Adult Swim Orders Another Mr. Neighbor’s House Special

Adult Swim Orders Another Mr. Neighbor’s House Special

If ever there were a darkest-timeline-doppelganger to a Mr. Rogers type, it’d be Brian Huskey as Mr. Neighbor.

We loved the original Mr. Neighbor’s House special by Huskey, Jason Mantzoukas, and Jesse Falcon that was released two years ago on Adult Swim. We’re sure that Huskey and company will up the ante, but, given the times that we live in, we’re sure it’ll seem slightly less otherworldly than when the first special came out.

In any case, we’ll be looking forward to Mr Neighbor’s next uber-trippy adventure set to premiere on June 24th on Adult Swim.

For a comedy special, this is an incredibly quick turnaround.

However, we have a feeling that this special is one that needs to be watched by any and all ASAP on top of funding an important cause as quickly as it can.

So, it should go without saying that you need to mark June 11th on your calendars.

Watch Trailer for Dark Icelandic Comedy “Under The Tree”

The land that produced Björk and “necropants” ought to have a minimalist, dark sense of humor.

Certainly, that’s what we’re getting from the trailer of Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson’s Under The Tree, which follows the bitter, bitter dispute between neighbors and one single tree.

See for yourself in this trailer.

If you’re into it, look for Under The Tree in theaters in limited release on July 6th.

The idea of showing comedians in therapy gets taken to the next level with Please Understand Me from the brilliant duo of Ahamed Weinberg and Steven Feinartz.

In this web series, fictional stories are made up for pairs of comedians who sit down with actual therapists, accented with colorful interstitial flashbacks. Of course, the stories themselves are perfectly ridiculous and played to perfection by a great cast, which includes many of our favorite comedy folks such as Rory Scovel, Natalie Palamides, Mo Collins, Fred Melamed, Steph Tolev, Ismael Loutfi, Ahamed, Juzo Yoshida, Chad Damiani, Phil Burgers, and Punkie Johnson.

Go enjoy Please Understand Me’s first two episodes right now on Facebook Watch and check back weekly for new episodes.

Amy Schumer Signs Deal To Do Her Own Podcast on Spotify for $1 Million

Amy Schumer Signs Deal To Do Her Own Podcast on Spotify for $1 Million

High profile names doing podcasts continue to be a rising tide for the future of podcasts. If you want to think about the value of podcasts at the current moment, a seven-figure deal for talent is comparable to similar deals made routinely for TV, movies, and music.

Schumer will be doing a podcast that covers her takes on the world in regards to pop culture, politics, and stand up comedy. That could easily be the basis for a topical weekly show that Schumer could have hosted, but doing it in podcast form is much less production intensive and allows Schumer time to do plenty of other projects.

We think that this might be a tipping point for those on the fence about listening to podcasts.

Steve Martin and Martin Short’s An Evening You Will Forget For the Rest of Your Life Makes Busting Balls a Classy Affair

For an hour special of Steve Martin and Martin Short together, you’d expect roast jokes of celebrities, splashes of absurdity, Jiminy Glick, an air of distinction (only to be undercut by something abject silliness), musical numbers, and, of course, bluegrass.

An Evening You Will Forget For The Rest of Your Life, the comedy special from Martin and Short now streaming on Netflix delivers on those expectations, but also highlights the friendship between the two comedy titans. Busting chops, balls, etc. between comedians has been a long held practice and form of bonding and here, in this special, Steve and Martin do the snazziest version of that. In fact, the opening of the special is purely them taking turns explicitly throwing shade at each other tit-for-tat.

As far as we can recall, this might be one of the classiest showcases of one-upsmanship in comedy and a great reminder of why Steve Martin and Martin Short have been held in such high esteem for decades.

You can see it all for yourself as An Evening You Will Forget For The Rest of Your Life is now streaming on Netflix.

Roseanne Cancelled by ABC Following Roseanne Barr’s Racist Tweet Against Former Obama Aide Valerie Jarrett

Well, that was fast.

Despite the revival of Roseanne posting up pleasing numbers for ABC, a racist “joke” tweeted out about Valerie Jarrett, a presidential advisor under Barack Obama, has prompted ABC to cancel their promising reboot of the series.

The incendiary, grotesque tweet, now deleted, reads as follows, “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj” (vj being the initials of Valerie Jarett). Barr quickly apologized for the tweet after all hell broke loose on the Internet and announced she was leaving Twitter, but that wasn’t enough mea culpa for ABC’s taste.

This has to be the swiftest cancellation of a series (this all happened today) in recent memory, especially one that comes from the fallout of one tweet. Such action might just set a new standard and precedent that networks and studios might follow going forward regarding the behavior of their talent, no matter how big or successful.

Free speech, especially as used by comedians on social media, will be a curious case in the immediate future.

Defamation, which there might be an argument for here, is indeed not protected by the First Amendment, but you might want to read up on the legal definition of defamation before you form your opinion on the situation.

Well, NYC’s renowned Las Culturistas podcast, hosted by Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang,  is finally coming to LA to do a round of their beloved I Don’t Think So, Honey! next month.

For the uninitiated, 50 comedians (you can see above that they’ve assembled many of LA’s best) will get to fiercely rant for one minute on anything in culture kicked off by the eponymous phrase “I don’t think so honey”. Arguably, it raises sh*t-talking to an art form. Do yourself a favor and listen to the live episodes that they’ve done in the NYC in the Las Culturistas archives.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. We highly recommend to go get them here ASAP.

That’s pretty much all we need to be on board for this movie that was sold to Netflix and has Will Ferrell attached. Apparently, that’s all that everyone involved needed to hop on board as well.

Here’s Tig explaining what might be one of the easiest and well received movie pitches of all time on Conan.

From the minds of Andrew Michaan and Zed Cutsinger comes a full length pilot for Ghost Family, a show we wish would get picked up to series somewhere (though some NSFW content in it probably means it’s better suited for certain networks or streaming services than others).

In the way Childrens Hospital took on medical procedurals, Ghost Family goes to the nth degree and beyond to send up family sitcoms and we loved ridiculous minute of it.

Watch and enjoy it here (and maybe spread the word enough so it does become an actual TV show somewhere).

Ahmed Bharoocha Tells One of the Best Jokes Ever on Religion on Colbert

May 25, 2018
Uncategorized

Even more than joking about politics, joking about religion can be even more divisive. People’s faith often guides the rest of their other beliefs and is a personal foundation that doesn’t much appreciate being shaken of poked.

That being said, the idea of a sacred cow, especially the sacred cow, makes making jokes about it even more alluring to comedians. Many have tried, but usually end up with a joke that only one side agrees with on top of usually deriding the entire concept of religion. That’s not to say that they aren’t great jokes, but they do require an open mind that many often don’t have. One of the all time great jokes in the canon of comedy by Emo Philips fits this description.

Ahmed Bharoocha performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and opened up with a joke that not only acts a defense of faith and religion, but does so in such a simply beautiful way that’s mostly inclusive of all religions. For our money, it’s a joke that will stand the test of the time.

Do watch Ahmed’s whole set, by the way, as his performance was stellar through and through.

One of the perpetual mysteries of the entertainment business from the creatives/entertainers/talents’ side is how to get decent representation.

So many factors involve an agency or management company taking you on as a client and two of them are how marketable you are and, unfortunately, how lucky you are.

From the minds of Megan Koester and Steven Feinartz, comes a darkly comedic tale of how attempting to get an agent goes horribly awry with NYTVF selection, Unmarketable.

Watch and enjoy it here.

Also, props to LA born-and-bred Eric Dadourian giving Ari from Entourage a run for his money.

Baskets Renewed for 4th Season at FX

“We’re not clowning around, Baskets just got approved for a 4th season. Time to celebrate! #BasketsFX“

-@basketsfx

While sitcoms are being axed left, right, and all around at the big broadcast networks, FX recognizes that their comedy programming (which also includes Atlanta and Better Things) is pretty damn strong and are staying the course.

Oh, this would be a great time to remind you to get into Baskets if you, perchance, haven’t dipped your toe in yet.

And Here’s the First Sketch from “The Break with Michelle Wolf”

The premiere of The Break with Michelle Wolf is only a few days away, which is, we should again note, is less than a month after her performance at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Needless to say, we’re highly anticipating what Wolf and company have up their sleeves.

So, with this first sketch that just got posted, they poke fun at shoe-horning female lead characters into clearly-written-for-male leads without changing much (this parody trailer bares a satirical resemblance to the actual movie Equity). It sets a tone that has always been Wolf’s brand of comedy, equal parts biting and silly. It looks like Sundays will now have a double dose of satirical comedy from John Oliver and Wolf.

Also, in watching this, we had a good laugh thinking of Wolf as the “strong female lead” of her own show on Netflix.

The Break with Michelle Wolf begins streaming on Sundays starting May 27th on Netflix.

W. Kamau Bell’s First Netflix Special “Private School Negro” Coming Next Month

W. Kamau Bell has certainly been busy since his last recorded hour of stand-up (Semi-Prominent Negro, released in 2016) with his CNN series, United Shades of America, which just happened to have won an Emmy during its tenure thus far.

Next month, Bell will finally be unveiling his new hour in the form of a Netflix special called Private School Negro. It should come as no surprise that he’ll be dissecting race, politics, Trump (arguably separate from normal politics), but we’d submit (knowing full well that you might have fatigue of Trump humor) that Bell is one of the best and smoothest when it comes to writing and performing political comedy.

Look for Private School Negro to drop on Netflix on Tues. June 26th.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Will Be 2018 Recipient of Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

Already, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is one of our most beloved comedic actors just from her roles on Seinfeld and Veep alone and is well deserving of a bust of Mark Twain in this regard. One has to wonder if Seinfeld and Veep alums/cast members will show up and do related bits at the upcoming ceremony.

Also, as far as the Mark Twain Prize is concerned, 2018 will be noted for having Julia Louis-Dreyfus winning and it being the year that Bill Cosby had his Mark Twain Prize stripped from him.

If you remember from Reggie Watts last special Spatial, there was a portion of it that included an abstract parody of a sitcom.

If you haven’t seen Spatial, stop reading and go watch it as it is an hour of pure Reggie in the best way possible.

So, this Thursday, thanks to Butcher Bird Studios, Reggie, Rory Scovel, and Kate Berlant will get to an extended version of them going around in the form of a traditional sitcom.

We have no idea what’s going to happen (as it will be fully improvised), but we’re sure that it will be tomfoolery of the highest degree and shouldn’t be missed.

You can catch it at https://www.youtube.com/reggiewatts at 9PM (with a “pre-show” at 8PM)
