Pick of the Day: Cameron Esposito: Home for the All-The-Days Thanksgiving Special Edition 11/25

November 13, 2020
News
cameron esposito, dynasty typewriter, thanksgiving

Well, it looks as though Thanksgiving is going to be have to done, like almost everything else this year, remotely, if at all. Continuing to be in quarantine/lockdown, it’s very likely that you won’t be able to dig into turkey and fixings with your family or friends like you would in the before times.

Yet, there’s still hope for some Thanksgiving week as Cameron Esposito will be a Thanksgiving Dad to us all with a very special virtual stand-up show with some TBA special guests, presented by Dynasty Typewriter. Esposito’s candor and warmth are the perfect recipe to bring feelings of joy, mirth, and togetherness at a time when those are in short supply.

Cameron Esposito’s Home for the All-The-Days: Thanksgiving Edition is set to stream on Wed. Nov. 25th at 5:30PM PT/8:30PM ET. Tickets are only $10. Go make this Thanksgiving just a little better and get tickets here.

If You Still Need an Absurdist Break from Reality, Enjoy Aunty Donna’s “Everything’s a Drum” (and Their “Big Ol’ House of Fun” Sketch Show)

November 12, 2020
News
absurdist comedy, aunty donna, broden kelly, mark bonanno, netflix, sam lingham, sketch comedy, zachary ruane

Though we all knew that Trump would deny that he lost and seemingly refuse to leave The White House if that were the case, the horrifically taut tension of 2020 is still very much straining the entire world.

So, we’d like to suggest a nice little break for some self-care in the form of the peak absurdist musical/sketch comedy of the fantastic Australian sketch group Aunty Donna comprised of Mark Bonanno, Broden Kelly, Zachary Ruane, and Sam Lingham. Specifically, this song “Everything’s a Drum” offers up one of the more sensationally ridiculous sketches we’ve seen in some time.

If you dig that, you might want to hop on over to Netflix to catch their entire six episode run of Aunty Donna’s Big Ol House of Fun that just started streaming this week. Just like they’ve done in any of their internationally touring live stage shows in the past, Aunty Donna is pretty fearless in how silly and daft they go and really reap the rewards for doing so.

Also, Ed Helms is actually is on camera in the show as an EP if you need more convincing for some reason to go binge it right now.

Netflix Enlists David Spade, Fortune Feimster, and London Hughes for “Netflix After Party”, an After-Show for All of Netflix

November 12, 2020
News

(via Deadline)

For the last several years, Netflix has aimed to show its dominance over traditional TV networks by often doing things on a much larger scale than any broadcast or cable network could or would. The announcement of Netflix After Party is definitely such a move as Netflix is setting the table to have a companion after-show for not just a single show, but rather the entire streaming service.

Also, the streaming behemoth will be employing comedians, specifically David Spade, Fortune Feimster, and London Hughes (this is pretty much her intro to the U.S. hailing from the U.K.) as hosts that will riff on the boat loads of content that Netflix releases every single week across the globe. We have no doubt that other comedians as well as the typical collection of cast members, writers, etc. will be guests on the show to dish about whatever’s most popular on Netflix (i.e. it’d be The Queen’s Gambit if the show were on right now).

It has been a minute since a full-fledged after-show was introduced (minus that comedians-making-fun-of-House Hunters series that got produced at the beginning of quarantine). There have been plenty of companion podcasts as producing audio remotely is plenty safe and so much easier to pull off than an entire TV series production. However, The Netflix After Party is set to get going in 2021 when, maybe, perhaps, there might just be a vaccine and it might be an easier series to produce.

With Biden in office by that point, we’re intrigued to see if people will be more game to see comedians to make fun of TV and movies as the election, pandemic, and the cultural uprising has dominated the zeitgeist for most of 2020.

Pick of the Day: The Dollop Live Show 11/19

November 12, 2020
News
dave anthony, gareth reynolds, live podcast, the dollop

The Dollop with Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds remains one of the best podcasts that points out some of the most egregiously overlooked bits of American History. Often, Dave and Gareth point out, while hilariously riffing of course, how we all got here and that there has indeed been precedent for the current chaos that reigns over us (even as Trump’s presidency is hopefully devolving into some sort of death rattle before getting kicked out of office).

They’ll be doing another special live virtual episode of The Dollop next week on Thurs. Nov. 19th at 6PM PT/9PM ET via Looped Live and yes, there will be a VIP Meet-and-Greet too for $75. If you just want access to the live-stream, it’ll only run you $20. In any case, you really ought to get your tickets soon right here.

Please Enjoy This Great Short “Two Pan Dan” From Sergio Cilli with Rory Scovel and Drew Tarver

News

Even in the midst of everything that’s going on right now, there are people who still don’t want to admit that they’re having problems or maybe that they’re truly wrong about something.

This marvelous short film, Two Pan Dan, from writer/director Sergio Cilli shows how absolutely ridiculous that can be even when it comes to as simple as delivering a belated wedding gift. Rory Scovel and Drew Tarver continue to shine as they have in Robbie or The Other Two as close friends, supposedly.

There is a deftness in the writing and performance in this short that had us laughing in a way that has been so incredibly rare in quarantine. So, we highly urge you to take ten minutes to enjoy Cilli’s latest here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 33: Chad Damiani & Clowning/Idiot in a Pandemic

November 11, 2020
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report

Before COVID-19 took hold, a new form of “clowning” that was so much more rebellious and absurd than most other live comedy, or even any clowning you likely would have seen in the past, had really started to take hold in Los Angeles. Through the last few years, such inspired, spirited, and ingenious performers like Chad Damiani were instrumental into not only pushing the boundaries of what you could do with blending characters, improv, physical comedy, etc. on a live stage, but pushing the boundaries of what you could do with live comedy as a whole. Chad dives into the whole world of clowning/idiot, with TCB’s Jake Kroeger, as it was in 2019 going into 2020 and what the clowning/idiot community has had to do to adapt to the pandemic (a growing number of outdoor shows in parks). Also, some quick “hot” takes on Adult Swim Festival’s full virtual line-up and Sacha Baron Cohen setting his sights for Mark Zuckerberg.

Pick of the Day: Virtual Q&A with John Mulaney 11/17

November 11, 2020
News
daniel pearl music day, john mulaney, q and a

Normally, Daniel Pearl Music Days are “an international network of concerts that use the power of music to reaffirm our commitment to tolerance and humanity,” but they’re expanding that just a bit to include an exclusive virtual evening of chit chatting with the one and only John Mulaney.

It’ll be the 14th Annual Daniel Pearl Music Day and Mulaney, fresh off from hosting SNL once more, will be virtually appearing for an exclusive Q&A for this festival and you just might have chance to get your long-standing queries about him and his comedy and answered. Also, Mulaney is usually one of the best sort of late night guests, with stories at the ready, but also game for something strange happening in the moment and seeing where it goes, which very well could happen on this evening.

This Virtual Q&A with John Mulaney is set for Tue. Nov. 17th at 5PM PT/8PM ET and tickets are $5-$10. Go get them here before they sell out!

Here’s Your First Look at Colin Quinn’s Drive-In Showcase Special “Colin Quinn & Friends: A Parking Lot Comedy Show”

November 10, 2020
News

As drive-in shows were one of the first and only things that were afforded to live comedy in the pandemic, it was inevitable that there would be comedy specials produced from it. So much overhead goes into producing a drive-in show anyway that it only stands to reason that they would shoot the performance and try to do something with it.

Indeed, drive-in stand-up comedy specials are coming. Comedy Dynamics has a handful of them and then there’s Colin Quinn’s showcase of his favorite comics performing at a drive-in in Brooklyn. It’s aptly named Colin Quinn & Friends: A Parking Lot Comedy Show, perhaps highlighting how far live comedy has had to adapt in order to get some sense of normalcy (i.e. not doing stand-up on Zoom).

Today, Quinn released a trailer and gave us all the first look of Colin Quinn & Friends: A Parking Lot Comedy Show that will feature performances from Sam Jay, Marina Franklin, Dan Soder, Bonnie McFarlane, Chris DiStefano, Rich Vos, Robert Kelly, and, of course Colin Quinn himself.

If you haven’t been to a drive-in stand-up show (they are pretty expensive), you’ll get a taste of the history that has been made this year of comedians, very likely for the first time ever in history, performing to people in their cars who resort to honking and flashing their headlights to, hopefully, show appreciation for a bit.

Colin Quinn & Friends: A Parking Lot Comedy Show premieres on HBO Max this Thursday, Nov. 12th.

Can’t believe I accidentally leaked this trailer. “Colin Quinn & Friends: A Parking Lot Comedy Show” premiering this Thursday only on @hbomax pic.twitter.com/qEzNpQbv5k

This Friday, Nov. 13th, Helltrap Nightmare is partnering with LA local orgs NOLYMPICS and LA Tenants Union to support the Food Not Rent fund for their latest show. Sacha Baron Cohen Tweets Pic of Trump and Mark Zuckerberg, Says “One Down. One to Go”

November 9, 2020
News
borat, mark zuckerberg, sacha baron cohen, trump

With the release of Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm in the thick of this year’s General Election, Sacha Baron Cohen stirred up the sort of controversy that he has made an entire career out of and specifically targeted the Trump administration. Specifically, Cohen dressed up in a Trump costume while in character in Borat to interrupt a Mike Pence appearance in order to present his fictional daughter, Tutar, to Pence as a gift. Even more notably, Cohen duped current Trump legal counsel Rudy Giuliani into a similar situation.

Now that Trump has lost to Biden over the past weekend, Cohen has indeed tweeted, “One down. One to go.” with a picture of Trump shaking hands with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Supposedly, one facet of comedy is indeed speaking truth to power and, within that, ridiculing those whole abusively wield power. No matter how hard hitting a joke (or even just a line in a joke) might be, it’s hard to truly see what the effect might be. There are plenty of very, very shrewd political jokes that, ultimately, only preached to the choir and an aside during a set by Hannibal Buress led to an accelerated downfall of Bill Cosby. Then again, the words of George Carlin still ring very loud and very true as a wake-up call, even in 2020.

It’s curious to ponder if Cohen showing the ridiculous incompetence, ignorance, and prejudice of Trump cronies (and, by proxy, Trump himself) has affected anything. Four years of Donald Trump as POTUS has given more than enough proof of this. Really, his first 100 days should have been enough proof to show how bad his Administration was and would ultimately end up being. It’ll be great to see Cohen dupe Zuckerberg especially since he has him, as of this tweet, in his crosshairs, but how that will bring about the downfall of Zuckerberg/Facebook is a mystery at this point.

There is no doubting that Cohen is mastered in the art of satirical comedic performance and that showing ridiculous bigots to be ridiculous bigots can be very satisfying. We want to hope that whatever he has planned will actually dismantle the social media giant and other like them. If Cohen actually pulls that off, that definitely would cement his legacy in the art form of comedy and The Kennedy Center should automatically give Sacha the Mark Twain Prize for Humor.

The COVID-19 pandemic is still going on, so something like a big comedy and music festival is still going to be virtual. Yet, Adult Swim has tapped their resources and connections for what should be a pretty spectacular virtual shindig. Also, they’ve been live-streaming for quite some time, well before COVID hit, so don’t be surprised if they have a few tricks up their sleeves.

Today, they just announced their full line-up, which includes live-streams from Rick and Morty, The Eric Andre Show, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Tuca & Bertie and live-chat watch-alongs of Space Ghost: Coast 2 Coast, Three Busy Debras, Metalocalypse, and, as you can see above, so much more.

If You Haven’t Already, Get Into “How To With John Wilson” To Help Get Through Right Now

November 5, 2020
News
how to with john wilson

Though we all were thoroughly warned about the election results taking much longer than normal, the actual experience of waiting is interminable, especially with everything that’s at stake. Coupled with the continuing having to quarantine/sheltering-at-home, the collective anxiety/tension is at an all time high.

To get through this particularly nightmarish time until the election results are finally tallied up (and after as well), How To With John Wilson might be the perfect thing to bring some peace and calm as well as one of the funniest new series that you can watch/stream.

The titular John Wilson explores very niche, very offbeat topics and “how to” do them. Wilson rarely appears on camera and instead focuses on narration and capturing multitudes of intimate moments that accentuate the quiet and charming absurdities of everyday life (well before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold of course). Thus far, Wilson has dissected how to make small talk and put up scaffolding, but goes further in exploring the human condition often oscillating between real life ironic moments and genuine connection with any one of the numerous strangers that he chats up.

The result of Wilson’s DIY docu-series is something so warm and inviting in all of its glimpses of humanity (well, mostly humanity in NYC) that captures the strangeness and humor of the most overlooked everyday minutia. It should come as no surprise that Nathan Fielder serves as an Executive Producer since How To with John Wilson has tinges of Nathan For You accentuating the feel of Joe Pera Talks With You. As far as new TV comedy series go, it’s the comfiest of comfort food (though we have absolutely have to note that the show does has substance and a unique soul) and, as of this post, the two current episodes available to stream at HBO Max will get you through an hour of this week/near future. There will be four more episodes coming to get you through the rest of 2020, FYI.

Pick of the Day: Wild Horses with Special Guest Kate Moennig 12/5

News
erin whitehead, improv comedy, kate moennig, lauren lapkus, mary holland, stephanie allynne, wild horses

The ballots are still being counted and no matter who wins, Thanksgiving is very likely going to still be a turkey-scented nightmare this year (maybe more so than in 2016?). Overall, November is going to be a hell of a month to get through in an already hellish 2020.

That being said, at the top of December, a very special performance of Wild Horses, one of the best improv groups in existence thanks to its brilliant, inspiring, clever, honest, and hilarious members Lauren Lapkus, Stephanie Allynne, Mary Holland, and Erin Whitehead, awaits us all. Wild Horses will be doing an exclusive live-stream show via Dynasty Typewriter that will feature very special guest, Kate Moennig (The L Word) on Sat. Dec. 5th at 5PM PT/8PM ET.

Tickets are $5-$10 and you ought to go snag some in case they sell out (Wild Horses routinely sold out all their performances in the before times, FYI). Do so here.

Trump Claims Early Victory (in Beating Pokemon) Thanks to James Austin Johnson

Once again, James Austin Johnson delivers an elegant, yet almost effortless (seemingly made during a road trip) offering of his Trump impression, made special for Trump post-Election Day as he whines about winning before all the votes are counted.

Here, James imbues his deep knowledge of the world of Pokemon through Trump-speak for DJT to claim a false early victory in the world of Pokemon (the early Blue and Red versions that is).

We can only hope that going forward from today that JAJ will make these videos with a decisive Trump loss and diving into further video game lore at the same time.

“Entre Nos: LA Meets NY” Has Chris Estrada and Ian Lara Co-Headlining a Comedy Special

News

It would have seemed that stand-up comedy specials from the before times have been exhausted as Netflix and HBO haven’t released a comedy special with a live audience in quite some time. Yet, there’s still a bit of that good ol’ comedy before the pandemic took hold that’s left to see.

HBO Latino is set to release a brand new co-headlined special with LA’s Chris Estrada and NY’s Ian Lara for a bi-coastal comedy special, Entre Nos | LA Meets NY: Chris Estrada and Ian Lara. Either of them could carry their own special (Estrada has been a personal favorite of ours around the LA scene for years), but we’re glad to see that they’ll have an HBO credit to their name.

Get a taste of this latest Entre Nos special with this trailer and then look for it to premiere on HBO Latino on Fri. Nov. 13th at 9:30PM ET/PT and then also streaming on HBO Max.

If you need an oh so tiny break from the world, especially this election, COVID-19, climate change, the global reckoning with systemic oppression, might we suggest one of the wonderfully, ridiculously silly (and metal) things we’ve seen in awhile.

Half-death metal, half-tender love song, self-styled darkest lords of the darkest darkness that the darkness ever covered in darkness, Witch Taint (AKA “the most extremely extreme and Satanic Norwegian Black Metal band from Indiana”) have just released their latest single “Ready 4 Lvv” from their full length album Sons of Midwestern Darkness. It’s the perfect bleak interjection into a love song that only black metal masters like Witch Taint could dish out.

There is an accompanying music video for Ready 4 Lvv that further accentuates the romance/gloom here. We had a pretty big smile and laugh, the hardcore kind of course, while giving it a watch.

Oh, if you don’t know about Witch Taint, please familiarize yourself with the amazing and hilarious Black Metal Dialogues.

In general, therapy is something that so should be in, but these times make the emotional/mental support that therapy provides is more crucial than ever.

Luckily, one of the best animated therapists around, Dr. Katz of Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist, is doing a very special virtual show this month to see some of his more high profile clients including Jon Hamm, Oscar Nunez, Bob Saget, Susie Essman, Andy Kindler, and Paul F. Tompkins.

With the results of tomorrow’s election not being able to be confidently announced for awhile, a comedy therapy session is something to look forward to maybe, perhaps calm yourself, even just a bit.

Also, Laura Silverman will be reprising her role as Dr. Katz’s receptionist, FYI.

Dr. Katz Live will be presented by RushTix on Sun. Nov. 15th and tickets are going for $20. Go get them here, before they sell out.
