Craig Ferguson Dons His Most Casual Look for New Special “Tickle Fight”

November 27, 2017

Former Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson has spent a good deal of his career on a television in a finely tailored suit.

Now, since it has been years since he left that gig, Craig can really ease into a look all his own with an unbuttoned short sleeve shirt and Chuck Taylors for his new hour special coming to Netflix, Tickle Fight. Also, you can see that he’s quite a fan of tattoos as well, which might leave you wondering what sort of guy used to host The Late Late Show (for our money he was one of the best interviewers in late night)

See for yourself in this trailer.

Tickle Fight begins streaming on Tuesday, December 5th on Netflix.

We’re serious when we say that you should go to both our Mandatory Holiday Office Party at The Echoplex 12/12 and Water Cooler Talk at The Love Song Bar 12/5.

Martin McDonagh Offers Up Another Serving of the Darkest Comedy He Can Cook Up with “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

November 27, 2017
Uncategorized

Admittedly, we went into watching this movie wanting to already like it. It’s not objective, but humans still work here at TCB and we happen to be big fans of Martin McDonagh. If you follow us closely, you know that we have a penchant for very dark comedy, which part of the reason we were looking forward to seeing Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri.

As we suspected might happen, we laughed heartily throughout watching it this Thanksgiving weekend.

Between In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, and the latest, Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri, writer/director/playwright Martin McDonagh has his dark comedy formula figured out with his favorite players including Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Peter Dinklage, etc. There’s a sense of a morality tale on the surface, but there’s often no nicely packaged moral to be had at all and all the characters involved lose in some fashion. In a It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia sort of way, we really enjoy that dynamic, which runs throughout Three Billboards.

There’s a bit of “deus ex machina” in setting up the big comedic and uber-dark set pieces, but, we guess, that’s where our expectations overlooked a few janky plot devices.

With so much anger and vitriol that’s present in everyday life now, seeing hate play out with no clear winners (as an integral part of the human experience is being flawed in some way) was oddly calming, which was what we really needed for Thanksgiving.

Even if you had a Thanksgiving dinner where you faked your way through being “thankful” and stayed quietly, passive aggressive near family members you can’t stand, you can actually be thankful for the Thanksgiving surprise of the revived Mystery Science Theater 3000 getting another season over at Netflix.

That’s especially amazing because, if you remember, this all started from just a Kickstarter campaign.

Lady Bird Is Definitely The Best Coming of Age Comedy This Year (and Is Expanding Nationwide This Weekend)

It’s nice to see that a year that had horror do so well (Get Out, It, Trump), that something so sweet, tender, honest, and so, so, so damn funny can find its way into your local multiplex this Thanksgiving weekend.

Apparently, we’ve all still got a bit of humanity left in us and Greta Gerwig, in her writer-director debut, not only knows how to coax it out, but also make you enjoy getting teary-eyed while doing so.

The whole cast makes the movie feel so real, as if you almost know all of them or facsimile thereof, whether you grew up in turn-of-the-millennium Sacramento, CA or not.

If it wasn’t clear already, go see it whenever and wherever you can.

Also, being a fan of Saoirse Ronan, we enjoyed imagining that her character in Atonement grew up to be Lady Bird.

We Acknowledge That It’s Thanksgiving 2018 Today.

It’s a national holiday, which leaves us with little to do here at the offices of The Comedy Bureau (though we are still here for some reason).

(also we’re thankful to all of you that support us so we can support you and, as a whole, make comedy in LA and beyond better)

In any case, join us in our new annual tradition of hearing about the not so nice 2nd Thanksgiving from Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds on The Dollop.

Then, for a dessert/palate cleanser, enjoy a new, sweet trip down memory lane with Rick & Morty’s Mr. Poopybutthole.

May your Thanksgiving be tolerable.

In case you haven’t noticed in LA, there has been a lot of comics doing more extended sets for various submissions to networks or streaming services (or maybe just do an extended set because stage time is a precious commodity out here). That means a lot of our favorite comics in LA that don’t normally get to do a half hour or more are also doing a half-hour or even a hour coming up.

This includes:

Robert Buscemi taping an hour @ Lyric Hyperion Fri., Nov. 24 9PM FREE w/RSVP
Half hours from Dan Telfer, Brandie Posey, Lisa Curry, and Kyle Clark @ The Clubhouse 9PM Sat. Nov. 25 FREE
Half hours from April Richardson & Eliza Skinner @ UCB Franklin Sun. Nov. 26th 11PM $5
Half hours from Simon Gibson & MK Paulsen @ The Clubhouse Wed. Nov. 29th 8PM FREE
An extended set from Joe Kwaczala @ Nerdmelt Showroom Thurs. Dec. 7th 9PM $8 in adv., $10 at door

Go to all of these please. Links for more details and tickets above.

Jake Weisman, Pat Bishop, and Matt Ingebretson Dark Workplace Comedy “Corporate” Will Finally Premiere in January 2018

Our excitement for this show has sustained for several months now as Pat Bishop, Matt Ingebretson, and Jake Weisman’s slick, yet dark sense of humor is right up our alley.

Just look at Weisman obsession with taking pictures with knives, even when he’s announcing the premiere date of his show.

In any case, mark down Wednesday, January 17th, 2018 as the series premiere date for Corporate.

Through thorough surveillance of our own employees at The Comedy Bureau, we have found that talking at a water cooler during your break is one of the best parts of people’s day.

So, we’re trying desperately to copy that “vibe” and bring it to you in a night of comedy with our personal favorites that we’ve had our eyes on for years.

With assistance from Deep Eddy Vodka and DoLA, we will present comedic performances from  Laurie Kilmartin, Joe DeRosa, Michael Rayner, David Gborie for “Water Cooler Talk” to be hosted by TCB’s own Jake Kroeger.

Cool (and hungry) people should arrive early for free pizza from Prufrock Pizzeria between 7PM and 8PM while supplies last!

Water Cooler Talk will commence at The Love Song Bar on Tuesday, December 5th with doors open (and, again, free gourmet pizza) at 7PM and the show starting promptly at 8PM.

Cards Against Humanity Is Trolling Trump by Buying Land Where His Proposed Border Will Go Up

From cardsagainsthumanitysavesamerica.com:

Donald Trump is a preposterous golem who is afraid of Mexicans. He is so afraid that he wants to build a twenty-billion dollar wall that everyone knows will accomplish nothing. So we’ve purchased a plot of vacant land on the border and retained a law firm specializing in eminent domain to make it as time-consuming and expensive as possible for the wall to get built.

The money comes from their latest holiday “surprise mailers” campaign, which quickly sold out.

We can only imagine (and hope) that Cards Against Humanity will be doing more stunts like this under the Trump Administration.

Fox Might Be Finally Stepping Back Into the Late Night Ring with a New Show from Neal Brennan

Thanks to the Internet, late night is now more of a genre than it is a time slot. As such, the genre that gets dibs on making fun of what’s going on in the world first has become very popular, especially thanks to 12 hours news cycle and a psychopath in the White House.

For many years now, Fox has had no entry in the late night world like Kimmel or The Daily Show. They might joining with the times by developing a potential weekly late night show with Neal Brennan, stand-up, writer, and famed co-creator of Chappelle’s Show.

Preliminary details point towards a sort of Last Week Tonight/Full Frontal sort of format, but, we hope, within that format, Brennan might take a cue from his own Three Mics special to break down the week’s events in one-liners, bits, and truths.

Also, Bill Hader and Fred Armisen did this special edition of Documentary Now! just for Dave.

This Week’s Jackie and Laurie Show Is Required Listening for How They Detail Dealing with Sexual Harassment as Female Comics

The Jackie and Laurie Show, co-hosted by Jackie Kashian and Laurie Kilmartin, offers a wonderful and insightful look into the lives of two successful, undeniably hilarious female comedians that have been in the business for quite some time now.

As such, they provide an important, unfiltered perspective on the sexual abuse, harassment, misbehavior, etc. that they’ve held to deal with in their comedy careers as well as how the tides are now changing from all sides. You’ve probably read a few articles on the fall of Louis CK changing everything already, but please take some time to hear their stories.

Also, it’s one of our favorite podcasts and you should already be listening to it anyway.
