Maria Bamford Shows What She Bought at Amoeba Records/Could Host a Home Shopping Show

Maria Bamford is so wonderful and hysterical in so many ways like all throughout her latest album Ask Me About My New God.

Even when she is going to Amoeba Records and talks about a bunch of books she picked up, it’s pretty damn funny. Watch her episode of Amoeba Records’ web series What’s In My Bag at the link.

For Louis C.K.’s Live at the Beacon Theater, Patrice O’Neal’s Unreleased, Patrice O’Neal’s Mr. P, Maria Bamford’s The Special Special Special, Tig Notaro’s Live, Hannibal Buress’ My Name Is Hannibal, and more, you can pay what you want and decide how much of that goes to the artist, charity, and the organizers of this fantastic phenomenon, Humble Bundle.

That’s the name of their game at Humble Bundle and they have made millions for, as said above, charity, the artists, and themselves doing this for video games and are now stepping into comedy and with awesome curator Steve Feinartz (director of The Bitter Buddha), it’s one hell of a package that you could even snag for $10.

Check out their announcement video to get the whole picture and then make sure you get in on this because the offer will only be good for two weeks.

Wits Announces Fall 2013 Lineup Featuring Dave Hill, Maria Bamford, Jim Gaffigan, David Cross, and More

Wits, the true blue variety show taped, broadcast, etc. from the Fitzgerald Theater in Minnesota just announced the line-up for their series of shows coming this fall and it almost reads like a festival line-up.

In addition to have great musical acts such as Aimee Mann, Ted Leo, Yo La Tengo, and Busdriver, Paul F. Tompkins, Tim Heidecker, Dave Hill, Jim Gaffigan, Maria Bamford, David Cross, Ellie Kemper, and more are set to be part of various Wits episodes often in pretty great mini radioplays.

Luckily, they do tape much of the show and put it on YouTube like this clip of Maria Bamford and Bill Corbett & Kevin Murphy from Rifftrax spin on the Wizard of Oz.

Setting sail at the tail end of Summer thanks to MaximumFun.org, Splitsider, and KCRW, The Atlantic Comedy & Music Festival will feature three nights of of Maria Bamford, John Hodgman, Marc Maron, Eugene Mirman, Kristen Schaal & Kurt Braunohler, and much more. Yes, it’ll cost a pretty penny or many more than that, but definitely would be our cruise trip of choice if we we’re going to spend for being on a boat.

Hopefully, this will redefine the stereotypes of being a cruise ship comedian.

The Imaginary Radio Program Should Take Over the Actual Radio

July 21, 2011
Uncategorized
comedy shows, drennon davis, hollywood, imaginary radio, maria bamford, nerdist theater

Ever hate what’s broadcast on terrestrial radio these days?

Did you know that terrestrial radio even existed still?

Did you ever just enjoy switching between the radio stations on Grand Theft Auto?

Do you live anywhere near the LA area and need to see something both hilarious and groundbreaking?

Whatever your answers to these questions were, every single one of you reading this should just go and see Drennon Davis’ rehashing of what radio should be, the Imaginary Radio Program as quickly as you can touch the dial on your car radio, which you probably never use anymore.

The Imaginary Radio Program, as a live comedy show, not only lives up to its name, but exceeds expectation in what you could possibly think it is.  Producer and host, Drennon Davis takes the audience on a journey through airwaves of his own brilliant comedic mind via innovative beatboxing/singing and a whole host of characters, voices, and impressions.  At a given moment, one can be getting into heavy metal song that Drennon samples all from his own voice and efforts, then witness the channel “change” to talk radio of someone who just can’t stop talking about how much they love their cats to a channel that plays every Red Hot Chili Peppers song ever.  Despite the interrupting various “radio programs”, Drennon’s highly seasoned skills as a performer both comedically and musically allow for the live show to appear seamless.

Here’s a solo version of the Imaginary Radio Program done at the Meltdown Show a few weeks ago.

As if Davis’ beatboxing a ZZ Top song then turning the dial to the Mexican Hat Dance to Aboriginal music wasn’t amazing enough, the Imaginary Radio Program also includes some of the best comedians, not only in LA, but some of the funniest people working today. Already, Brent Weinbach (Lopez Tonight), Moshe Kasher (John Oliver’s NY Stand-Up Show), and Aisha Tyler (Archer) have been worked into a few of the hilarious “stations” during the show.  For the next edition of the program, Davis has enlisted the help of none other than the fantastic and amazing Maria Bamford, who has entire cadre of wildly original and hysterical characters to make for a whole separate edition of the Imaginary Radio.

With a stellar line-up of comedians as mentioned, the more amazing thing to watch is to see them in a whole different element outside of stand-up or sketch or anything that you’ve really seen before.  Though having just started it’s run here in LA, it’s one of those comedy shows that push the art form of comedy to places where laughs happen at the most wonderfully unexpected times and places. That’s why we think it should take the place of what’s actually on the real airwaves.

Though Davis has performed around the country, his show, the Imaginary Radio Program takes place monthly at the Nerdist Theater in the back room of Meltdown Comics.  For those that frequent the Nerdist Theater for their insanely popular Wednesday stand-up show Meltdown, be aware that other sensational shows like the Imaginary Radio happen on other days of the week.  In fact, you can catch the Imaginary Radio tomorrow on July 21st at 8PM for $10 with Maria Bamford, DJ Douggpound, and more.  If you can’t catch this one, check back at the Comedy Bureau for details on the next episode.

3) Humblebrag’s monthly power list is out on Grantland!

4) The Comic’s Comic pointed out yet another random joke stealing accusation today. Hey people excited to be whistleblowers only for the sake of being a whistleblower, realize that there are plenty of incredibly creative and imaginative people not just in comedy, but the entirety of the entertainment industry, and that the possibility of someone coming up with very similar to what someone else came up with is very likely.  In fact, it happens every single day.

If I had a nickel for every time I nearly had an aneurism when I read a log line for movie that just sold that’s basically what I’ve spend the better part of a year writing or hearing a similar joke that’s on an extremely esoteric topic to one that I have by a much more famous comedian than me, well, I would never ever work again.  There’s a reason several intellectual property cases get thrown out every year because they are baseless and more often than not, the accusers care less about what they’re creating and more about the end result of trying to get rich quick.

Our advice: Think very carefully before you throw around the label of a “joke thief” around because it’s very hard to get rid of even if has no foundation in fact.

Hamclown: The One Type of Clown I Like

May 26, 2011
Uncategorized
alexandria hotel, brody stevens, comedy scene, comedy shows, independent, jackie kashian, kyle kinane, los angeles, maria bamford, recap, review, rory scovel

What exactly is a “Hamclown”?  I was one of those silent many that had an aversion to clown, but Hamclown is something different altogether and certainly not to be feared by anybody.

If you type “hamclown” into Google, you’ll actually get redirected to results for “ham clown” and never see any of the results for the amazing comedy and music variety show taking place in downtown LA on 5th and Spring.

Instead, you’ll first be directed to hamsexy.com, which, as far as I can gather, is a blog about amateur radio.  Even though hamsexy.com has been around for much longer than Hamclown, the results for googling “hamclown” need to change.

On the last Thursday of every month, producers and talented stand-up comedians themselves Josh Androsky and Grant Pardee take over the 2nd Floor of the Alexandria Hotel, more commonly known as the Mezz.  Their comedy extravaganza features several of LA’s best stand-ups, Kyle Kinane, Rory Scovel, Brody Stevens, Maria Bamford, and more, sketch comedy that borders on a full scale stage production, and amazing local bands to close out the show.

Really, Hamclown goes above and beyond for laughter from their constantly growing audience. At the last edition of Hamclown, Androsky and Pardee went for a prom theme, temporarily renaming their show “Hamprom”, dressing up as if it was actually prom; Androsky wore a dress and heels.  They even had a prom photographer with a prom backdrop.  As if that wasn’t enough, Androsky went into a spectacular musical number while still in a dress and heels featuring back-up dancers and lots of goo in which he let out his inner woman and then wooed the “hot high school quarterback” (played by Aaron Alberstein).

I would almost say that you get your bang for your buck at Hamclown, but that would be a false statement as you don’t spend anything to see this youthful comedic romp in a cool bohemian space that has to have been used in several rock music videos of either Lenny Kravitz or Perry Farrell.  It’s free of charge just like many independently produced comedys shows around LA are, but, already, Hamclown has been mentioned in the LA Times as part of a story about the exciting group of comedy shows taking place in Downtown.

If you’re convinced or curious, the next Hamclown is taking place tomorrow 9PM, as mentioned, at the Mezz on the 2nd Floor of the Alexandria Hotel, 501 S. Spring St., Los Angeles, CA featuring two of the Comedy Bureau’s favorite comedians: Ron Lynch and Jackie Kashian.  In other words, be there (you won’t be square if you don’t, but you’ll regret your absence).  Follow them on Twitter and Facebook or check back at the Comedy Bureau for more updates and possibly what exactly a “hamclown” is other than a hip, hilarous comedy circus minus the animals and clowns (not a big fan of either anyway).

8) Yesterday, the Comedy Bureau posted the article, “Why are THEY on the Show?” about the unfortunate trading of spots on shows that happens in LA and some readers were wondering a few things.  Specifically, The Comic’s Comic wondered about comics who struggle to get stage time starting their own room.  I have no problem with other comics starting their own room to get their own stage time if they can’t get it elsewhere.  Again, I reiterate stay away from trading spots.  Whether they are good or bad as comics is a matter of subjectivity to me really, but, as I point out in the article, if they can find an audience of their own, my opinion doesn’t really matter.  Another reader wondered that if a person works the Haha, Ice House, Comedy Store, Improv that they should get a shot at performing at another room.  First off, there are plenty of comics that are (and I’m putting this very politely) raw that get to perform at all of those clubs.  Once more, as I pointed in the article, plenty of comics can get laughs, but if they’re not funny to the booker, why should the booker put them up?  Last week, I saw someone do nothing but offensive material jumbling up the most controversial topics to date (i.e. Libya, Tsunami, and Liz Taylor’s Death) into one dick joke ridden mess and kill.  Did I laugh? I didn’t even smile.  Just because this comic happened to do good on a certain night because they had a good spot on the show, I don’t feel obligated or guilted to promote their comedy as, plain and simple, I don’t find them funny.  If you have any further questions regarding this article or anything else, please send them to thecomedybureau@gmail.com.

robdelaney:

THURSDAY (St. Patrick’s Day) at the UCB: Come see me, Dave Holmes, Maria Bamford, Megan Amram & Sharon Horgan, co-writer & star of my FAVORITE comedy series, the BBC’s “Pulling.” I am SHITTING that Sharon Horgan is doing our show because she’s such a brilliant comet. Our show is always fun, but this one will be bananas. My oldest comedy pal Dave Holmes who taught me how to be funny, candidate for most amazing living writer Megan Amram, towering space genius Maria Bamford, and the dangerous legend to whom I look for spiritual comedic guidance, Sharon Horgan. I am straight up jizzing all over the place. I hope you will come see us and do the same. I’d be grateful to anyone who reposted this.
