For this very special show, they have an absolutely terrific line-up that includes:

Todd Glass

This particular edition of The Bathtub Comedy Shower Hour is set to stream this week on Fri. Mar. 26th at 8PM PT/11PM ET. You can get tickets through donations to the Asian American Advocacy Fund (Donations collected through Venmo: @Cameron-Gavinski, $8 minimum donation for ticket).

Get Your First Full Sneak Peek at Tuca & Bertie Season 2

March 19, 2021
News
adult swim, ali wong, lisa hanawalt, season 2, tiffany haddish, tuca and bertie

For a little while, we were left grieving the news that Tuca & Bertie wouldn’t be picked up for another season at Netflix. Then, Adult Swim gave Lisa Hanawalt and her beautiful, hysterical, otherworldly creation Tuca & Bertie another season, which we absolutely couldn’t wait for. There was an animatic released last year that gave us a bit of hope and excitement for what’s to come for the oddest bird couple.

Now, here‘s a full sneak peek, fully animated and just as charming and wild as you’ve come to expect, of season 2 of Tuca & Bertie.

There’s no specific premiere date (and what use are those anyway as everything changes all the time?), but it looks as though we can expect new episodes to start rolling out this Summer.

Pick of the Day: Border Aid (Humanitarian/Legal Aid Benefit) 3/20

March 19, 2021
News
al otro lado, aparna nancherla, atsuko okatsuka, border aid, chris estrada, christina catherine martinez, opey olagbaju

The issue immigration is yet another pre-pandemic problem (that never really went away) that’s creeping back into the news cycle as things rush to reopen in America. All the organizations that give humanitarian and legal aid to immigrants that are facing separation from their families and deportation due to broken immigration policies are also still alive and well and, coupled with that, are the comedy benefit shows that support said orgs.

This Sat. Mar. 20th at 6:30PM PT/9:30PM ET, Border Aid will be one such fantastic live-stream comedy show that will be raising money for Al Otro Lado and all the crucial work their do for immigrants and the undocumented. The line-up is filled with comedy’s finest to offer their comedy wares in support and solidarity.

That includes: Aparna Nancherla, Chris Estrada, Atsuko Okatsuka, Christina Catherine Martinez, and Opey Olagbaju. Maddie Connors graciously hosts.

Donations are being accepted for Al Otro Lado here, and details and access to the live-stream can be found here. Do some good and enjoy some really, really good comedy this weekend.

Joe Kwaczala Does Another Batch of Hysterical Sketches “21 for ’21” (Raising Money for Mutual Aid)

March 18, 2021
News
21 for 21, east hollywood, joe kwaczala, mutual aid, sketch comedy

A few years ago (or maybe several depending on how you count years in pandemic time), the phenomenal Joe Kwaczala released 31 videos on the same day in honor of just turning 31. You can revel all of those videos’ comedic glory here.

Before that, you might want to delve into the latest gift from Kwaczala, 21 new sketch comedy videos for the year 2021 that are just a wonderfully bizarre and hysterically out-of-left-field as those other 31 videos all those years ago. Also, Joe is raising money for East Hollywood Mutual Aid as nearly all government economic recovery packages have fallen quite short from what Americans need to get through this pandemic.

You can enjoy all 21 for ’21 here and then, if you’re up for it, donate to helping a whole community get what it needs here.

The Kid Mero of Desus & Mero Contracted COVID-19

March 18, 2021
News
desus and mero, kid mero, showtime

Desus & Mero zooming their Showtime series through lockdown has been a blessing. Both Desus Nice and The Kid Mero had been shooting the show remotely, each from their own respective homes in NYC. In the last few weeks, they had been doing more segments that were either in person (their interview Obama) or even in studio (without an audience) with all COVID-19 protocol, but, as far as we knew, both The Bodega Boys were still COVID-19 free.

That very unfortunately changed this week as The Kid Mero tweeted out that he had contracted the infamous virus, insisting that he’s “DOING OK” and observing quarantine protocols. Again, this is another instance where taking so many precautions while shooting a TV show still did not prevent the transmission of COVID-19. There are no details as to where Mero was infected, but the fact remains that there is no 100% safe environment during the pandemic.

We hope that Kid Mero has a speedy recovery and we’d like to thank him for not calling so many of us cowards like Chappelle did for pointing out the risk of doing shows in this time.

MY PALS. POPPING ON HERE TO LET YOU KNOW YOUR BOY GOT COVID.  I’M DOING OK AND FOLLOWING ALL THE PROTOCOLS. BUT DEAD ASS STAY HOME, WEAR YOUR MASK, SOCIAL DISTANCE AND GET YOUR VACCINE IF YOURE ELIGIBLE.  STAY SAFE FAM AND SEE YOU SOON ???❤️

Pick of the Day: Syd Can Cook Anniversary 3/20

March 18, 2021
News
marie faustin, syd can cook, Sydnee Washington

The anniversary of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic is not something that’s really all that much to celebrate or be happy about.

However, the anniversary of Sydnee Washington’s wondrous comedy cooking/panel show, Syd Can Cook, is indeed something to actually excited for. Since the beginning of lockdown, Sydnee has dove into uncharted waters by broadcasting her cooking in her apartment as someone who was not an expert chef and allowed an esteemed panel of the funniest people she knows help/roast her during the whole process.

Normally, the show would stream on IG Live, but this particular edition is getting a nice upgrade by live-streaming from Streamyard. The Syd Can Cook Anniversary is going to be a primetime event (on Sat. Mar. 20th at 4PM PT/7PM ET) with a primetime line-up that includes co-host Marie Faustin and Rachel Sennott, Laci Mosely, Dulce Sloan, Dee Nasty, Devon Walker, Naomi McPherson, and Delina Medhin.

Tickets are $5 and you can (and very much should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Picture This! 9 to 5 Anniversary 4/17

March 17, 2021
News
9 to 5 anniversary, animated comedy, baron vaughn, joel kim booster, kati prescott, live comedy, mike hollingsworth, mike l mayfield, virtual comedy

One of the best shows that we went to in or out of the pandemic was the live animation/live comedy hybrid experience lovingly known as Picture This! For the uninitiated (or those who have spent so much time in quarantine that they’ve forgotten the before times), some of the best animators around would live-animate based on stand-up comedy that was being performed and their animations would be projected on a screen behind the comedian. The results were, with no irony at all, magical (and, of course, hysterical).

There have been a number of virtual versions of the show throughout lockdown, but Picture This! has been on a bit of a break. That all ends next month when they simultaneously celebrate a 9 year anniversary in LA and a 5 five year anniversary in NYC.

To mark the occasion, they have a stellar line-up of comedians and artists, which include:

Baron Vaughn (Superstore)
Joel Kim Booster (Search Party)
Mike Hollingsworth (BoJack Horseman)
Mike L. Mayfield (Midnight Gospel)
Brandie Posey (Lady to Lady)
Kati Prescott (Showtime)
Bryan Brinkman (SNL)
Dan Pinto (Nickelodeon)
& more!

The Picture This! 9 to 5 Anniversary is set to stream Sat. Apr. 17th at 6PM PT/9PM ET and tickets are only, GASP, $10. Go get them here right now.

Here’s a First Look at Birdgirl, Coming to Adult Swim in April

March 17, 2021
News
adult swim, birdgirl, erik richter, paget brewster

If you were ever a fan of Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Adult Swim has got the spin-off that is just for you. Even if you’re not even acquainted with Harvey Birdman or any of those oblique, adult animated takes on the superhero cartoons of old, Birdgirl still looks pretty damn fun.

Just see for yourself with this first look here

The one and only Paget Brewster voices Birdgirl leading of a cast that includes such comedy favorites as Sonia Denis, Lorelei Ramirez, Rob Delaney, Negin Farsad, Tony Hale, Kether Donohue, and more.

If this is at all up your alley, look for the premiere of Birdgirl to happen on Apr. 4th at Midnight on Adult Swim.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 51: Candice Thompson & Thriving?

News
candice thompson, netflix afterparty, rutherford falls

Candice Thompson has managed to thrive, as much as you can, in quarantine. She has been writing on The Netflix Afterparty, recording multiple podcasts, and manifesting her home to be as prepared for this time and the potential dystopian future. TCB’s Jake Kroeger and Candice have quite the time figuring out what they’re going to do in the not so distant future as the world keeps sinking into chaos (and yes, we talk aliens too). Also, “hot” takes on Rutherford Falls and the possibility of content consumption sinking after the pandemic ends.

Comedy from Australia has been making its way more and more over the last several years, the latest delightful export being Aunty Donna and the prospect of more adult animated programs coming from the Aussies is very, very enticing.

So, keep an eye, as we will be doing, on what’s to come down the line from Princess Bento.

Pick of the Day: Slumber Party with Maria Bamford: LA DWC Benefit 4/17

March 16, 2021
News

Maria Bamford never ceases to amaze both as a comedian and a human being especially when it comes to how much she gives of herself to us all. She did so many hours of virtual comedy right as the pandemic started and then even went as far as to do a comedy-group therapy hybrid show as a live-stream.

Now, she’s even topping all of that with her latest live-stream, Slumber Party, exclusively at Rushtix, that will be raising money for the LA Downtown Women’s Center. On April 17th, starting at 8PM PT/11PM ET, Maria will not only be doing her latest hour of stand-up and a live Q&A with the audience from the live-stream chat, but she’ll also be reading all the viewers a book while they all go to sleep and keep the stream going as she sleeps all the way until she wakes up. To our knowledge, this will be the first live comedy event of its kind and leave it to Maria to blaze a trail by sleeping during a show.

Tickets are $10 and proceeds (after costs) go to the LA Downtown Women’s Center.

Get more info, see for yourself that this Slumber Party is really happening, and get tickets from Rushtix here.

Get Your First Look at SXSW Online 2021’s Cross Country Comedy Club Showcase

March 15, 2021
News
acme comedy co, dynasty typewriter, hollywood improv, sxsw, the stand, zanies chicago

We had previously told you that SXSW was going virtual for the entirety of their program this year as a result of the pandemic and that, for comedy, they had collected exclusive performances from some of the most well known and respected comedy clubs across the country. That includes The Stand, Acme Comedy Co., Dynasty Typewriter, Hollywood Improv, Zanies Chicago, and more.

Well, SXSW Online 2021 is happening this week, Mar. 16th-Mar. 20th, and you can take a gander at what that all looks like (including Joel Kim Booster performing in front of marionettes) as this sneak peek was just posted on Twitter. It’s nice to see that it’s not just a bunch of Zoom shows and a reminder of how much we can’t wait to get back to watching live comedy in person.

Tiffany Haddish Wins a Grammy and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm Gets 2 Oscar Noms

March 15, 2021
News
borat subsequent moviefilm, grammys, oscars, tiffany haddish

Though the Grammys and the Oscars aren’t anywhere nearly dedicated to celebrating comedy in any really big way, there was some good news from both for the art form of comedy.

First off, Tiffany Haddish won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album for the audio version of her Netflix special, Black Mitzvah. Haddish is the first black woman since Whoopi Goldberg won in 1986, a fact that gets adorably revealed here during a taping of Haddish’s current gig as host of Kids Say the Darndest Things. Of the big comedy specials that get Grammy consideration for Best Comedy Album, Haddish definitely earned her Grammy.

How I found out I won a Grammy while working on @KidsSayDarndest I am so Honored to share with the kids. Full situation is on my YouTube page. pic.twitter.com/pYzmt4nIgo

— Tiffany Haddish (@TiffanyHaddish) March 15, 2021

Earlier this morning, the nominations for this year’s Oscars were revealed and while there is a lot of talk about the amount of diversity and inclusion throughout all of the nominees. It should also be noted that Borat Subsequent Moviefilm‘s breakout co-star Maria Bakalova earned herself a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination alongside the film’s Best Adapted Screenplay nomination (going to Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, Dan Swimer, Nina Pedrad, Peter Baynham, Erica Rivinoja, Dan Mazer, Jena Friedman, and Lee Kern). It’s sort of wild to think of something like Borat Subsequent Moviefilm given the still crowded field of heart-wrenching prestige dramas, yet, here we are.

So, even though awards season presents a bunch of the entertainment biz congratulating itself, it does seem like it’s getting marginally better.

Pick of the Day: You’ll Find This Humerus 4/1

March 15, 2021
News
aparna nancherla, brittany carney, brooklyn free clinic, chris duffy, joyelle johnson, mary beth marone, Sarah Cooper, zachary bravo

Pandemic or no, the American health care system is still broken and doesn’t provide equal access to basic treatment and care for all people. Thus, the existence of free clinics are crucial and even more so in this historic time. The Brooklyn Free Clinic is one such establishment that is “a student-run free clinic addressing health disparities in Brooklyn through service and education at SUNY Downstate.”

To support the BFC, the likes of Aparna Nancherla, Sarah Cooper, Mary Beth Barone, Chris Duffy, Brittany Carney, Joyelle Johnson, and Zachary Brazo are all virtually gathering to do an exclusive comedy fundraiser for the BFC. Virtual or no, that’s the sort of line-up worth catching for this special You’ll Find This Humerus evening of comedy.

It’s a $10 donation to the BFC that will get you access to the live-stream that goes live on Thurs. Apr. 1st at 4PM PT/7PM ET. Go get ’em here.

Get Your First Look and Listen at Central Park Season 2 with “Weehawken Rap”

March 12, 2021
News
apple tv plus, central park, weehawken nj

Central Park might be one of the best reasons to get Apple TV+. The very first season was an exuberant mix of clever commentary on municipal government and environmental politics, meta humor, and oh-so crafty songs that really takes the occasional musical spirit of Bob’s Burgers and runs like the wind with it.

Even if political efficacy and musicals aren’t your thing, Loren Bouchard, Nora Smith, and Josh Gad really whip up some magic with this show (and have already gotten renewed for a third season even before the second season hasn’t premiered yet).

You can get just a dollop of what we’re talking about with these several bars about Weehawken, NJ from this upcoming second season, premiering June 25th on Apple TV+.

Pick of the Day: Tiff Stevenson – New Thoughts and Old Flames 3/28

March 12, 2021
News
next up comedy, stand up comedy, tiff stevenson, virtual comedy

Streaming from the UK, the amazing Tiff Stevenson has been doing comedy virtually every which way she can and has maintained her sharp, smashing comedy stylings throughout all of lockdown whether it be IG Live, Zoom, etc. Stevenson was one of the UK comedians that was making headway in the States while already being plenty established across the pond.

We were lucky enough to see her in the lovely, intimate setting of the Lyric Hyperion whenever she was in LA and it assured us that you really ought to catch her wherever she’s playing, virtual or otherwise.

So, she’s doing an hour that’s a mix of old and new called New Thoughts and Old Flames that’s streaming on Sun. Mar. 28th at 11AM PT/2PM ET/7PM BST and tickets are only £9. Go get them here.

Nikki Glaser to Host The Hall of Flame: Top 100 Comedy Central Roast Moments

March 11, 2021
News
comedy central, comedy roast, hall of flame, nikki glaser, roast, top 100

When it comes to comedy roasting these days, it’s pretty clear that Nikki Glaser is one of the best in the game and has been for the last several roasts put on by Comedy Central.

With Comedy Central going through their vault of their numerous roast specials for the upcoming “Hall of Flame” series, it’s subsequently pretty perfect that Nikki is hosting (and very likely adding her very own whipsmart commentary on the line-up of clips to be presented).

Starting Mon. Mar. 29th at 10PM, this “Hall of Flame” will be cherry picking 100 choice clips throughout their entire roasting history. Get a taste of what’s to come from Nikki and “the Hall” here.

NBC Developing Immigrant Family Comedy Based on Chris Garcia’s Life

March 11, 2021
News
chris garcia, nbc

(via Deadline)

The story of Chris Garcia and his Cuban immigrant family is one of the more compelling stories we’ve heard in our time watching stand-up comedy here at TCB. Garcia’s bit wherein he impersonates his dad roasting him as a response to any of Chris’ jokes is indeed one of his best (as you can see here).

Additionally, Chris got acclaim from his limited series podcast Scattered that followed the journey of trying to honor his late father’s wishes by spreading his ashes in Cuba.

It’s thus great news to hear that Chris is going to be developing a comedy based on the story of his family and his life at NBC (along with Mr. Iglesias creator Kevin Hench). Unlike many sitcoms based on the lives of comedians, this series, thus far, won’t follow Chris as a comedian, but rather see him in his younger years when he was in love with poetry. We can’t wait to see what Garcia and Hench work up.

With that in mind, we sincerely hope it gets a series green light in the very not so distant future.

Pick of the Day: Eddie Pepitone 3/24

March 11, 2021
News
eddie pepitone, nowhere comedy club, stand up

It’s quite unfortunate that the world has not really gotten to see Eddie Pepitone headline following The NY Times naming his latest special, For The Masses, as the Funniest Comedy Special of 2020. While the chance to see Pepitone headline a packed venue in person might be still relatively far off (and you can only see him on a regular basis during Live from the Bunker IG Live-streams), you’ll have a chance coming up to see Eddie do an extended virtual set.

On Wed. Mar. 24th at 5PM PT/8PM ET, Pepitone will bring his signature satirical rants and subversive meta commentary (online) at Nowhere Comedy Club. Eddie is one of the few comedians who’s energy can reach through the void of the Internet to still come through hilariously to whatever screen we’d be watching it on.

Tickets for this latest exclusive Pepitone performance are $10 (and $30 for a VIP meet-and-greet). You best go snag them up here.

Apple TV Plus Renews Musical Comedy Series “Central Park” for Season 3

March 10, 2021
News
apple tv plus, central park, loren bouchard

Very quietly throughout this time in lockdown, Loren Bouchard has been building his animated comedy empire. Bob’s Burgers place in the pantheon of beloved adult animated series is more than secure while currently airing its 11th season. The Great North, which he EPs and is co-created by the Molyneux Sisters (with whom Bouchard has dutifully had among his top ranks at Bob’s Burgers) is getting its footing quite nicely as another feel good, yet delightfully and wonderfully strange family comedy.

Now, Central Park, which Bouchard co-created with Josh Gad and Nora Smith, is just about to premiere its second season on Apple’s exclusive streaming service, Apple TV Plus and, officially as of today, has been tapped for a third season. As Loren calculated in a tweet, that renewal equals almost 30 new episodes of the sensational community focused, edu-taining, meta, musical comedy and well over a 100 new songs.

Do yourself a favor if you need a pick me up (even if you’re not a “musicals” person) and give Central Park a shot in your quarantine binge watch queue.

You’ll be able to get into the second season of Central Park and sing along with dozens of songs starting Fri. Jun. 25th.

Seasons 2 and 3 of Central Park mean 29 more episodes, and something like 115 new songs. 115! The people who make this show dazzle me with their talent and ambition and will. Apple and 20th have shown their will too. I’m honored to be a part of something with this much chutzpah.

Pick of the Day: John Cleese & Rob Schneider Misbehave in Your Living Room 3/20

March 10, 2021
News
john cleese, rob schneider

Truly, this is just a wild thing that’s happening that may not have happened in the before times. The prospect of Rob Schneider and John Cleese taking the stage together opens a whole world of possibilities and has our wheels spinning as to what might actually happen as actor/comedian Schneider who, for us, is best remembered as the motivational sort-of hypeman in The Water Boy, interviews comedy icon Cleese (Monty Python, Fawlty Towers) and where the rabbit hole of their conversation might lead.

Also, the audience can ask questions in addition to getting access for a VIP Meet-and-Greet for a premium price. Called John Cleese & Rob Schneider Misbehave in Your Living Room, this event is set to stream on Sat. Mar. 20th at 1PM PT/4PM ET. Tickets are $15, but have tiers all the way up to $750 (it’s for individual meet-and-greets and a signed poster). Get tickets from Rushtix here.

This week’s TCB Field Report welcomes comedian/writer/actor/social media prankster extraordinaire (and one of our longtime favorites) Yassir Lester to go over the continually rocky times that we and comedy are going through.

That includes making some much needed updates with animated characters of yesteryear, SXSW, one of the world’s biggest festivals, doing their entire program virtually (with comedy clubs around the country offering SXSW exclusive streamed performances), how virtual writers’ room might be a little bit better than the in-person equivalent, and how he is totally fine with waiting to perform live and in person whenever that’s completely safe to do (and how other folks comedy should be too).

SXSW Online 2021 Announces a Comedy Line-Up Featuring the Some of America’s Most Renowned Comedy Clubs

March 9, 2021
News
acme comedy co, beth stelling, dynasty typewriter, erin jackson, gotham comedy club, hollywood improv, lara beitz, laughing skull lounge, Monroe Martin III, reggie watts, Shannan Paul, Shaunak Godkhindi, sxsw, the stand

It is not too far from this time last year that the devastating news that SXSW was going to be cancelled was going to be delivered. Along with its cancellation came the nixing of a wide-ranging program of live comedy that had become one of Texas’ biggest annual comedy events.

As we are still in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic, SXSW is going entirely virtual for 2021. They did not want to be deterred from not only highlighting the best in comedy wherever the festival could find it, but note how truly special it is and help it survive through its various “homes” and “family members”.

Thusly, SXSW Comedy is opting to have exclusive performances (done with strict COVID-19 safety protocols) from the some of the most hallowed comedy clubs in the country including Acme Comedy Co in Minneapolis, Dynasty Typewriter and the Hollywood Improv in Los Angeles, Gotham Comedy Club in NYC, and Zanies Comedy Club in Chicago with the celebrated comedy stylings of Beth Stelling, Reggie Watts, Erin Jackson, Monroe Martin III, Clayton English, Chris Porter, Emma Willmann, Dan Soder, Joel Kim Booster, and Matty Ryan. Doug Loves Movies, Matt Besser’s improv4humans, selections from The Creek & The Cave’s Bring Back Laughs will also be part of this marvelous cross-country virtual SXSW comedy round-up.

This should be a momentous occasion coming on a year of lockdown in America and how we have all endured and comedy is still going (and will hopefully keep surviving) despite being challenged like it has never been challenged before.

This year’s online edition of SXSW is set for Mar. 16th-20th and you can get more info on their comedy offerings as well as buy/register for a pass here.

Pick of the Day: 99 Seats Later: A virtual conversation with the women who helped found The Groundlings Theatre 3/29

March 9, 2021
News
Allison Dunbar, groundlings, laraine newman, Phyllis Katz, Suzanne Kent, Terry Bolo, Tracy Newman, Victoria Carroll Bell, women's history month

One of Los Angeles’ most storied and longest running comedy venues is none other than The Groundlings. Part of the reason that they’ve been around for so long comes from their gathering of pioneers of sketch and improv under its roof decades ago and keeping its demanding program/main company alive and well throughout all these years. From there, it hasn’t been surprising to see Groundlings alum make up a great deal of the SNL cast.

So, as part of Women’s History Month, it would be great to hear the stories from the female trailblazers that helped the ascent of The Groundlings Theatre to its historic and revered status that it has today. On Mon. Mar. 29th, Current Groundlings Main Company members’ Allison Dunbar and Annie Sertich will moderate an exclusive discussion with such women including Laraine Newman, Terry Bolo, Victoria Carroll Bell, Phyllis Katz, Suzanne Kent, Tracy Newman, and Lynne Marie Stewart.

The live-stream panel discussion will be called 99 Seats Later and is set to stream at 4PM PT on Mon. 3/29. Tickets are $10 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

Get a Taste of Season 4 of FXx’s Curated Short Form Series “Cake”

March 8, 2021
News
cake, fx, fx on hulu, fxx, season 4, teaser

The first three rounds of FX’s Cake brought several slices of a wildly multi-layered, multi-flavored “cake” featuring live-action, animation, musical comedy, etc. from all round the world.

They’re thankfully doing another round of it and that will be served up shortly on Thurs. Mar. 11th in fact. Apparently, it will be premiering on FXx, but it’s very likely that you’ll just stream it on Hulu the next day (when it’s available for streaming).

There’s a bit of teaser that just gives a little dollop’s worth of what’s to come. If you need a break from reality (and we’re guessing that you do), this new season of Cake might be just what you need.

Watch the teaser for season 4 of Cake here.
