Along with his WTF podcast getting bigger every week, not to mention the tour it’s going on, as well as his upcoming IFC show “Maron”, Marc Maron now has written a book of memoirs entitled Attempting Normal.

This book will undoubtedly be filled with the stories we all want to read in detail of the peaks and valleys of Maron’s comedy career, not to mention that pitch perfect cover photo. You can pre-order a copy now before it comes out Tues. Apr. 30th.

Company ‘Personal Audio’ Claiming Patent Infringement Against Podcasters

Apparently, trolling has extended to patents where an individual or company will try to file a law suit based on a patent they have that don’t use. Marc Maron, Adam Carolla, and Jesse Thorn have been targeted like this by Personal Audio specifically, almost in a predatory way.

Normally We Hate Cruises, But The Atlantic Ocean Comedy & Music Festival Sounds Delightful

Setting sail at the tail end of Summer thanks to MaximumFun.org, Splitsider, and KCRW, The Atlantic Comedy & Music Festival will feature three nights of of Maria Bamford, John Hodgman, Marc Maron, Eugene Mirman, Kristen Schaal & Kurt Braunohler, and much more. Yes, it’ll cost a pretty penny or many more than that, but definitely would be our cruise trip of choice if we we’re going to spend for being on a boat.

Hopefully, this will redefine the stereotypes of being a cruise ship comedian.

1) Louis C.K. honoring George Carlin.

2) Here’s a trailer for Marc Maron: The Voice of Something, a documentary by Jodi Lennon following Marc Maron in NYC right after 9/11. Basically, you’re going to watch it whenever it comes out.

3) Bradley Fojas claims the following video is a waste of five and a half minutes of your life. Maybe it is, but at least it’s hysterical.

4) Tonight on the late night circuit, Aubrey Plaza will be on Conan (TBS 11PM) and Don Rickles will be on Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC 12AM).

5) He hasn’t tweeted yet, but I’m sure James Adomian will be hilarious on Twitter. Follow @JAdomian.

The Comedian’s Guide to Feeling Better About Trying To Make It In Comedy

September 1, 2011
Uncategorized
comedy, dan harmon, fx, guide to, inspiration, ira glass, louis c.k., marc maron, patton oswalt, self help, wtf podcast

It’s no secret that there is a great deal of personal mental strain that comedians go through, often self-inflicted, despite having “making people laugh” in their job description.  While self-help books are often a popular topic for jokes and I’ve surprised other comedians by not having ever entered therapy, any person legitimately doing comedy would tell you that any whisper of encouragement, even if not specifically directed at them, is more than welcome.

Over the last few months, such symbolic “pats on the back” and sincere echoes of “keep at it and believe in yourself” have popped up online and have given credence to the aforementioned claim of insecurity by comedians.  The following is a collection of those metaphorical motivational posters in the form of podcasts, quotes, videos, etc. that might make you more feel comfortable along the road to answering the question:

What the fuck am I doing trying to make strangers laugh?

1) Marc Maron’s Just For Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival Keynote Address

2) Louis C.K. and the Joan Rivers episode of Louie

3) Dan Harmon (Creator of NBC’s Community) on meeting George Gallo, writer of Midnight Run, the dilemma of being creative, and nominations.

4) “It took me until my 40s to realize it: There’s no destination. There’s no getting anywhere. There’s just the going. The key to life is to make the going really fun. Because people that are like, “If I just get to this, then boom!” And then they get there and there’s this dawning of an afterwards. Whereas I’m just always in the going. And it’s not a frantic going like, “I gotta keep going or I’m gonna go nuts!” I can not do anything for weeks or months if I need to and just sit and read books or watch movies. I’m just as fine consuming and absorbing new art as I am trying to make it. But it’s all in the going.”

–Patton Oswalt in A.V. Club Interview

5) Ira Glass, though not strictly talking about comedy, encourages new artists.

Marc Maron’s “This Has To Be Funny” Doesn’t Need the Disclaimer

August 24, 2011
Uncategorized
comedy central records, conan, jfl, marc maron, montreal, reviews, stand up comedy

In prefacing the formal introduction, the album starts with Maron saying, “Let’s do an honest sound check.” Like everything that follows, it’s raw, but profound, and hysterical.

For all those who have marginally liked Marc Maron, listened to his WTF podcast more for the guests than him, can only take Maron going solo in doses, please take a listen to “This Has To Be Funny”.  Almost a resolution mentally, emotionally, even therapeutically to his previous albums, Marc Maron somehow maintains his neuroses while making peace with them at the same time. This is the album that people, whether they know it or not, have been waiting for Maron to put out.

In the very first track, Maron does an honest sound check voicing the pervading disappointments in his life while checking levels for the mic. It’s not only an endearing way to start the journey down his “pit of self”, but it’s also a moment of honesty that is refreshing, even for fans of Maron.  Despite having things finally swing in Marc’s favor with the popularity of his podcast, Maron still can’t handle it and it’s hilarious.

Maron has always pushed the limits of how close to personal tragedy in order to find the humor, but in “This Has To Be Funny”, he comes right to the very edge of where the line is.  Though filled with crafted jokes, punchlines, clever metaphors, and even points where Marc reaches a point of notable lyrcism, Maron delves into his flurry of seemingly destined to fail relationships, fractured interactions with his family all without apology to those listening, though not really needing one. Getting to the visceral silences, especially in talking about his mom or current girlfriend, are really the gems of the album because that’s when Maron goes for and gets the biggest laughs.

Even at a point where he invokes the name of the album by reassuring an audience member that this indeed has to be funny, it’s undeniable that everyone is on for the ride narrated by Marc’s self-loathing inner monologue no matter where it goes because it indeed is going to be funny. If you’re just using his appearances on Conan as a preview, there’s more than just cats and significant others.  He runs through an entire spectrum of topics all the way from his forever dysfunctional parents to an uproarious story about shit, dicks, and roto-rooters to an enlightening visit to the Creationist Museum.  While making light out to the darkest corner of his subconscious, Marc has offered proof on the CD of the words in his keynote address at the Just For Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival where he says that comedy has both ruined and saved his life.

The prospect of witnessing someone coming to terms with their issues may not sound the most appealing when it comes to a comedy CD, but that’s a testament to Marc Maron, his comedy, and the understanding of people that he’s reached in order to inspire laughter that’s not only hardy, but memorable.  If it wasn’t, I imagine that This American Life’s Ira Glass wouldn’t have contributed to the liner notes in physical copies of the album.

zachdionne:

I wrote about the WTF with Marc Maron podcast for GQ’s comedy issue in July. It ended up as an iPad-only bonus and I’ve had the PDF forever but am just now remembering to share it with you guys. I was so thankful to have the opportunity to write this (what up, master editress Lauren Bans!) and even more so to be able to hand a printout of the piece to Maron in person at his last Bell House gig in Brooklyn. Marc more openly gracious than I had any right to expect.

Hope you dig the piece. Maybe clicking it will make it bigger/more readable? [Edit: No, it won’t. Boo.]

5) Comedy Bang Bang has a blog about their podcast?!? Alternative comedy gone ever more self-reflexive…

6) Speaking of self-reflexive, this video by “comedy artist” by Charlotte Young was posted by the Daily What several days ago, but  who hasn’t thought they were bullshitting whatever they were saying at least once while on stage? Only the other week, I could have swore that I said on stage, “I have material that works, I swear."

7) This isn’t LA comedy exactly, but it’s pretty fuckin’ hilarious: Kurt Braunohler and the World Wild of Animals.

1) A few months ago, Joe Wengert’s character Mr. Girardi went viral with his speech about the misuse of the bulletin board at his frozen yogurt shop.  Thanks to the very talented and funny Brandon Vaughn, we now have a pretty clear picture, actually a pretty fantastic one if you ask us… (watch the clip then look at the pic)

2) One of our favorite web series finally has a new episode: Anne Frankly (w/Jamie Lee and Shawn Pearlman)

3) Anthony Jeselnik is on Conan tonight.  Watch or DVR or whatever you have to do to watch.  11PM/TBS.

4) Curtiss Angel, Criss Angel’s cousin… Thanks to Andre Hyland and his constant hilarity.

Here’s some shots of all ten completed light boxes. The Maron light box sold on eBay over the weekend and I’m shipping it off tomorrow, so I thought I’d get a couple shots of all of them together. I’ve already begun painting the next group but I want to wait until I have at least five painted before showing them off, so expect more pictures in a couple days.

If expendable income was a thing that I had, I would totally get this.

Comedians always say to me, ‘I don’t know where to go. Do I go to New York or do I go to L.A.?’ I say, ‘Look, if you want to continue training, go to New York. If you think you’re ready to get in the ring, go to L.A.’ You can’t hide in L.A. The business is everywhere. Whatever you do onstage is going to be seen by somebody, and it’s going to be talked about to somebody.

Tompkast, WTF! w/Marc Maron, The Nerdist, The Smartest Man in the World w/Greg Proops, Comedy Death Ray Radio, and more that we all should probably listen to, Rolling Stone almost makes up for the garbage “Top 100 Guitarists of All Time” list they put out every year.

8) Yesterday, the Comedy Bureau posted the article, “Why are THEY on the Show?” about the unfortunate trading of spots on shows that happens in LA and some readers were wondering a few things.  Specifically, The Comic’s Comic wondered about comics who struggle to get stage time starting their own room.  I have no problem with other comics starting their own room to get their own stage time if they can’t get it elsewhere.  Again, I reiterate stay away from trading spots.  Whether they are good or bad as comics is a matter of subjectivity to me really, but, as I point out in the article, if they can find an audience of their own, my opinion doesn’t really matter.  Another reader wondered that if a person works the Haha, Ice House, Comedy Store, Improv that they should get a shot at performing at another room.  First off, there are plenty of comics that are (and I’m putting this very politely) raw that get to perform at all of those clubs.  Once more, as I pointed in the article, plenty of comics can get laughs, but if they’re not funny to the booker, why should the booker put them up?  Last week, I saw someone do nothing but offensive material jumbling up the most controversial topics to date (i.e. Libya, Tsunami, and Liz Taylor’s Death) into one dick joke ridden mess and kill.  Did I laugh? I didn’t even smile.  Just because this comic happened to do good on a certain night because they had a good spot on the show, I don’t feel obligated or guilted to promote their comedy as, plain and simple, I don’t find them funny.  If you have any further questions regarding this article or anything else, please send them to thecomedybureau@gmail.com.
