Recently: A significant portion of Muslims claimed that the logo for the upcoming London 2012 Olympics is racist.  If you take a look at and analyze the actual logo, there’s nothing really racist about it.  If you need a refresher course, take notes from Kyle Kinane and how he imagines Trader Joe of Trader Joe’s promotes his “ethnic” alter egos.

1) THIS IS THE LAST DAY TO SUBMIT FOR BRIDGETOWN COMEDY FESTIVAL!!!!  Details here.

2) Love’em or hate’em, the Oscars took place last night and several of us watched it, and plenty tweeted about it.  Handpicked, hometown (LA/Hollywood) favorites were retweeted last night and are now featured here:

“@shanenickerson "Who are you wearing?” ‘Some guy named Ken I murdered.’-serial killer up for an Academy Award, being interviewed by Tim Gunn. #oscars"-Shane Nickerson

“@paulcibis If the hosts are operating at the level of a high school talent show, why not end with a grade school choir recital? #Oscars”

3) March 12th will probably be the first time in over a decade that I might actually watch SNL in a decade.  Zach Galifianakis is hosting.  How about that?  Someone that has been paid to be funny on a consistent basis to host a program that’s supposed to be funny… what a novel concept… It just might work.  Mar. 12th.

Into the “Heart of Darkness” of an Old Fashioned Good Time

The name “Heart of Darkness” promoted as a live comedy show might make many people a little queasy, thinking perhaps, that if they attend, they will be made uncomfortable on what is performance art attempting to be Andy Kaufman.  Though there is a higher brow in the brand of comedy that producer/host/comedian/ringleader Greg Barris wrangles for his show, one will never find themselves laughing only because they’re uncomfortably lost in the “Heart of Darkness”.

Taking place at unusual and unique venues that are a far cry from the traditional comedy club around the country, Greg Barris purposely makes his show more of an organic experience (he touches and forgives audience members) rather than another one of the stand up showcase shows that has spread like a virus across the face of Los Angeles.  In fact, at both the Burbank Moose Lodge or in the back room of Meltdown Comics for the recent two-show stint in LA, audience members got more the sense that they were hanging out after school and some really amazingly talented and hilarious friends rather than the $8 you paid to sit in a crowded room and see a “planned-enough performance”.  With a small line-up, all the performers got to play loose and at their pace, keeping the easy-going, laid-back vibe present throughout the duration of “Heart of Darkness”.

The Comedy Bureau was fortunate enough to be in attendance at the Meltdown Comics edition that had a stellar line-up of comics including the incomparable Reggie Watts (as only briefly caught on tape here) floating between a multitude of accents, jokes, and songs, the painfully, but hysterically honest stories of Sean Patton, and the anxiously funny Chelsea Peretti as well as the head of the whole operation Greg Barris and his right hand man in the form of band Dima and Doctor Juchins.  The show was sold out and packed to the gills as I gladly stood the whole time.

For anybody that has groaned when they have heard the joke set-up, “So I’m half…,” wondered if that was all that stand up comedy has become and why you’re possibly not having a good time, perhaps you should catch Greg Barris’ Heart of Darkness next time it’s in town to restore your faith in that there is indeed an alternative to stand up comedy that’s been stuck in the hey-day 80’s and it’s pretty damn funny.

1) The “insider comedian interview” format has gone viral… big time.  Forget about shoddy camera work in green rooms and back alley studios that double as living spaces.  Bigger names are coming out of the woodwork.  First Marc Maron w/his “WTF Podcast”.  Recently, Dave Holmes and “A Drink with Dave”.  Most recently, Bill Maher and “12 Mile”.  Did I mention that everyone should be watching/listening to these?

2) Everyone will be live tweeting during the Oscars and I will be here in our cavernous office keeping everyone up to speed as to what’s the funniest things written during the show.  We hand pick our featured tweets here and I almost suggest that you don’t need to watch the Oscars because the Comedy Bureau Twitter feed will be almost more entertaining (only because you need to watch the telecast to put it into context).

3) In case you were wondering, the Tip of the Hat, this week, goes to Eddie Pepitone for the start of the Puddin’ Comic Strip.  Article to follow later today.

The Most Important Snub(s) of All in the Comedy Awards

February 15, 2011
Uncategorized
comedy, comedy central, first annual comedy awards, la, mtv

The First Annual Comedy Awards.

First off, this should be called the First Annual Comedy Awards in Film and Television, just to be perfectly accurate as to what they are and aren’t giving recognition too.  Second, forget about the significance of snubbing 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, and Community.  There are much bigger snubs at hand and I’ve bolded them for you to cut to the chase.

COMEDY SERIES
COMEDY ACTOR — TV
COMEDY ACTRESS — TV
COMEDY ACTOR — FILM
COMEDY ACTRESS — FILM
LATE NIGHT COMEDY SERIES
SKETCH COMEDY/ALTERNATIVE COMEDY SERIES
STAND-UP SPECIAL
COMEDY FILM
ANIMATED COMEDY FILM
ANIMATED COMEDY SERIES
COMEDY WRITING — TV
COMEDY SCREENPLAY
COMEDY DIRECTING — TV
COMEDY DIRECTOR — FILM

Again, this is being billed as the “First Annual Comedy Awards”, which would denote recognition towards the art of comedy in seemingly all of its various manifestations.  Instead, there is only one “nod” towards stand-up, which, whether you like it or not, is still a major component of comedy today.

Even within that nomination, Comedy Central and MTV, limited its scope to a “stand-up special”, which means it had to be aired on TV in order to be considered for an award.  This is an unnecessarily exclusionary policy as only stand up comedy that is formatted for TV as opposed to a stand up comedy album, which is usually unfiltered, uncensored, and better as it has no exact time constraints.

Not only is there a kind of an afterthought of a category for stand up at the First Annual Comedy Awards, there’s also nothing recognizing comedy podcasts that either deal with the art of Comedy or just plain funny.  What about funny people that Tweet? What about the funniest book?  Funniest viral video?

Also, just like the Oscars, there is a separate category for those in the realm of animation.  This is yet another unfairly exclusive move on the Comedy Awards and even furthered by having another category for Sketch Comedy/Alternative Series. If you ever want to devalue someone’s award, have a “/” in their category.  In considering the BEST in comedy in regards to a series, there should be no dissociation between live action or animation because, in the end, both awards cheapen the other.  Just have a Best Comedy Series and whether it be animated, live action, on TV, or on the web, may the best production win and it would have so much more weight and prestige as an award (is that the goal of awards ceremonies anymore?)

The thinking process, unfortunately, is that no one would watch a telecast with sub-genre categories that I just mentioned and there would be numbers to back that argument up.  In fact, I would say that most of America wouldn’t care about who is the funniest person on Twitter, etc.  Then again, I firmly believe with not just the First Annual Comedy Awards, but also with the Grammys, Oscars, Emmys, and other televised awards show is that none of them should be aired ever.

It’s a specific industry recognizing its peers and we have no real business in dictating or judging how any of that should be carried out.  If any of these awards shows weren’t aired, (yes, I understand that’s advertising dollars down the drain, but just go with this argument for a bit longer) there would be significantly less pressure to pander to an audience who have no foundation from which to be a judge of any of these categories.  The People’s Choice Awards already exists, so any other awards ceremony like the Comedy Awards should be along on the lines of honoring the best in the art of comedy for those involved in comedy because they would know better than anyone else.

A corollary to an earlier point I made in this article: The First Annual Comedy Awards should actually be called The First Annual Comedy in Film and TV Awards Made Palatable and Relatable for “That” Key Demographic.

10) Should there be a catchphrase or a jingle that is embedded right here? Any thoughts? Would that get more people reading the Comedy Bureau?  If you’ve read this far, please let me know at thecomedybureau@gmail.com

altadena, amuse and abuse, back home in laihaina, bar lubitsch, big trouble in little tokyo, Chatroulette live, coffee gallery, comedy, comedy bureau, comedy central, comedy crawl, comedy death ray, downtown, downtown independent, harlem place cafe, holy fuck, jokes.com, la, marty's, open mic run, palms, pasadena, patton oswalt, Señor Fish, speakeasy open mic, stand up showdown, ucb, west hollywood, westwood brewco, zombie spaceship wasteland

1) Within the realm of the open mics, I’ve found the “mixed mic” to be the best type to actually try out material. Speakeasy Open Mic @ Harlem Place Cafe on Mondays is a perfect example of that as their “mixed mic” brings all sorts of poets, musicians, and comedians such as myself all to one place to share.  Instead of falling victim to being a horrid doldrum to be “subjected to’, as many open mics have come to be, the "mixed mic” in general has enough variety in forms of artistic expression that the audience’s attention doesn’t tire out.  At Harlem Place Cafe, there were over 40 people comprised of several spoken word poets (some were actually pretty good, a rare thing at open mics), musicians, and the one comedian for the evening, myself.  Though transitioning from heavy-handed intended-to-be-life-affirming spoken word poetry to comedy can be quite tricky, people, for the most part, were willing listeners and as a result I had a pretty good set and more importantly, fun, as opposed to the typical obsessing over the response of group of self-centered comics on a weekday night.  Thus, Speakeasy Open Mic is another “Bureau Approved” open mic.  Speakeasy Open Mic takes place every Mon. at 8PM at the Harlem Place Cafe 124 W. 4th St. in Downtown Los Angeles (in alley between Spring and Main St.).  To guarantee a spot (it does get pretty crowded), sign up in advance via e-mail at speakeasyopenmic@gmail.com.

2) What a COMEDY CRAWL for tonight that you shouldn’t miss with some of the best shows in time at what is for me affordable (FREE) and for others a ridiculously great deal: Comedy Death Ray @ UCB Theatre 8:30PM $5 (stand by only), Holy Fuck @ Downtown Independent Theater 9PM FREE, Chatroulette LIVE! @ UCB Theatre 11PM $5, Dog & Pony Show @ Bar Lubitsch 8PM FREE, Amuse and Abuse @ Esquire Bar & Lounge 1 Year Anniversary 8:30PM FREE.

3) OPEN MIC RUN: PALMS 8572 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, CA/Sign-up 4:30PM/Starts 5PM, BACK HOME IN LAHAINA (call 310 835 4014 before going) 519 E. Carson St., Carson, CA #A/Sign-up 6PM/Starts 7PM/must work clean, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE TOKYO @ SEÑOR FISH 422 E. 1st St., Los Angeles, CA (little tokyo, near downtown)/Sign-up 6:30PM/Starts 7PM, WESTWOOD BREWCO 1097 Glendon Ave., Westwood, CA/Sign-up lottery 7:30PM/Starts 8PM, COFFEE GALLERY 2029 Lake Ave., Altadena, CA/Starts 8PM/mixed mic, MARTY’S/THE OPEN MIC 7351 W. Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, CA (walk up Martel past Big Mama’s and Papa’s)/5PM to 11PM/$5/multiple sets allowed.

4) Comedy Central is now having their annual “Stand Up Showdown” for 2011, which puts the power of what Comedy Central Presents Special are the best, and, hopefully, which ones will be aired more frequently.  You can vote here.  I’m going to watch clips from every comedian and give you my recommendations tomorrow, but, in the meantime, don’t waste your vote impulsively.  Pick someone who featured on the Comedy Bureau frequently.

5) Patton Oswalt takes a foray into the literary by making “Zombie Spaceship Wasteland” available for purchase today.  Judd Apatow claims, “Further proof that Patton Oswalt is way funnier than I am, which is either high praise or an insult. Your call.” and award winning writer Dave Eggers says, “Fans of Patton Oswalt’s standup comedy have always known he was a born writer at heart, and now here’s the proof. This is a surprisingly affecting, sincere and daresay vulnerable collection of essays, all keenly observed, always very funny.”  Maybe, at the very least, you should go to Barnes & Noble and sit for a few hours and check it out, like I plan to do.

6) The Comedy Bureau “Tips Its Hat” today to WENDY LIEBMAN "@WendyLiebman I want to watch OWN but a) I can’t find it and b) I’m too busy texting in my car.“  Over 20 years in comedy, Wendy has built up nearly hit all the milestones that many of us in the "aspiring” category dream to achieve: touring constantly, having a special on HBO, actually making money at comedy, etc.  Being one of the quickest, wittiest, and most clever comics I’ve ever heard is what has gotten her well-deserved success.  Website, Twitter, and check back at the Comedy Bureau for any of Wendy’s upcoming LA tour dates.

7) From the You Should Have Been There Lagoon: (to show you what I’m talkin’ bout) Wendy Liebman Pt. 1 & Pt. 2

8) Donate to the Comedy Bureau. Thanks to Jerry Brandt for being a continued supporter of the Comedy Bureau.  Join him in being a good, decent person.

9) Can’t wait for all the people who have a New Year’s Resolution of trying their hand stand up comedy.  I JUST CAN’T WAIT.
