Bo Burnham’s Inside Is Getting Theatrical Run (That Just Got Extended by Three Days)
(via Deadline)
Without a doubt, one of the most talked about comedy specials of 2021 is Bo Burnham’s Inside. Cinematic and timely, it’s without a doubt one of the best comedy specials to be made during the pandemic and further proof that great artists can figure out how to make powerful, moving works of art despite the constraints of a worldwide pandemic.
Originally, Netflix was planning an exclusive one night only screening of Inside, but demand for seeing one of the most epic looking specials (despite it being almost entirely shot in one room) on the big screen has prompted the streaming giant to make it into a whole run for next weekend Jul. 22nd-25th at hundreds of theaters across North America.
It’s very rare for comedy specials to ever find their way into theaters and, as far as we can even remember, the last few specials to even make an attempt at a theatrical run over the last few years might all be just from Kevin Hart.
In any case, this is a great excuse to go watch Bo Burnham’s Inside yet again.
Bo Burnham Rises to the Challenge of Making a Pandemic Era Comedy Special with “Inside”
At the beginning of lockdown, the live in-person element of comedy that is so vital to the art form disappeared leaving no clue as to when or if it would ever come back. Immediately, the absurdist questioning of what live comedy could even be without it had to not only be entertained, but faced and dealt with by every comedic performer everywhere in the world.
Many comedians took to Zoom, IG Live, Twitch, drive-in theaters/pop-ups, etc. to try and salvage/reimagine what the form could be to several varying degrees of success. There was undoubtedly a feeling that live comedy had to figure out what it would do in 2035 right on the spot of March/April 2020. Despite the misanthropic and existential protestations of comedians declaring that “comedy is dead”, live comedy lived on through trailblazers, pioneers, and the super clever.
Bo Burnham encapsulates all three of those distinctions.
He reaffirmed that with his latest comedy special, Inside. Off the top, it’s a staggeringly magnificent work just from how it has an undeniably epic expanse both in aesthetic and content while all coming from Bo’s mind and his physical limitations as the sole person on the production to going through a Campbell-esque hero’s journey all within a single room.
The irony of Bo’s humble beginnings of doing a bunch of songs by himself in a room over several months and then returning to them, albeit with a cinematic scope and a global pandemic and reckoning at hand, isn’t lost on us. Perhaps, that’s an overarching, thematic bit in of itself? If anything, the evolution of Bo’s journey as a comedian, a content creator, a director, and, most importantly, as a person all coalesce here in what is such a thoroughly human meditation on what 2020/2021 has been like through Bo’s lens of super clever songs, transitions, and gorgeous lighting.
Bo’s collection of tunes and asides cover so many facets of what we all went through last year. He goes from a personal level in regards to his own anxiety and depression to the global anxieties of what COVID-19 hath wrought and the shaking of the world’s soul in regards to its systemic problems regarding race, precarity, and the unprecedented levels of isolation. There’s a rawness and vulnerability that comes with Inside too, both literally and figuratively, with moments of very personal confessions of his mental state and in a shaggy Bo dancing and posing in just his underwear.
Bo Burnham’s Inside is very much what a comedy special as a performance art exhibit in art museum could be at it’s very best and we deeply love it for that.
We know you’re sick of being inside, but please do watch this as Bo Burnham: Inside is streaming on Netflix right now right here.
Bo Burnham Is Coming Out With His Own DIY Special, Made During COVID-19
When it comes to conceptual comedy, especially when it comes to doing it in a comedy special, Bo Burnham is one of the most imaginative and skilled comedians around today in that regard. what. still stands, even now, as one of the more innovative works of comedy in the entire history of comedy.
So, with the obvious challenges that the COVID-19 has presented with people having to be distanced and masked and gathering, especially in the way that live comedy is traditionally presented, Burnham, we think, could probably dream something up that would work.
Thus, he is just wrapping up such a special called Inside that he made entirely by himself without a crew or audience (as opposed to most other comedy specials that have been made in this time including Sam Morrill, Nate Bargatze, Colin Quinn, Tiffany Haddish’s They Ready). There’s a bit of a teaser that reveals Bo solo at a piano in a real dramatic light, but nothing much else.
Burnham’s last special was in 2016, so this small tidbit is more than enough to look forward to seeing billboards around town leading up to, possibly, another trailer, to, eventually, the release of the special (which will be a date TBD). Also, it will be his the first special since Eighth Grade, directing Chris Rock’s Tamborine, and his great role in the Oscar nominated A Promising Young Woman, and that wondering where Bo’s creativity is now even makes Inside even more enticing.
hi. i made a new special. it was filmed by me, alone, without a crew or an audience, over the course of the past year. it is almost finished. i hope you like it. pic.twitter.com/5a59IUrzVj

Bo Burnham Will Write Songs for Jonathan Krisel’s Sesame Street Movie at Warner Bros.
Bo Burnham Will Write Songs for Jonathan Krisel’s Sesame Street Movie at Warner Bros.
Though Bo Burnham is on a trajectory of being an auteur from directing comedy specials and Eighth Grade, going away from his past of doing meticulously crafted songs, it would seem that the allure of the latest Sesame Street feature film adaption proved too strong.
It’s definitely an intriguing wrinkle to this Sesame Street movie, especially when you have Jonathan Krisel, whose work you know from Portlandia and Baskets, attached as director.
So, possibly, we could be getting a very cinematic, very meta Sesame Street movie coming soon to theaters?
Bo Burnham and A24 Are Having Free Screenings of Eighth Grade So Kids In and Around Eighth Grade Can Go See It
Bo Burnham, writer and director of the fantastic Eighth Grade, has lamented that the film’s R-rating has made it difficult for kids to see it and is thus having the film screened for free for one special engagement this Wednesday, August 8th in all 50 states so that everyone of all ages can go see it (especially the kids of the age that the movie is about).
Get more details on showtimes and locations here. Know that you ought to show up early to make sure you get tickets and get in.
Oh yeah, in case you weren’t aware, Eighth Grade is playing nationwide and is, without a doubt, one of the best movies of the year. Please go see it at a theater whenever you can.
Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade Is Hands Down One of the Best Coming of Age Movies of the Year
Bo Burnham continues to dazzle us all with his multitudes and multitudes of talent, skill, and precision even as he now takes his creativity behind the scenes these days.
His feature film debut Eighth Grade is further evidence of that claim and a fantastic and hysterical portrait of adolescence in 2018. The advent of social media, mass shootings, and a lost generation of parenting all raise the bar on what it’s like to be alienated as a kid right now. Burnham captures all of that in the most cinematic way possible even if the moments are rather small and nuanced in the grand scheme of life. Elsie Fisher has a star making performance with how true every stutter and hesitation rings when just trying to talk to someone as the film’s main girl, Kayla.
Also, if it helps, you can almost draw this analogy of Lady Bird is to the 90s and 2017 as Eighth Grade is to 2018 and everything that’s going on right now.
Eighth Grade is now playing in theaters in limited release in NY/LA.
Even if you actively try to not read the news, you most likely know about the horrific separation of immigrant children from their immigrant parents at the U.S. Mexico border happening under the Trump Administration.

Bo Burnham’s Latest “Gay Kid and Fat Chick” To Be Directed by Amy York Rubin
Bo Burnham’s Latest “Gay Kid and Fat Chick” To Be Directed by Amy York Rubin
Bo Burnham continues to blaze a trail from behind the scenes. This year alone, he has made plenty of great noise with directing Chris Rock’s latest special and his own feature length film Eighth Grade.
Continuing in that direction, Burnham’s next project, which he wrote and will produce, is called Gay Kid and Fat Chick, centering on teenagers taking on their bullies via their alter egos, will be helmed by veteran TV director Amy York Rubin.
It’s totally up to Bo and he certainly has gotten success exploring work behind-the-scenes in comedy over the last couple of years, but we can only wonder what he’d do if he were to another stand-up special/concert film/etc. If that is what the future holds for Bo, it’ll be unlike anything we’ve seen before, kind of like what.
Watch Trailer for Bo Burnham’s Writer-Director Debut “Eighth Grade”
Bo Burnham really is making an impressive showing as a director after making himself into a formidable comedian. From his work on his own specials to directing comedy specials for Jerrod Carmichael and Chris Rock, Burnham has made the next step to a feature length film Eighth Grade that he both wrote and directed.
The trailer promises a coming of age of story that has a bit of wry, satiric edge and something that could be really special (perhaps, 2018′s Lady Bird). The trailer will definitely make you think about how painful a time 8th grade might have been for you.
Look for Eighth Grade in theaters on July 13th.
