SF Sketchfest, the first mighty comedy festival of every year, is really happening once more. The nearly three week comedy extravaganza that takes over all of SF already has a gigantic line-up, but has just announced more than a few additions that might just make you make the trek to San Francisco if you weren’t already planning to (or just going in general if you already live in the Bay Area).

Just added for 2023 SF Sketchfest are:

  • Fred Armisen Residency: Comedy for Bass Players but Everyone is Welcome
3 nights with a different guest bass player each night – special guests TBA
  • The Red Room Orchestra play the music of “Twin Peaks” & “Repo Man”
  • Dumb People Town with The Sklar Bros. and Daniel Van Kirk
  • James Adomian with Jes Tom
  • Ilana Glazer Presents: Alison Leiby: Oh God, A Show About Abortion
  • Mic Drop: A Night of Music, Rap and Comedy with Drennon Davis, EpicLLOYD, Eliza Skinner and more

Pick of the Day: Lance Bangs Screens Recent & Archival Footage (in LA) 9/3

August 26, 2022
News
brain dead studios, fred armisen, lance bangs, los angeles comedy, natalie palamides

From Moses Storm‘s critically acclaimed debut special to Jackass to a music video made especially for the late George Harrison, there are seemingly so few things that Lance Bangs hasn’t done with some kind of motion picture camera. That said, there is so much in Lance’s archives that’s worthy of having its own exhibition in some sort of contemporary art museum that the general public haven’t ever come close to seeing.

That’s why it’s important to absolutely be in attendance whenever Lance does his every-once-in-awhile screenings where he shows a specially curated selection from his own personal archives, which, thankfully will be happening Sat. Sept. 3rd at 7:30PM at Brain Dead Studios on Fairfax in LA.

As if that wasn’t special enough, Lance will present special performances from Fred Armisen and Natalie Palamides, music from Britt Walford (Slint, The Breeders) David Pajo (Slint, Gang of Four) Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Head Wound City) Mike Watt (Minutemen, Dos, Firehose) and other special guests (as well as DJ sets by Chris Holmes, SAM i, and friends).

Tickets for all of this are $25 and you really ought to snag them here before they sell out.

Get Your First Look at Los Espookys’ Season 2

July 29, 2022
News
ana fabrega, fred armisen, hbo, julio torres, los espookys, season 2

Long ago, in the Summer of 2019, Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega, and Fred Armisen unleashed the horror fantasy comedy series Los Espookys into the world. The mesh of all those genres were only starting to come into prominence (and What We Do in the Shadows definitely hadn’t gotten its due yet) and Los Espookys, especially with the original voices of Torres and Fabrega, was truly unlike anything that had been on television before.

The macabre has never been this trippy and funny and, on this side of the pandemic, it might be the perfect thing for Summer 2022. You can see for yourself in the first look at season 2 here, which is finally coming over 3 years after its series premiere.

Then, make a reminder on your phone for Fri. Sept. 16th when Los Espookys officially returns, exclusively on HBO.

Pick of the Day: Lance Bangs Presents (in LA) 9/2

News

If you Google “Lance Bangs”, you’ll first read that he’s an American Filmmaker. While that’s very true, Bangs is also a curator of the underground, seeking out those thrilling voices, often in and around comedy that you hope to bare witness to at a live comedy and/or music show. Having worked with the likes of Jackass to Tyler the Creator to Marc Maron to Nirvana to George Harrison to John Hodgman to his latest work on Moses Storm’s acclaimed HBO special, Trash White, Bangs is one of the most respected figures behind the scenes.

So, the fact that he’s curating a very special night of comedy at The Elysian come Fri. Sept. 2nd should be something you mark down on your calendar immediately, right after you immediately get tickets.

The line-up features some of the best folks he’s worked with that happen to be some of the best, most clever, most subversive, funny voices in comedy.

That includes:

  • Fred Armisen
  • Reggie Watts
  • Girl God
  • Natalie Palamides
  • Caleb Hearon
  • Moses Storm
  • Brandon Wardell
  • Ian Karmel
  • David Gborie

It’s such a stellar line-up and you can see all of that for only $20. Go get your tickets for Lance Bangs Presents @ The Elysian on 9/2 right here.

Largo at the Coronet Theatre Is Officially Back Starting in July

June 25, 2021
News
anthony jeselnik, ben schwartz, fortune feimster, fred armisen, margaret cho, patton oswalt, pete holmes, tom papa
One of LA’s most treasured venues when it comes to comedy is the Largo at the Coronet Theatre. It was home to a big handful of the best and biggest acts in LA that wanted to play a special sort of intimate crowd. Patton Oswalt, Sarah Silverman, Ben Schwartz/Thomas Middleditch, etc. etc. all played here regularly.
Then, for the pandemic, Largo had to close its doors like every other venue in town and its fate seem to hang in the balance of however long they would have to keep it dark. Thankfully, Conan O’Brien and Team Coco opted to tape the last leg of Conan at Largo and now the venue is set to reopen its doors with the same sort of very special, very intimate, exclusive performances that they’re renowned for.
Thus far, their schedule is as follows:
July 9 – Anthony Jeselnik and Enemies
July 10 – Ben Schwartz. Friends. Improv.
July 11 – Patton Oswalt and Friends
July 12 – Margaret Cho and Friends (with Atsuko Okatsuka & Demitri Martin)
July 13 – Pete Holmes: Living At Largo (with special guests Reggie Watts, Lara Beitz, and more!)
July 14 – An Evening with Fortune Feimster and Tom Papa (with special guest Bill Burr)
July 15 – Fred Armisen and Friends
July 16 – Chelsea Peretti and Friends
Tickets go on sale for all of these shows on Monday, Jun. 28th at 10AM PT and you best make a reminder as they will very likely sell out very fast like they used to in the before times.

Please Enjoy Trailer for Indie Horror Comedy Set in LA Comedy Scene “Too Late”

April 30, 2021
News

The wires between comedy and horror get marvelously crossed more and more these days to produce some great, out-of-left field movies and TV shows (just think of a good fifth of what Adult Swim puts out). Another entry into this burgeoning hybrid genre is the upcoming indie film, Too Late.

This particular film from D.W. Thomas actually takes the intersection of comedy and horror quite literally as the story is set in the LA comedy scene coupled with a dark, evil presence nestled deep within it. Beloved LA venue Dynasty Typewriter is prominently featured as our so many LA comedy staples including stars Alyssa Limperis and Ron Lynch (who seems to be playing an insidious alternate version of himself/host of the famed Tomorrow! w/Ron Lynch) as well as supporting cast Will Weldon, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Fred Armisen, Jenny Zigrino, and Brooks Wheelan.

See what Thomas has cooked up with the trailer for Too Late here, then look for its release on Fri. Jun. 25th.

Pick of the Day: NYE Comedy Mega Show 2021

December 28, 2020
News
andrew michaan, brent weinbach, fred armisen, moshe kasher, natasha leggero, reggie watts

Though it has to be virtual, NYE’s comedy shows are still very much happening and they’re streaming from all around the globe (which should make it so much easier to tune into whatever your favorite(s) might be).

We’d like to start off by highlighting one of this particular NYE’s Comedy Mega Show that’ll ring in the New Year for the East Coast and the Midwest as well as feature a grand line-up of Reggie Watts, Natasha Leggero, Moshe Kasher, Fred Armisen, Brent Weinbach, and Andrew Michaan. Whether that would be in person or not, that’s pretty stellar for a New Year’s Eve comedy line-up.

Luckily, you can stream it safely from home and remember that time kind of still functions.

NYE’s Comedy Mega Show starts on Dec. 31st 8:30PM PT/11:30PM ET and tickets are $15-$25. Go get them here.

Showtime Orders Up Astronaut Workplace Comedy “Moonbase 8” With Armisen, Heidecker, and Reilly

August 20, 2020
News
fred armisen, john c reilly, jonathan krisel, showtime, tim heidecker

Joining in with Space Force and Avenue 5, there is going to be another space-centric workplace-ish comedy, time time coming from Showtime. Entitled Moonbase 8, it comes from the minds of series stars Fred Armisen, Tim Heidecker, and John C. Reilly and Jonathan Krisel who was instrumental to Baskets and Portlandia behind the camera.

Is it a trend of not-so-distant-future live action workplace comedy that is coming? It might be too early to tell, but three of them (and countless others that are undoubtedly in development) certainly signals networks sharing in a vision with their programming/development slates.

The quartet of Armisen, Heidecker, C. Reilly, and Krisel does excite us to think of a subtle, yet out-there comedy that tangles with the strangeness, in their own niche of strangeness, of attempting to go to the final frontier. Moonbase 8 is set to premiere in the fall and, with A24 attached, we can’t wait to see what super-stylish look they come up with for this.

Please Enjoy Trailer for Paula Pell and John Lutz’s Mystery Comedy “Mapleworth Murders”

Quibi really did snatch up quite a bit of content when amassing their war chest before their launch a few months ago. Even though so many folks that opted in for a free trial didn’t stick around after said free trial ended, Quibi can still stand tall with some recent Emmy nominations and still having shows up their sleeve that might just catch your eye once they roll them out.

One of those series is coming very soon, Mon. Aug. 10th in fact, from Paula Pell and John Lutz called Mapleworth Murders. From the trailer, the series not only trails murderers in a humble, sleepy town, but also calls into question why (as with so many similar mystery/crime shows) have so many murderers in one place. Mapleworth Murders boasts quite the ensemble cast with Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen, D’Arcy Carden, Tim Meadows, Patton Oswalt, Jack McBrayer, Pam Murphy, Ben Warheit, Annie Mumolo, Ike Barinholtz, Marry Holland, James Anderson, and Drew Tarver.

Whether or not you’ve got or still have Quibi, you can certainly enjoy Pell and Lutz’s joyful send-up of Murder She Wrote with its official trailer here.

July 23, 2020
News
brendon small, brian barlow, chris walsh, craig anton, davey johnson, david arquette, fred armisen, kate micucci, katie crown

You’ve seen that many annual, big time, tent pole events are opting to go virtual because of the global pandemic rather than just entirely postpone or cancel their plans for 2020. Comic-Con and JFL are indeed going to live-stream events and the same will be true of Tomorrow with Ron Lynch, the LA comedy variety treasure that has been faithfully bringing the weird/wonderful/hilarious to LA crowds every Saturday night now for 15 years.

This first virtual anniversary of Tomorrow with Ron Lynch will take place on Instagram Live where host Ron Lynch has been keeping Tomorrow going for months now @ronlynch1 on Saturdays at 11PM PT/2AM EST.

For the anniversary shows, they always round up some big guests as well as their all time favorites and this time is no different. Here’s the line-up for this Saturday’s 15 Year Anniversary:

Fred Armisen
David Arquette
Kate Micucci
Brendon Small
Craig Anton
Brett Loudermilk
Bangs the Clown
Jay London
THE CORE 4
Chris Walsh
Katie Crown
Brian Barlow
Davey Johnson
Michael Mortilla
Martin Olson
You might not get the complimentary food or cheap toys/party favors that normally come with every Tomorrow anniversary, but the delightfully strange spirit of Tomorrow with Ron Lynch will definitely be there like it always has been, whether virtually or in person.

Again, tune in on Sat. Jul. 25th at 11PM PT/2AM EST @ronlynch1 on IG Live

Pick of the Day: Vintage Basement with Max & Nicky 7/21

July 16, 2020
News
aparna nancherla, fred armisen, max and nicky, reggie watts, vintage basement

Vintage Basement with Max and Nicky had kept their semi-retro, semi-absurdist comedy/music variety show going pretty regularly as a live-stream at the start of quarantine, but have taken a bit of a break lately.

However, they’re back for July and they’ve got a powerhouse line-up of Fred Armisen, Aparna Nancherla, and Reggie Watts (and more are TBA!). No matter who Max and Nicky Weinbach have on their show, it’s always a charming, refreshing, stylish and silly collection of bits and song.

This edition of Vintage Basement with Max & Nicky will also be presented by the beloved LA venue, Dynasty Typewriter & Y’All Got a Radio and 10% of ticket sales will be going to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

All you have to spend for one hell of a show and giving a little to the NAACP LDF is $5-$10. So, go get your tickets ASAP here.

HBO Orders Spanish-Language Comedy ‘Los Espookys’ Written by Fred Armisen, Julio Torres, and Ana Fabrega to Series

Well, this is a much welcome surprise to find its way to HBO.

In case you didn’t know, Julio Torres and Ana Fabrega have been been off-beat English language comedy gems for quite some time and we can only imagine what will come with a Spanish language comedy that they’re writing with Armisen. They’ll also been co-starring in Los Espookys with Fred as well as Bernardo Velasco and Cassandra Ciangherotti.

From the sounds of it, Los Espookys sounds kind of like Atlanta on FX, but done in Mexico City and focuses in on trying to make it in the horror genre rather than rap. That’s pretty much all we need to hear to wait with bated breath for the first teaser/trailer.

Modeled after Mikva Challenge (the successful civic engagement program developed for youth in Chicago), Action Civics LA provides opportunities for young people in Southern California to engage in political action, community problem-solving, and seeks to increase youth voice in local decision-making processes.

There are many comedies following the trials and tribulations of a relationship. Off the top of our head, we can’t think of one that involves the couple whose love is in question forming a three piece rock band as a solution.

Zoe Lister-Jones wrote, directed, and co-starred in this nifty take on a romantic comedy entitled Band-Aid.

See what we’re talking about in this trailer.

It’s in theaters in limited release right now as well as available on VOD.

Also, as an added bonus, Fred Armisen is an unassuming neighbor that plays the drums.
