1. Oh, thank goodness there’s a new hour of Kyle Kinane to offer the pitch perfect solace to the high octane insanity that has been 2024. His latest hour special, Dirt Nap, is Kyle doing what Kyle does best with lengthy punchline filled stories and intricately colored observations all in service of a big comedic payoff (that, in a way, feels like a bonus since the journey in of itself is so goddamn fun). Kyle does over 8 minutes on describing Fast X here and, for our money, is more fun than the movie itself. That’s just one fraction of how much of a joy Dirt Nap is, even with being perfectly aware uncertain times we live in. Please watch and enjoy Dirt Nap on repeat here.

2. It’s kind of absurd that Jackie Kashian doesn’t have a sitcom focused around her and her dyed-in-the-woo-salesman of a dad. Kashian is and has been one of the funniest comedians working today and her bits about her dad are pretty much priceless. See for yourself here in Jackie’s Don’t Tell set.

3. Mindy Kaling’s next sitcom, Murray Hill, seems like Kaling is aiming to make her version of Friends with a logline of “…five work-obsessed twenty-somethings who strive for professional success and, if they have time, personal happiness in Manhattan’s most glamorous neighborhood, Murray Hill” (Deadline).

4. Amazon Prime has a Legally Blonde spin-off in the works (Deadline). The legacy of Elle Woods endures, but we hope that there isn’t any Kim Kardashian lawyer storyline in this project.

5. Though it would seem that Michelle Buteau/Ilana Glazer vehicle helmed by Pamela Adlon Babes isn’t about abortion, it feels like the same sort of buzz that Obvious Child got is coming up for the buddy/birth comedy. See for yourself with the first official trailer here, then look for it in theaters right after Mother’s Day on May 17th.

Who Else Could Have Been Nominated (and Maybe Win) for Best Comedy Album at The Grammys Besides an Undeserving Louis C.K.?

As much as we’d love to dissect C.K.’s lack of a proper mea culpa for being an admitted, repeated sex pest, how that has soured his comedy since his return, and how he’s wholly undeserving of his third Best Comedy Album Grammy win (he’s artistically regressed with his last couple of hours), we’re pretty sure that such words would only be affirmed by those already demoralized by his latest success or tossed to the metaphorical curb by his diehard acolytes. We could even spend hundreds of words on how The Recording Academy, the governing body responsible for The Grammy Awards, has long since been out of touch with what would supposedly be the “Best Comedy Album” having largely succumbed to Netflix and HBO and the like putting out audio versions of highly produced and promoted specials that end up edging out other purely audio comedy albums from ever even getting nominated.

Hmph. We digress.

Rather than delve into that endless rabbit hole or go into the systemic issues at The Recording Academy that reduce this particular Grammy category, amongst others, to mostly a popularity contest (the voters for this category, like any major awards, have no real incentive to listen to every single album and often just go with what they know ahead of time), we’ll instead show you the folks that met all the qualifications to even be in the running to be nominated (ostensibly, who was left out of the equation against C.K.’s lackluster Sincerely Louis C.K.)

You already know that the other nominees for Best Comedy Album were Kevin Hart: Zero F***s Given, Nate Bargatze: The Greatest Average American, Lewis Black: Thanks For Risking Your Life, Chelsea Handler: Evolution, and Lavell Crawford: The Comedy Vaccine. One could make the argument, if you’re already OK with CK returning to stand-up, that he is most definitely in the running against the five other nominees (especially Kevin Hart’s very tone-deaf special done in his basement that’s bigger than most apartments anywhere).

However, there are plenty of folks that, because of lack of fame, prestige, etc., were already doomed to not get any recognition from the Recording Academy despite their comedic prowess (and explicit lack of sex crimes). Amongst those that could have been nominated for Best Comedy Album this year were Beth Stelling, Rory Scovel, Michelle Buteau, Chad Daniels, Sean Devlin, Ester Steinberg, Ziwe, Tim Minchin, Atsuko Okatsuka, Ben Roy, Robin Tran, Tim Heidecker, Ian Edwards, Lisa Curry, Chris Gethard, Dan Soder, Sam Tallent, Dave Helem, and Lil’ Rel. Those names represent some of the very funniest people in comedy right at this moment, but only a fraction of who could have been nominated for a Best Comedy Album Grammy this year (and possibly beat out Louis CK).

Thanks to an industry source, we’ve got a list of pretty much everyone else that was in the running for a Grammy nomination this year, but ultimately was left out for the aforementioned reasons above and many others. Even though you might think major awards ceremony are largely overly self-important and indulgent, we hope that you can get some perspective on who is left out (and much more likely has the actual Best Comedy Album of this past year).

The New York Comedy Festival Announces Its 2021 Headliners

Michelle Wolf, Nick Kroll, Colin Quinn, Marc Maron, Megan Stalter, Michelle Buteau, Norm MacDonald, Gary Gulman, Ronny Chieng, Brian Regan, Alok, Smart Funny & Black Live!, Bill Maher, Andrew Santino, Vir Das, and Tim Dillon are all set to be the top billing of this year’s New York Comedy Festival, which is, indeed happening in person from Nov. 8th-14th.

Though the Delta variant continues to surge COVID-19 throughout America, it would seem that the comedy festival slated for the fall are still in pushing forward, setting the stage for, perhaps, the normal annual schedule of SF Sketchfest, SXSW, Edinburgh Fringe, etc. all coming back to their festivities in person. While that is already quite the mix of headlining acts, that is only the tip of the iceberg as there is a cornucopia of other shows and performers that will take part in NYC’s annual big time comedy shin dig.

Pick of the Day: Padma Puts On a Virtual Comedy Show 12/17

We told you that there would be plenty of big time comedy benefit shows for the Georgia Runoffs and, lordy lordy, there sure are. This latest one is being put up by the one and only Padma Lakshmi that’s very explicit in this regard by being called, “Padma Puts on a Virtual Comedy Show for the Georgia Runoff Elections: An Evening to Benefit FairFight”.

Stacey Abrams’ FairFight was instrumental in registering voters and contributing to Biden’s 2020 Election win and will undoubtedly be crucial in the upcoming special Georgia Senate Runoffs.

So, they tapped Padma for a live benefit show and she, in turn, got one hell of a line-up that includes:

The pure things in this world right now seem to be such rare finds (and, even at that point, who knows how really pure it is with some quick Internet research). Undoubtedly, some would point to that skater lip synching Fleetwood Mac as one of those rare pure things.

We would like to point you to Michelle Buteau and her very first (long overdue) hour stand-up special, Buteaupia.

Buteau has been and is a pure manifestation of celebration and this special shows this off beautifully. She truly exudes the idea of living her best life whether she shrewdly and slickly talks about the cultural differences between her and Dutch husband or working with one of her idols, J. Lo. Michelle’s energy is infectious. It’s very hard to not be charmed by her presence (and that glimmering ensemble she dons for this special).

In addition to such a radiance and cleverness in all of her personal observations, Michelle does something that so few comedians do by really sending a message of personal empowerment in a very genuine, non-self-help-book, way to the audience and anyone else watching Buteaupia later. Whether she’s talking to the crowd or weaving that sentiment into bit, Michelle ties off her special in a manner that leaves you smiling in such a pure way.

Ian Abramson’s 7 Minutes in Purgatory Gave a Preview of What Comedy Would Be Like During COVID-19 Pandemic

When it comes to comedians performing without a traditional audience like is the temporary norm for now, you might have heard references to comedy specials recorded years ago from Drew Michael or Harland Williams (Michael recorded it on a sound stage for HBO and Williams stood on a rock in the desert and did his hour).

We’d actually like to point you to something that is an even more apt comparison and a pretty spot on precursor to what how live comedy is performed and consumed right now. The ever innovative Ian Abramson put himself on the map a bit with ultra-innovative (at the time) live comedy show called 7 Minutes in Purgatory where comedians had to perform remotely, though near an actual venue without any chance to hear the laughs of the live audience that was in attendance for the show.

For the crowd, they were treated to watching a live feed of the comedian in the remote performance space and got to watch them try and perform. If you’ve seen a stand-up comedy show on Twitch, Instagram Live, Zoom, etc., you ought to know that 7 Minutes in Purgatory gave us a preview (even though it was unaware of doing so) of what was to come.

It was and is a great show and a daring comedic experiment that had comics recalibrate their act, try a daring bit that leans into the format, or automatically go into uber self-deprecation (exactly like they do now).

As an artifact of the before times, it’s even more fascinating to see what doing comedy in the way we have to do right now was like when we didn’t have to do that.

This second season of Ian Abramson’s stand-up-comedy-equivalent-of-a-Skinner-Box, 7 Minutes in Purgatory, really showcases the stark contrast of what performing comedy without an audience while another audience enjoys it in a separate, remote location.

Just see how Maria Bamford beautifully handles performing in front of a 1000 empty seats while there’s a smaller, but mightier number of warm bodies three stories above her thoroughly delighting in her performance.

You can also see how host Ian Abramson, Jon Dore, Michelle Buteau, Colton Dunn, Caitlin Gill and Bobcat Goldthwait all handled the existential quandary of 7 Minutes in Purgatory in all different sorts of ways as well some inside commentary from their fellow performers/purgatory dwellers.

This is actually going to be a pretty great Labor Day Weekend for Michelle Buteau as her half hour special premieres on Comedy Central on Saturday night at midnight, which will follow the release of her album Shut Up! that’s out today.

On Shut Up!, Buteau showcases a nice sheen of attitude in order to connect with the audience on a more vulnerable level, which she does deftly, when delving into personal material about topics like being in an interracial, cross-contintental marriage. So much painful/endearing humor can be drawn from the horrible/amazing things that happen in life and Stripped Stories showed, beyond a shadow of doubt, how great that can be. Though the name of the show might lead you to believe it’s just a bunch of vulgar sex stories, I believe that “stripped” is in reference into how every performer on the show strips their normal stage persona and become vulnerable and hilarious in a way that I never expected. In from NYC, Giulia Rozzi and Margot Leitman stopped here in LA with their amazing show at the UCB Theatre and hosted/shared some sensational and hysterical stories with Michelle Buteau, Tony Sam, and a few musical confessions from Wendy Ho.
