Pick of the Day: No More Mr. Mean Guy (in LA) 5/16

May 6, 2024
News
experimental comedy, los angeles comedy, lyric hyperion, nick vatterott, stand up comedy

Nick Vatterott is hands down one of the most innovative comedians around (just watch any of his late night sets or his special Disingenuous) who constantly bends rules/reality/joke structure into some of the most hysterical things we’ve ever seen.

Vatterott will be taking on a new challenge coming up by attempting to take a different approach than what seems to be the tenor of the times (Netflix did just put on a 3 hour roast of Tom Brady that’s a far cry from what roasts were in Dean Martin/Don Rickles’ day) with stand-up comedy: being nice.

Next Thursday, May 16th at 9:30PM at Lyric Hyperion, Nick will attempt what seems impossible these days by not being “Mr. Mean Guy” and being hysterical. If there’s someone to pull it off with his clever revelry in absurdity, it would be Nick and whoever else he has up his sleeve.

Tickets are only $10 for this experiment of Nick’s and you can (and very much should) go get them here.

The Beat Kitchen has been a home to one of Chicago’s most venerable indie comedy shows, Chicago Underground Comedy for well over a decade. Hailed as a haven for alternative comedy in the Paris of the Midwest, many of Chicago’s best that have found their way to national and international fame like Kumail Nanjiani and Hannibal Buress were an integral part of Chicago Underground Comedy being put on the map.

Many of their delightful alums have specifically found their way to LA over the years and, as such, want to do a Chicago Underground LA Reunion. That’ll actually be happening on Wed. Jun. 1st at The Fable in Eagle Rock at 8PM PT.

You’ll be treated to long time LA comedy denizens via Chicago including:
Robert Buscemi
Mike Bridenstine
Ricky Carmona
Sean Flannery
Renee Gauthier
Alison Leber
Jared Logan
Brooke Van Poppelen
Tony Sam
Nick Vatterott

Don’t miss out, especially because the show is the nice price of FREE.

Nick Vatterott’s Absurdist Comedy Special “Disingenuous” Proves You Don’t Have to Be Honest in Comedy

January 13, 2022
News
absurdist comedy, comedy dynamics, comedy special, disingenuous, nick vatterott, stand up comedy

The notion that the best comedy being sourced from pure honesty is quite a popular one and has been for the last several years. It’s a notion that comes with plenty of merit as a confessional or an incredibly personal type of observational comedy being the ticket for many of the most famous and popular comedians of right now (Jim Gaffigan, Ali Wong, Kevin Hart, Marc Maron, Iliza Shelsinger to a name a few).

However, that notion can be a bit misguided as absurdist comedy, especially the kind descended from Andy Kaufman, doesn’t have very much to do with telling much of an objective truth if any truth at all and can be some of the funniest things we’ve ever seen. The comedy dare lie in the sheer absurdity of the presentation and execution and one Nick Vatterott does so exquisitely with his new hour special that’s aptly named Disingenuous.

Vatterott is mastered at his commitment to bits and taking the tiniest irksome details and blowing them out of proportion to the nth degree. He is part of what seems like a handful of stand-up comedians that come from a more sublimely ridiculous side of things (Brent Weinbach, Sam Simmons, Anna Seregina/Kyle Mizono if you need some more). See it for yourself when Nick checks his set list on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

On Disingenuous, Vatterott bends and re-shapes the traditional form of a stand-up comedy special not only with cutting in between sets in different venues in different cities, but having a farcical B-story-esque narrative running throughout the hour. The silliness abounds with abandon here, but trust that Nick’s method to his madness is precisely measured and carefully sharpened. It’s just the start of 2022 (and this special came out at the very end of 2021), but it might be one of the most original hour specials of either year.

Disingenuous is now streaming on VOD or on audio platforms almost anywhere. Please get into it and enjoy here.

The “Get Rich Nick” Podcast Both Investigates Actual Ideas to Get Money Quick and Is Delightful Along the Way

Nick Vatterott and Nick Turner, both mastered in their on-stage silliness as comedians, take a serious turn, albeit a slight one, for their new podcast Get Rich Nick.

Each episode has both Nicks legitimately try out different methods of making money real quick, taking whatever consequences and mishaps come along their way (so you don’t have to!). Throughout, Nick and Nick maintain a level of goofiness to have Get Rich Nick be funny while discovering something like donating plasma isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Other episodes cover betting on racehorses and doing TaskRabbit and have been very enjoyable journeys thus far.

They’re just a few episodes in, but Get Rich Nick is definitely worth an early subscribe. Please do so here or wherever you listen to your podcasts.

Nick Vatterott Exquisitely Sends Up FM Rock Radio with “KROCK 90Q.BUZZ”

Absurdist extradordinaire Nick Vatterott dazzles with his latest work, a studio sketch album that sends up the sheer ridiculousness that comes with DJ’ing a rock radio station.

Though many of us only listen to music through Spotify, YouTube and have replaced the chit chat of radio station DJs with soothing voices of your favorite podcasts hosts, terrestrial FM radio, and specifically rock radio, still very much exists. They also have all the annoying trappings that have had for over twenty years.

Vatterott, along with the spot on production of Jesse Case (not the comedian Jesse Case) takes the promos, stings, songs, and even inner studio drama (that you might hear on a very real KROQ here in LA) and tweaks it oh-so-slightly and beautifully for maximum comedic effect. In many ways, it’s almost like a hilarious acid trip while turning your old school radio dial.

KROCK 90Q.BUZZ is available now and you really ought to get right here right now, right here right now.

Watch Nick Turner Die a Bunch of Times After Waking Up from a Coma in “Ya Killin’ Me”

Waking up from a coma can be so jarring, especially if you’ve been under for an extended period of time.

Nick Turner takes this idea repeatedly to the nth degree by imagining the worst outcome of waking up from an aforementioned coma in the Comedy Central digital series, Ya Killin’ Me. Thankfully, it’s done a darkly humorous way for all our enjoyment this Halloween season (or anytime really if you happen to love dark comedy like we do).

So, without further adieu, please watch and enjoy Ya Killin’ Me.

Of all the types of places that we’ve seen comedy in LA, seeing it in a streetwear store is something we haven’t seen yet.

Next Monday, June 26th, that’ll change as Classic Era will be having Classic Comedy. There will be a killer line-up in addition to plenty of streetwear, tacos, sangria, and more.

Best of all, it’s free to attend. Get more details here.

That’s right. This show is stand-up comedy completely in complete darkness. If you’ve never experienced such a thing before, it’s pretty trippy, and, for this show, you’ll be in the hands of a great line-up.

Also, we should point out that this show, done in pitch black darkness, has a comedian named Steven King on it (sure, it’s spelled differently than the author, but it’s still a cool, novelty selling point anyway).

You can (and should) get your tickets here.

Ian Abramson’s “7 Minutes in Purgatory”, That Has Comedians Perform Separated from Audience, Is Now a Comedy Central Web Series

The Comedy Central web series version of Ian Abramson’s brilliant show 7 Minutes in Purgatory, where comics do a set while separated from a live audience and can’t hear their laughter while that audience can watch remotely, is finally here.

With Comedy Central footing the bill, Ian got a truck outside of the venue to sequester the performers away from the audience so there is absolutely no way that the comedians can hear the audience (on top of noise cancelling ear protection).

Watch what happens when you stick Nick Vatterott…

…host Ian Abramson…

…Dave Hill…

…musician and fun extraordinaire Dan Deacon…

…and sketch group Wham City get stuck in the back of a truck and try to do comedy.

Comedy Central has been killing it on their channel as well as in the digital arena with CC:Studios, but they’ve got two albums line-up for release of their Comedy Central Records label that should make sure they’re doing quite well on that front well.

Come Nov. 4th, Cristela’s Cristela Alonzo will release “Some of the Hits” and the great Nick Vatterott will release “For Amusement Only”. Be sure to grab these up next Tues as we suspect that you won’t regret one bit.

1) Despite showing up late, Beer in the Shower @ White Horse Inn Cocktail Lounge, catching Nick Vatterott and Jerry Rocha w/host Paul Danke was THE WAY to close out a Wednesday night especially if someone said about everything you’ve written a few hours earlier, “I don’t understand any of your fuckin’ shit, man.  What the hell is going on your head? I can tell you don’t sleep.  You should sleep and stop writing.”  If only I skipped my screenwriter’s group, I would have caught the hilarity of Shawn Pearlman, Eddie Pepitone, and Fortune Feimster.  Catch Beer in the Shower every Wednesday, 10PM @ White Horse.

2) Just because its miles outside of LA proper, doesn’t mean that there’s nothing funny about Long Beach.  Comedians Chris Adams and Jerry Brandt prove that in spades and THEN SOME with their weekly podcast Drinking Buddies.  This week, longtime LA comedy vet Don Barris and the hilarious Tim Babb talk everything from comedy to Disneyland to rape and, of course, drinking.  See how everything connects here.

3) “Jesse Miller.  Straight up.” –Andre Hyland.  Every few weeks at the AMAZING Anna Lee Lawson Comedy Hour @ The Next Stage Theatre, Andre Hyland transforms into Jesse Miller and takes over with the Jesse Miller Talk Show (next one’s in November).  Check out Jesse on a Trikke.  Again, it’s straight up.

4) From the World Famous Comedy Garage, quintessential hipster LA comedian Paul Danke gives you some advice on Halloween costumes so you don’t look totally lame, unless you’re being ironic, well, then, you know what I mean….  Check it on Funny or Die here.

5) There will be a brand new open mic in town at Señor Fish in Little Tokyo starting Nov. 9th. Happy hour w/$3 beers & $2 fish tacos and more details coming soon.

1) Last night, Sweet and Sour Comedy @ Genghis Cohen proved why you shouldn’t miss ANY of the three remaining shows produced/hosted/rocked by Abbey Londer, her theatre degree, and her “poor decision making skills” most recently on display on a trip to NYC.  Seeing Jackie Kashian, Andy Peters, Dave Ross, and Nick Vatterott performing together at a Chinese restaurant was exactly what I needed after getting a parking ticket at 1AM the early morning previous.  Next show on Nov. 9th/7:30PM/$5/free for comics/with Adam Hunter/3rd to last ‘Sweet & Sour Comedy’ ever.  Basically, don’t miss it unless you really hate being happy.

2) The nebulous, disparate nature of Los Angeles makes performing/writing about LA Comedy extremely hard (that’s NOT what she said/followed by the sound of someone playing Russian Roulette).  Fellow Long Beach comedian Shayne Michael takes on the task by giving a plethora of comedic insights and resources that are absolutely invaluable.  Please check out shayne-michael.com.

3) If your dream was to do a “comedy crawl” of seeing great shows on Wednesday October 27th, 2010, you can.  Though, it won’t be so much of a crawl with all the driving you’ll have to do.  You can start off w/ “Barry Rothbart’s Evening of Evening Comedy”, 6:30PM @ UCB Theatre, then go to “The Meltdown”, 8:30PM @ Meltdown Comics, then go to “The Ed Ghoulvez Haunted Punk House”, 9PM @ The Westside Comedy Theater, then go to “Beer in the Shower”, 10PM @ White Horse Inn Cocktail Lounge, and finish it off with “The Anna Lee Lawson Comedy Hour”, 11PM @ The Next Stage Theatre.  You’re welcome.

4) Comedy and Pornography.  That never happens, right?  Thanks to Eli Olsberg & Jake Weisman of the Morning After Podcast and special guest co-host Dave Ross for combining Comedy and LA Exxxotica 2010.

5) As of late, many comedians have been getting horribly inconsequential citations from LA Parking Enforcement or the LAPD.  Petition for Late Night Performers Parking Permit anyone?
