1) MTV’s scripted horror-comedy series Death Valley premieres tonight and definitely shows some promise and a welcome spin on the “emo-monster genre” that has dominated entertainment over the last 5 years. Let’s give it a chance and watch (10:30PM MTV).

2) Our favorites from Channel 101 that will be moving on to next month:
Intimate Indiscretions

Sex Teenagers

Parent Project

We’re also sad that Everything had to come to an end.

3) Our good friends over at RE:COM Magazine have come out with their latest issue, which we have indeed posted about, but needs to be heard about more in any way possible.  It’s really that great and insightful and full of articles about the cutting edge of comedy and yes, we have a piece in there too. Buy one or download a digital copy.

4) Well, that’s just wonderful.

5) “Women” “Pound It”.

6) The Laughter Against the Machine Tour with W. Kamau Bell, Janine Brito, and Nato Green only has 11 days left to reach their Kickstarter goal. If you don’t have money to donate, you can always tell others that do.

7) Laughspin posted a list of the 11 of the funniest stories told by comedians today and while it’s a solid list, we feel the likes of Sean Patton, Kumail Nanjiani, Margot Leitman, Pete Holmes, Moshe Kasher, Marc Maron, and Giulia Rozzi were left out. Also, who could forget the Paul F. Tompkins legendary story about meeting the smallest man in the world Michu on his album Impersonal.

1) Last night, I went to the “scene” open mic in Portland at Suki’s and immediately thought, “Man, I wish I started comedy in Portland.”  Ironically enough, as I’m dropping in from LA, the entire Portland comedy scene, which apparently was in attendance, was saying good bye to one of their heroes Richard Bain, who is coming down to LA.  From the greenest-of-the-green-newbies to mainstays and respected figures in Portland comedy, everyone was there in support of Bain.

LA is so huge, just physically, and many comedians are so incredibly busy with their own act, sketch group that has to put a video out weekly, podcast that records whenever it gets a chance, show or two that they have to produce and promote, that the whole comedy scene in LA could never be in full attendance of anything.  Yet, seeing even more camaraderie in comedy than the pockets of it that exist in LA would not only intrinsically make for better comedy, but would further dispel that image that LA’s a soul sucking town.

So, yes, I’m saying that if you’re a comedian in LA, go see a show that you’re not on or go support another comedian without trying to get booked.

2) Congratulations to Nick Kroll on getting the Nick Show Kroll picked up and Peter Atencio being attached to the Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele Project all for Comedy Central.  Also, congrats to Comedy Central for making some solid picks for this season. [via Deadline]

6) I got a chance to catch the Tulsa Skull Swingers composed of hilarious people in their own right: Craig Anton, Ron Lynch, Blaine Capatch, and Amit Itelman at 3 Clubs last night. Simply amazing. Imagine Link Wray retrofitted for a comedy variety show and you’ll start to get an idea… Stay tuned here at the Bureau for details about their next month.

atom.com, bridgetown comedy festival, comedian, comedy central, conan, kyle kinane, pete holmes, profile

The Comedy Bureau “Tips Its Hat” this week to PETE HOLMES.

Forget, only for a moment, about Pete Holmes killing it on Conan or John Oliver’s NY Stand Up Show on Comedy Central.  If you live in Portland or were so lucky to go there last month and got to catch him at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival just slaying audiences left and right like it was just another day at work, again, for a moment, forget all of that.

Comedian Pete Holmes is so funny that he can kill at breakfast.  Now, to some of you, that might not be all that impressive, but a breakfast amongst comedians and myself can be a pretty tough crowd.  Actually, one of the things I hate most is people trying to run bits or improv off each other after a show when I’m just trying to enjoy some late night breakfast.  I don’t need to hear, “What are you Willy Loman over here? Enjoying your last cup before finding you need to buy a new fridge?”

Yet, Holmes has gotten to a point where being funny isn’t a matter of switching it on or off.  The point is: he is just funny all the time.  Whatever the situation, Holmes brings the laughs.  I’ve seen him drop in on late shows where people are tired and want to go home, I’ve seen him follow complete wrecks, and I’ve even seen Pete perform in someone’s living room beneath a broken light and have the audience rolling in laughter.

Combining an uncanny likeability as soon as he takes the stage, incredibly clever writing, and a pure fun delivery, Holmes has more than earned praise from his contemporaries such as Kyle Kinane, in a recent interview with the Comedy Bureau, calling Pete his own “anti-depressant”.  Much of Holmes’ comedic genius is due to discipline in writing.  Every idea, premise, etc. that he has, he writes down, no matter where he is.  If he riffs on stage, you’ll be sure to find Holmes writing down notes right after the show about what worked.

That’s why, and now you can remember all those things I said to forget, Holmes is on TVs and stages across America, writes for the New Yorker and NBC, has a web series on Atom.com, Kid Farm, co-written with Jamie Lee, making people laugh.  Follow him on Twitter @peteholmez and check out his site www.peteholmes.com.  Also, you can catch him this Thursday May 19th at the always stupendous Super Serious Show at Smashbox Studios in Culver City 7PM; tickets here.

Jim Hamilton-Tip of the Hat 4/9/11

The Comedy Bureau “Tips Its Hat” this week to JIM HAMILTON:

@Jim_Hamilton

“I should tell my neighbors that I’m a registered sex offender. I’m not, but at least the parents would tell their kids to avoid me.”

“No, I’m not stalking you. I made this marionette from memory.”

“Drop everything you’re doing and grab a broom. You just made a mess.”

As Twitter continues to rise in prominence in the comedy world, more and more comedians utilize the microblogging giant in developing material and few are so good as Jim Hamilton.

Though he may not have the following of more famous comedians who tweet only sporadically and often don’t tweet jokes or funny non sequiturs, Jim Hamilton applies his comedic prowess deftly in under 140 characters everyday.  Through this process he’s one of the few that have refined a comedic voice online appreciated by many as he was nominated by Punchline Magazine as one of the Best Tweeters of 2010.

Jim mixes dark observations on himself, extremely clever puns, and minutia throughout his feed along with jokes I’ve heard him tell live that echo of Mitch Hedberg, but are completely and uniquely Jim.  I’m sure Hedberg would never write a joke about having bartenders announce, in place of last call, “Jim Hamilton’s here.”

On stage, Jim takes these very precise one-liners and, unlike many one-liner comics that adopt an almost pretentious persona, is just himself.  His noticeable pauses in between jokes and fleeting glances to seemingly random portions of the room are genuine, only adding a rare nuance of vulnerability and, also, the hilarity.

Though having been on Comedy Central’s popular series Premium Blend, Jim has admitted that if it weren’t for Twitter, he might have quit comedy altogether.  Now, Jim has built up such a reputation that when I once told a comic about starting a tweeting competition between comics here in LA, they simply told me, without any hesitation, that Jim would win.

So, follow @Jim_Hamilton and then take the opportunity to catch him at French Toast @ Taix for free tomorrow Sun. Apr. 10th 8:30PM or at The 4 & 20 @ All Star Lanes Mon. Apr. 11th 8PM also for free.  You can also get some “extended” Jim Hamilton on Tumblr here.
