 In The Morning” Netflix Special Trailer Is Here

The descriptors of “unfiltered”, “raw”, and “honest” get thrown around quite a bit in comedy these days. So many comics are described in such a way that it can be hard to not only suss out what that might mean and, more importantly, who is really damn funny while being “unfiltered”, “raw”, and “honest”.

For our money, Sam Jay is truly an embodiment of what is to truly be such and honest and raw and unapologetic comedian and do so deftly and hilariously. You’ll get to see an hour of that with her upcoming special, 3 In The Morning, coming to Netflix next month on Tues. Aug. 4th.

Get a bit of look of what Sam will be serving up with this trailer here

Netflix Is a Joke Fest Is Cancelled for 2020

July 10, 2020
News
comedy festival, los angeles, netflix, netflix is a joke, netflix is a joke fest

It’s pretty much a foregone conclusion than any sort of big festival that had been slated for most of 2020 is getting cancelled or, at best, postponed to 2021. That includes the inaugural run of Netflix’s big time comedy festival Netflix Is a Joke Fest that was going to be one of the notable comedy events that Los Angeles was going to be home to in quite some time.

Originally, Netflix Is a Joke Fest was going to happen just over a month after lockdown went into effect in Los Angeles. Then, it was postponed for later this year without very many other details. Now, as LA has suddenly turned into a hot spot for COVID-19, the streaming giant announced their decision to nix the festival entirely on this go around. Full refunds will be issued unlike other major festivals that have cancelled like SXSW, but as to what else might happen with Netflix Is a Joke Fest is a mystery at this point.

In fact, Netflix added in their announcement, “We will come back with something extra special, but until then, please stay safe.”

For the rest of the 2020 for comedy in LA, there are some shows that are lined up in October, but it’s best to think of those as tentative at this point.

Dadaism Is Alive and Well in Eric Andre’s “Legalize Everything”

June 24, 2020
News
eric andre, legalize everything, netflix

The tenets of Dadaism (absurdist, abstract, illogical, anti-capitalist) line-up pretty damn close to the comedy of Eric Andre. The Eric Andre Show is as bonkers of a reaction against the traditional late night talk show as could be imagined and fits in line with the art movement that rose to prominence in the late 1910s and 1920s (oh, just another time when the world was at each other’s throats and there was a global pandemic).

This new hour special Legalize Everything from Andre is an ever clearer cut example of dadaist comedy 100 years after the movement started. Andre zips all over the place at a frenetic pace, but manages to hammer the subversive, anti-authority message (the title is “Legalize Everything” after all) throughout. Expertly and hilariously deconstructing the mythos of the show COPS with giant act outs to commenting, satirically contrasting the evils of factory farming with sexual desire, and also doing a whole bit on the lasting harm done by theologian John Calvin altogether make for something that feels more absurd and pointed than your general absurdist comedy. Even his story about going to a sex worker in Amsterdam, which seems pretty grounded at first takes a non-sequitur turn.

Dadaism rose under somewhat similar circumstances to 2020 and perhaps the time for Andre’s grandiose, wild visions of our world is right for the world that we’re in now. Go see Legalize Everything for yourself and enjoy Eric’s latest hour and see it as it’s now streaming on Netflix.

Teaser for Eric Andre’s “Legalize Everything” Points Out the Absurdity of the Recently Cancelled Show “Cops”

June 12, 2020
News
comedy special, cops, eric andre, legalize everything, netflix, stand up

The works of Eric Andre over the last few years have been so outlandish and absurdist that one might forget about his stand-up, which is also wonderfully outlandish and absurd. That’ll all be put on display in his upcoming special Legalize Everything coming to Netflix on Tues. Jun. 23rd and you can see how bombastic Andre can get with just himself and a microphone.

This teaser was just released in promotion of the special and just happened to be so timely with all the mass protests again police brutality as Andre satirically paints a picture of how insane the long-running show known as Cops really is. We’ve seen Eric Andre do this bit for so many years, one might wonder why the reality docu-series Cops only got its run ended only now, in June of 2020. Watch it here, and, obviously, set a reminder for Jun. 23rd for Legalize Everything.

Dave Chappelle’s Drops “8:46”, a Raw 27 Min. Special About George Floyd’s Murder in 8 Minutes and 46 Seconds

June 12, 2020
News

First, just go watch it. It’s free on YouTube here.

The moment we’re living in is one of extended, acute trauma. It’s everything happening all at the same time, bearing down on the entire globe.

So, what is comedy’s purpose in this time, especially when it has been already redefining itself as an art form under the COVID-19 pandemic? It’s a question that we have been pondering for weeks, especially since having the energy to attempt to be funny seems to be on short supply.

Cue Dave Chappelle and his nearly half-hour special 8:46 that was recorded only last week (outside with a socially distanced crowd in face masks) and released last night. Chappelle has never shied away from talking about crucial issues in his stand-up, sometimes in a controversial way, but he has gotten lengthier in his analysis of them in these years, especially when he released his first special after leaving Chappelle’s Show.

8:46, of course, denotes the amount of time that Derek Chauvin had his knee on George Floyd’s neck murdering him in broad daylight with three other officers standing passively by him. That is the entire focus of the Chappelle’s set, which Dave notes is material that he’s working out. It is as raw as Chappelle has ever gotten and often it’s not necessarily hysterical, but that is sort of the point. The tension is clear and we’re all meant to sit in it as we have been to feel it together within a space that is normally reserved for well-crafted bits, jokes, and social satire met with laughter and applause.

However, it’s illuminating in a way that comedic thinking can often highlight contradictions. In 8:46, Dave makes a brilliant connection between the saga of Christopher Dorner and George Floyd and the global outcry for justice. Ironically, Chappelle even confesses that he shouldn’t even be the one speaking out as the streets are doing a much better job of that. Dave utilizes the platform of 8:46 as a “comedy special” to juxtapose, as comedy so expertly does, disparate things that, actually, may be not be so disparate for a salient point. For now, that’s definitely something comedy can do in this historical moment.

Netflix Takes Down Select Chris Lilley Series Due to Use of Brownface

June 10, 2020
News
bbc, brownface, chris lilley, netflix

(via Deadline)

After the announcement of Little Britain being taken down on streaming services because of racist portrayals of POCs, streaming services going through their entire archives to clean house in regards to shows and content that hasn’t aged all that well, especially at a time where anti-racism is on everyone’s mind, shouldn’t come as a surprise.

The latest shows to come under this sort of scrutiny all come from Australia’s Chris Lilley. Specifically, Jonah From Tonga, Summer Heights High, We Can Be Heroes, and Angry Boys have all been taken off of Netflix for featuring characters, often Lilley himself (especially in Jonah From Tonga), in brownface or depictions of other races. Other series from Lilley that don’t feature Lilley in a bunch of brown make-up will remain on Netflix including Ja’mie Private School Girl.

Both Little Britain and all of these shows have been out now for years and their removal is a sign of what’s to come in changing the media landscape to be clearly anti-racist, especially after several days of BLM protests across the world. That being said, BBC is keeping a handful of these Lilley series, namely Summer Heights High and We Can Be Heroes on their streaming platform as well as a music video where Lilley invokes the use of the N-word.

Undoubtedly, there will be several weeks, if not months, of corrective behavior and apologies for all sorts of shows, movies, etc. and many of those will undoubtedly be in the realm of comedy that attempted to shock or provoke. The effect of such a gesture might be a tad bit performative in the long run, so we’re more curious to see what Hollywood, and the world at large for that matter, will do going forward (seriously producing and promoting more diverse BIPOC voices and the stories they want to tell, the way they want to tell them would be a pretty great start).

Hannah Gadsby’s “Douglas” Is a Very Satisfying Follow-Up to Her Historic Special “Nanette”

May 26, 2020
News
comedy special, hannah gadsby, netflix, stand up

If you’re reading this, you have no doubt watched Hannah Gadsby‘s lighting rod, milestone hour special Nanette, which debuted on Netflix in 2018, rippling the very fabric of comedy and amplifying the conversation about sexual violence against women.

The follow-up to that hour is saddled with a unique sort of anticipation that even stands apart for Chappelle’s grand return to stand-up comedy a few years ago. There was so much debate about whether Nanette could even be considered a comedy, an opinion almost exclusively voiced by men who probably felt attacked or rudely awakened in some way by Gadsby’s show. Thus, the expectations for the new special are kilometers higher (Gadsby makes a great point of not bending too much to American whims in Douglas) than they were before.

So, how do you follow your own historic comedy special? Well, just make another damn good special. That’s exactly what happened with this new hour Douglas from Gadsby.

This time around, Hannah shows just how masterful she is at managing expectations. In fact, she even “shows her hand before playing it” by offering up an outline of her hour and giving notes to her critics all before she gets it started. Layered into that is her explicit message that she’s letting all of us know what she’s going to do, therefore taking comedy’s crucial element of surprise away, and still presenting an exquisite hour of comedy. To pull off comedy without the surprise really shows how undeniable your persona, writing, delivery, and command of the audience really is (i.e. how great of a comedian you really are).

The weaving of clever, yet still subversive observations on America, some of the best art history jokes that comedy has ever or will ever have, a continuation of the great, fiery teardown of the patriarchy, enlightening material on autism altogether are so arrestingly delivered by Gadsby that it doesn’t matter that you might know what’s coming during this whole performance. Nanette turned the notion of tension on its head and Hannah has now moved on to deconstructing and turned the concept of expectation on its head for Douglas.

If you’re to draw a divide between American style stand-up and the more solo-show, narrative-based hours of the UK and Australia, Gadsby has successfully made a blend of the two. Douglas absolutely takes the baton from Nanette in form and content, but Gadsby makes a comedy special that is hysterical throughout that answers her critics on her own terms even though she absolutely doesn’t need to.

Hannah Gadsby: Douglas is now streaming on Netflix and you really ought to go watch it as soon as you can.

FYI, Patton Oswalt’s I Love Everything Is Now Streaming on Netflix (and It Should Go on Top of Your Watch List)

Take an hour to enjoy the signature whimsy and colorful imagery and niche details that is the comedy of Patton Oswalt with his latest hour special. I Love Everything is another hour carefully crafted by Oswalt and delivers on the aforementioned expectations, but also, for the times that we’re living in, truly takes you away from the terrifying reality that we’re stuck with.

The title itself “I Love Everything” isn’t just a put on. Oswalt goes through so many of his loves whether it be Star Wars, Denny’s, or, of course, his family. There is an explicit positivity running throughout the special and it’s charming without being overbearing. In fact, it makes you think of how much Oswalt’s material over the last few specials have actually been about the things he loves dearly including the late Michelle McNamara or a rose test garden.

Comedy can be derived from celebration of whatever brings you joy. I Love Everything definitely pushes that agenda further than Patton has before and makes for a heartwarming hour of stand-up that’s still incredibly erudite. In the middle of the special Patton emphatically repeats a phrase, “Run at love.” It’s not a punchline or even the whole of a premise, but it’s the spirit of I Love Everything, making for an endearing hour that will at least get us through another week in quarantine.

Patton Oswalt: I Love Everything is now streaming on Netflix.

The reverberations of Hannah Gadsby‘s last special Nanette can still be felt years after its release on Netflix. Even as the release of her next special Douglas is just a few weeks away, Gadsby herself is still surprised the profound impact that her groundbreaking lightning rod of a special had, the worldwide notoriety that came along with it.

Thus, this next hour is absolutely one of the most highly anticipated comedy specials of this year. From this first, full official trailer, we have a suspicion that it will deliver (especially after the final joke in said trailer).

Look for Hannah Gadsby: Douglas is set to stream on Tues. May 26th on Netflix.

“Space Force” Teaser Shows Steve Carell as Boss of an Office Again (Though Much More Dangerous Than Dunder Mifflin)

May 5, 2020
News

An argument could be made that Steve Carell knows how to play a conflicted boss type better than almost any one just off his performance as Michael Scott on The Office.

With that in mind, it’s very exciting to see Carell in another boss role that’s set in an office in Netflix’s upcoming satirical comedy from Steve Carell and Greg Daniels, Space Force, based on Trump’s real life, newly created branch of the U.S. military. In this office, the stakes are much, much higher than they would be at Dunder Mifflin and Carell isn’t necessarily the main source of the strife so much as it’s emanating from the circumstances he was placed in. Space Force actually seems a little closer in DNA to Veep than The Office, though we’ll see when Space Force premieres given Daniels and Carell being so closely tied to the American version of The Office. Still, Carell returning to being the series lead in a comedy is pretty damn enticing.

See all of this for yourself in Space Force teaser here.

The last special that Hannah Gadsby released, Nanette, was such a lightning rod of a comedy special that will forever live on as a landmark piece of culture from our time. Its agenda and execution were so powerful that it sparked a discussion about comedy for months and months as well as furthering the global conversation about sexual assault/harassment sparked from #MeToo.

So, her next special Douglas is due out on Netflix on Tues., May 26th and if you can imagine how much the world’s attention turned to Gadsby the first time when she got catapulted from being renowned in Australia to international acclaim, you can surely imagine how highly anticipated this next hour of stand-up will be.

Over the last several specials that Patton Oswalt has released, Patton has always served up a very handily crafted, great hour of stand-up. Get Your First Look at Middleditch and Schwartz’s Improv Specials Coming to Netflix

April 7, 2020
News

When it comes to televised improv, all that most people have seen or known about is the short form improv institution that is Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Yet, Middleditch & Schwartz might just get to that status very soon. The duo made up of Thomas Middleditch and Ben Schwartz have toured together around the globe as, perhaps, one of the most successful long form improvisational comedy acts of all time, creating hysterical scenes and having a solid, surprising narrative arcs seemingly out of nowhere.

So, Middleditch & Schwartz are about to make television history with a full-fledged long form improv (scenes get improvised just off a suggestion versus short form improv that relies on very specific games that have very specific rules to improvise through) comedy special. That comes after reaching milestones like having continuously sold-out performances at Largo, touring everywhere, and playing Carnegie Hall.

Seeing how they’ll make that translate into a comedy special given the ephemeral nature of improv will undoubtedly be fascinating (and probably why they’re releasing three performances of them). You can get your first look at what that might look like with this trailer here, then look for them to drop on Tues., Apr. 21st on Netflix.

So, now is about as good a time as ever to find out that the landmark sitcom Community created by Dan Harmon will not only be on one streaming service, but, due to a nifty deal that Sony Pictures TV struck, be available on both Hulu and Netflix. The series is already on Hulu and will begin streaming on Netflix on Apr. 1st.

There are six seasons to watch and maybe this will lead to #sixseasonsandamovie becoming a reality.

The Midnight Gospel Teaser Hints at Netflix Animation Getting as Trippy as It Has Ever Been

Combining the otherworldliness of both Pendelton Ward, creator of Adventure Time, and comedian Duncan Trussell can only amount to something super trippy, wildly colorful, and mischievously subversive. To be those things at Netflix (considering their animation line-up already including BoJack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie, and LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS) is quite a feat.

Thus, The Midnight Gospel has been born or, rather, is set to be born on April 20th when all episodes stream on Netflix.

While Marc Maron has been very successfully pushing forward on the fronts of being an actor and one of podcasting’s biggest icons, Maron has thankfully, during all that time, kept to one of the things he does best, stand-up.

His dissection of his own anxieties as well as those of the world over his last several hours are real comedy gems. This latest special End Times Fun seems to promise that streak will keep going.

Tom Segura Set For Two Netflix Comedy Specials, One in English and One in Spanish

Tom Segura Set For Two Netflix Comedy Specials, One in English and One in Spanish

Arguably, doing comedy in another language other than your native tongue could be the highest mark of fluency in that language. Not only do you have to understand speech, grammar, pronunciation, slang, idioms, etc., but you have to be able to play with them in a way that’s particularly obtuse for comedy (oh yeah, you already have to be funny too).

This is happening more and more these days with the likes of Gad Emaleh, Rafi Bastos, Carmen Lynch, and, of course, Eddie Izzard (he’s done some of his hours in at least three different languages if not more)

Tom Segura is indeed already one of the funniest comedians working today and has been bilingual for pretty much his whole life. So, it stands to reason that, in addition to a brand new English language stand-up special, that he would eventually do one in Spanish, which he is currently crafting right at this very moment.

The English special is set for Netflix streaming on Mar. 24th and the Spanish one will come out later this year. We’re so curious as to what that might be, sound like, feel like (though we’re sure Segura’s cutting observational humor will still shine through).

Ben Schwartz Announces Middleditch & Schwartz Specials to Premiere on Netflix

Last year, Ben Schwartz and Thomas Middleditch took what very well may be one of the the most successful improv groups of all time, Middleditch + Schwartz, and taped multiple performances for the purposes of a comedy special. Long form improv on TV is a rare thing to see, but leave it to Ben and Thomas to figure out how to really make it work.

During his appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers last night, Schwartz announced that there will be three different specials capturing three different performances by Middleditch + Schwartz coming to Netflix soon.

These specials could be very well break new ground for long form improv, largely a discipline in comedy that only gets seen live and we personally, really can’t wait to see what the two have cooked up together in the moment.

Titmouse Animation Signs Overall Deal at Netflix

Netflix has done quite well with its adult animated series offerings including Big Mouth, BoJack Horseman, and F Is For Family.

So, they’re dipping their toes deeper into the adult animation pool with this overall deal with Titmouse Animation, the studio behind Big Mouth as well as the upcoming trippy adult animated series, The Midnight Gospel (that just so happens to be set to stream at Netflix in the not so distant future).

As far as we can see, Netflix really wants to be a 1-for-1 synonym for television, though the proliferation of streaming services is making this goal of TV domination a whole lot harder. At the very least, Netflix can dominate little pockets here and there and they definitely have become one of the dominant players in the adult animation space along side Adult Swim and Fox.

In any case, we’re very very curious to see what Titmouse comes up with under this deal and how much they’ll push the envelope.

Kevin Hart’s Netflix docu series intends to show Kevin confronting his past and present and future via tons of footage from all years of his life (and plenty of the present day non-stop, go-go-go, lifestyle he keeps up now).

Seeing Kevin get vulnerable and diving into his past is pretty intriguing, especially in how his mother and father have informed his life these days. Also,  the sheer scale at which Kevin Hart runs his entertainment empire is pretty damn captivating. Balancing, stand-up, running his own comedy brand Laugh Out Loud, starring in movies, hardcore workouts, his family, recording podcasts/doing radio, and so much more, we’ve perhaps never got inside look of the life of one of the biggest draws around that happens to be a comedian.

Kevin Hart: Don’t F**k This Up is now streaming on Netflix.
