And Now for a Very Appropriate 2020 Anthem from Lost Moon Radio “F*ck! (Keep Hope Alive)”

October 30, 2020
News
2020 anthem, lost moon radio, musical comedy, song of the year

Getting to co-present Lost Moon Radio‘s first virtual show was a true blessing and break from the lingering, waking nightmare that we’re living in right now. We might have told you already, but we’d like to say it again that Lost Moon Radio’s Doing Fine exceeded its fundraising goal for A Place Called Home and got over $1000 that will go to supporting arts programs for vastly underserved youth.

If you didn’t get a chance to tune in, you missed some of the best sketch comedy we’ve seen through the course of quarantine. You certainly missed on what very well could be an anthem for 2020 by Lost Moon Radio, the aptly titled single, F*ck (Keep Hope Alive). Maybe it’ll even be the “Song of the Winter” considering more chaos is ahead and another rise in COVID-19 cases.

Luckily, you can enjoy/commiserate/scream the chorus in unison with the music video for F*ck (Keep Hope Alive) right here.

Rachel Bloom Set to Write Comedy About Real Life NSYNC Superfan Best Friends

October 30, 2020
News
lance bass, nsync, rachel bloom

(via Variety)

The fantastic Rachel Bloom is definitely making the most of her quarantine. She was routinely doing kind of whatever she wanted at Largo every month or so before the pandemic took hold in the States and we were really looking forward to what that might evolve into. Now, we’re just as jazzed that she has a book that’s coming out next month, I Want To Be Where The Normal People Are, and, as of yesterday, a gig to write a script inspired by NSYNC’s Lance Bass about NSYNC superfans.

It’ll actually be based on two real life best friends following NSYNC on their final world tour. As you hopefully know, Bloom prowess for meshing truthful comedy and music is almost unparalleled (just watch Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and all her sketches/music videos) and she is the perfect person to write this movie that dissects nostalgia of one of pop music’s biggest boy bands.

At this point, there’s no word on cast, but we’d absolutely dig seeing Bloom on the big screen if that’s in the card for this project.

Pick of the Day: Variety Q&A w/Bob’s Burgers Cast & Creators Celebrating 200 Eps.

News

Bob’s Burgers is on the verge of crossing 200 episodes of being one of the most charming, wholesome (but not annoyingly wholesome) families on TV (along with so many great pun-based business names and inspired, tiny songs). On their tenth season, they continue to be a true joy to watch and something pretty calming in these dark, tumultuous times.

Variety is hosting a special, exclusive Q&A with the cast and creators of Bob’s Burgers including Loren Bouchard, Nora Smith, H. Jon Benjamin, John Roberts, Kristen Schaal, Eugene Mirman, Dan Mintz and Larry Murphy to honor crossing the 200th episode mark. Together, they’ll chat about their favorite moments and some insider, behind-the-scenes stories that should be a great joy for all of the Bob’s Burgers loyal.

You’ll be able to join in and watch this live-stream panel discussion at the Variety Streaming Room on Thurs. Nov. 12th at 1PM PT/4PM ET.

Please Enjoy Trailer for One of the Wildest, Trippiest Looking Biopics Ever “The Twentieth Century”

October 29, 2020
News
mackenzie king, matthew rankin, oscilloscope, the twentieth century, trailer

On one level, The Twentieth Century is supposed to be a biopic about Canada’s tenth Prime Minister [William Lyon] Mackenzie King, but, it’s very clear from the trailer, that writer/director Matthew Rankin put forth a much more ambitious vision for recounting the life of a Canadian head of state.

Rankin has made something that’s altogether anachronistic, alternative history, dadaist, and a tinge of that famous Apple Super Bowl commercial from the 80s. It’s kind of breathtaking how far Rankin’s take on King’s life in this morality tale about power, veering very clearly into the realm of the absurd and otherworldly.

Take a gander for yourself of what lies ahead for The Twentieth Century in the trailer here, then look for its release on Fri. Nov. 20th.

Enjoy a Bit of Rachel Bloom Doing a Panel Discussion with Her Childhood Bully

October 29, 2020
News
rachel bloom, vulture festival

Of the many intriguing things going on Vulture Festival right now, one of the most intriguing things they slated for their virtual edition was a one-on-one discussion between the brilliant Rachel Bloom and her childhood bully. Bloom has always been one for being ultra-vulnerable in so many of her sketches, songs, or the multiple seasons of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, even if they’re breaking jovially into song.

So, Bloom got as vulnerable as can be for this live-stream convo with her bully (and now friend) Zach Hillman and it’s a doozy. Just get a taste of it with the start of their chat from Vulture Festival here.

Pick of the Day: A Cartoon Monzoom Hallowoon 10/30

October 29, 2020
News

As Halloween week proceeds and you’re very likely (and should be) staying at home and not going to some secret, big gathering, there’s still great, Halloween themed live-streamed comedy shows for you check out.

One that’s happening this Friday will be a lovely and spooky combination of original cartoons, mischievous bits, and a top notch line-up of comedians from all around the country including Mary Houlihan, Steve DeSiena, Joe Rumrill, Sarah Squirm, Nori Reed, Eudora Peterson, Alex Winfrey, Felipe Di Poi Tomargo, Max Wittert and Joe Castle Baker, Angel Yau, Joe Klein. Toons, Halloween, and comedy together should hopefully be enough to escape from thinking about the much scarier day after Halloween of Nov. 3rd.

Best of all, it’s free to stream via Brooklyn Comedy Collective’s channel on the TVCO’s app. Get more details about A Cartoon Monzoom Hallowoon on 10/30 here.

Tiny Toons To Be Revived as “Tiny Toons Looniversity” with Erin Gibson as Showrunner

October 28, 2020
News
cartoon network, erin gibson, hbo max, looney tunes, tiny toons

(via THR)

While reviving animated IP is a very predictable trend (especially while live action series keep getting tripped by pauses due to COVID-19 outbreaks along with an increase in scheduling and budgetary issues), the prospect of the return of the Tiny Toons, a somewhat niche branch of the Looney Tunes animated universe, with someone like Erin Gibson at the helm is very surprising and enticing to us.

Gibson has not only been the co-host of one of the more beloved podcasts around, Throwing Shade, but has always been an incredibly clever, outspoken, subversive writer, comedian, and performer all the way back to when she used to play Michele Bachman in Funny or Die sketches.

Gibson has placed as showrunner and co-EP with Adventure Time’s Nate Cash for this new edition of Tiny Toons, Tiny Toons: Looniversity wherein the Tiny Toons gang will learn how to become “professional” toons. Both HBO Max and Cartoon Network ordered the series, but as to which will platform will get “dibs” or however it’ll work is TBD.

In any case, we have a feeling, because of who is in charge, that this might be another animated series that is initially geared towards children, but will have plenty to enjoy that’s just for the adults as well. That’ll be important since we are still stuck inside because of the pandemic and will still be for quite some time to come.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 31: James Austin Johnson vs. Trump

October 28, 2020
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
apple tv plus, borat, cuomo, de blasio, james austin johnson, jon stewart, richard pryor, trump impression, what things are what things

You might have come across the magnificent comedy of James Austin Johnson via one of many spectacular, spot-on, yet absurdly bent Trump impressions, but one ought to know that Johnson has been offering up hysterical flights of absurdist comedy fancy for several years (even some of which was captured on our TCB compilation album). Johnson zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger about balancing the forced rest from live comedy due to quarantine, finding his way to being one of the best Trump impressions in all of comedy right now, and maintaining the madcap game show podcast he co-hosts, What Things Are What Things. Also, hot takes on the new Pryor biopic, Cuomo/de Blasio getting sued by small venues, Jon Stewart’s new gig at AppleTV+, and Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm.

Oh, unfortunately, Jake didn’t have hiccups this week because he is recovering quite nicely from his emergency appendectomy.

In the search for a way to safely celebrate and somewhat adequately celebrate Halloween, might we suggest a special virtual adaptation of one of the most renowned cult films of all time, Plan 9 From Outer Space.

The amazing Dana Gould will be at the helm for this special live-stream event presented by, as they’re foregoing an in-person festival when they would normally have it in January, SF Sketchfest. Gould has led live-reads of Plan 9 From Outerspace over the years, but this edition will be special as there will be an original cast member, a real prop flying saucer which was used on set in Ed Wood’s shoot as well as a cast chock full of stars including Maria Bamford, Bobcat Goldthwait, Jean Grae, David Koechner, Tim Meadows, Laraine Newman, Oscar Nunez, Bob Odenkirk, Jonah Ray, Paul F. Tompkins, Janet Varney, Baron Vaughn, Kat Aagesen, plus musical accompaniment by Eban Schletter.

This very special edition of Plan 9 From Outer Space is set for Thurs. Oct. 29th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets are $10 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

Jon Stewart to Finally Return to Hosting His Own Topical Show at Apple TV+

October 27, 2020
News
apple tv plus, jon stewart

Jon Stewart handed over the keys to The Daily Show to Trevor Noah in 2015, which many folks found strange considering that’s when Trump was ramping his presidential campaign around then. Stewart took time away from hosting anything or appearing on anything for that matter. There was the occasional cameo on The Late Show with former Daily Show with Jon Stewart correspondent Stephen Colbert, but Stewart has spent the majority of his time with his family, engaging in advocacy for various causes like benefits for first responders, and trying his hand at directing with Rosewater.

Now, at the potential dusk of Trump’s presidency, Jon Stewart is set to return for a brand new series that he will indeed host and EP over at Apple TV+. It’ll be topical, be one hour, and be more broadly focused rather than making fun of cable news as was the nightly mission during his tenure at The Daily Show. Late night and political/topical comedy has vastly grown and changed since Stewart had the reins to his own show, but it will be undoubtedly one of the highest profile returns to TV in recent memory.

As to whether Jon will keep the beard he has maintained since his exit from Comedy Central, that has yet to be announced.

Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio Sued by Group of NY Theaters and Comedy Clubs for Reopening Protocol

October 27, 2020
News
andrew cuomo, bill de blasio, new york comedy

(via Deadline)

NYC’s reopening continues to be fraught with a bunch of contradictions that gives some breathing room for some businesses and leaves others still hanging like they were at the beginning of the pandemic. Certain indoor activities are currently cleared for operation in New York State and even in NYC in some cases including bowling or trivia at a bar, but small live performance venues are still kept in the dark as to how, when, or why they can’t try and put on shows.

Thus, six off Broadway theaters along with the New York Comedy Club and Broadway Comedy Club are suing New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio for more equitable reopening treatment when it comes to live performance venues that could potentially open safely with limited capacity. For the last few weeks, the world has gotten to see Saturday Night Live return with a live audience (that’s paid to be there as a loophole) and these venue owners and proprietors are left angrily wondering why they’re being left out.

There are outdoor shows that currently happen in NYC without any guidance, which really does beg for answers from both Cuomo and de Blasio as to what is the path back for small venues and intimate live performance, especially live comedy in such a way that a good majority of NYC venues will not have to shudder their doors for good.

As with everything that’s happening in the world right now, we’re unsure as to how the suit will go exactly, but it very well may set a precedent for re-opening for live performance in every other major city around the globe.

Comedy Central Has Already Taped a New Round of “Comedy Central Stand-Up Featuring” Set to Premiere Dec. 1st

News

With stand-up comedy getting its footing with outdoor shows (wherever they can happen), it was inevitable that a network would make a run at trying to film it in order to have some brand new stand-up content.

Comedy Central went ahead and did another round of their popular stand-up digital series Comedy Central Stand-Up Featuring in NYC with a socially distant, masked audience (probably done a little safer than SNL form the looks of it) taped outside. The trailer for this latest batch of exclusive stand-up showcase sets almost resemble something like normal, before-times stand-up, but, of course, the material and the cutaways to the crowd are very much of the moment of the COVID-19 pandemic we’re in right now.

Rosebud Baker, Mary Beth Barone, Brittany Carney, Christi Chiello, Andy Haynes, Josh Johnson, Ismael Loutfi, Gavin Matts, Monroe Martin, Rebecca O’Neal and Eagle Witt all got to take the stage for this very special edition of CC’s digital stand-up series and will very likely have set a precedent of what stand-up comedy will look like for awhile.

Take a look for yourself with the trailer for this round of Comedy Central Stand-Up Featuring here, then look for it to start streaming on Comedy Central’s Stand-Up YouTube channel every week starting Dec. 1st.

It’s inevitable that Sacha Baron Cohen would make the rounds on late night as his renowned character Borat Sagdiyev to promote the recent release of Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm on Amazon Prime, the follow-up to the groundbreaking first Borat moviefilm.

Borat’s latest appearance was on Desus & Mero and the blend of Sacha’s antics as the most famous Kazakh journalist and the irreverence of Desus Nice & The Kid Mero’s riffing make for the rambunctious interview that you’d hope for (which is even harder to achieve when done over Zoom).

So, enjoy Borat and Desus and Mero mixing it up here.

Kenya Barris Will Be Latest to Attempt a Richard Pryor Biopic

October 26, 2020
News
kenya barris, richard pryor

(via IndieWire)

The last attempt at officially making a biopic surrounding the life of comedy legend Richard Pryor was four years ago when Lee Daniels and The Weinstein Company tried to make a go of it. That was such a different time, place, universe, etc., but, of course, that ended up stalled like so many other Pryor biopic projects.

Still, the greatness of Richard Pryor along with the epic life that he lived is ripe for such a feature film treatment. That’s why Kenya Barris along with MGM are going to be the latest to try adapt Pryor’s life for the big screen (well, who knows what sort of screen you’ll be watching this on if and when this movie gets made).

There are no other details at this time, but one can only hope that Barris and MGM can and will pull it off.

This just in: MGM and Kenya Barris are teaming up for a biopic on comedian Richard Pryor. Barris will write, produce, and direct.

Watch Jena Friedman Dissect One of Her Fantastic Conan Sets on “The Set Up”

Team Coco’s exclusive series, The Set Up, that gives a never-before-seen in-depth look into what goes into putting a late night stand-up set has its latest episode featuring one of our all time favorites and a comedian particularly mastered at dark comedy, Jena Friedman.

Friedman and Conan booker J.P. Buck go over a marvelous set Jena had on Conan years back where she specifically focused on the topic of America’s obsession with true crime. Per usual with Jena, she attacked the premise at all angles and planted punchlines at every twist and turn, while continuing to nail the topic the whole time (a rarity in late night sets). Jena details the amount of work, even up to the last second, and risks she took for the set, which hopefully makes you appreciate how effortless it all seems when it was taped on Conan.

Lil’ Rel Made Head of Comedy at kweliTV

October 22, 2020
News
kwelitv, lil' rel

(via Deadline)

Lil’ Rel might be breaking new ground as the Head of Comedy of a new streaming platform. It’s not often that talent gets to take a part of actual programming in terms of curation when it comes to any sort of comedy network/studio/streaming platform, much less be in charge of the whole thing. Sure, Funny or Die had Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart started his very own mutli-platform comedy network Laugh Out Loud, but they’ve either stepped from their executive duties or have delegated such duties as looking for new content/talent to one or several other people.

Yet, that’s what kweliTV, a self-ascribed global destination for indie black cinema, is aiming for. Rel will oversee his very own channel on the streaming platform as well as curating comedic content for the whole kweliTV brand (in collaboration with top brass).

Lil’ Rel will undoubtedly highlight some stuff that we’ve all should have been watching, but he might also be setting a new precedent for streaming services to get an edge over each other in having a certain type of name in charge, in some capacity, of part of their scheduling.

Stand-up comedian @LilRel4 is about to lead the charge when it comes to comedy at kweliTV https://t.co/s7NI8Wn7qZ

Pick of the Day: Lost Moon Radio’s Doing Fine 10/27

October 21, 2020
News
a place called home, live comedy, lost moon radio, musical comedy, sketch comedy
Running for just a tad bit longer than us here at TCB, the musical sketch comedy extravaganza that is Lost Moon Radio has been one of our favorite comedy troupes during our entire tenure as a bureau of comedy. Their highly inventive, innovative way to present finely crafted comedy that’s intellectually satisfying, gutturally funny, and even emotionally resonant really captivated us from the first time that we saw them several years ago down at Cafe Fais Do-Do.
That’s why we’re very proud to be partnering with them to present their very first virtual show, done out of safety due to the COVID-19 pandemic, aptly titled, Lost Moon Radio’s Doing Fine. Per usual there will be Lost Moon Radio‘s splendidly curated batch of bits and songs, but it’ll be done all over YouTube Live. It will be quite the feat considering that they always have quite a sizable cast and always feature a grand, live band at every one of their shows.
On top of all of that, a portion of the profits for the show go to the wonderful local org A Place Called Home. They are dedicated to providing crucial arts and after school programs for the youth of South LA.

Lost Moon Radio’s Doing Fine will stream on YouTube Live on Tues. Oct. 27th at 7PM PT/10PM ET (“Doors” 6:45PM PT/9:45PM ET).

YouTube link will be sent to e-mail after donating ($10-$20 suggested). Get on those tickets right now right here.

Ziwe Scores Her Very Own Variety Series at Showtime

October 21, 2020
News
baited, showtime, variety series, ziwe

At the point, even if you’re trying to actively not look up the name Ziwe after seeing it repeatedly posted all over the place (justifiably so for many, many great reasons), it’s a name that simply can’t ignore. The comedian and writer (and aspiring pop star) found herself in the limelight via IG Live with her weekly interview series, Baited with Ziwe, while also working as a staff writer at Desus & Mero.

That has scored her numerous comedic accolades in quarantine, a book deal, and, as should have happened already by now, a show of her own. Showtime has officially ordered a variety series that will essentially let Ziwe do whatever she wants. As it’ll “feature interviews, sketches and more – including unscripted and unpredictable real-world rendezvous between everyday people,” we can only imagine what Ziwe has hidden in her very stylish ensemble for us all.

Perhaps, a version of Baited that’s a little like Billy on the Street (when we can talk to each other not at a distance on the street because of COVID-19)? Maybe there will be a bit of her rocking out her single Universal Healthcare?

Whatever Ziwe’s show ends up being, you can be assured a good percentage of the world/Internet is looking forward to it more than whatever just got postponed/unrenewed by a network or studio.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 30: Lost Moon Radio & Doing Fine (w/Hiccups)

October 21, 2020
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report

Lost Moon Radio, for our money, has long been a paragon of what a comedy group can be. Part high concept sketch comedy, part live musical comedy, part respected theater company, Lost Moon Radio has been putting on their runs for their one-of-a-kind live shows up in and around LA for over decade and, in this dire time of quarantine, they’re marching forward and doing a very special virtual edition called Lost Moon Radio’s Doing Fine (which we here at TCB happen to be proudly co-presenting) on Tue. Oct. 27th at 7PM PT/10PM ET. LMR’s Dan Oster and Ryan Harrison zoom with TCB’s Jake Kroeger to detail Lost Moon Radio’s journey as a big, happy comedy group dealing with these times of COVID-19 and how they came to doing a virtual show (and how they’ll pull it off). They also give some “hot” takes on the newly minted Best Presidency Ever and Adult Swim’s second virtual festival during lockdown.

Also, Jake had to get an emergency appendectomy over the weekend and thus had some hiccups throughout the episode. You’re welcome.
