UK’s Cultural Recovery Fund Includes Support for Comedy Venues

July 29, 2020
News
cultural recovery fund, uk comedy

(via Variety)

While the U.S. government is still trying to selfishly hash out a second stimulus package for Americans that have to remain in lockdown because of COVID-19, the UK government has already gotten on to dedicating funds to the performing arts, one of the hardest industries by the pandemic.

Overall, the UK’s Cultural Recovery Fund, which will initially oversee the distribution of over $640 million to live performance venues of all kinds, including ones dedicated to comedy. That’s one round of funding out of a total $1.14 billion that has been earmarked for the entire fund.

As it stands now, live comedy in UK has either gone virtual with the likes of Tiff Stevenson doing a version of her weekly stand-up show on IG Live or drive-in shows featuring such big UK acts as Daniel Sloss playing for a packed car park. This recovery package will hopefully float enough venues through lockdown so Stevenson, Sloss, and more can have those venues to play when venues can safely open and operate once again.

The future is still very uncertain with, well, everything, but especially when it comes to events that involve a large number of people gathering indoors (unless you live in Taiwan or New Zealand right now). It’s encouraging to see some sort of relief for the performing arts arrive somewhere.

If you’d like to see similar recovery support for venues Stateside, you can take action with the National Independent Venue Association at saveourstages.com.

Pick of the Day: An Evening with Butt & Friends 8/14

July 29, 2020
News
chris stephens, eddie pepitone, joe mcadam, liza treyger, sketch comedy, tommy mcnamara

If you’re looking for a hard break from reality right now and a nice cruise through the absurd, look no further than the sketch duo Butt (Joe McAdam & Chris Stephens). We feel lucky to have enjoyed some of the most brilliantly daft sketch comedy in person over the last few years and we have no doubt that they’ll cook up something as amazing and unabashedly silly for a live-stream.

Dynasty Typewriter, one of the main venues where they got to pull such shenanigans as introducing a dating app based off of different user-submitted pictures of Yoda and nothing else, is presenting a special virtual Evening with Butt & Friends next month, Fri. Aug. 14th at 7PM PT/10PM ET.

Joining Joe and Chris will be quite the very special handful of guests including Eddie Pepitone, Liza Treyger,  and Tommy McNamara.

For all of this, tickets are only $5-$10, which is a steal if you ask us. Go get tickets for An Evening with Butt & Friends here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 18: Jena Friedman & Dark Comedy Now

adult swim, bridget everett, corporate, emmy nominations, emmys, i may destroy you, i'll be gone in the dark, jena friedman, soft focus

Jena Friedman (Soft Focus), one of the best dark comedians/humorists out there today, is TCB Field Report’s honored guest this week. As the pandemic has taken hold of Jena’s computer, Jena calls in on the phone with TCB’s Jake Kroeger and discusses the unfortunate luck of being right about the pandemic, some optimism about an eventual return of comedy, and some hints at what to look out for from Jena in the future when we have a vaccine. Also, they do some quick takes on being excited about the just announced Primetime Emmy nominations and Bridget Everett’s also just announced new HBO series, Somebody Somewhere.

Follow Jena @jenafriedman on Twitter. Watch Jena’s Soft Focus specials here and her last set on Conan here.

Pleaes Enjoy John Early’s Own Version of Vogue’s 73 Questions

July 28, 2020
News
73 questions, john early, parody, vogue magazine

Vogue Magazine’s 73 Questions has been one of their go-to features when it comes to interviewing celebrities in this digital age. Going into A-listers’ homes and doing 73 lightning round style questions has proven to be quite popular.

Of course, it has been done in parody quite a few times (with that even in on it-see Derek Zoolander). Still, for our money, one of the best 73 Questions is one by the great John Early that he just posted to IG. It’s as irreverent and subversive and absurd as any one of these interviews that we’ve seen and, also, you should note that this was safely made a couple of years ago when there was no COVID-19.

Please, please enjoy it here

Thank you @voguemagazine for stopping by! (But truly thank you to @albertfishhat and @eleanormargaret for making this with me very last minute for a live show in 2018 and of course thank you to sex god @sethbogartofficial)

Here are the Comedy Nominees for 72nd Primetime Emmys

July 28, 2020
News
a black lady sketch show, comedy nominees, emmys, insecure, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, marvelous mrs maisel, nicole byer, nominations, primetime emmys, ramy, robot chicken, schitts creek, snl, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, what we do in the shadows

For the 72nd Primetime Emmys, many of the perennial favorites got their nominations like Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, SNL, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Dave Chappelle Schitt’s Creek, Hannah Gadsby in the categories they perennially occupy.

However, there are a few pleasant surprises (there always a few) in this year’s Emmys nominations including A Black Lady Sketch Show, Ramy, Robot Chicken, What We Do in the Shadows, Nicole Byer as host of Nailed It!, and FX’s Cake. What We Do In The Shadows and Insecure actually very much earned their spots in the Outstanding Comedy Series category as they have probably been the two most beloved current/new comedies during the entire pandemic.

Voting will run through the end of next month and the winners will be announced on Sept. 20th by Jimmy Kimmel. We’re going to guess that will be not the normal Emmys telecast chock full of celebrities dressed to the nines.

Take a gander at all the comedy nominees below. Get a full list of all the nominees for the 72nd Primetime Emmys here via Deadline.

July 28, 2020
News
Devin Delliquanti, joseph opio, kat radley, livestream comedy, nowhere comedy club, Randall Otis, stand up comedy, the daily show

From the get go of lockdown, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah has been on the ball with doing their show remotely and very quickly figuring out how to translate their format to work in such a fashion. Undoubtedly, the writers of The Daily Show have a lot to do with that.

Thus, an entire show featuring stand-up from said Daily Show writers would be worth catching. Lucky for you, they are doing such a show next month as part of a virtual edition of The Daily Show Writers Standup Tour. Via live-stream, the critically acclaimed writing team of Kat Radley, Randall Otis, Devin Delliquanti, and Joseph Opio will be performing an exclusive night of stand-up comedy (presented by Nowhere Comedy Club).

This Daily Show Writers Standup Tour is set for Wed. Aug. 12th at 6PM PT/9PM ET and tickets are only $10. Go get them here before they sell out.

Please Enjoy Christina Catherine Martinez’s “Aesthetical Relations” That Really Pushes the Limits of IG Live

July 27, 2020
News
aesthetical relations, christina catherine martinez, talk show

Leave it to Christina Catherine Martinez, comedian, author, and professional art critic, to take the incredibly limiting medium of Instagram Live and turn into something wild, whimsical, dangerous, funny, and genuinely illuminating (like she tends to do with her comedy when done live in person).

Martinez did the first virtual edition of her normally recurring art comedy talk show Aesthetical Relations (with guests Kat Toledo, Jamie Loftus, and Angella d’Avignon) made something truly special. In fact, we may go so far as to say that it might have one of the best openings (there’s an unmistakable indie/cinematic feel to it) to an IG Live show that we’ve ever seen.

So, without any more delay, please enjoy this first virtual edition of Aesthetical Relations here (pt. 1) and here (pt. 2)

Here’s a Trailer for Romany Malco’s Debut as Writer/Director/Star “Tijuana Jackson: Purpose Over Prison”

July 27, 2020
News
regina hall, romany malco, tijuana jackson, trailer

Romany Malco, who you probably very much enjoyed in many supporting or ensemble roles for several years (Weeds, A Million Little Things), is taking getting top billing into his own hands by putting out his very first feature film that he has written, directed, and starred in, Tijuana Jackson: Purpose Over Prison.

Malco stars as the titular Jackson who is an ex-convict trying to become a self-help guru after his release as told through a documentary crew following his journey. From the trailer, there’s a certain, ironic charm to his aspirations to become a motivational speaker reminiscent of Greg Kinnear’s desperate motivational speaker in Little Miss Sunshine. Also, it looks like Regina Hall might steal several scenes throughout this film.

See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for it start streaming on VOD and play at select drive-ins across the U.S. here.

Pick of the Day: John Cleese “Why There Is No Hope” 8/2

July 27, 2020
News
john cleese, stand up, why is there no hope

Comedy legend John Cleese (Monty Python, Fawlty Towers) had been slated to tour the world with his brand new hour show Why There Is No Hope this year. Unfortunately, like everything around the globe for the last several months and the next several upcoming months, this live tour got cancelled/postponed. He actually had a date slated for the LA area in fall, but the fate of live performance even several weeks from now is still very, very much up in the air.

With all of that in mind, Cleese will not be deterred from bringing his new hour (whose title seems even more prescient given that it was conceived of well before COVID-19 came to the public’s attention). He’ll be doing a live-stream performance of Why There Is No Hope this weekend, on Sun. Aug. 2nd at 12PM PT/3PM ET/8PM BST.

Tickets are $19.99 (considerably cheaper than what you would have been spending to see it live) and you really ought to go get your tickets right now right here.

Please Enjoy the Music Video for Ziwe Fumudoh’s Banger “Universal Healthcare”

July 24, 2020
News
amar ibrahim, mary houlihan, music video, universal healthcare, ziwe, ziwe fumudoh

As more of the world gets acquainted with the brilliance of Ziwe Fumudoh every week with her IG Live interview show, Baited with Ziwe (again, we’ll say that it might be the series going right now regardless of platform), it should stand to reason that you should explore the rest of her work

That includes her musical comedy album, produced by Amar Ibrahim, Generation Ziwe (streaming wherever you get music) features biting satire about such crucial issues like Universal Healthcare. In fact, one of the tracks is indeed called “Universal Healthcare” and Ziwe goes in hard on America’s horribly flawed healthcare system. There’s a delightful, Daria-inspired, accompanying music video, animated by Mary Houlihan, released this week.

Bop your head to the song and music video here (and, in case it wasn’t clear, get into everything that Ziwe does and watch Baited on Thurs. 5PM PT/8PM ET @ziwef on Instagram)

Issa Rae’s ColorCreative Now Is Managing Creators

News

(via Deadline)

If you haven’t been aware, Issa Rae is building quite the entertainment empire and it’s not just for herself. There is her series Insecure, which has finished another captivating fourth season and is gearing up for its fifth, and Rae’s burgeoning movie career (and even a new gig as a NBA spokesperson).

Rae also has her own “audio everywhere” company, Raedio, and her production banner ColorCreative. All of these corners of Rae’s empire are dedicated to highlighting underrepresented voices, specifically focusing on women and minority creators.

She will now being furthering that mission with a division of ColorCreative dedicated to representing said underrepresented voices via management. Talitha Watkins from CAA has been tapped to head up this side of things at ColorCreative.

In the ongoing fight for racial equity, especially when it comes to representation of BIPOC in media and who exactly is in charge of those representations (they’re very often non-BIPOC), this is a big step towards towards actually realizing that goal rather than hinting at as Tinseltown has done for so long (i.e. tokenism with a great majority of their diversity initiatives).

Kyle Kinane’s “Trampoline in a Ditch” Is Another Classic Kinane Album That Comes with Bonus Stories & Animated Shorts

July 23, 2020
News
800 pound gorilla, comedy album, kyle kinane, stand up comedy

Kyle Kinane‘s first comedy album, Death of the Party, came out over 10 years ago and gloriously announced the arrival of Kinane and his grand, painterly style of stand-up that blended observations and stories with both a poetic, salt-of-the-earth grace and a keen eye for the deeply embedded absurdities of life. Every hour since has seen Kinane refine said style while successfully managing to adjust his perspective with his rising success.

This latest album from Kyle, Trampoline in a Ditch, shows that, 11 years later, he is still very much a masterful artisan when it comes to writing and detailing his bits and stories into these ornate, yet unmistakably homespun jokes. Tying the paranormal to white privilege or his subconscious finding a way to subvert the beauty of water fall or even a layered tale of having a DUI are just a small sampling of what is his most sprawling album (probably one of the most sprawling comedy albums in comedy history). In fact, Trampoline in a Ditch runs just over an hour and 40 minutes because, in addition to an hour of stand-up, there are separate stories that haven’t found a home in previous releases from Kyle. Of course, Kinane is one of the best storytellers in comedy and these bonus tracks really make you get your money’s worth for this album.

In addition to all of that, Kinane wanted to bring a new element into the fold for what is effectively a double album. Different bits from Trampoline in a Ditch will be animated in different styles rather than just. seeing more of the Kyle you know and love on stage with a mic and a mic stand. The very first animated bit from CJ Cook is pretty spectacular and follows the opening of the album. Please enjoy it here.

Kyle Kinane: Trampoline in a Ditch comes out Friday, July 24th from 800 Pound Gorilla Records. Please do yourself a favor and pre-save or pre-order it right now.

Team Coco’s HBO Max Comedy Specials Start Streaming Next Month; More to Come Soon

July 23, 2020
News
beth stelling, chris redd, hbo max, ismo, solomon georgio, team coco

Right before lockdown, Conan O’Brien’s Team Coco managed to shoot two hour long comedy specials, destined for HBO Max, from the amazing Beth Stelling and James Veitch. More specials that they had planned to shoot got postponed because of COVID-19 shutting down production right around their shoot dates.

Still, those special are set to start streaming on HBO’s newly minted HBO Max next month in an announcement made yesterday.

Also, hour specials from Chris Redd and Moses Storm that had been previously slated for production, along with shorter specials featuring the likes of comedians that you really ought to know already: Naomi Ekperigin, Solomon Georgio, Tommy Johnagin, and Ismo. The dates for when those will happen and subsequently released are TBA. We’re assuming that the nature of the dates will depend on how protocol on TV production with any sort of live audience might change (as that’s not really happening right now) over the next few months.

In any case, you have two new hour comedy specials that are coming in a few weeks from the HBO and Team Coco side of things rather than at Netflix, which is still pretty much on pace for releasing a comedy special every week.

Please Enjoy the Opening to Corporate Season 3 (Before Tonight’s Premiere)

News
comedy central, corporate, opening, season 3, season premiere

Jake Weisman, Matt Ingebretson, and Pat Bishop‘s Corporate has been one of our favorite comedy series time and again over the last few years. We got a sneak peek of this third and final season and Corporate continues to hold up its torch of being one of the best and darkest workplace comedies on television these days.

Not only is it one of the most cinematic looking comedies on TV, but it’s unrelenting satire of all things that live and breathe corporate culture (even as the show is distributed under the umbrella of a media conglomerate corporation) has been thoroughly satisfying, especially if you’re comedy tastes skew to the dark side.

The final season is set to premiere at 10:30PM tonight on Comedy Central. However, you can sneak a preview by watching the wonderfully maniacal opening here.

On Saturday, September 5th at 7PM PT/10PM ET, Funches will present his latest hour live for all the world to see on a live-stream. Ron is aptly (for the times we’re living in) calling this hour “Awakening” and having the fantastic Blair Socci and Gabe Dinger open up the show..

Bridget Everett Is Getting an HBO Series “Somebody Somewhere” Based on Her Life

July 21, 2020
News
bridgett everett, hbo

The comedy/cabaret force to be reckoned with that is Bridget Everett has been a star in the making for quite some time. Her presence, brashness, the power of her voice have made for unforgettable performances for anyone in attendance.

Hailing from Kansas, Everett has had a long road to become who we know and love today and HBO wants to share that story with the world via their latest series, Somebody Somewhere, created by Hannah Bos & Paul Thureen. The series order was announced today and indeed will be based on Everett finding her tribe smack dab in the middle of Kansas.

Seeing the origin story of Everett’s fearlessness on stage should make for another addition to HBO’s comedy slate worth catching.

For the uninitiated or those who need a reminder, please enjoy some Bridget Everett here.

“Sam Jay: 3 In The Morning” Netflix Special Trailer Is Here

July 21, 2020
News
comedy special, netflix, sam jay, stand up comedy

The descriptors of “unfiltered”, “raw”, and “honest” get thrown around quite a bit in comedy these days. So many comics are described in such a way that it can be hard to not only suss out what that might mean and, more importantly, who is really damn funny while being “unfiltered”, “raw”, and “honest”.

For our money, Sam Jay is truly an embodiment of what is to truly be such and honest and raw and unapologetic comedian and do so deftly and hilariously. You’ll get to see an hour of that with her upcoming special, 3 In The Morning, coming to Netflix next month on Tues. Aug. 4th.

Get a bit of look of what Sam will be serving up with this trailer here

Adult Swim Con Will Be Adult Swim’s First Virtual Convention

July 20, 2020
News
adult swim, rick and morty, robot chicken

Adult Swim has tended to be on the bleeding edge when it comes to presentation. Being an entire network that broadcasts within the late late hours on Cartoon Network is still forward thinking even though they’ve been doing so for several years.

With mass gatherings being strongly, strongly discouraged, Adult Swim won’t be stifled in creating something that brings all their fans together. The network already has an incredibly strong presence online and, with all things considered, is opting to do their very own online convention dubbed “Adult Swim Con”.

Adult Swim wants to get to this ASAP, so they’re putting on their Adult Swim Con this Thursday, July 24th-Saturday, July 25th and featuring a variety within their universe of absurd, out there, and completely silly. This will include all sorts of discussions, live music, etc. from the likes of Robot Chicken, Rick & Morty, and Flying Lotus.

You don’t even have to buy an expensive pass or wait in long lines. All you’ll have to do is tune in at adultswimcon.com.

Here’s the full, brightly colored scheduled for this weekend:

SNL Planning Possible Return to Shooting in Studio This Fall

July 20, 2020
News
Saturday Night Live, snl

(via Variety)

Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon have already returned to some sort of stage to do their respective late night shows, which has Lorne Michaels seemingly antsy to have SNL return to Studio 8H. Also, at this point in time, NYC’s reopening seems to be go somewhat smoothly, compared to many botched reopenings across the country at the very least. What lies ahead has yet to be seen, especially since a COVID-19 vaccine isn’t available yet.

Still, rather than doing the entirely remote produced episodes of Saturday Night Live at the end of their last season, Michaels is aiming to have season 46 get closer to where they were before the pandemic took hold in America. To do this, it’s likely, similar to many TV shows that had a live audience, that no one will be sitting in the crowd to watch it live and the crew will have to be small for effective social distancing and be masked. We wouldn’t be surprised to see if this translates to more pre-taped segments versus live sketches that you’d very likely only hear crew members potentially laughing in the background.

All of these plans are merely in a hypothetical stage and nothing is set in stone and will very likely be affected based on how COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and the progress of a vaccine is coming along. That being said, if they pull off producing episodes live, it’s very likely that they will be a template themselves for other live TV shows/sketch series to attempt something with enough (or hopefully more than enough) safety measures and protocol.

Pick of the Day: Upright U.S. Premiere with Live Chat with Tim Minchin & Milly Alcock, Plus Q&A with Judd Apatow

News
atx festival, judd apatow, milly alcock, tim minchin

If you ever take a look at Tim Minchin‘s career, the depth and breadth of how the Aussie musical comedian has flourished is astounding. Whether it be his intensely satirical and biting songs to his work on such musicals as Matilda to acting, Minchin seemingly does it all (and it’s all worth watching/listening to).

His latest work comes in the form of a TV series that he’s starring in with Milly Alcock called Upright. It follows Minchin and Alcock as an unlikely pair trying to drive a piano across the deserts of Australia. It’s a role that’s perfect for Minchin. Here’s a bit of a teaser.

Upright is having its North American premiere (before it airs on Sundance Now) via the ATX TV Festival. The first two episodes will be premiering on the ATX TV Festival’s YouTube Channel on Tues. July 21st at 5PM PT/8PM ET/7PM CT. Minchin and Milly Alcock will be chatting on social media as those two episodes arrive.

Along with that, Judd Apatow will be in conversation with Minchin afterwards and that full Q&A will be available for everyone later this week, Wed. July 22nd at 8AM PT/11AM ET/10AM CT.

The Satellite LA Will No Longer Be Doing Live Shows and Turn Into a Restaurant

July 17, 2020
News
the satellite

Unless you’re in New Zealand right now, the fate of live performance and entertainment is as unsure as it has ever been. Reopenings across the country have been botched and the whispers of live shows coming back in late July are nothing but a faint dream at this point. As a result, venues that regularly held said live shows have their fate’s hanging in the balance of this pandemic as well.

One such venue in LA, The Satellite LA, has decided, in order to save itself, will no longer have live shows and, instead, transform themselves into a full restaurant. The odds of them reopening sooner under this plan is more likely, but they’ll have to completely renovate the establishment before they’re even ready to open their doors.

For a quarter of a century, The Satellite was an independent home to several beloved dance nights and indie bands as well as indie, boundary pushing comedy. Most Sundays were reserved to comedy from the likes of Neil Hamburger, John Early, Powerviolence/Whitmer Thomas, which were some of the most packed indie shows in LA. One of our last live shows was indeed held at The Satellite. The genre bending bits and comedy at The Satellite will be sorely missed.

Other venues in and around LA and the rest of the country could suffer the same fate if relief isn’t gotten. You can support NIVA, the National Independent Venue Association, and their push to #SaveOurStages and get legislators to pass the RESTART Act to help make sure that such an end is less likely to happen.

To all of the Satellite fans out there, I am sorry to say that we will no longer be doing live shows or dance parties. We would like to thank you for all the support you have shown us over the years. We shut our doors March 12 after the bands started canceling shows due to the corona virus and the Government shutting down the bars and nightclubs just a few days later. It has really hit us hard. We can no longer afford to wait for the day we will be allowed to have shows again. If we do that, we will not have the money to continue and will be forced to close forever. We are currently removing the stage and redesigning the club to be more of a place to get good quality drinks and food. We will be re-opening the kitchen and doing a complete redesign. Due to the lack of funds, this will not happen quickly. We will be opening in the parking lot for food and drinks as soon as we have the kitchen re-opened or the government lets us hire a food truck. We hope you will still support us during these tough times. It personally has been an amazing 25 years of live music and dance parties. I will miss those days but it is time for us to move on. I would hope that you will support groups like NIVA. They are trying to raise support in Congress and the Senate to help out all the Independent clubs in the US so they do not have to change format like we did or just close the doors forever. Go to their site and show your support so we can start going to shows again!
