To keep in the Halloween spirit (and do a show safely while the pandemic still rages on), Drew Anderson and Julia Shiplett are putting together a very special, very exclusive live reading of their comedy pilot, SALEM.

You may not get to do trick-or-treating or endless party-hopping, but you can tune in what might be the perfect comedy thing for this Halloween season. They describe it as:

Mere days before Salem’s 10th Annual Harvest Festival, something strange happens that derails the big day and makes everyone start to question if there could be a witch among them. If you’ve ever wondered what THE CRUCIBLE meets THE OFFICE but very gay would be like, SALEM is your answer.

Supported by many of the very best comedy folks from all over the country including: Mary Beth Barone, Carmen Christopher, Drew Droege, Robby Hoffman, Molly Kearney, Langston Kerman, Marty Miller, Aparna Nancherla, Larry Owens, Rachel Sennott, Karolena Theresa, Sydnee Washington, and Ben Wasserman

Pick of the Day: Young Storytellers Presents The Biggest Show 10/27

Even though they won’t get the gorgeous space of a venue like the Theatre at the Ace Hotel, Young Storytellers will still put on their annual, pull-out-all-the-stops evening, The Biggest Show, that combines your favorite actors and comedy folks with the best stories written by students in their program in benefit of Young Storytellers’ upcoming programs.

This year, they will be doing The Biggest Show virtually with a cast that’s just as biggest and wonderful as any other year. That’ll include Jason Mantzoukas, Aparna Nancherla, Baron Vaughn, Judy Greer, Marcel Spears, Randall Park, and Tony Hale.

This virtual edition of The Biggest Show is set for Tues. Oct. 27th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets to the live-stream come with a donation of $10 or more. Get access and support the lovely program that is Young Storytellers here.

Pick of the Day: OHAYO! From Inside a Monster with Atsuko Okatsuka (Live-stream) 8/30

August 26, 2020
News
aparna nancherla, chelsea peretti, ever mainard, frankie quinones, rhea butcher, yassir lester

We were so excited to see a TV version of Let’s Go Atsuko: A Woke Japanese Game Show with Atsuko Okatsuka, but it would seem that COVID-19 has put that on hold like it has pretty much everything on this planet.

Fret not as Atsuko has been plenty busy in quarantine. She has kept Let’s Go Atsuko going in a podcast/web cast format AND she has started a new variety show OHAYO! that will have a live-stream debut this weekend via Dynasty Typewriter. It would be just enough to have Okatsuka to helm the show and have a fine round-up of variety acts, but Atsuko has taken it a fun-loving step further by having broadcasting and hosting the show while in the belly of a furry monster. That is the sort of absurdist break from reality we need while we’re are actually stuck in our houses from plenty of real monsters of viruses, systemic oppression, climate change, etc.

This first OHAYO! this Sun. Aug. 30th at 6PM PT/9PM ET will have a damn good line-up of Yassir Lester, Frankie Quinones, Aparna Nancherla, Frankie Quiñones, Chelsea Peretti, and Ever Mainard.

Tickets are only $5 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

Pick of the Day: Vintage Basement with Max & Nicky 7/21

July 16, 2020
News
aparna nancherla, fred armisen, max and nicky, reggie watts, vintage basement

Vintage Basement with Max and Nicky had kept their semi-retro, semi-absurdist comedy/music variety show going pretty regularly as a live-stream at the start of quarantine, but have taken a bit of a break lately.

However, they’re back for July and they’ve got a powerhouse line-up of Fred Armisen, Aparna Nancherla, and Reggie Watts (and more are TBA!). No matter who Max and Nicky Weinbach have on their show, it’s always a charming, refreshing, stylish and silly collection of bits and song.

This edition of Vintage Basement with Max & Nicky will also be presented by the beloved LA venue, Dynasty Typewriter & Y’All Got a Radio and 10% of ticket sales will be going to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

All you have to spend for one hell of a show and giving a little to the NAACP LDF is $5-$10. So, go get your tickets ASAP here.

Comedy Central’s Corporate Gets Final Trailer

News
aparna nancherla, comedy central, final season, jake weisman, matt ingebretson, trailer

Corporate, one of the best dark workplace comedies in the entire pantheon of workplace comedies is returning for its third and final season next week on Comedy Central. If there ever was a time for seeing the inner workings of corporations unapologetically skewered, it would be now. It would almost seem like that feeling has been around for awhile, but it’s certainly more prevalent than ever with corporations putting their employees lives on the line during a pandemic just so they can all go back to work in person.

So, enjoy this trailer for the third and final season from creators and stars Jake Weisman and Matt Ingebretson following the never-ending quest of Hampton DeVille to own and run everything they possibly get their hands on here.

The final season premiere is Wed. July 22nd on Comedy Central.

Pick of the Day: Self-Care with Jo and Aparna 5/21

May 13, 2020
News
aparna nancherla, jo firestone

Of the crucial things that we all need to do right now, one of them is self-care. Truly, do whatever you need to do to feel OK so long as it’s not hurting others or yourself.

Perhaps, one of those things is enjoying an entire self-care/wellness themed comedy show hosted by two comedians that, for our money, make us feel so at ease. You might be in luck as there is such a show coming up called Self-Care hosted by Jo Firestone and Aparna Nancherla. Jo and Aparna are taking this special evening to really dig in to the finer points and nuances of self-care. They’ll also be joined by a grand line-up of special guests, which, for this week is so, so stacked (they’ve got Guy Branum, Josh Sharp, Christin Chiello thus far).

For something that’s supposed to be a check-in show, Aparna and Jo have plenty up their sleeve it would seem. Proceeds from Self Care with Jo and Aparna go to the staff of The Bell House where this show would have been sans pandemic.

Tickets start at $5 and you very much should tickets for the game ASAP. Buy at ticket right now.

This very riveting documentary short Laughing Matters: The Funny Business of Being Sad from SoulPancake, Funny or Die, director Mike Bernstein, and producer/editor Georgia Koch shows how depression has woven its way through the lives of many of your favorite comedic writers, actors, and stand-ups and how they’ve managed to cope.

Included in the doc are harrowing stories of such celebrated funny people Chris Gethard, Sarah Silverman, Rachel Bloom, Baron Vaughn, Neal Brennan, Aparna Nancherla, Rainn Wilson, Sara Benincasa, Riki Lindhome, Wayne Brady, and Anna Akana.

It is indeed #WorldMentalHealthDay and it’s especially worth watching today, but how Laughing Matters effectively navigates the thread of everyone journey with depression, anxiety, and more in this doc is pretty amazing and worth a watch at any time. It’s yet another reminder of how prolific issues with mental health are and why it’s important to take care of it and to know that you’re not alone in how you feel (even though it might feel that way)

You can (and should) watch it here.

So, enjoy a bit of that with her set from last night’s Colbert.

Imagine Office Space as reimagined by David Fincher in a TV series and you might start getting on the level of the deliciously dark workplace comedy that is Jake Weisman, Matt Ingebretson, and Pat Bishop’s Corporate.

See for yourself in this trailer.

Then, after you’re of course hooked, you can treat yourself to watching four episodes that are now streaming for your convenience at CC.com here with cable subscription.

After all of that, mark down Wednesday, January 17th for the series premiere because, we’re guessing that, like us, you’ll want way more Corporate (just in the fictional TV sense anyway).

Rest assured, the talent is clearly stacked here with Aparna, Kinane, Feinstein, Morin, Yashere, and List and you ought to go to the tapings happening on Sunday, November 5th and Monday, November 6th at Globe Theater in DTLA (RSVP for free tickets here).

Trump has let the states decide whether they want to defund Planned Parenthood or not. So, now, so many people are stepping up to have the back of Planned Parenthood.

So, to support the cause, a special collector’s box set of vinyl records featuring the comedy of Sarah Silverman, Aparna Nancherla, Jenny Slate, Margaret Cho, Tig Notaro, Janeane Garofalo, Pete Holmes, and Zach Galifianakis in addition to music from some of the musicians around like St. Vincent, Sleater-Kinney, Björk, Matt Berninger, Elliott Smith, Sharon Van Etten, Mitski, Feist, and Chvrches will be released soon. All of the comedy comes from Largo’s archives by the way.

Also, we like that the folks behind this project made this note:

Do we know there’s a joke in the name? We do. We hope the title evokes the rich history of 7-inch vinyl records as a medium for protest music and resistance.

Pre-sale date has yet to be announced, but you can get more info here.
