The front page of Yahoo.com, because “Fuck you, everyone” just doesn’t meet their expectations of subtlety.
I’m not looking for the masterminds behind a free email service to break down the way of the world, but TOAST? The headline, five days after a world catastrophe, in the midst of a Middle Eastern revolution, while soldiers are still dying in an unjust war, while our country still bobs up and down in state of instability, and the headline is fucking TOAST? How about “We’re gonna take a day off so as not to offend you with how blatantly we’ve checked-the-fuck-out of day to day existence?” No, still need to run a story. Here’s how to make toast.
Oh, motherfucker.
BRING ME THE HEAD OF WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SAYING “YEAH, GO AHEAD AND RUN THE TOAST PIECE.”
Japan’s earthquake/tsunami is not a message from God, as Glenn Beck would like you to think. I can accept that. If it’s true, that God is trying to warn us for being un-Christianly, it means God’s a fucking prick and fuck him anyway. If it’s false, it means Glenn Beck’s a frothing moron. Either way, the point is made. Either God is real and he sucks or God is fake and his believers have shit-for-brains. Personally, I think Japan’s earthquake/tsunami, while undeniably tragic, is the way the Earth and it’s scientific make-up works. Sometimes it’s beautiful and sometimes it’s horrific, but nature is unpredictable. We need to just rally and find a common goal, which is to just help out your neighbor. It’s 2011, and now “neighbor” means “everyone.” Yahoo deciding to put on it’s front page HOW TO MAKE FUCKING TOAST is a sign that we, as a culture, as a species, as a creation of circumstance and biology, have reached a point TO CALL IT QUITS. I mean, it’s not even an article on how to make bread—it’s an article on how to strategically burn bread. It’s an entire write-up on how to accurately destroy, to a degree, something that is heralded as a benchmark of human accomplishment.
Glenn Beck can ease up on this fictional “God” that’s giving us warning signs that the end is near. We’re providing them for ourselves. And the number of people that actually believe Glenn Beck as a truth-teller is one of the most glaring signs of all.
Glenn Beck is not a prophet, but a sign of the apocalypse.
Of course, sometimes Jesus does show up in a piece of toast…

My dumb face is going to be on the teevee again Thursday, March 24th at midnight on the John Oliver Stand-Up Show.
Also, Mash-Up premieres this Friday, March 11th, at midnight.
After all this I will fade away.
Yeah, what Kyle Kinane said… I’ll remind all of you-s about Mash Up tomorrow as well.
The Battle of 1739 (Public House)
Amidst almost every monday night in Los Angeles where any expectations have faded under the muted rumblings of never-ending traffic, I wondered to myself, “It’s 10:17. Should I go to Public House yet?”
For as long as I can remember since going up to Los Angeles proper for comedy, I tended to end my Monday nights late at a comfy little hipster bar known as 1739 Public House for JC Coccoli’s wonderful stand up comedy showcase Keep it Clean Comedy, affectionally abbreviated by those in-the-LA-comedy-know as just “Public House”. It’s a place where some of Los Angeles’ best, both of the established and up n’ coming variety, go up and perform to varying crowds of hipsters, struggling artists of various media, some celebrities and industry members of varying stature, and a significant and consistent showing of the LA comedy community. If there were to be a Frommer’s guide to live comedy in LA, they would have to feature Public House as the “secret” late night spot tucked away in the hippest parts of town on Monday nights where comedy really happens.
On the late night of March 7th, 2011, Public House transcended its reputation as it was more than just a night of comedy, but a night that will live on as one of those “were you there…?”, “did you hear…?”, “remember that one night at…?” types of nights. It was not only the most hilarious and tense experiences of comedy I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of, but it was a rare night where by the end, you can legitimately say, “Comedy was victorious.”
After a quick great 5 minutes from Eric Andre preparing for Lopez Tonight, a fun poking at a group of Green Peace promoters by Dave Hanson, and a lovely and always hilarious delving into the relationship exploits of Abbey Londer, one Sean Green took the stage to a relatively attentive, but packed crowd at Public House.
As it is a bar comedy show, there is some of amount of talking that happens, which JC does a great job of trying to “shush” as much as possible, but about 2 minutes into Sean’s set, a drunk typical of the Los Feliz neighborhood Public House is located in with his wrinkled plaid collared shirt and jeans, jeered randomly at one of Sean’s jokes. Rolling with wherever the moment takes him, Sean went over to high five him only to, moments later, engage in an unwanted conversation with him, then, shockingly getting dry-humped by the heckler on stage. After a good 20 seconds that felt like 10 minutes, this heckler stopped the sexually over-suggestive motions, but then resumed the conversation about a book of Russian Tattoos that the heckler just had at his disposal in his pocket. Despite Sean repeatedly asking the guy to cease talking to which the heckler resumed the dryhumping until Sean forcibly pushed him away to his where his original position.
Despite the behavior on display just a few seconds earlier by the heckler, the crowd found out that he actually had a girlfriend that equally “gave two shits” about the show taking place as she yelled out something along the lines of “You suck!” to Sean. The manager of 1739 Public House stepped in at this point and only a few seconds later, a rally of “Get Out!” was being chanted by the wholly attentive room. The heckler responded with a flurry of “fuck you” and stiffly raised middle fingers to anyone in his immediate vicinity including the manager. He was finally to the delight of everyone in this establishment kicked out. There was some muffled back-and-forth during this portion of the show, but, for whatever reason, there was a distinct shift in chants from “Get Out!” to “Change your hair!” before the tossing of the heckler.
Seeing what just happened, any sensible person could see what would happen if they took on the comedian, which is still Sean Green, on stage. Any sensible person could see that they would promptly be met with the disgust of at room full of people intoxicated enough to take drastic action if necessary.
Yet, a 50 year-old looking man wearing cargo shorts, a yellow hoodie, and a craggy face that seemed worn of any sort of compassion for humanity opted to not observe the situation as a sensible person. As Sean was still trying to set up a bit about Charlie Sheen that has been applauded at other venues, this second heckler shouted, “When are you going to start being funny?”.
The crowd, as a unit now, collectively groaned as we had chanced upon the one-in-a-million chance where a horribly drunk heckler would be followed by yet another horribly drunk even worst heckler while the same comedian was on stage. Wanting merely to just go through his material, Sean tried to take the high road by relating to the second heckler through asking, “What’s wrong, man?”
This second heckler who appeared so faded that it was honestly surprising that he was as vehement in his protest of Sean’s comedy would have none of Sean’s reaching out, responding, “I don’t hear any laughs. I’ve been listening and I don’t hear any laughs. I’m not the one trying to be a comedian over here. I just want to know when you’re going to do something funny.”
Through the boos and barbs thrown the second heckler’s way, Sean still try to probe as to why this man took a personal offense to Sean merely setting up material, “What’s the problem, man?”
The second heckler finally responding by demanding, “Why don’t you do something funny?”
In a move of chivalry, Sean obliged with a worked out joke about Obama that got a big room laugh at the punchline, but was met with a sarcastic gasp of a laugh by the second heckler in the middle of the joke.
Sean snapped, “Hey, see that? They’re laughing. They’re all laughing. You can’t say anything about that. Hey, we get it. You’ve been stuck being a grip for most of your life and things aren’t working out. Well, join the club!”
Uproarious applause and cheers flooded the whole room between every sentence that Sean yelled at the second heckler, “I don’t give a fuck about you. I’m a man. I have a podcast that gets over 8,000 downloads a month. We can take this outside. I don’t give a fuck. I was born and raised in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where we made steel that killed the Nazis (Sean proudly pumped his chest at this appropriate opportunity). This is a man unraveling right before your eyes. I don’t give a fuck. You want to take this outside?"
Lauding Sean as a hero just fresh off a duel as he got off stage, Sean went straight to the second heckler still offering to "take it outside” at which point they both had to be separated by respective parties. Still within the premises, the second heckler was then given the same treatment as the first heckler by the crowd and was kicked out.
The bizarre events that just filled the last 20 minutes I just described might encourage some people to think negatively of the evening, despite everything before the two hecklers being pretty funny. March 7th at Public House still had more in store for the crowd at hand.
Taking advantage of the moment and the situation present, comedian Davey Johnson of the Doorknockers duo improvised a sketch with host JC Coccoli’s permission in which he played a drunker brother of the first heckler that fell all over the stage, incidentally breaking the mic for a few minutes. Comedian Kyle Kinane, fresh off the road and the premiere of his Comedy Central Special, hid amidst the crowd at the table where the second heckler was standing, taking the cue to stall for time while JC fixed the mix, started yelling at Davey as the brother of the second heckler, “You’re brother’s funnier. Bring him back.”
You almost couldn’t understand what either of them were saying as there was so much laughter. With Kyle egging him on, Davey took off his shirt and went off just like Sean, “You wanna take this outside?”, when JC had just fixed the mic and promptly ended the sketch as Davey, by this time, had his pants off. Taking the cue from his “brother”, the first heckler, he started dry humping JC, which made nearly the entire audience doubled over in laughter.
Comedian Davey Johnson goes a little further than off the cuff with ’Keep It Clean’ host JC Coccoli [pic taken by Scott Boxenbaum]
Davey left the stage and Kyle resumed his position as an intently listening audience member while JC took her time in settling the show down as best she could claiming, “I don’t know how we can top this,” before she brought up the next comic, in town from Canada, Simon King. Simon did his best to stick to his guns and got some good laughs throughout his set, especially when a cleaning lady walked right behind him during his set to clean a corner, but everyone at Public House got caught up in verbally processing the events that just occurred.
With the post-fight excitement still very much palpable in the loud whispers throughout the room, JC actually restarted the show with the same routine she always does at the top of Keep It Clean Comedy with greeting the audience then taking the wireless microphone to see who else is talking while she breaks the crowd in for a show. From this point on, the night resumed relatively according to plan with Lauren Ashley Bishop, Shawn Pearlman, Julia Lillis, and Josh Adam Meyers, pretty much doing their act (save for Chris Gordon who opened up some party poppers) and faring well. We were well into 3 hour territory when JC finally ended the show, but, for me, it was glaring exception in regards to duration of live comedy shows.
In short, the night was won and the answer to the question posed at the beginning, “Should I go to Public House yet?” should always be a resounding yes.
Something that can never be and will never be replicated had taken place at Public House. Even as I’ve taken on the task on trying to provide a reliable picture as to what happened, there is so many tiny quips and nuances that I’m surely missed, but would ultimately be out of context like how amazing it was that a single audience member, Michael Stuart, sat front and center for the entire show, hecklers, poppers, random improv sketches, and all.
No matter how fantastical and incredible I made any of this sound, I guarantee you it was exponentially better in person. This is why you go see live comedy instead of seeing someone vastly edited and filtered set on TV even if gas is $4 a gallon because you just might get to be a part of a night like the Battle of 1739 (Public House).
Three Minutes to Nothing
“The idea that art has to have a “best of” category destroys the entire concept.”
–Kyle Kinane
Stand up comedy, though it may appear as a toy marketed towards 18-49 year old males, is an art form. Though referencing the most recent Academy Awards Ceremony, brilliant comedian Kyle Kinane points out above that art cannot and should not be compartmentalized into a contest.
Art relies on subjectivity and perspective and as such, there is no 100% universal answer as to what is funny or even more specifically who is the Funniest Person that Bothered to Come to Long Beach on a Random Wednesday Night. Thus, comedy contests, on principle, do not really decide who is legitimately the funniest comedian. On any given night, pros can get heckled into a verbal clash of barbs and insults and open mic’ers can kill because every room is different every night with an ever changing audience. Part of the art form of stand up comedy comes into play in this respect as the artist in the stand up comedian can and will not be funny to everyone. There are plenty of people that don’t get Richard Pryor, think Bill Hicks is just a sad angry lonely man, and think Larry the Cable Guy is just the funniest damn thing that they ever done saw. With the vast range of taste especially when it comes to what makes people laugh, most comedy contests deciding who is the funniest is inherently faulty.
This is only the first problem.
If there was a random audience that didn’t come for any specific comedian, a contest might start to be a somewhat fair gauge, but that is an unfortunate possibility in the way comedy shows are produced and promoted. All comedy contests are put together mostly as a money making venture and along those lines are set-up to award those that bring the most people to the show without too much regard of how funny they really are.
Now, before I continue, this isn’t an espousal of “sour grapes” at losing at every comedy competition that I’ve entered, but this is rather a breakdown of why a swarm of comedians try to do their punchiest 3-7 minutes amidst a two hour show is an utter waste of time.
In mid November of 2010, I was in a comedy contest where I was competing for $75 and a spot at the Main Room of the Comedy Store by performing the best 3 minutes I could put together. About a week before the show, I was notified that one of the stars of the reality show “Pit Boss” was partaking in the competition and subsequently was going to be filmed so her participation could be cut into an episode. Because she was being filmed for the reality show, she brought her friends, family, crew members, producers, and so on and so forth. Basically, SHE BROUGHT MORE HALF THAN THE ROOM. At this point, the competition is absolutely rigged as there is no way that anyone else could possibly “be funnier” than the person that more than half the audience came for. On top of that, this reality star is a “little person”. That’s right, the show “Pit Boss” is about “little people” standing well below 5 feet tall who rescue pit bulls. If there is a way to get more sympathy on your side as a performer, I’d like to know because it doesn’t exist.
Admittedly, I had a so-so set, especially being more of a long form comedian that is trying to jam punchy jokes into 3 minutes, but in sitting and listening to her set, it was very apparent that she had gone on stage perhaps only a few times before this occasion as she seemed over-rehearsed to the point of sounding like she was reciting jokes. Still, that didn’t matter that she just had material about being incredibly short and a stoner that I’ll politely call “very green” because all of her friends, family, crew, etc. gave her applause breaks on nearly every joke like it was a special drop-in appearance by Louis CK. At the end of it, it was no surprise that the $75 and the spot at the Comedy Store went to the “Pit Boss” star. She technically did have the “best set” of the night, but try bringing all of your friends, family, and crew out every time you perform and have them clap for all of the same jokes told the same way. I’ll save you the pondering as this will never happen and you will, as a true comedian, have to perform in front of strangers and how raw you are a performer will truly show through. (Note: 2nd and 3rd place also had brought several audience members, but had much more uneven sets).
Though I don’t believe I should have won the contest, there were other performers who, like myself, go night in and night out working on their act wherever they’re allowed to tell jokes and have become quite capable in performing stand up comedy in several different situations. As that is what a majority of their time is spent on, very little time can be dedicated to promoting a contest where you have to wrangle your friends to watch you only do 3 minutes. Given the circumstances, them being a group of people that has collectively decided, “I’m only going to laugh for my friend and no one else is even remotely as funny as them.”, a few of the true comics I knew had a decent set. Still, like myself, they could have used that $75 to get gas to get home as we’re constantly driving all of the time or perhaps eat as several comics in LA are close to broke and/or starving.
We, the comics (referring to people that actually go up several times a week) didn’t bring anybody and consequently we didn’t have a chance of winning or even placing. A cast member of a reality TV show does not need $75 or a spot at the Comedy Store. Absolutely, there are ways that they could get both with just the TV credit alone and not have to perform in a contest unconsciously rigging the whole thing much to the disappointment and frustration of everyone else on the line-up.
As this is the trend of most comedy competitions, especially here in LA, in addition to being conceptually faulty in deciding who is the funniest, I submit to comedians that your time is better spent going to an open mic to work on your act and becoming a better comedian rather than trying to perform for your friends and gain the distinction of “funniest person for a few months in some contest that most people have no idea exists” because that will only take you as far as being really funny for your friends.
Recently: A significant portion of Muslims claimed that the logo for the upcoming London 2012 Olympics is racist. If you take a look at and analyze the actual logo, there’s nothing really racist about it. If you need a refresher course, take notes from Kyle Kinane and how he imagines Trader Joe of Trader Joe’s promotes his “ethnic” alter egos.

9) When you ask to be brought up on stage by having the host say, “Our next comic comes all the way from the city of ASSHOLE!” I begin to wonder wy you ever left.

Glad That “This Is Not Happening” Is Indeed Happening
There has always been a “universal” quality about storytelling, especially the kind that is live, done in person. Any story has the potential to be captivating through unflinching honesty and keen craftsmanship even if its told behind a high school cafeteria.
The stand-up/storytelling series “This Is Not Happening” magnifies how amazingly hilarious stories can be when already tried-and-true comedians shed the veil of their act and spin quite the yarn in front of a packed house at the Hollywood Improv Main Room.
Whether it be Eddie Pepitone yelling about working for a legally blind man, Kyle Kinane working for a charming racist, or even Tig Notaro calling herself out on an intentionally drawn-out, bland story, each one of the comedians, who are already hilarious just telling jokes (i.e. former Simpsons writer Dana Gould), maintained a sense of being around a campfire telling stories as if we were all friends except there was around 200 of us, which made every twist and turn even bigger and subsequently more gratifying.
Many comics fear delving into storytelling as the long bouts of silence that can potentially come with doing so, but I would argue that many of those tense expectations that the audience has for someone to be funny and the performer has for the audience to laugh melt away as they’re just purely honest. Kevin Christy, with his hysterical story of how faithful he is to his wife, did this by being wonderfully unapologetic for how much of a “straight edge” he is and, as a result, left the audience laughing heartily between every turn.
Hosted efficiently and very enjoyably by Ari Shaffir and finely produced by Eric Abrams, This Is Not Happening takes the model of a storytelling show and betters it with a very sizable crowd and a theme, tying every comedian’s stories nice and neat into a package manifested in the image, on this particular show, (on the flyer above designed by aforementioned comic Kevin Christy) of a pile of feces in a hard hat. The delightful theme to inspire such an image was: Take This Job and Shove It. Feces in a hard hat is sort of revolting as an idea, but one that really is universal to the human experience, at least since construction jobs were developed, and hilarious in story form with dozens of people listening, making This Is Not Happening something that I’m quite glad “actually happens” and I have the privilege to see.
This is Not Happening frequently takes places at the Hollywood Improv. Check back at the Comedy Bureau for details on the next one.

1) There have been actual reports of comedian Dave Chappelle sightings at both the Laugh Factory and the Comedy Store performing comedy and hanging around. More details to come as the Comedy Bureau receives them.
2) Not only is Heart of Darkness with Greg Barris having another Los Angeles run, but it’s going to have none other than Reggie Watts in its line-up (not to mention Chelsea Peretti and Sean Patton). 4) Garfunkel and Oates “All Over Your Face” comes out tomorrow on iTunes and cdbaby. I don’t know about you, but this will be replacing the Tron soundtrack in my car and though that statement is out of context, that’s pretty damn significant (I’ve listened to Derezzed over 250 times).

Why Can’t Everyday Be ‘Sunday Sunday Sunday’?
On a cold wintry LA Sunday evening, one would be right in thinking that must denizens of their vast city would revert to shutting themselves in, especially since, as far as stand up comedy goes, Louis CK’s “Hilarious” was debuting on Comedy Central and Fox’s newest cartoon show, “Bob’s Burgers”, with a few hilarious comedians as well, was also premiering. Yet, the reputation of the Sunday Sunday Sunday Show at the Improv Space in Westwood held up and boasted a packed crowd where extra lawn chairs were almost not enough to seat the capacity crowd.
Going on their 4th year running an independently run and produced stand up comedy show, Karl Hess (pictured above), Asterios Kokkinos, and Gian Molina have branded themselves amongst a neighborhood full of options of nighttime entertainment in the very hip and youthful Westwood as a place for a grand old time full of laughs the whole way through. It only took 20 minutes for the entire Improv Space to fill up with a crowd of 40+ of both students and residents of Westwood where the theatre is located.
That feat isn’t entirely surprising when one considers that every line-up at Sunday Sunday Sunday rivals any show at any major comedy club. This past Sunday, Kyle Kinane, Kumail Nanjiani, Eli Braden, Greg Barris, who are all comics that tour around the U.S. and who have been on TV, graced the Improv Space stage and showcased some of the best in what some might consider “alternative comedy”, but what is really just some of the most hilarious material from some of the most original performers on the comedy scene. Spirited host Karl Hess (along with his mastery of “kicking the mic stand”) Asterios Kokkinos, and Gian Molina definitely do their part, not only in producing a great setting to attract great comics, but also in maintaining an energetic vibe on their stage through such things as opening the show on the them to the “A-Team”. In this respect, this show rightfully aspires to be a part of the ground floor of the next generation in comedy.
Somewhat distanced from Hollywood, Sunday Sunday Sunday offers up to all the comedy lovers of LA yet another place on Sunday, as there are several great bar/lounge comedy shows that have gained notoriety, where you can go see a laugh for completely FREE, meaning no cover or minimum, (check Wisepix for more such listings) with some of the best comics working today. In other words, we should replace two days of the week (perhaps Mon. and Wed.) and make them into SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY. The Sunday Sunday Sunday Show is on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month, 9:30PM at the Improv Space 951 W. Gayley in Westwood and is completely free of charge.

LA’s First “Fifty First Jokes”
Some people might think nearly fifty comedians telling one joke each one right after the other is more of a horrid open mic gone even worst than an actual show, much less a laugh riot. Yet, LA’s “Fifty First Jokes” never got close to being a “thunderdome of comedy”.
Instead, “Fifty First Jokes” was an amazing and constantly hilarious rollercoaster showcase of many of LA’s best and brightest amidst its vast comedy scene coming up with the comedian’s version of a new year resolution: a brand new joke. In fact, nearly any joke that any comedian tells can be seen as a resolution of sorts, which is why the entire to-capacity crowd at the Zephyr Theatre was on board laughing hysterically for the whole show through the jokes that killed to the “groaners” (that were still greeted with laughter) to even Maria Bamford mumbling on the floor in the character of an “angry comic”.
Started in NYC five years ago, producers/comics Margie Kment
and Rob O’Reilly (pictured at top) got permission to bring this format of a multitude of comics performing new material for approximately 90 seconds to LA and assembled a gorgeous stretch limo of a line-up that includes hilarious people from all different ilks such as BJ Novak of The Office
and Paul Scheer of Human Giant
all the way to one, Robert Buscemi,
a Chicago transplant that thankfully makes his comedy home here in LA, bringing his ingeniously absurd wit with him. Other such amazing performers that shouldn’t be missed wherever and whenever they’re performing that went up included: Rory Scovel (killed without doing a joke),
Kyle Kinane (had his back to the audience for the first 30 seconds),
Matt Knudsen (made up a hilarious joke with audience participation),
and Matt Braunger.
NY comedian Greg Barris,
who had just arrived in LA after doing the NY “Fifty First Jokes”, even popped in and helped bring the inaugural LA version to that rare point where everyone, both comics and real audience members combined, simply had a great time for the entire show.
Unfortunately, such a comedy production of this sort can only take place once a year, but waiting just under 365 days is definitely worth hearing “Fifty First Jokes”.

1) It’s simply not enough to say that Frolic @ Far Bar is just a great show with a fantastic line-up of comics (which it is). With live comedy, running over 90 minutes, in my opinion, one enters extremely tricky territory as the audience tires, settles their check, and checks any pertinent e-mail/texts. Yet producer/comic Josh Rencher
put together such a tightly-run show with a plethora of great comics (who are so funny that it doesn’t matter that they have “credits” even though they all do) comprising what could be four different amazing shows on their own that I was able to sit and watch and laugh with the packed room throughout for the entire duration (approximately 2 hours). As host (and as cliché as this sounds, it’s true) with the most Asterios Kokkinos said, “There’s no fat on this show.” Within one of the parts of LA that actually looks like a city and has the type of nightlife where people actually WALK around, Little Tokyo, the hip, though very retro Far Bar offered Rencher’s Frolic! that very intimate setting that live comedy demands to work. Thus I simply enjoyed a night of some of my absolute favorites comics in LA that are regularly featured here at the Comedy Bureau and more: Host Asterios Kokkinos,
and Eddie Pepitone.
None of those people should be missed wherever they’re performing, but certainly not at the Frolic show. Unfortunately, Frolic will be on hiatus until a date and location to be yet determined, but check back at the Comedy Bureau for details on the next one.
