Pick of the Day: Velvet Tuesdays with Cameron Esposito (in LA) 10/10

October 3, 2023
News
cameron esposito, elysian theater, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy, variety show

We think all that we should have to say to get you to go to this is that Cameron Esposito is starting up a monthly show at the Elysian and then you would just go buy tickets here.

That said, we’ll fill you in on some details. Esposito remains as one of our favorite comedians for all of her wit, candor, and warmth that has only gotten more refined and nuanced since we’ve first saw her live on stage. The prospect of getting to see her live on a regular basis again is absolutely thrilling news and that will indeed be happening with Velvet Tuesdays with Cameron Esposito, a (for now) monthly show at the Elysian kicking off on Tues. Oct. 10th at 7:30PM.

The inaugural line-up will be stacked with the likes of Byron Bowers, Steph Tolev, Deb DiGiovanni, and Chad Damiani.

Tickets are $16 and we highly suggest getting on them right now right here before they sell out.

Pick of the Day: Cameron Esposito Works Out (in LA) 7/13

July 8, 2022
News
cameron esposito, largo, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

Since Cameron Esposito moved to LA several years ago via Chicago, they’ve been one of our favorite folks to watch and, for our money, a crucial voice in comedy at large. Her unflinching vulnerability and masterful storytelling and joke writing stick with us any time we see them on stage. When it comes to the pressing issues of our time, Cameron is one of the first comedians that we really want to hear weigh in.

Thus, if you have a chance to see Cameron do an hour of stand-up, please take it immediately. For LA folks, you’re in luck as they’re working out a new hour, hence Cameron Esposito Works Out, at Largo at the Coronet Theatre next week on Jul. 8th at 8:30PM PT. Tickets are $46 (including fees) and you can (and very much should) go get your tickets here.

Pick of the Day: The Lesbian Agenda with Sophie Santos (in NYC & LA) 6/13 & 6/28

June 8, 2022
News
ashley gavin, bell house, brooklyn, cameron esposito, comedy show, jess henderson, julia shiplett, liza treyger, matt rogers, maya deshmukh, nyc comedy, paul scheer, pride, sabrina wu, sdynee washington, sirbaby girl, sophie santos

Before even acknowledging that its Pride Month, any time of the year is a great time of year to catch Sophie Santos‘ quest for queer dominance via her creation, The Lesbian Agenda. That said, it’s Pride and it’s an especially good time to go support great queer artists of every background, especially when it comes to live comedy.

The Lesbian Agenda has already taken over both coasts by firmly planting roots in NYC and LA, which is a pretty great start to cultural domination in the U.S.

In fact, there are upcoming dates for both cities with The Lesbian Agenda taking over The Bell House in Brooklyn on Mon. Jun. 13th and Dynasty Typewriter in LA on Tues. Jun. 28th, both at 7:30PM local time. Both have incredibly stacked, festival-worthy line-ups including:

NYC:
Ashley Gavin
Sirbaby Girl
Matt Rogers
Sabrina Wu
Julia Shiplett
Jess Henderson
Maya Deshmukh as Cara Delevingne
Che Diaz

Tickets are $15 and $20 respectively and you can (and very much should) go get them here and here.

Pick of the Day: Big Rox (in LA) Tuesdays Starting 5/31

May 19, 2022
News
addie weyrich, cameron esposito, christine medrano, dana donnelly, free show, jared goldstein, los angeles comedy, milan patel, stand up comedy, Sydnee Washington

Comedy in LA has gotten to a point now where there’s a bevy of weekly comedy shows for you to catch every night of the week. Well, almost every night of the week has that, save for Tuesday. If Roast Battle isn’t your speed (and you don’t want to pay for cover, parking, and 2 drink min.), you might want something else.

Well, cue in Big Rox, a brand spanking new weekly FREE stand-up show from an amazing LA based trio of Addie Weyrich, Dana Donnelly, and Christine Medrano on the Eastside at the lovely restaurant aptly named, Jewel.

They’ll be taking on the mantle of the free weekly stand-up show you should be catching on Tuesdays and will be kicking off their run on May 31st at 7:30PM PT (doors 7PM PT). Their inaugural line-up including Cameron Esposito, Sydnee Washington, Jared Goldstein, and Milan Patel is a pretty perfect for a first show.

So, set a weekly reminder to go to Jewel, a jewel in the hidden jewel of a neighborhood, Rampart Village.

Pick of the Day: Cammy <3's You! 2/13

February 3, 2021
News
cameron esposito, dynasty typewriter, valentine's day

The warmth and candor of Cameron Esposito, for our money, is pretty unmatched in all of comedy. Truly, an evening with Cameron Esposito that she shares stories/stand-up/etc. is one that you should most certainly take.

So, despite a card company popularizing Valentine’s Day, sanitizing it from its dark past, and forcing the world to go through perfunctory acts of affection, Valentine’s Day weekend could be just actually lovely with a special live-stream with Cameron Esposito via Dynasty Typewriter.

On Feb. 13th at 6PM PT/9PM ET, Valentine’s Day Eve, Cameron will be giving us just that with Cammy <3’s You! Tickets for live-stream access are $5-$10 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Cameron Esposito: Home for the All-The-Days Thanksgiving Special Edition 11/25

November 13, 2020
News
cameron esposito, dynasty typewriter, thanksgiving

Well, it looks as though Thanksgiving is going to be have to done, like almost everything else this year, remotely, if at all. Continuing to be in quarantine/lockdown, it’s very likely that you won’t be able to dig into turkey and fixings with your family or friends like you would in the before times.

Yet, there’s still hope for some Thanksgiving week as Cameron Esposito will be a Thanksgiving Dad to us all with a very special virtual stand-up show with some TBA special guests, presented by Dynasty Typewriter. Esposito’s candor and warmth are the perfect recipe to bring feelings of joy, mirth, and togetherness at a time when those are in short supply.

Cameron Esposito’s Home for the All-The-Days: Thanksgiving Edition is set to stream on Wed. Nov. 25th at 5:30PM PT/8:30PM ET. Tickets are only $10. Go make this Thanksgiving just a little better and get tickets here.

Pick of the Day: A Benefit for Guns Down America 8/26

August 20, 2020
News
adam conover, cameron esposito, guns down america, josh johnson, nick guerra

Gun control, unfortunately, is still an issue in the U.S. amongst every other crucial issue that’s happening in the country right now. That being said, that also means that there is organizations and people that are still striving for a better future in regards to that issue (and that there is comedy benefit to boot).

So, Josh Johnson, Cameron Esposito, Adam Conover, Nick Guerra (and more TBA) will convene (virtually) at the Nowhere Comedy Club this coming Wed., Aug. 26th at 5:30PM PT/8:30PM ET to support Guns Down America, “a community powered organization that brings together Americans from across the country to solve our national gun crisis in strategic and creative ways.”

Given the actions of NRA as of late (and throughout the last several years), striving for real movement on gun control is imperative and this ought to be one sweet show in supporting efforts to make that happen.

Tickets are $25-$50 and you can (and should really) get tickets here.

AMC Signs Cameron Esposito, Jena Friedman, and Naomi Ekperigin To Develop True Crime Content

August 7, 2020
News
cameron esposito, naomi ekperigin

It may have seemed like an unlikely blend only a few years ago, but the mixture of comedy and true crime has been enormously successful, especially when you see the rise of shows such as My Favorite Murder and Last Podcast on the Left. Off of their own individual popularity, both podcasts were able to launch their very own networks and tour the entire globe on a regular basis.

AMC is now looking to tap into the vein, wisely so we think, and has just signed comedians Cameron Esposito, Jena Friedman, and Naomi Ekperigin (truly, some of our all time favorites working right now) to talent deals where they will bring their fantastic, unique comedic voices fully into the true crime realm.

It’s not hard to see where the three intersect with true crime in their comedy and how this could really bring something special to AMC and perhaps better foray into comedy if they choose to give them series on AMC’s very own network. Just watch this set from Naomi, Jena’s true crime set on Conan and/or Soft Focus, and Cameron’s special Rape Jokes and you’ll see for yourself. All three already deserved their own shows, but having them develop projects with their comedic sensibilities and different experiences and perspectives on true crime really ought to be something to watch out for.

Of course, we’ll keep you very well posted as to what their projects might become as soon as we hear about them.

Pick of the Day: Cameron Esposito: Live From Home 7/30

July 21, 2020
News
cameron esposito, dynasty typewriter, live stream, stand up

Cameron Esposito is virtually headlining once more via Dynasty Typewriter. The sharp, clever, and caring comedy of Esposito is something to always be enjoyed, but should especially something to be comforting and inspiring in these unsure times. Also, all donations for this performance will go to Cameron and Dynasty Typewriter as, once again, the fate of live stages and live performers are just as unsure as they were at the start of lockdown and need all the support they can get as the pandemic persists.

Cameron Esposito: Live From Home is set for Thurs. Jul. 30th at 6PM PT/9PM ET.

So, Venmo a donation to @cameronesposito and RSVP for the show here.

“Super Serious” Offers an Oral History of LA Indie Stand-Up Scene in a Gorgeous Coffee Table Book

It’s unclear as to exactly what was going on in 2010 in LA comedy, but it was the starting point of almost everything that makes it special now (well, right before COVID-19 struck anyway). The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail started around then, WTF with Marc Maron was picking up steam and kickstarted LA’s comedy podcast explosion, and even we had our humble beginnings around then. Also, so many indie comedy shows popped in and around LA giving the LA comedy scene the sort of connective tissue that it was missing years prior.

One such show is The Super Serious Show and, as they’ve kept their high flying variety show going for a decade between a handful of unique, wondrous venues around LA, they’ve seen the ebbs and flows, the new, the old, the highs, the shifts, the rumblings, the lows, and everything in between that has been going in the venerable indie LA comedy scene, especially when it comes to stand-up. Thus, Super Serious Show co-creator and portrait photographer Mandee Johnson assembled a lovely and exhaustive oral history of the comedy scene here in LA, accented by her signature polaroid portraiture of the hundreds and hundreds of performers that have stepped on The Super Serious Show stage. Contributors to this special oral history entitled Super Serious: An Oral History of Los Angeles Independent Stand-Up Comedy include Hasan Minhaj, Rory Scovel, Anthony Jeselnik, Karen Kilgariff, Baron Vaughn, Dave Anthony, Andy Kindler, Natalie Palamides, Kristen Schaal, Ron Funches, Reggie Watts, Rachel Bloom, Dana Gould, Eddie Pepitone, Cameron Esposito and dozens more.

If you’re as obsessive about comedy as we are, it’s definitely a must have for your coffee table (or whatever table you have). Super Serious: An Oral History of Los Angeles Independent Stand-Up Comedy is available for pre-order now and will be released on Aug. 18th from Andrews McMeel Publishing. Given how there are plenty of shipping delays for non-essential items these days in the U.S., best to put your order in now. Get more details and get your copy here.

Fun news alert: We have a BOOK!

Pick of the Day: Cameron Esposito 4/29

April 28, 2020
News
cameron esposito, comedy show, nori reed, stand up comedy

All the way back to the time when The Daily Show was being handed off from Jon Stewart, it was unclear who was going to be his successor. During that time, we firmly believed that, if she were up for it, Cameron Esposito would be a perfect person to take the Daily Show baton from Stewart. Esposito’s charm, warmth, poise, and keen, razor sharp observations is the perfect combo that we’d like to see on our screens on a nightly basis.

So, anytime there’s a chance to see her headline, we don’t think you should pass it up. Lucky for you, Cameron is doing her own headlining gig with her latest hour, Separately, via Zoom this Wed. Apr. 29th at 5PM PT/8PM ET. She’s taking donations for admission to the Zoom live-stream that will go to Cameron, Nori Reed (Cameron’s opener for the night), and the beloved Dynasty Typewriter at the Hayworth Theater. Get more details on the show/donations here.

Though it’s often not included in montages of LA, one of Los Angeles’ most beautiful structures is the pristine Union Station in DTLA. Its Art Deco design calls back to a timeless LA look from decades past, not to mention that it possessing all the charm of a classic train station.

So, wouldn’t it be great to watch comedy with LA’s most lovely train station as the backdrop?

Indeed, there will be a live comedy show next week, Clock Tower Comedy, featuring some of LA’s best in improv, musical comedy, and stand-up. Shamilton, the Hamilton-inspired musical improv show is absolutely one of the top musical comedy shows in LA and the one and only Cameron Esposito is bright, shining, genuine, sharp stand-up comedy luminary.

Esposito spoke so eloquently about her divorce and the LGBTQ perspective during her performance on Conan last night and cleverly highlighted just how new “gay divorce” is.

Cameron Esposito’s Wonderful New Hour “Rape Jokes” Is Now Streaming (and Available to Purchase in Support of RAINN)

June 12, 2018
Uncategorized

Cameron Esposito’s new hour Rape Jokes is so graceful in its craftsmanship and approach to the topics of sexual assault, feminism, gender, LGBTQ issues, and also, Catholicism, that it encapsulates, for us, a particularly special comment made about Esposito by Jay Leno years ago. (NOTE: we do note how weird it is to have the world “graceful” next to the phrase “rape jokes”, but Cameron’s comedy does indeed pull off graceful humor on such a controversial topic)

In 2013, Cameron made her network TV debut by performing on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Cameron was called to the couch, in the middle of her set, after getting a laugh from directly joking at the lead guest that night, Jay Leno. It was a fun riff session, which was capped off by Leno saying, “White men are on their way out. You’re the future,” and even added, “Lesbians rule!” You can read Cameron’s account of the whole event here.

Esposito’s undeniable warmth and sense of empathy make her so enthralling to watch and only adds to how funny, yet effective all her jokes and stories within Rape Jokes are. Even when she shares her story as a survivor of sexual assault, it’s a portion that is sobering, but, at the same time, empowering to the idea of victims of sexual assault, harassment, misconduct, etc. finally speaking their truth.

For us, the idea of her being “the future” rings so true from this hour. Luckily, you can see it for yourself as it’s currently streaming at: https://www.cameronesposito.com/

Esposito is releasing this special in support of RAINN, the United States’ largest anti-sexual violence organization. So, if you buy the special, the proceeds will go to RAINN.

For a comedy special, this is an incredibly quick turnaround.

So, it should go without saying that you need to mark June 11th on your calendars.

Pick Up Married Couple Cameron Esposito & Rhea Butcher’s Album “Back to Back”

Sure, plenty of comedians talk about being married. There will always be plenty of material to mine from matrimony.

However, very few, if any, actually do stand-up together and release it as an album. Even if both spouses are indeed comedians, the majority of the time, they’d want an entire hour to themselves.

Leave it to one of comedy’s most affable couples Cameron Esposito and Rhea Butcher to delve into pretty much uncharted territory. Together, they give a delightful look into their lives, between two people that happen to be wondrous, introspective stand-up comedians, as a happily married couple in 2017 via their album Back to Back.

Much like their live show/podcast Put Your Hands Together, they start off the hour together, then do separate sets, highlighting their individual comedy stylings and their playful back-and-forth as a duo on stage.

Don’t be surprised to see if this starts a trend of hours from married comedy couples.

You can get Back to Back now off of AST Records with buttons or shirts (or both) or off of iTunes.
